Seems Lee has an answer for everything. All was great in 18th century England. But wait, it wasn’t. Oh, in that case compare today with 1950, or some other time if that’s not accurate.
Lee wants to imply that some other era was better than today, when the truth is that on the vast majority of measures the here and now is the wealthiest, healthiest and most peaceful in history – it’s just not religious enough for some.

Never said it was “great”, merely that the poltical, spiritual and social foundations were better than today.

Fuck, your definition of “peace” is clearly different to most sane peoples.

Stop worrying about what other people are up to. If gays offend you, don’t hang out with them. If your marriage cant survive a couple of gays getting married, it wasn’t up to much in any case. If teenagers who aren’t your kids having sex offends you, don’t think about it. If people drinking or taking recreational drugs makes you mad, stay away from them. If you hate the idea of sex education, don’t send your kids to the class.

You’re like a bitter old man in an apartment next to a hot young couple having a great time and you hate them for it.

The workhouse was an invention of the industrial revolution and modern liberals. Prior to that there was no need for them, as that kind of extreme urban poverty was not a problem.

An interesting claim. I guess it could be partly correct because a lot more people lived in rural poverty, but there were very hard times for many.

I suspect “the goood old days” simply means days when the churches had far more domination over the population. Poor people in Europe could rarely escape their low place in society. Now in places like this country virtually anyone can lift themselves if they choose. Big difference. Even modern “poverty” is nothing like it was, for one thing health care is readily available to everyone.

BTW, Lee we’ve only been at war since 2001 as a bit player in the Global War on Terror. Prior to that, Vietnam, so it’s been pretty quiet for us. If we think domestically, it’s been even quieter, no fatalities since 1943, if you count mines or crazy Jap POWs.

A young Kiwi lad moved to London and went to Harrods looking for a job.

The manager groaned and continued “Just one? Here in Harrods, our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale for?”
“£108,637.64”, the Kiwi replied.
The manager choked and exclaimed “£108,637.64? What the hell did you sell him?”
“Well, first I sold him a small fish hook, then a medium fish hook, and then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down at the coast so I told him he would need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him that twin-engined Power Cat. Then he said he didn’t think his Honda Civic would pull it, so took him down to Harrods car sales and I sold him a Cayenne “The manager, incredulous, said “You mean to tell me….a guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and 4wheeldrive?”
“No, no, no…he came in here to buy a box of tampons for his wife and I said…”Well, since your weekend’s rooted, you might as well go fishing.”

Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions, stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them. On the appointed day, the inspector turned up.

“That’s disgraceful” said the inspector, “I need to interview the half-wit.”

A Pastor goes to the dentist for a set of false teeth. The first Sunday
after he gets his new teeth, he talks for only eight minutes. The second
Sunday, he talks for only ten minutes. The following Sunday, he talks
for 2 hours and 48 minutes.

The congregation had to mob him to get him down from the pulpit and they
asked him what happened.

The Pastor explains the first Sunday his gums hurt so bad he couldn’t
talk for more than 8 minutes. The second Sunday his gums hurt too much
to talk for more than 10 minutes. But, the third Sunday, he put his
wife’s teeth in by mistake and he couldn’t shut up…

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: ‘Talking Dog For Sale ‘ He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

‘You talk?’ he asks.

‘Yep,’ the Lab replies..

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says ‘So, what’s your story?’

The Lab looks up and says, ‘Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.’

‘I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running… But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.’ ‘I got married, had a litter of puppies, and now I’m just retired.’

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

‘Ten dollars,’ the guy says.

‘Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?’

‘Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that shit.

WOMAN’S DIARY

2nd August 2008 Saturday

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely.

I’d been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and was a bit late meeting him, thought it might be that.

The bar was really crowded and loud, so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk.

He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we went somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn’t seem himself – he hardly laughed and didn’t seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying,
I just knew that something was wrong.

He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in,
He hesitated but followed.

I asked him what was wrong, but he just half shook his head and turned the television on.

After about ten minutes of silence I said that I was going upstairs to bed, I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply,
He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile.

He didn’t follow me up immediately but came up later and, to my surprise, we
made love – but he still seemed distant and a bit cold.

I cried myself to sleep – I think he’s planning to leave me – maybe he’s found someone else.

There is some confusion as to what is happening with interest rates.
Some economists (and these are the ones that seem to be getting the
press coverage) are saying that interest rates will rise in the short
term. Earlier this year they predicted that interest rates would rise
back in March (with others suggesting June). They have been proved
wrong. New Zealand is still in a recession. The wider world,
particularly some of our major trading partners such as the USA, UK, and
Europe, are definitely in recession. Growth has even been slowing in
the lucky country, Australia. Unemployment in New Zealand is still at an
unacceptable level. Our currency is still high (although it has
depreciated a little in the past fortnight) making exporting difficult.
Interest rates in this country cannot rise until some of the above
variables change. We do not see this happening inside of twelve months.
It may be longer, if a new Government elected in November, starts
cutting back Government expenditure.

On the same topic, the broke EU. Some of the perks its bureaucrats enjoy:

HOURS: Staff are only expected to work 37.5 hours a week, and if they work longer they are entitled to time off in lieu.
HOLIDAYS: 42 days a year (including 24 days of annual leave, 7 days of public holidays and 11 ‘non-working’ days when EU institutions are closed).
FLEXITIME: 24 days off a year if they work for extra 45 minutes every day, adding up to of 66 days off when added to holidays.
SALARIES: 40% of European Commission staff earn more than £70,000 – compared with just 1% of British civil servants.
EXPATRIATION ALLOWANCE: An extra 16% on top of your salary if you are a non-Belgian in Brussels.
PENSIONS: Gold–plated pensions, with officials getting 19% of their final salary after ten years’ service.
LUNCH: Free meals and drinks in work canteens.
SCHOOLS: Can send children to one of 14 private EU schools, with taxpayers footing the bill for fees of up to £14,000 a year.
