US think tank funds NZ sceptics

The Heartland Institute, the US organisation that plays a key role in organised climate denial, has directly funded New Zealand’s most prominent sceptics, a search of US Internal Revenue Service documents has revealed.

In 2007, Heartland granted US$25,000 (NZ$32,000) to the NZ Climate “Science” Coalition, sending the money to NZ CSC member Owen McShane.

They also gifted the International Climate Science Coalition US$45,000 (NZ$59,000), forwarding the cash to NZ CSC webmaster and ICSC founding chairman Terry Dunleavy.

The documents do not reveal what the money was used for, but four NZ CSC members attended the December 2007 Bali conference as part of an ICSC delegation.

Bryan Leyland, energy advisor to both CSCs, confirmed in 2008 that “some expenses” for the trip had been covered by Heartland, but the NZ CSC has never revealed the full extent of the Heartland Institute funding of their operations, or its role in the expansion of their “climate science coalition” franchise.

I have just been watching the videos here of the latest police arrests and removals of the latest batch of Occupy Auckland and have finally come to this conclusion. The extreme left leaders such as Sue Bradford, John Minto and Penny Bright are actually exploiting mentally ill homeless people and drug addicts for their cause. It’s very sad that the extreme left movement is stooping so low.

But one of those mentioned in the funding has been a part of the campaign on KB. It’s a good bet there could be others not just posting personal opinions.

I’m disgusted you would even ask such a question. It should be obvious to you it is the government’s fault for not giving enough support to people who gamble andhave children. Those poor children were unfortunate enough to be born into a family that gambles, so it is up to the lazy fat cats in Wellington to pay for this. The parents shoudl be in no way be held responsible. In fact we all need to sit around and hold hands and sing Kumbaya while the government does somethign about this!!!!

Now this sounds to me like the PM is a bit pissed off with the thugs endeavoring to bully Kiwi’s around. Perhaps he has a better understanding of international money than the FBI and the Organized Gangster at the Organized Crime Squad.

Question is, Under the no surprises policy which Cabinet Ministers knew of this before hand and did they inform the PM.
Did the Attorney General Know for its his minions in Crown Law running the court deal. Did the Minister of Immigration know. Seemingly not by the scramble ensuing.
Did the Minister of Police Know. It would be conceivable that they would ignore the new Minister versus the Old one who would have had Police bosses with a please explain.

PM not pleased I’d say. Especially given he bent over backwards to accommodate the very people who are behind all this. Taxpayers should demand no more tax breaks for Yankee Doodle Dandy Film Companies.

Dotcom residency all above board – Key

A reminder to Kiwis who have had convictions wiped clean that they could one day find themselves in a position similar to internet multimillionaire Kim Dotcom if they want residency in another country.

The Prime Minister says immigration officials knew he had convictions – that was fully disclosed at the time but because of German law, he was granted residency here.

Labour and New Zealand First are calling for full disclosure about why he was given residency, but not permission to buy his Coatesville mansion – and they want to know if there was any ministerial involvement.

Mr Key says it’s all above board.

“Officials went and confirmed that with the German authorities. There are New Zealanders who also now, because of the clean slate provision we have, will be in the exact same position when they apply for residency in other countries overseas, and will in my view be granted residency,” he says.

@ AlphaKiwi: Some (ok, most) of those people are quite pathetic. Like the woman in the green top being led away quite calmly by the police, calling out to some one, “Don’t let these pigs get you” (so apparently it’s okay for her to call the police names, along with the other guy who calls one of them a “class traitor”) and claiming that “this is REALLY hurting – I’m a 53-year-old middle-aged woman”. Pffft, her arm was being held up only because the she was so short and the police officer was tall; might’ve been uncomfortable, but my wife is 55 and she would be utterly ashamed to be seen reacting in public like that. “Oh, my arm … ow-ow-ow-ow-ow”. Here’s a tip, lady – if you provoke people, and deliberately put yourself in a position where you know damn well that you’re likely to be arrested, then when it finally happens HARDEN UP AND TAKE IT.

Or the dirty long-haired dude. “They’ve used excessive violence and excessive force”. Well, looking at the videos I sure didn’t see it. C’mon, there were certainly enough people with camera phones, cameras, and videos recording everything that happened – show us this “violence”.

I feel so sorry for the police here. They’re supposed to just take this name-calling and abuse being hurled at them by these pathetic individuals.

From memory I recall that the Climate Science Coalition made no secret of receiving funds from the Heartland Institute and were open about attending Institute organized events. So what. The piddling amount funding that climate sceptics have received from sympathetic donors is insignificant when put up against massive Government funding (worldwide) directed toward a select group of ‘warmer’ scientists; funding that is probably directed by the increasing influence of the Greens in Western democracies. Climate science is now as much political a scientific. Thank goodness an alternative point of view can get funding so that there can be some antidote to what has been wall to wall propaganda promoting AGW.

It’s a wonder there aren’t more religious groups setting up poli pandering parleys. These religious groups have more votes than Ratana:
Budhist, Hindu, Baptist, Pentecostal, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbytarian, Catholic and Anglican. There are also sizable numbers of other Christian groups, one of which (Destiny) already runs a poli parade.

It’s worth noting that two parties didn’t join the flock of PR polies at Ratana – Act and United Future.

It might be stating the obvious but in relation to the occupy arrests (and other arrests at protests) those being arrested always overreact to the force being used. They know that it is being filmed and that in any court case and on the tele their apparent pain is great for the image of police brutality.

It has been a tactic for a long time and our beloved Ms Bradford, Minto et al were well known for it. This and other things to do are part of the instructions that the rent-a-mob explain before any protest.

I have a brother who is a professor at Canterbury, when I saw him at Christmas he scoffed at me for being skeptical of the consensus.
“You don’t believe 97% of climate scientists are right then?” he said.
“Depends on what you think they’re saying” said I, while wondering what happened to the brother I grew up with who was always skeptical.
“I agree the climate is warming, and I agree that CO2 plays a small part in it” I said. “I don’t agree it’s heading for catastrophe though, and if all those scientists really believe that themselves then what are they doing to save the world? Flying around the world to conferences? If they believed CO2 emissions were going to destroy the world they’d use video conferencing don’t you think?”

Of course, he’s in academia, where grant money funds his world, so he’ll have to keep his newly regained skepticism to himself for fear of being ostracised.

It’s dishonest of you to claim I said something (via a supposed quote) that I didn’t say.

Similar talking points are frequently repeated (including in this thread) to try and deny the validity of all climate science. It’s a standard tactic, it’s been used by tobacco interests, religious interests and energy interests to try and muddy research and valid debate on issues.

Please let me know what acceptable ‘label’ I should use to describe these interests and their pawns?

Some opposition to climate change measures is scientific and informed (a small minority), but most seems to be generated by vested interests who know how to recruit PR pawns. Of course neither the pawners or the pawns will admit that.

Eventually yes, but nothing imminent as far as I know. I’ve said a number of times (as you should know) that I’m doubtful what significant effects if any climate change will actually have in my lifetime.

I also think it’s important climate science continues and is not shouted down by business dominated interests. It’s important we know as much as possible about what may or may not be happening, and whether a catastrophe (or mild adverse or advantageous effects) could be imminent or not.

Given the global magnitude of this issue I think it’s important that climate science is conducted completely openly and honestly. So why are so many climate scientists evading freedom of information requests for their data and workings out?

I’m remaining consistent with my position that a warmer world is a better world Pete. I don’t believe there is any evidence that the warming we’re having is going to be catastrophic. In fact a warmer world would mean less deaths from cold related causes, lower energy costs and more food.

A skeptic, yes, but in denial of what? I certainly don’t deny I’ve stirred up the debate here a bit at times. Always guaranteed to get a bunch of bombardments.

I agree there are vested interests on various sides of the carbon tax/carbon trade arguments.

And I’ve said a number of times that because of that the climate isue will continue to be dominated by business and politics to the extent that if it was found conclusively that we were facing a major and imminent problem I doubt whether anything could be agreed to be done in time, if it were possible to do something about it.

a warmer world is a better world

The problem with climate change is it’s not that simple. It would be better for some and not for others, to varying degrees. A stormier world could be a problem anywhere, and regionally so could more droughts.

I wouldn’t mind if it was a bit warmer here, I’d like to be able to grow nectarines (I think oranges and chinese gooseberries are a bit much to hope for). But even if the world does warm there’s no guarantee it will warm for me, if more storms bubble up from the Antarctic my microclimate may actually cool overall, unless the tropical flows are stronger.

Our civilisation is based on the fact that the ice sheets have largely melted and allowed man to migrate to and colonise northern europe and north america ,not to mention having holidays on our lovely retreating glacier lakes in the South Island.

The issue is the activists and politicians getting in on the act and blaming honkey,as always, for all of the Earths’ current woes and imposing taxes and demanding us to lower our standards of living to avert ,oh my God,global catatrophe.

Meanwhile in a galaxy not too far away,the real driver of climate change/global warming continues,oblivious of our efforts to thwart it,to do what it has always done………..

We also survived the Cold War. It could be claimed we came close to catastrophic with that one.

We are going to run out of oil

Not for quite a while yet – but we could suddenly have an oil crisis that may have a severe impact. The Persian Gulf is looking iffier almost by the day at the moment. Most potential crises don’t pan out too badly, but one day the oil plug may be pulled, or worse, the atomic genie may escape the bottle.

And as I have often asserted, if we accept the premise that our GHG emissions are causing the world to warm with certain catastrophic consequences, what of any of the proposed solutions by governments (and academics and the IPCC etc) are going to make any statistically discernible difference? Because that is what really pisses me off the most about this issue – you can’t solve this by imposing more taxes on developed nations. You can’t solve this with wind farms. You can’t solve this by giving more money to Greenpeace. You can’t solve this by calling dissenters ‘deniers’. You can’t solve this by allowing a clique of publicly funded scientists to hide their data and calculations.

If I believed it was going to be catastrophic I’d be campaining for:
a huge increase in use of nuclear power
banning imports from China (suck on that Stephen Tindall, Chair of Climate Change Leadership Forum) and India etc.
banning non-essential air travel (hypocrisy by all those delegates to climate change conferences).
banning countries (like Australia) to buy billions of dollars of carbon credits from other countries to assuage their guilt

It was interesting to see that it was the libertarians who were most opposed to slavery

hj, yeh it was actually Democrats (who fling the word ‘racist’ at Republicans wantonly these days), who were all for slavery and opposed to getting rid of it.
Below is an excerpt from ‘Rules For Radical Conservatives’, by David Kahane, where he pretends to be Democrat (the Devil’s Advocate, ala The Screwtape Letters)

Being a party with its strongest roots in the Old South, Democrats back then were fervently in favor of slavery, and opposed all efforts to modify or end it. I don’t want to bore you with the involved and complex history that resulted in the three-fifths compromise in the Constitution (in which black slaves were counted as three-fifths of a human being for apportionment purposes, lest the slaveholding South wield political power all out of proportion to its eligible voters), the Missouri Compromise of 1820 (which regulated the admission of new slave states into the Union along geographical lines), and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened up slavery for a vote in new territories (which sent Bloody Kansas into paroxysms of violence).

No wonder we’re always advocating compromise! It was in response to the violence that the modern Republican Party was founded that same year in Ripon, Wisconsin, making it its mission to oppose the slavery-loving Democratic Party at each and every turn. Six years later, they elected the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, whom we still have to pretend to like. So when South Carolina fired upon Fort Sumter to start the Civil War, it was in effect a war declared by Democrats on Republicans, and from that moment on the strife has not lessened, and black people have been caught in the middle ever since. You didn’t hear much “tolerance” noise out of us in those days.

In the meantime, we fought a rearguard action against civil rights. We formed the Ku Klux Klan, to suppress Republican voter turnout and fight not only against civil rights for blacks, but, later, against Jews and Catholics as well. We had cheered the Dred Scott decision in 1857, when Chief Justice Roger Taney—a Democrat, appointed by a Democrat, Andrew Jackson —described black people as “an inferior order and altogether unfit to associate with the white race” and ruled that, being private property, they had no civil rights. When Plessy v. Ferguson came along in 1896, we cheered again when the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of “separate but equal,” endorsing the Louisiana court’s ruling.

African-Americans found few friends among the Democrats of the Solid South, where Democratic politicians such as George Wallace, the governor of Alabama; Lester Maddox, the governor of Georgia; and Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, led the charge against them. In 1954, in the wake of the historic Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that overturned Plessy, Governor Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the integration of Little Rock Central High School, only to be outgunned by his Commander in Chief, the Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

As a Democrat, Lyndon Johnson fought for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but the Republicans supported it in much higher percentages than the Democrats. And who, you ask, led the filibuster against it? Why, none other than Albert Arnold Gore, Sr., a close friend and confidant of Armand Hammer, one of the Soviet Union’s best and most effective agents against the U.S. during his long lifetime. And Senator “Sleepin’ ” Sam Ervin, later elevated to hero status by the Left for his pursuit of Richard Nixon during Watergate. And the late Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan himself, the longest serving senator in American history, the king of West Virginia pork, Robert “White Niggers” Byrd. What a swell crowd, and really something for all us progressives to be proud of!

And then, something magical happened. We made all y’all forget our racist past by the simple expedient of not only erasing it, but tossing all previous accomplishments of our newly adopted Victim Groups down the memory hole too. Gone was the Democrats’ irremediably racist past—hey! Sorry about that!—and in its place came the Party of Compassion, looking at its colored brothers in all their pathetic inability to do anything at all without a bunch of us guilty white liberals assisting them, and then helpfully improving their lives as we brought the formidable powers of our Ivy League training to bear on the Negro Problem.

It’s ironic that Pete gets pilloried from Kiwiblog to Red Alert to The Stranded (and there’s probably more that I haven’t observed). I actually have a great deal of respect for him on many issues, but casting aspersions based on $70k US of funding to skeptics when there’s mountains of evidence of millions (billions if you count all the government funding) of dollars funding the alarmist industry is not one of his finest moments.

Rosalie Thomas says the Hospital forced her to walk home at 2.30am. Bullshit! The Hospital discharged her after emergency treatment and she raised the issue of not having any means of getting home as she’d left her wallet at home. Regardless she didn’t have enough money to pay for a taxi (although that’s not made 100% clear in the article, more my inference.) She was offered a bus fare and a safe place to wait until the buses ran. That’s more than the hospital was required to do.

This happened to me once – I was visiting a friend in hospital when I suddenly fell ill and fainted. Just one of those things, but the doctor in the emergency room forbade me from driving for 72 hours just to be safe and public transport had finished by the time I was discharged. So I was also stranded in Lower Hutt when home was Porirua. The hospital was sympathetic but they are for treating ill people, not a transport service. All they offered was directions to a payphone. I had to ring a relative, get them out of bed and come and pick me up (because that’s what family do for each other). Then another two relatives went and retrieved my car from the hospital the next day.

So if people expect hospitals to start providing late night free taxis, how many extra cases will turn up on Friday and Saturday nights with imagined ailments, demand treatment and a free ride home?

Yes i respect the law in Utah, wether i agree with it or not is immaterial. The Law is the Law.
( also, i’m not likely to be caught gobbling in Utah anytime soon) Just like i’m not likely to be smoking dope in Indonesia.

We have extradition agreements with other countries, otherwise New Zealand could become safe haven
for all sorts of criminals. (do you believe for eg that if you are. say. a Pom who committed a murder in the UK
and later gain residency here then you are home free.)

Vagaries of Law in the USA is a misnomer. Law statutes are written down for all to see and everyone
has the right to defend themselves. The state must prove the Law was broken to convict. There is no vagary about it.
Regardless of what you refer to as ‘pressure’ if he can’t be extradited under our existing Law he wont be extradited.

Nobody can ‘use’ our police. Thats very condesending. (again the Law is the Law, Dotcoms legal eagles will be free to
argue against extradition under New Zealand Law in a New Zealand court.)

Trust me, the police can be used, I was one for for 25 years, its not condensation or anything remotely so. Lets just say the glamour factor does figure when it comes to some cases. Theres a couple of cops getting the passports ready now for a trip on the FBI. Not to mention political pressure, this warrant wasn’t sworn by some dectective Constable walking into the Registrars office at the North Shore District Court after a phone call from the States.

Murder is somewhat different than supplying a cloud for people to use , I would have thought that obvious.

This is what I have been saying all day, …if he can’t be extradicted under our law he won’t be,…….. but some see it as a given that because of aGrand Jury he’s on his way to Virgina? I hope it is far from it.

off to Virginia solely because he was indicted by a grand jury.

A judge, attorney-general, magistrate of sort etc … can order an extradition under US law.

Vagaries of Law in the USA is not a misnomer- the laws are there on the statute books but the application of those laws in the Courts can vary wildy. And that is before you get in front of a jury. Their appellate courts are also a minefield of inconsistency.

Look at the case of Dmitry Sklyarov, for example

Then you have the issue of the use of plea bargaining to contend with. Let’s say that you are charged with the offences that Dotcom is facing in the indictment: you are told by your lawyer that you are facing a 50 – 100 year sentence (look at the sentence Madoff got, for example) if convicted and the chances of conviction, regardless of the truth, are good. Then you are told that you have been offered a plea bargain that will see you convicted, but out in, say, 2 years. You are innocent (for arguments sake); do you take the deal?

And I agree with PaulEB that the Police can be used. Sometimes they don’t realise it, sometimes they do, but they are human and just as susceptible to being used or manipulated as anyone else.

So this is a case very much unlike a murder extradition. It needs careful consideration before anything is done.

what are you trying to say? Do you understand the process?

A grand jury is convened under law to consider the case against a person. It is a group of registered voters brought in by summons, in the same way that a petty jury (a trial jury) is summoned. Evidence is offered by the prosecution to establish a prima facie case and the grand jury considers it. If it agrees that there is a prima facie case then the grand jury can issue an indictment.

In many US jurisdictions it is the only way an indictment can be issued. It used to be that way in the UK, also, but they no longer use it there.

Once an indictment is issued, then the prosecution will, if necessary, apply for an extradition order and the whole issue heads overseas to whatever country the accused person resides in.

The use of the word grand in no way inflates the worth of the indictment. It simply means that an indictment has been issued. That is what needs to be focused on.

And I am not sure that the Attorney-General can order an extradition from NZ. I think it has to be a judge.

Paul never said he was used. He said the Police can be used. Work out the difference.

I suppose you will dispute with me when I say that I have seen police officers commit perjury, and have had officers and former officers admit to committing perjury? Most of it was done for ‘noble’ purposes, admittedly, but it was still perjury.

Police officers sometimes screw up, or are used without realising it. It happens. Doesn’t make them dishonest.

People are people, whether police or not. Some are good, some aren’t. So we commend the good ones and punish the bad. That is life.

The New Zealand Police are generally honest and I have an enormous amount of respect for them, but 73 police and two helicopters to apprehend 4 guys just sitting aroung making money in a way that is affecting not one person in this Country, please.

Meanwhile , real crime is not being dealt with. We pay our taxes for the NZ Police, not to be used a an arm of the FBI

Plea bargaining is a legitimate method in USA to save the state money and the court time.

Nothing in that system abrogates your right to put the state to proof.

The state still has to prove its case under the law to gain a conviction if the accused pleads not guilty.
Fuck. you and Pauleastbay sound like you would be a great team.

i don’t want to look at one individual case you may point to. That’s ridiculous.

you talk like a layman- takes everything at face value but doesn’t understand what actually happens. Like I used to tell my students, theory is a wonderful thing but the law is usually a different beast in practise.

The fact is that you don’t know what you are talking about. You should listen to PaulEB more, he actually does know what he is talking about.

thats a given and no body has argued against that,

but presently, this guy who has broken no law in New Zealand is remanded in custody for a month following hsi arrest on the say so of an affidavit taken to a secret Grand Jury hearing in another country.

Because evidently he is a flight risk. The bail hearing must have been a beaut with the Crown walking in with a firearm – to a bail hearing ( see dave A on No Bail thread) , goodness.

You brought up honesty, Dotcom would probably like a bit of that

Paddy’s wife has never had an orgasm, so they decide to go see a doctor to
