Extreme Droughts Were More Common 200-300 Years Ago, Study

A paper published today in Environmental Research Letters uses tree-ring proxies to reconstruct drought conditions of the American Southeast from 1665 to 2010. The authors find “The reconstruction shows that the recent droughts are not unprecedented over the last 346 years. Indeed, droughts of extended duration occurred more frequently between 1696 and 1820. Our results indicate that the era in which local and state water supply decisions were developed and the period of instrumental data upon which it is based are amongst the wettest since at least 1665.”

I note they use tree-ring proxies, famous after Kevin Trenberth carefully hand picked the ones that were used to launch the Hockey Stick fraud. Hope these climate researchers are more honest. Hard to be less honest.

Where are all the foaming CAGW prophets these days? It’s just not fun any more …. and I want them to stump up my share of the billions wasted on this nonsense

Something that stood out like a pea in porridge in Shearer’s speech was something new, in fact:

A completely new New Zealand.

That’s obviously not possible, we can’t throw everyone out and start again. Why not push for a better New Zealand? A lot about our country is pretty good already, why not build on that? ‘New’ New Zealand? Woolly eyed.

This is a good example of the reason why our police force need to sharpen up their handgun skills. Double tap to the head, costs a couple of dollars, saves a fortune in hospital, legal and prison costs.

Yesterday RightNow posited that Peter Freedman previously posted here as Maggie. It got me thinking about language analysis, and I found this – JGAAP – Java Graphical Authorship Attribution Program. I don’t have time, but a great geek project might be to set this up to automatically read and analyse KB posts to identify duplicate online identities. I’m sure there’d be plenty, and probably examples of people talking with themselves. Such fun.

On the Press comment section , some were calling for police to be armed after yesterday’s story in CHCh..they already have access to weaponry..my view would be that looking at Somalian refugees is more the crucial issue. How did the police already know him? Why did the police not shoot to kill? Were they afraid this would set off a few more Somalian time bombs around the city?

This am on TV1 Corrin Dann and blonde discussing. Embarrassment over ‘brighter future”. However Dann states that Shearer can do better and that the core of the speech is what was “needed”.

That sounds like an endorsement from an employee of the state broadcaster.

Double tap to the head?
Tactically the best place is the body mass, less chance of missing (which creates a danger to the shooter and general public) and can’t be accused by the wowsers of a shoot to kill policy.

Shearer was interviewed on NatRad this morning when he again pushed his “new” New Zealand.

There is plenty of spare space in the Pacific but Shearer will go out and listen to the people before announcing policy on exacly where Labour will create their New New Zealand.

Ruissel Norman suggested calling it New Greenland.

Winston Peters claimed Labour were just trying to differentiate from his Oldies New Zealand.

About Somalians… I think it would be unfair on Somalians to tar them all with the same brush (which is why I didn’t identify the guy’s race in my previous comment).

Does anybody have any FACTS about what proportion of Somalians here are criminals? I have seen some Somalians who are regulars in my local shopping centre and there seem to be two distinct groups. By far the smaller group are pretty closed, uncommunicative and wear headscarves etc, but the larger group look really nice, friendly, smiling and well-integrated into Kiwi lifestyle. This is only a superficial judgement, I know, but looks and behaviour can be quite revealing.

Have a look at Alpha Kiwis link earlier in this thread… internecine warfare between one group of Muslims and another…essentially one less radical group of Muslims fighting another more radical group of exponents of the religion of peace for the control of a mosque in Auckland…surely this kind of thing was the precursor to the situation in the UK where whole areas of cities like Bradford are now “no go” for non Muslims? It must have started as little internecine niggles that the rest of the Brits ignored as not their concern…Surely someone somewhere has done a thesis on the rise of radical Islam in Britain? On TV he was unable to say the Koran was wrong in prescribing stoning for gays and uppity women…And Ashraf was a very pleasant chap in person…when he ever did anything but smile benignly…

It can only end in tears, and its starting already….Was it Kingsley Amis who said “More will inevitably be worse?”

Islam is a dangerous ideology. Time for the west to wake up to the fact that historically the struggle between the west and Islam has been long running and has never gone away.
History lessons tend to have dates and events like Hastings 1066 as important(rightly) but events such as Tours 732, Manzikert 1071 the fall of Constantinople 1453, the various seiges of Vienna etc should be on the curiculum (not a chance).

The west has historically resisted the constant tide of militant Islam, today we seem content to quietly be drowned by it.

One sensitive claims client said she had been repeatedly told in writing that her details were kept within the unit and that only three people in the unit had access to her file. She and other sensitive claims clients have accused ACC of an appalling culture of sloppy privacy practices.

One said she had received nine letters of apology from the corporation for privacy breaches. Each time it said it took privacy seriously and each time it said it had put in place “systems to prevent this happening again”.

It must certainly “add insult to injury” to receive letters of apology from three times the number of people than you have been reassured have access to you file.

But of the news items I have seen or heard on this matter [and I admit of course I can’t be aware of them all] why does none say who actually received the emailed files, and what – if anything – did that person do with them?
That would be the first thing I’d ask and I wonder why no journalist asks the same question.

They did shoot to kill. They just can’t shoot straight most of the time when its really needed but manage to do so when they don’t need to. Lack of hunting experience.

Dave Mann: the problem with your argument – reasonable as it sounds on its face – is how do infidels tell the difference between a fanatic embryonic terrorist who would gladly send his child into a building with a bomb from the guy who wants to learn to play rugby and how to catch a snapper?

The 9/11 incidents in the US show that in the greater cause – and those 73 virgins they all get when they reach paradise as martyrs – Muslim terrorists are more than able to APPEAR perfectly westernised, to the point of drinking, gambling and sleeping with infidel women. They don’t all go around wearing a scowl and a tea towel on their heads.

As both I and and kowtow have pointed out, NO EUROPEAN COUNTRY has not had serious problems with Muslim immigrants: murders of ‘heretic’ film makers in Holland; beatings and killings of women who aren’t prepared to kowtow (sorry!) to their parents or clerics in France; Honour killings everywhere from England to Turkey, and even Australia. As I said earlier, what on earth makes us think it would be different here? And if we can’t ensure we only get the “good” ones who will be eternally grateful for an escape from the shithole countries they were born in, why take the risk of taking any? Do we wait until we have a couple of honour killings and a bus of unbelievers blown up here? And what do we do then if we allow it to go that far?

That was back in the days when the West was predominantly Christian – specifically Catholic. Even during the religious wars after the Reformation, the Protestants were toying with the idea of joining the moslems to defeat the Catholics.

But todays society is now known as “post christian”, so its lost its backbone – unles there is a resurgence of Christianity, or an aligned conservative moral culture, muslim victory is inevitable.

True, yet leading scientists tend to be non-religious and even those who are religious are more believers in the unknown rather than actually believing in a personal god listening to their everyday troubles.

Take your biases and bigotry away.

Oh, so it’s okay for you to trash an entire religion but heaven forbid anyone touch your precious little fairy tales.

All I am doing is pointing out that Islam is simply a more extreme version of the religious mindset and until one addresses the fundamental problem with Islam (i.e. it’s a religion) then there is no solid foundation on which to address the problem.

They’ve minimized the problem. But the problem still remains and so long as people accept that it’s legitimate to argue “it’s about faith” then Muslims can argue exactly the same thing, just with more extreme consequences.

Arguing we need to return to our Christian roots is exactly the opposite of what we need to do. We need less religion, not more.

Not sure what you are sorry for..the rise of islam. There are a lot of sites. Some have been banned.The Aussie site Winds of Jihad is an easy way to keep up.Sheik often gets material from Jihad Watch and other sites then adds his humour and take on things. Robert Spencer [US] from Jihad watch has written a lot of books…Gates of Vienna is another site….plus ex muslim sites..
In the UK , they let one group flourish in the Unis etc at the same time as all members of this group were locked up in the Middle East. They have also caused trouble in Aussie..they are here , with sympathizers at Auckland Uni and most likely at other Unis by now…. Hizb ut-Tahrir. The UK has not been able to rid themselves of these horrors and other horrors because of human rights laws and European legislation..they have been trying to send old ”hams are us” back to Jordan for what seems like forever.
Where muslims are really winning the war in the west is in the maternity wards. They call all the shots at CHCH women’s.
More than anything , it is a demographic war.
So many NZers are so naive. What has happened elsewhere , will happen here..well it already is..[ carjacking is a muslim speciality ] There has been lots of incidents in Aussie..riots in malls , a riot at Auburn hospital , rapes , gang rapes , car jacking etc If any of these things are ever reported here , they are greatly minimised.

Given the debates that have occurred here about free speech in recent days I wonder what people might think about the suggestion to close off the most recent David Bain thread?

I think we could have an interesting discussion about free speech in this context. Clearly as it is DPF’s forum he has every right to shut the conversation down, but is it ethically right? I think it is but then, like Yvette, my preference would be to shut it down. Every time it has appeared to die for a few hours I think, finally, it’s over – only for somebody to start it up again. But then shutting it down has been my preference for some time as it appears that a bunch of TradeMe yobs (both pro and anti-David Bain) have appeared to simply carry on the same endless war they conducted on that forum.

Thoughts?

Davids blog,his right to allow the on gong debate on Bain or not.
Periodically I have dropped in to see the state of the “debate” It long ago decayed into pure drible.
It would be no loss to close it down,However it would introduce the risk of migrating to GD and hence causing damage to the very nature of this blog.
Blogs by their nature are not the realm of free speech they are a personal reflection of the views of the owner.
That this particular blog does operate under the conventions of free speech is a reflection of the ethos of DPF who is open to debate and enjoys like most of us the intellectual stimulation it brings about.

Its a strange paradigm of communication that this brings about a Self regulating community under a benevolent dictator.

I enjoy reading all these comments and some of the ones on Islam are spot-on….. but methinks the PC mind police will be acting soon to close down threads on blogs like this under the catch-all classification of being ‘offensive’.

I reckon freedom of expression on the internet has about 5 years (max) to run before it is completely shut down along the lines already employed under the state’s guise of stopping IP ‘piracy’.

Enjoy this while it is still possible, for tomorrow the (metaphoric) black helicopters will come…..

I’m disappointed Farrar closed it down. It wasn’t affecting anyone else.

Harvard scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain phytoeostrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women.
