Here’s a review by Salon.com

The problem here is that Machtan’s book is being judged by its hype. And when you look past the hype to the book’s central thesis you are left with the unshakable conclusion that Machtan is on to something. You may well ask why, with the thousands of books written on Hitler, no one else has caught on to this. The answer is that much of what Machtan says has been written about before and that many people have shared his opinions for decades. (Did anyone think the image of Hitler as flaming queen came solely from the fertile imagination of Mel Brooks?)

Several of Machtan’s most reliable sources (including the classic biographies by Joachim Fest and Alan Bullock, as well as Bullock’s dual biography of Hitler and Stalin) have raised many of the same points as Machtan has, though their authors chose not to emphasize them or pursue them at length. Why? Possibly for no more reason than that their author’s interests lay elsewhere. As Voltaire is said to have said, history does not change, but what we want from it does.

But the biggest problem with Machtan’s book (which has been translated by John Brownjohn) isn’t the reliability of his sources but his mode of argumentation. He accepts what fits his thesis and rejects what doesn’t. One feels, at times, that one is reading an internal F.B.I. report from the J. Edgar Hoover era rather than an evenhanded work of scholarship in which the author is ready to be led by the facts.

He asks rhetorical questions designed to lead the reader to answer them in a manner that supports his argument, even when alternative explanations are at least as plausible. My whole purpose was to support Fletch, who brought up Scott Lively, who has supposedly been discredited because he wrote a book about gay Nazis. While as the evidence for Hitler being gay quite voluminous, if “circumstantial” and full of “innuendo and insinuation”. Even Cha’s latest review that he’s posted at least supports the idea that Hitler may have been gay.

Personally, I think Hitler was possessed, and that’s why he did what he did. The gayness was only a part of it.

Other documents Klingenschmitt threatened to turn over to Congress included a petition, or something similar, that supposedly showed he was supported by “30 million evangelicals” and a “conference report ordering the [Secretary of the Navy] to rescind [non-sectarian prayer] policy.”
The Navy declined to settle with Klingenschmitt in exchange for his offer to drop his complaint.

Your utterances here have gone much further than just saying, factually, Maori are over-represented in the crime stats. The difference between you and I is that you blame Maori, as a people, whereas I factor in the effect of the colonisation process in contributing to that sad statistic.

And to say the treaty process must end when you, the voice of imperial colonisation, say it should is to ignore the voice of those most affected by the colonisation – our indigenous people.

Put most simply, the treaty process can only end when Maori are no longer downtrodden and marginalised and over-represented in the crime stats.

Your risible “One law for all” is anti-Maori, therefore racist by definition.

[DPF: If it is all about colonisation, then why are PI over-represented in crime stats, yet Asians under-represented?]

* Antonio Gaspari, who authored “The Jews, Pius XII, and the Black Legend”, chronicled the Nazi-fascist actions in Rome with testimonies from Jews who were saved by Pius requesting assistance from Religious (Over 150 Church institutions in and around Rome helped Italian Jews.)

* Martin Tagliacozzo, the leading authority on Roman Jews in the Holocaust: “I have a folder on my table in Israel entitled ‘Calumnies Against Pius XII.’…without him, many of our own would not be alive.”

* Sir Martin Gilbert: The noted British historian and a Jew, stated that Pius deserved thanks not blame.

* Richard Breitman, authorized by the United States Government to study World War II’s secret espionage documents, the only historian allowed to do so, observed they proved the extent to which Hitler distrusted the Holy See because it hid Jews.

* London’s “Jewish Chronicle”: “Before during and after the Second World War, he tried to carry a message of peace. Confronting the monstrous cruelties of Nazism, Fascism and Communism, he continually proclaimed the virtues of humanity and compassion.”

* Dr. Joseph Nathan, who represented the Hebrew Commission: “Above all, we acknowledge the supreme Pontiff and the religious men and women who, executing the directives of the Holy Father, recognized as their brothers and with great abnegation, hastened to help them, disregarding the terrible dangers to which they were exposed.”

* Adolph Eichmann, Nazi SS Lieutenant Colonel: In early 2000 the government of Israel, after nearly 40 years, released the diaries of Eichmann who had been executed in 1962 “for crimes against the Jewish people and against humanity.” Eichmann wrote of the deportation of Jews from Rome and that the Vatican “vigorously protested the arrest of Jews, requesting the interruption of such action; on the contrary, the Pope would denounce it publicly.”

So, if they Jews themselves – the very people who would be likely to be critical of the Pope if he had ignored their suffering – during and after the war, offered such praise for the Pope, then who is anyone else to be critical?

+ The Synagogue Council of America

No serious scholar contests the evidence that Pius XII took direct and indirect measures to save Jews from the Nazi death machine.
