You also will laugh at the Oregon Petition – http://www.petitionproject.org/ – signed by concerned scientists disputing global warming, including Perry S. Mason, Michael J. Fox, , Robert C. Byrd, John C. Grisham and Dr. Geri Halliwell.

What was interesting that over 9000 people with PhDs have signed it. Do you know if any of them are fakes?

Just a point
This is lax and is poor judgement by this organisation.
But please the mindless ridicule of all science and scientists is not being able to tell shit from clay. We mock the Greens as being Luddites but I see the same trend among some here.

The logical conclusion of expanding this trend is to withdraw science funding. Then technology, medicine and other life changing advancement dries up.

A balanced approach wise.

Ryan, for someone who makes quite a thing for being funny, you are remarkably humourless about others.

Yes, sure, an easy target, but they deserve every ounce of ridicule sent their way. The UCC are a purely political grouping trying to use “science” to gain some form of authority to instruct us on how to kowtow to their claimed “wisdom”. As an organisation they need a disclaimer along the lines of “contains a high proportion of nuts and flakes”

But the fucking funniest thing in history was in the good old Psych dept Uni of Auckland days ( I was a engineer BTW)

One of the professors was training a spider monkey as a home help.
The purchasing officer HATED this monkey and demanded it never be allowed near him.
One day said professor came into the purchasing officers office with the monkey on his shoulder. Before a word could be spoken the monkey piddled in the purchasing officers coffee and ran off.

Kiwigreg – good find, I eagerly await jonnobanks explaining his joke (which we all know means its a fail)

In other news about august scientific organisations, the National Science Foundation has had to correct their website which for over 6 years has said that “melting sea ice raises worldwide sea levels”

They’ve now removed that and replaced it with:

“[Editor’s note: An inaccurate statement about sea ice and rising sea levels has been deleted. We regret the error.]”

Uh-huh, my 7 year old understands that a melting ice cube won’t raise the water level in a glass, but the National Science Foundation took over 6 years to correct their mistake. Fail.

The Union of Concerned Scientists is a nonprofit science advocacy group based in the United States. The UCS membership includes *many private citizens* in addition to professional scientists.

True, but as the hat tip was paid him by Farrar, I saw Slater as the conveyancer of mischief. My attitude towards Slater is a reflection his attitude towards the rest of the world. I don’t like vandals, especially smart ones, unless they use satire as an excuse.

I’m not sure what the point of this stunt is. It reminds me of the Ben Goldacre stunt where he registered his dead cat as a member of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants.

Except there was point to that stunt. The famous and highly influential “Professor” Gillian McKeith cited her membership of this association as a reason why people should follow her nutritional advice which she doled out in books and TV. In reality she was a quack with crazy ideas.

I would be surprised if anyone cites their membership of the Union of Concerned Scientists as a qualification for anything. Hence the stunt is pointless.
