Reid,

Having read in Ian Wishart’s Daylight Robbery (rereleased for the election; have ordered my copy) that the two US presidents who tried to change the US currency (the details of which escape me for now) were both assassinated, it seems that there are very powerful people who want to keep things are they are. I’m very interested in Ian’s book for the explanation as to how it all pertains to NZ, being a complete economic illiterate and all.

That’s exactly right. But there is one absolutely essential difference between them: Labour is owned and operated by militant state-sector unions as their vehicle for plundering the average worker. And National isn’t.

Teapot affair too trivial for raids on media

The question from a BBC journalist to a Wellington-based reporter this week spoke volumes.
Was it true that one week before a general election, the police in New Zealand were about to search and seize material from the newsroom of the state radio service, at the behest of the Prime Minister?
When “yes” was the obvious reply, it was received with evident incredulity in London.

That the police have been called into the so-called “teapot tape” issue by the Prime Minister carries its own comment.
That they are now advising up to four news organisations that they seek information – and it is important to note here that it is not the actual tape recording or transcripts at this stage – should be resisted not only by the media but by all citizens who value a free media and its duty to the public.

Police inquiries, led by a detective inspector and a team that police will not quantify, are purportedly at a formative stage.

The unfortunate officers who have been handed this poisoned political teacup seem to want to gather any video that broadcasters have of the notorious “cuppa tea” meeting between John Key and Act’s John Banks a week ago to see what they can see.

Furthermore, they seek from Radio New Zealand any extended recording of an interview which it broadcast with the cameraman who left the microphone on a cafe table while the men talked.

There is no question that, as framed so far, the police inquiry is a fishing expedition to establish if there is anything that might help them understand just what the Prime Minister alleges was breaking the law. Such fishing expeditions are regularly decried by the courts and defenders of the public’s rights.

The Court of Appeal, in a notable case involving Television New Zealand in 1995, set out principles for the granting and execution of search warrants to be used on the news media. The first was that “a search warrant should not be used in trivial cases”. Given that the recording in this case arose during a media photo opportunity in a public cafe, and that it has neither been played nor published, this case surely remains in the realm of trivial allegations.

The Appeal Court also said “the material sought by police should have a direct and important place in the determination of the issues before the court”. As police now want video and sound from organisations which have never had the actual disputed recording, this principle cannot be validly met.

Many in the public have chosen to give Mr Key the benefit of the doubt, taking a view negative towards the media and endorsing a popular politician’s criticism of the recording.
Yet the prospect of newsrooms being searched for standard news coverage is surely not tolerable for an affair which the same public views as minor, and which centres on a discussion Mr Key terms “bland”.

The cameraman, Bradley Ambrose, has now sought High Court intervention to make a statutory declaration that the cafe venue and conversation were not, and could not have been, private. Should he succeed in a hearing likely to be next week, the police inquiry will be redundant as no law could have been broken.

Police should hang up the fishing rod and spare themselves the reputational damage Mr Key has invited this week.

Nookin, definitely. Just by looking at parts he quotes it seems certain these docs are about the electricity and gas distribution system and appliances that use it, not “gas” wafting out of a coal seam, or anywhere else. Is it Gerry’s problem if I fart in a lift?

John Key and John Banks will be wishing they had taken C.S. Lewis’ advice that “tea should be taken in solitude”, as “cuppagate” heads to court.

But the Crimes Act is clear that a communication will not be private if it occurs in “circumstances in which any party ought reasonably to expect that the communication may be intercepted …”.

In the lead-up to the election, what journalist would not want to know what was said? The conversation also took place in a public cafe, was filmed and the communication was arguably intercepted at this point, even without the audio. Cue the lip-readers.

Even if the conversation was a private communication, Mr Ambrose would only be criminally liable if he intercepted it intentionally.

Appealing to the tort of invasion of privacy is going to be difficult for Mr Key and Mr Banks given the public interest in disclosure.

For the reasons given above, it is questionable whether a reasonable expectation of privacy exists in this scenario or whether its publication would be considered highly offensive.

In this case, the political context in which the conversation was held is likely to be especially relevant.

Lucia this is true. Kennedy’s Executive Order 11110 got him killed. The fact he also said a few days previous he’d draw down forces in Vietnam and scatter the CIA to the four winds didn’t help either.

As Ron Paul says, the elite bankers benefit from this system and these people cross national boundaries and the same people who own the banking system in the states also owns the systems in Europe including in the UK. Unfortunately this not a conspiracy theory it’s a simple fact. Why for example is the bank of Rothschild still allowed today to set the daily gold price on the London bullion exchange? How come that’s not done by an independent panel of economic experts? For example. The reason why the media never mention it is because these people own the media. For example the Rothchilds have owned Reuters for over 150 years and they also own AP. There are others other than just the Rothchilds of course but people who think it’s only a “theory” usually don’t even know these simple facts let alone some of the more complicated ones.

And it looks like Obama has given the go signal to Israel for a strike on Iran.

And the Eurozone gets worse and won’t change till Germany drops her obduracy of which there is no sign and every day she leaves it the more difficult it becomes to make the plan. The more reluctant the ECB appears when it finally makes its stand, the less investors regain confidence in the Euro for the ECB then appears phoney, and the whole point of the excercise is to restore confidence, not destroy it.

Meanwhile the Chinese property market is showing signs of severe stress and Chinese provinces have internal debt loadings totaling trillions.

Something tells me this may not end very well.

Not content with segregated streets, queues and buses, extremist members of the Haredi have turned their attention to the city of Bet Shemesh, 30 kilometres to the west of Jerusalem.

Here, Jewish girls as young as six, wearing a conservative uniform of skirts below the knee and shirts to the elbow, are being targeted by the Haredi, called ”pritzas” (prostitutes) for being ”immodestly dressed” as they walk into Orot girls school, a state-funded religious-nationalist school. The Haredi are demanding the girls cover up.

Now this assumes the US battle-fleet is not taken out but as I’ve said for years and many times, Iran has Russian Sunburn missiles which are capable of taking out an aircraft carrier and cannot be stopped due to high speed terminal maneuvering capability which defeats CIWS defence. These can be launched at a carrier by a brief bloom from a fighter stooging around in the Zagros mountains.

Imagine a carrier being taken out and what that would do to the 3-4 month worse-case estimate in that article.

The chances have risen that Einstein was wrong about a fundamental law of the universe.

Scientists at the world’s biggest physics lab said on Friday they have ruled out one possible error that could have distorted their startling measurements that appeared to show particles travelling faster than light.
Many physicists reacted with scepticism in September when measurements by French and Italian researchers seemed to show subatomic neutrino particles breaking what Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein considered the ultimate speed barrier.
The European Organisation for Nuclear Research said more precise testing has now confirmed the accuracy of at least one part of the experiment.

nasska it’s a moving target on multiple fronts.

I don’t think it will be a single event. I think it will become a slow-mo train wreck. I don’t think it will start with the immediate European situation – they will find a viable way to stabilise confidence – it’s the model for world govt, they might let the Euro fail but they won’t let the EU fall apart. One mooted suggestion is they will amalgamate all national balance sheets. National control over budgets and taxation disappears to Brussells. One imagines things have to become somewhat worse before nations hand over their sovereignty like that but that’s one suggestion about Europe.

The great game in this GFC will play out between the US and China-Russia. Depending how these nations come out of this depends on who controls this next half-century. One plan I’ve heard is for the US to ditch the USD and issue a new, gold backed currency, if the Sino-Russian campaign to ditch it as the reserve gains enough global support.

So it’s hard to say, time-wise. My greatest fear for us is if China’s internal debt loadings and marked reduction in foreign currency earnings interfere with our mutual trade. She is our EU-US combined as those two were to us between the 40’s-80’s. She is that to us in the future and I think she will always have enough people rich enough to take everything we can send her no matter what happens globally. It’s just we have to become a household name to all her billion plus people, like Vegemite and just as beloved and institutionalised.

Can we do that? Let’s hope so.

Thanks…I’ll try to weigh this up against what unfolds. Obviously you are not looking for a sudden collapse such as heralded the Great Depression.

I agree that as a nation we can be cautiously hopeful that our heavy reliance on primary produce as our source of export income may be our saving grace.

Think your analysis is good. Also think though that India and Indonesia and the Philipines will play a big part in our survival.
Philipino’s are the biggest group emigrating to NZ and Indians are not far behind. They are business orientated, and in the case of Philipino’s many are well educated and speak english. Many are Christian and they are moving because of the Muslin influence in that area.

China is still very authoritarian and as education and wealth increases that will lead to many more tensions so the future there is full of tensions as well and at some point in time it too will be like the Soviets before and now the Indians and have to recognise its ethnics and their territories. The built up tensions in their finances may well be the catalist that begins that change. So many have been over ridden and disposessed.

The Berlin Wall was never going to survive when technology got into gear and the same applies to other countries.
Its is a wonderment that the Jews and Muslims are becoming more and mopre fundamentalist. Now there is a problem.

This is my greatest concern over our upcoming geopolitical reality V2. I’m not really sure how we can or should respond to that. It’s appalling the way they treat for example the Falung Gong. Responding properly to that is beyond my knowledge and wisdom, I just hope the people in MFAT have a better idea than I do.

Also agree the other countries in the BRIC are potent upcoming forces.

Water loon, I’ve been googling articles about the history of derivatives by credible sources, and I haven’t managed to find a single one that thinks John Key worth mentioning. Can you point me to any article ( not written post-crisis by a left wing loon with the intention of slandering Key) that gives him credit for creating the derivatives industry?
