National up the ante with the Waitangi Tribunal. Bill English…

…said he had asked the tribunal to deliver its findings by August 24 because the Government would need to make decisions by the first week of September if it were to proceed with the partial float of Mighty River Power this year.

He said the Government would make its decision then whether it had the tribunal’s findings or not, “on the basis of all the information available to us at that time, including the Waitangi Tribunal’s memorandum of July 30″.

The ball has been lobbed back in the Tribunal court, but a risky escalation by National.

You are silent on Collins latest move against John Judge. How low can Collins sink before you think enough is enough? Judge was called in by Nick Smith to pull ACC Ono a far more financially disciplined organisation. He by all accounts made good progress. Now Collins has all bit suggested Judge is the source of the Pullar leak, and has also suggested he destroyed evidence. Hopefully she can back up her claims.

Now wiping data from computers you hand back is sensible not sensational. Collins is throwing out conspiracy theories which makes me suspicious of her motives.

Can you provide the link to the conspitacy theories. I saw an interview with Collins where she refused to draw any conclusions and said that the information about Judge’s home computer was disclosed as part of an OIA request.

As a matter of interest. What reaction would there have been had the info about the computer been withheld? The shit would have hit the fan big-time.

Sensible Sentencing Guilty of Elder Abuse

“Garth McVicar’s recent speech to the Wanganui Probus Clubs, was clearly intended to make people believe that we live in a dangerous and unsafe world, compared to forty years ago”. Said Kim Workman, of Rethinking Crime and Punishment in a speech to the Waterloo Probus Club today. “In our view it is irresponsible to mislead the public in that way. When that message is directed at our senior citizens, it becomes a form of elder abuse.”
When, after hearing Garth McVicar speak, elderly people are too frightened to walk to the corner dairy to buy an ice-cream, the Sensible Sentencing Trust itself becomes a threat to public safety”.

Firstly, Mr McVicar recalled a time in the 1970s when crime rates were low. Crime rates were not low in the 1970’s. The crime rate increased steadily from the 1950’s through the 1970’s and peaked in 1992. The crime rate has been declining since then.
Secondly, he said that in the 1970’s the public was safe because of the‘bobby on the beat”. The fact is that since the 1950’s the per capita number of sworn police has more than doubled. I was a Police officer in the period 1958 to 1976, and I it is clear to me that the community are getting better protection from the Police than ever before.
Thirdly, he said that “Six police officers are assaulted every day these days.” There is no evidence of a serious increase in the number of assaults against the Police. While assaults against the Police increased from 216 in 1999 to 412 in 2009, the general population increased by 480,700 during that period, and the number of sworn police officers increased by 1,766. Over that period the number of assaults per sworn police officer has barely changed.
Fourthly, he claimed that there is a loss of respect for the police. There is no evidence that respect for the Police is on the decline. The 2011 Citizens’Satisfaction Survey, shows that more people than before are expressing high levels of trust and confidence and are feeling safe in their neighbourhoods and town centres.
Fifthly, he said that “New Zealand used to be the safest country in the Western world”.
New Zealand is still considered to be one of the safest countries in the OECD. Recent research at Victoria University showed that while people, (including those living in high crime areas), considered their own locality safe, they were much more likely to report that crime problems were serious and increasing across the nation as a whole. The research showed that this view came from sensationalist media coverage, and alarmist groups such as the Sensible Sentencing Trust who promoted public fear of crime; a fear unjustified by the facts.
For some years now, the Sensible Sentencing Trust has been spreading misleading and inaccurate information about the state of crime and justice in New Zealand, and has played a major part in unnecessarily increasing fear of crime among our senior citizens. They understand that if they can promote fear amongst the elderly, it will increase support for their policies, which are based on emotion rather than evidence. The creation of moral panic within our senior citizens, contributes to public fear and causes the elderly to feel unsafe.
Rethinking has today written to the Wanganui Chronicle, drawing attention to the misleading information. It has also asked that the letter be forwarded to the Probus Clubs of Wanganui. The letter can be read at:

Stephen Franks backs the National escalation:

Stephen Franks, says he is “heartened” by threats from the Crown to push ahead with asset sales this year.

Franks said the Maori Council, which brought the Waitangi Tribunal claim, was clearly engaged in a tactical process to gain shares in Mighty River, and the Government had responded by stepping up its game.

“It looks as if it’s a tactic in a game that so far the Crown hasn’t been playing strong hands in, telling the other side that they’re not cowed by it, and they’ll allow the appropriate process to happen but they won’t necessarily change course.”

The Government statement said it would make decisions on the Mighty River sale on the basis of information before it, which was seen as a threat to go ahead with the sale regardless of whether the Waitangi Tribunal had issued its report.

Franks said the Crown was sending a message to the Maori Council that “we won’t allow the timetable to drive the outcome, and if you think you can push it out until we get desperate, then that’s not going to work”.

Alternatively, it was “just conceivable” the Government was positioning itself to pull the plug on the mixed ownership model.

Congratulations to the Govt. for standing up to the W. Tribunal. With the help of commentators the Tribunal has had a free ride on the water right issue. There is a drive by Maori to give the WT full court status (as noted by David Garret their findings have now become ‘directions’ rather than ‘recommendations’) with powers to ‘direct’ Government for ever and a day. (This will no doubt feature in the constitutional review). Key knows that he has public support for rejecting over-the-top Maori claims but the more liberal (weak-kneed) members of his caucus may not give him the backup he needs. Another ‘crisis’ meeting on Monday with the Maori Party; and the MSM will once again dare them to walk (yawn).

“It is a real shock to discover Macdonald has admitted to what are acts of sabotage.”

Not the usual low life toe rag, but I guess it depends on whether you exclude an award winning and seemingly respectable farmer from being a ‘low life’.

Nookin read the article. It is Collins who put out there that Judge had wiped the computer and changed his computer in April. If not to besmirch Judge what brilliant conclusion can you draw. Collins can only have made these allegations to point the finger at Judge otherwise why make them.

Great as an example of how to use language and statistics to smear good folk who are trying to make a difference in our society.

Note the appeal to victimhood identity politics…..”elderly abuse”.
The use of statistics in this context is also deceitful.

Violent crime is up and society has changed.We have the evidence of our own eyes. How many 14 and 15 year olds were involved in rape and murder in the ’70’s?

Police numbers may have increased but so have their duties ,particularly as social workers and that keeps them off the street where we the public want them.

The right is constantly attacking the status of teachers for a number of reasons:

Education is a major area of government spending and teachers’ wages are the lion’s share of the education budget. If the fat elite want to pay less tax, then they need less government spending. Paying teachers less is one route to that. Unqualified teachers in charter schools, which have the power to set their own pay rates and to run for a profit, is all part of driving teachers’ pay down.
To reduce the overall standard of teaching in this country and ultimately produce a dumbed down, acquiescent population – a majority underclass of poorly educated workers if you like – who will work for peanuts and do as they’re told.

I have met Kim Workman and I can testify that he is a good bloke who has been involved with trying to make a difference in the criminal justice system for many years. He really wants to see people given the chance to reform. He really wants to make a positive difference in people’s lives. He has been frustrated for many years with the failure of the justice system to see any change in people and he is frustrated with the high recidivism rates. And that is all fair enough. I believe he is a man of honesty and integrity who is genuinely motivated by compassion and Christian sense of justice to try and help those people who have become involved in the criminal justice system.

Having said that, he runs against that most implacable of foes, our base human nature. For example I remember a fellow, I will call him Dave, who spoke to our church one Sunday morning who was an ex-criminal, involved in drugs and assaults and robbery. And he testified how when he came to Jesus as Lord and saviour his whole life changed. And so he is going around testifying to the change that Jesus made in this life and trying to help others get off a life of crime. I was impressed with his testimony.

However the other thought that struck me, was how much he was committed to living a life of crime. He committed multiple offences in multiple locations time after time after time. He had no interest in changing. To be honest Dave was a guy that just needed to be locked up. For the safety of the community he needed to be locked up.

And that is the difficulty. Until such time as a person wants to change, it is very difficult for any treatment programs to work. Dave did change after a religious conversion. But until then any attempt at reform just seem to be wasted.

We have a guy that hangs around our church, and various other churches and charities. He sniffs petrol and more recently he has started drinking the stuff. He has no interest in giving up his addiction to petrol. He wants to be wasted. When he is not wasted he is looking for food and more petrol, so he can get wasted again. Again he is someone who in an ideal world would be locked up for his own safety. So he just can’t get petrol. Because right now he doesn’t want to change. The sad thing is we will find his body one-day, one morning when his nervous system gives out. That’s what happens, in a year or two he is likely to be dead. Which in my mind is a tragedy.

But that would be where I would differ from Kim Workman. I just believe in the basic Christian principle of the sinful state of mankind. Which is also a Conservative principle – that we need to restrain evil. That sometimes people need to be locked up to restrain them from more criminal activity and for the safety and welfare of the community.

I would like to support Kim Workman and his ideas more. I just feel they run against the reality of human nature.

Mikey: Found it – or at least my response to him. The claim was made in a press release Workman put out in February 2009. He also said “three stikes” would cost $7.5 billion over 25 years to implement; a futher $1 billion a year to operate, and see the prison population rise to 22,000.
I have asked him publicly to tell us when this anticipated rise will begin (prisoner numbers are currently falling) but he doesn’t seem interested in discussing what he said back then.

It’s an interesting statement, which runs counter to the facts. No figures immediately at hand, but from memory, Maori and PI receive a disproportionate amount of health and education services when compared to other racial groups. With Maori especially it has always been the case, leading to the early establishment of ‘native’ schools at the request of Maori leaders to better prepare their people for the European way; Ngati Porou were especially alive to this with Ngata making several pronouncements relating to educational and his tribe. It was also recognised that Maori and PI health was simply not up to snuff in respect of various endemic and introduced diseases / illnesses and appropriate health measures were introduced (especially in Northland) to deal with the problem and improve Maori health. All this is historically verifiable, should anyone care to do so. On this basis, to state that ‘Maori/Pacific don’t have access to health services etc” is historically wrong, and can only be attributed to careful and convenient misinformation.

ALL New Zealand citizens have access to health care, and I am advised that there are in additional special targeted health-related schemes specifically intended for both Maori and PI. BUT whether or not the members of these these groups care to take advantage of these is an individual choice. Sadly, for a variety of reasons , (including cultural, lack of knowledge, lack of money, laziness, lack of transport) choices are made that mean that individuals within the groups concerned, do not care to take advantage of what they are offered, and, THROUGH THEIR OWN ACTIONS miss out. This is of course a fact that rarely emerges in conversations with Europeans, and is never mentioned by the largely-European activists of various anti-government persuasions who seize on such things and use them for their own political ends. Sadly, truth is easily manipulated, and with the thriving ‘grievance’ industry plays into the hands of those who have their own agendas’.

Despite the above of course, it is ultimately it once again a case of horses and water, and what actions the individual takes to look after themselves. Personal responsibility is not taught now and it is sooo much easier to complain than admit that one stuffed-up, especially as there are so many (European activists) ready to agree with you and to persuade you (sans actual facts), that yes, you are hard done by, you poor hard-done-by and downtrodden native person you. The services are available, but whether they are made use of cannot, of course, be made compulsory.

One wonders what Ngata, Buck and Carroll would have made of the current situation.

Kowtow – There are of course two sides to this story. I agree that if you have an appointment you should make it or call in a reasonable time to cancel if unable to attend. One of my stepsons had his appointment cancelled 3 times whilst he was on his way to them having taken time of work! On a 4th occasion when he called to cancel 3 days beforehand, as he wasn’t able to get the time off work, he was told off for wasting everyone’s time and that the public health system was a privilege not a right! When he finally got to a 5th appointment he was kept waiting for 3 hours and got in trouble with his boss for being late back to work! I bet there is no mention of this in the story!

Jared Lee Loughner was just another lone nut, doing something random, for absolutely no reason, wasn’t he. (How come the media very often give them 3 names? Noticed that? Wonder why?)

My dig is at the Aotearoan lefty media who constantly bleat on about the lack of access for certain folk to health etc etc

It would appear there’s more than enough access,for goodness sake there aren’t white supremacists blocking the doors!
It’s the fact that so many can;t be arsed.

Same with dental,our dental care for U18s is free and universally available, What is one of the leading causes of child admission to hospital? Yep a lack of dental care at home. So some folk are so shit at looking after their teeth they chock the hospitals!Preventable problems being treated expensively in hospital.

A blonde is flying in a two-seater airplane with just the pilot.

What a treat to hear the Real True New Zealand Anthem, played just as it should be.

I remember with pride how our anthem used to be played by a brass band at international rugby games.

Alas, sadly, nowadays the Maori with their forced on us version have hijacked what we go to the park for – to watch rugby, not to watch/listen to opera star type singing, first in one language, then in another.

What other country does this?
None I would venture.

The thing that really had me laughing was moarir language week
In the herald they had one hundred Maori words we all should know
Seems the Maori of old had seven days in a week twelve months and four seasons to a year! Fuckin made up bullshit
Fully one quarter of the words we all should know are made up bullshit words from after colonisation and mostly corruptions of English

Well excuse me. There’s not many subjects I like to get my teeth stuck into but when one comes up, I’ll do as many rain dances as I please.
When I went to school, no languages were compulsory and that’s the way it should be.
If I choose to learn another besides english, it’ll be one that is useful to me throughout the world.

I knew Kim Workman years ago . He is an honourable person much more interested in the facts than MCvicar. The person who called Kim Workman a sickly white liberal is also casual with the facts but hey why let facts get in the way of a cult following. At least Workman has experience as a police officer. McVicar has no relevant experience whatsoever.
