Charleston

On Monday, we had our biggest driving day, doing over 700 miles from West Florida up to Florence, South Carolina. To break up the day we thought we would detour to Charleston and have dinner there.  A great decision as Charleston is absolutely lovely. Next time I’m in that region, definitely want to spend more time there.

A typical side road, with paving and trees.

Almost every house near the waterfront is like this – all two and three story buildings in that old style.

CH0004

They all have shutters.

Down at the waterfront.

CH0006

The waterside boardwalk.

CH0007

Houses like this are not the exception, but the norm. Hate to think what they cost.

CH0008

The statue is of Colonel William Moultie who defended the city against the British during the American Revolution. He later became a General and Governor of South Carolina

CH0009

The civil war also saw much fighting here.

CH0010

Note many of the houses have gas fired lanterns hanging outside. They give the entire neighbourhood a feel of living 200 years ago.

A pineapple fountain at the waterfront.

After dinner and a walk, we went to the roof top bar. It’s great, and a must do. The bar takes up the entire roof of an office building, and has great views of the city.
