How the hell could Russia launch a massive strike against Saudi Arabia when it has zero troops in the ME, zero airbases in the ME and no naval presence there and any air strikes launched from Russia itself would have to overfly Turkey, a member of Nato well set up to intercept anything coming into its terrirory from Russia if it wants.

I think both constitute a great threat. For certain acts (murder, rape etc.) a threshold has been crossed which I don’t think adds up in a linear fashion if you continue to commit those acts. Once is enough to define the character of the person who does it.

Sentencing has to make sense. It should reflect the gravity of the offending taken as a whole, not some sort of prescriptive approach arbitrarily defined by the number of offenses. The real problem that exists is that people are not satisfied with the length of sentencing for what most consider very serious crimes (e.g. punching a baby).

I feel a little bit ill…I just agreed with an amendment that Trevor Mallard proposed to the Animal Protection Act. I felt strongly enough that I sent Nathan Guy an email through the link on Labour’s website! Just feels wrong but it is for the right reasons so that ok right? I did un-tick the box agreeing to be spammed by Labour though and I did alter the wording to state that “it pains me to agree with anything Trevor Mallard proposes”! The issue is testing legal highs on animals which I think is completely wrong and I can’t see the logic given that people have been willing to test this stuff on themselves for the last 10 years or more and happily pay for the privilege!

You don’t think so? I beg to differ. HMS Penelope was a light cruiser in the Second World War. She had a very checkered career including running aground and having her ballasts flooded on one of her early voyages. She was bombed and shelled so many times that they called her HMS Pepperpot – they plugged all her holes with large wooden pegs – but her main claim to fame was the fact that she was the only vessel torpedoed while at top speed. Very much like our Penny. A battered, bloated old clanger barrelling headlong into disaster, destruction and, ultimately, oblivion.

Ugly Truth, how is todays Iraq to be part of a region dominated by the USA – it is a Shia majority government with closer ties to Iran than the USA. The oil contracts did not go to American companies etc.

As for the PNAC programme, the current President opposed the intervention in Iraq.

They claim that they are hard done by because they don’t get paid enough for
legal aid cases.

One even claims that he doesn’t take appeal cases because they do not pay enough.
(This flea claims he cannot remember saying that and challenges me to give him
chapter and verse of when he posted that so he can check the ‘context’ FFS)

One lawyer ( not a poster here ) Charl Hirschfeld, pocketed 3.1 million dollars in
legal aid fees in 2010.

Charl made submissions on behalf of Davina Murray in the recent case where she was
convicted of supplying the love of her life, rapist and murderer Liam Reid with contraband.
Convicted despite the help of struck off and bankrupt lawyer Barry Hart
Birds of a feather and all that.

The Ministry of Primary Industries has revealed the bacteria discovered in Fonterra products earlier this month was never capable of causing botulism.

Fresh tests show the bacteria discovered was not clostridium botulinum, but clostridium sporogenes which can cause food to spoil. Clostridium sporogenes is not considered a food safety risk.

“When MPI received information from Fonterra on 2 August that it had detected clostridium botulinum in some of its products, I immediately adopted a precautionary approach to protect consumers both here and overseas,” MPI acting director-general Scott Gallacher said today.

The media has much to answer for in their reporting on Syria. It’s all one sided: eg, it’s the fault of the Syrian regime.
No mention of the stories or reports (some coming from U.N inspectors) that the rebels have chemical weapons.
As posted earlier in the thread, even one of the former rebels tweeted that he knows they had chemicals.

If there is a war (or God forbid, a world war) the media will be partly to blame. It’s their job to investigate and tell it like it is, not parrot things they have heard from Obama and co.

The news story is the American red line – they would intervene if the regime used chemical weapons.

The international issue is whether the UN can act multi-laterally to provide an alternative option to the US acting alone.

US – a missile strike against known regime chemical weapons locations
UN – call for Syria and the rebels to hand over their chemical weapons.

Finally… thank you Colville. That could be paying the wages of senior lawyers, junior lawyers, secretaries, PAs, disbursements, rent, insurance, office expenses and god knows what else. Running a law firm is ridiculously expensive and hourly rates in no way equate to an “in the hand” amount. And it doesn’t for any profession.

Nice financial nous shown there however beryl. Would you say Mediaworks is a corporate cash cow because it turns over $500m?

That is untrue. I have never, ever, declined to take an appeal because the client was legally aided. I have bitched about it privately, but I have never, ever refused to take the case.

If you are going to attack Nick and myself, please try sticking to the truth.

And, as Nick pointed out, your attacks on him are completely unfair because he has never done legally aided work.

Gee, you are dense, beryl. Nick doesn’t get paid $500 an hour as a lawyer (and if he does, then I want his job!). That might be the rate that his employer charges for his services as a lawyer, but it won’t be what he is getting paid.

There is a very large difference between the charge-out rate of any lawyer and what their actual salary is.

Not all of them, at least on Criminal Legal Aid, although a fair few are told that they are supposed to. I think that there is more of that with Family, but I have never done Family Legal Aid so I am not the one to ask. If GPT happens along then he would be one to know as he does Family stuff.

Pancakes– easy and delicious-

I added golden syrup, lemon juice and butter on top…. oh yeah!!

I’ve been waiting for the right time and mood to try making pancakes since my baking renaissance… and just as I suspected… perfect pancakes with lemon being squeezed onto them made me jump up and down like a very happy excited little child.

I’ve got some childhood memories of pancakes not being that great. Not these puppies. They are made out of love and comfort. Must be what walking into the light feels like. Ok.. maybe not that good.
