In capitulating to the “Eurocentrism” critique, the educational establishment has reached the point of reducing education to a level below that of ordinary council politics: education is now to be a matter of pressure-group politics based on the totally false assumptions of racism.

If there are now more Maori, Pacifika, or Asian students than pakeha students in an area, then that fact is to be allowed to determine the substance of education, in the belief that these groups somehow “secrete,” as it were, a different kind of civilization and culture than do pakeha and require a correspondingly different kind of education.

Schools and universities in NZ have demonstrated such utter philosophical corruption in connection with this subject, that if there were a group of students who could be found willing to assert with pride their descent from the Vandals or Huns and to demand courses on the cultural contribution of their ancestors, the schools would provide such courses. All that the students would have to do to get their way is to act the part of their ancestors and threaten to burn down the school. 😎

But what best sums up everything involved is this:

From now on, in NZ, a student is to go through twelve years of union schooling, and the explicit goal of his education is that at the end of it, if he envisions Captain Cook being greeted by spear-carrying savages, and he happens not to be white, he should identify with the savages – and if he does happen to be white, and therefore is allowed to identify with Cook, he should not have any idea of why it is any better to identify with Cook than with the savages. 😎

Today, the critics of “Eurocentrism” rightly refuse to accept any form of condemnation for their racial membership. They claim to hold that race is irrelevant to morality and that therefore people of every race are as good as people of every other race. But then they assume that if people of all races are equally good, all civilizations and cultures must be equally good.

Now such a program means the explicit obliteration of distinctions between levels of civilization, and between civilization and savagery. It presents ignorance as the equivalent of knowledge, and superstition as the equivalent of science. Everything–logic, philosophy, science, law, technology–is to be ignored, and a culture limited to the level of making dugout canoes is to be presented as the equivalent of one capable of launching space ships. 😎

And all this is for the alleged sake of not offending anyone who supposedly must feel inferior if such a monumental fraud is not committed. 😎

Race is not the determinant of culture. Not only is Western civilization open to the members of every race, but its present possessors are also potentially capable of losing it, just as the people of the Western Roman Empire once lost the high degree of civilization they had achieved. What makes the acceptance of the “Eurocentrism” critique so significant is that it clearly reveals just how tenuous our ability to maintain Western civilization has become.

This is no longer an educational system. Its character has been completely transformed and it now clearly reveals itself to be what for many decades it has been in the process of becoming: namely, an agency working for the barbarization of youth.

The value of education is derived from the value of civilization, whose guardian and perpetuator education is supposed to be. An educational system dedicated to the barbarization of youth is a self-contradictory monstrosity that must be cast out and replaced with a true educational system. But this can be done only by those who genuinely understand, and are able to defend, the objective value of Western civilization.

However:

Once one recalls what Western civilization is, the most important thing to realize about it is that it is open to everyone. Including that of unionists and academics. 😎

Western civilization is not a product of geography. It is a body of knowledge and values. Any individual, any society, is potentially capable of adopting it and thereby becoming “Westernized.” The rapidly progressing economies of the Far East are all “Western” insofar as they rest on a foundation of logic, mathematics, science, technology, and capitalism–exactly the same logic, mathematics, science, technology, and capitalism that are essential features of “Western” civilization.

Indeed, important elements of “Western” civilization did not even originate in the West. The civilization of the Greeks and Romans incorporated significant aspects of science that were handed down from Egypt and Babylon. Modern “Western” civilization includes contributions from people living in the Middle East and in China during the Dark Ages, when Western Europe had reverted to virtual barbarism. Indeed, during the Dark Ages, “Western” civilization resided much more in the Middle East than in Western Europe.

It is conceivable that if present trends continue, in another century it might reside more in the Far East than in the West.

The truth is that just as one does not have to be from France to like French-fried potatoes or from New York to like a New York steak, one does not have to have been born in Western Europe or be of West European descent to admire Western civilization, or, indeed, even to help build it.

But NZ teachers don’t think like that! 😎

The intrest bill was 3/4 of my wages without any principal.

What is really worth watching is the Western Media’s reaction to this. Watch it closely and compare it to the protests and treatment of the Libya, Egypt and Syrian “uprisings” and the scales will fall from your eyes about what the real agenda is. Remember these protesters are not the usual rent a mob Islamists but secular Turks who want to maintain the Republic as founded by Ataturk. These protesters in the main, are very Western orientated.

Are we going to be hearing journalists fawning over a “Turkish Spring” and egging on governments to send weapons and communications equipment to the “Free Turkish Army”? Yeah right.

I’m with you on that Pete; built my first home in 1982, and had two mortgages. The second was a mortgage of last resort, through an insurance company, and to get the mortgage my wife and I had to have double the mortgage value in insurance. There were certainly no banks fighting one another to lend you money in those days, and the interest rates were horrific; I seem to remember my second mortgage being at around 23% at one point.

could only come from a rag as poor as The Economist.

Rob Muldoon actually wanted ‘business as usual’ for ordinary Kiwis in the face of a changing world (eg UK joining the EU), but had run out of options in 1984.

KS, in 1983 I had no problem at all finding lenders while buying a house – I was 30, married with children and earning $40,000 which probably helped – but first mortgage was 13%, second 23%.

The gummint at the time also gave you $8,000 at 3% for five years if it was your first house.

It was this $8,000, after 23/13% mortgages and the great and good Sir Roger doing his thing, that proved hardest to pay back, particularly as I worked in a primary-based industry at the time.

Colville 8:30 am That saga had its own special on TV3 some weeks back. I can’t remember 100% but I think it was expansion of business that got them. They were apparently shut out of one local market undercut by competitor I think selling milk or something… and then their bank refused to re-finance and sent in receivers.

Something like that. They took a risk on a business venture and it didn’t come off… bottomline.

In 1975 the maximum mortgage “any” Bank would lend you was $15,000.
I had to go to a private lender (Solicitor) for a balance.
Later we were paying 20.5% mortgage rate, on the bank funds.
We copped well despite these things.

The current central and local government assumption is that private individuals, either first home buyers or investors, will buy these houses. They also assume that private developers will finance and build these dwellings before selling them to individuals.

The last surge of housing developments in the mid 2000s was financed to the point of building completion by a combination of off-the-plan deposits from buyers and loans by finance companies.

That financing is now gone, particularly for the type of higher density apartments and town houses that are mandated by the Auckland Plan and likely to be the most affordable. Finance companies no longer exist and banks are now particularly wary of new apartments and town houses in the wake of the leaky building debacle and uncertainties about body corporates.

If banks do lend on these sorts of buildings it is only with big deposits, which puts them out of reach for many first home buyers and investors.

Then there is the bigger issue of how home buyers would finance their purchase, even if the housing development was consented, financed and built for a reasonable price. This is the dirty little secret at the heart of our economy.

New Zealand’s households are already up to their eyeballs in debt.

Governor Wheeler pointed out in passing in his speech that New Zealand households remain very highly leveraged at 145% of disposable income.

That is higher than the 130% peak hit by American households in 2007 and is barely below the 153% peak hit in New Zealand in 2009.

3. Economists look at Foreign debt and wonder why it is so high. Economists then look at NZ residential mortgage and wonder why it is so high. Economists look at our tiny disposable income and again wonder why we can support so much debt and why debt is so high.
Entreprenuer class migrants
1. Entrepreneur class migrants must invest $1.5million into New Zealand for a period of 5 years. One of the categories is new built housing.
2. Economists wonder how we will build. Well guess what, all these new migrants, and we are bringing in 60k to 70k new migrants every year and these guys can buy and can build.
Economists keep forgetting that we are operating in a global market. Our policies and OCR is dated as a tool. It only works when we are looking at a local context. It does not work in the global context. High interest rates relative to the world only hurts and hinders New Zealanders. It benefits the rest of the world to the detriment of New Zealanders.
Interest rates are already too high. Our profitability is being stripped which means 3rd world wages and tiny uncompetitive companies in the global context. We will remain a one horse milk producer until we see interest rates more competitive from a global context.

Take a trip to the Northern Hemisphere. They have had the coldest March on record. Winters are increasingly harsh. Thousands of deaths have been attributed to the cold. One source claimed 5000 died in the UK alone, mostly elderly folk. It is not helped by the warmist cult jacking up the price of electricity, on the basis it is too warm !

It would be funny if it were not so sick.

Not so ‘funny’ for those who are suffering in the global financial meltdown – largely caused by the collapse of the DERIVATIVES market – which John Key helped to set up when he was the Head of Derivatives for Merrill Lynch, in 1999, at the same time the Glass Steagall Act was repealed and effectively left the Derivatives Market unregulated?

(At the same time John Key was a Foreign Exchange Advisor for the New York Federal Reserve).

Lovelock does not miss a chance to criticise the green movement that has long paid heed to his views. “It’s just the way the humans are that if there’s a cause of some sort, a religion starts forming around it. It just so happens that the green religion is now taking over from the Christian religion. I don’t think people have noticed that, but it’s got all the sort of terms that religions use. The greens use guilt.

Patrick Moore was a founder of Greenpeace back in the early 70s. He was a radical environmentalist who became a sensible environmentalist.

He describes in detail his growing disillusionment with Greenpeace. He came to see that these people were ideologically-driven activists, not scientists, so they were often going off half-cocked, lambasting things which were not in fact harmful or dangerous.

The last straw was when Greenpeace decided to run with a global ban on chlorine. “This is when Greenpeace really lost me. As a student of advanced biochemistry, I realized chlorine was one of the 92 natural elements in the periodic table and that it is essential for life. You don’t just go around banning entire elements, especially when life without them would be impossible!”

He also talks good solid sense on the contentious issue of climate change. He reminds us that climatology science is only a few decades old, and there is a great deal of diversity of opinion within the community. And climate science is about two quite different things: current facts versus future predictions. It is in the latter area that we often get into so much trouble.

He offers plenty of detailed discussion on this issue. Scare-mongering about polar bears is one case he tackles head on. The truth is, in 1960 there were around 6,000 polar bears, whereas today there are some 20,000 to 25,000. It is not weather conditions but hunting that is mainly responsible for their numbers.

Moore points out how greatly global temperatures vary, and how there have been warmer periods in the earth’s history. He believes that CO2 emissions may in fact be mostly beneficial, “possibly making the coldest places on earth more habitable and definitely increasing yields of food crops, energy crops, and forests around the entire world.”

Enough to make you choke on your dinner on this evenings One News: Tama Iti turning up to Parliament in a Rolls Royce and looking like a tattooed Odd Job with his bowler hat. The Crown giving Tuhoi an apology and $170 Million dollars with the rights to co-manage Te Urewera National Park with the Government – then after 5 years they get to self-rule. What exactly does that mean? It doesn’t sound good to me. Sounds separatist.

Personally, I don’t think the Govt had anything to apologize for. I’m betting there were atrocities on both sides.
Will there ever be a finish to these endless hand-outs?

The lament is echoing up and down the country: if only Auckland could build a lot more houses the Reserve Bank could avoid an interest rate hike that hurts everyone else from Kaitaia to Bluff.

Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler even suggested this week a rate cut was possible if a ‘supply response’ actually happened to dampen the current surge in Auckland’s house prices.

There is no such thing as affordable housing. There is just a housing market.

Aggregate prices in that market are structural.

Any government attempt to manipulate the market without addressing the structural causes of property inflation will fail.

The sooner the government introduces a program to resolve the main issue of foreign ownership generated through the current account deficit, the sooner house prices will become more stable.

Yeh, well, as someone who was watching the news with me said, how long before they blow all their money then come back to the Govt with the begging cup? Even if they do attain self-rule, the Govt will be bailing them out – and probably more than now.

I spoke to a member of a prominent Maori ‘activist’ family about what happens to Non-Maori in New Zealand once Maori attain ‘Sovereignty’…the answer wasn’t pleasant.

Look at what Doc did to them when it was handed the park. Never ever had a problem before that and hopefully we will return to good relationships in the use of the park.

KevinH, what about the graves of those who were here BEFORE the Maori and whom the Maori slaughtered to extinction?
Many of those skeletons have been ground up.

When Governor Bowen came to the Northern Wairoa in the late 1860s, he met with 600 odd assembled Maori from all over Northland at Te Kopuru. He put it to those assembled the question of “who did these ancient skeletons belong to?” Maori replied they did not know who these early peoples were and to “do with them what you wish, they are not our people.” This is recorded in Bowen’s papers and journals of the time, which can be read in the Alexander Turnbull Library. Around 60,000 of these skeletons were taken to Eden Mill in Auckland over three years and ground up for fertilizer
– `Bone Dust,’ but there are still many more in sites around.

I wonder if the descendants of those people will ever get justice.
