Politicians have to be able to listen to all views, but then need to make firm decisions and hold firm to them despite opposition.

My views are along the lines of Redbaiter at 3:16 pm but a more moderate version. And I’ll say what I think tonight.

Dunedin has apparently spent $40 m on cycleways, most of which are underused. But at a recent transport strategy meeting it was proposed that the goal for walking, cycling and bussing be increased to 50%.

I’m not kidding about partly agreeing with RB. My views aren’t as extreme but I support offshore drilling as long as reasonable safeguards are in place. In Dunedin we don’t get to choose if they drill or not, but we can choose to compete for related business.

I support the right of people to use their cars and not have to slow down and have streets shut for a handful of cyclists,

A large proportion of rentals in Dunedin are students through the University and they already have a flat rating system – if landlords achieve a higher rating they can get a higher rent. I don’t agree with the mayor’s (Green) policy of enforced warrant of fitnesses. People who don’t like the condition of their flats can find something better.

I like UglyTruth’s trash idea, the students in particular can be messy – often a lot of broken glass in the weekend.

Currently commuting cycleways are exceeding supply due to ideological pressures, and they rushed crammed cycle lanes on the busiest streets inches from heavy traffic with no barriers. Nuts. Need less, far better and safe, and let cycle use grow if it will.

They can’t force people out of their cars as much as some would like. Need to cater for cars and gradually for cycles if that grows of it’s own accord.

On student accommodation, please point out to those who claim that something must be done about the “shocking rents” that most of the students will be receiving an accommodation allowance anyway, courtesy of taxpayers. Whatever the answer is, it’s definitely not more of other people’s money.

Debate about the regulation of public spaces is always going to suffer from assumptions about the nature of public rights and the role of local councils. Beating the assumptions is half the battle.

Someone at work made the comment awhile ago lots of teens don’t even know how to use a pen. So then I read about this:

However, MLK was an amazing speaker who exuded charisma and intelligence. He may have been Christian and have connections to the left, but I can see he meant well and had sincerity. He also had some good ideas. America could benefit from having someone like him alive today to tap them on the shoulder and speak to their conscience.

But in my 8.42 I was more referring to the way the US government has lost any scruples about lying to & manipulating the electorate. The executive has assumed powers not that far removed from those enjoyed by dictators. The democratic vote is seen as something to keep the peasants amused while the country is ruined financially & dragged into all sorts of global confrontations at the behest of the corporate gods.

It worries me as a Kiwi….if I was an American I’d be marching in the street with a pitchfork.

Much of US history is the story of popular movements unable to overcome the conservatism entrenched by the constitution. I’m thinking of such things as the Whiskey Rebellion, the civil war draft riots, the failure of reconstruction, the progressive movement pre WWI, the Supreme Court vs the New Deal, etc, etc.

Those who drafted the Constitution represented the educated & financially successful who had nothing to gain from rapid change. Other than a few souls motivated by morals & religion, poor conservatives are not the norm.

The system is not totally without merit but if a business was so resistant to change it would fail.

LRC, I was going to start going to the gym and doing squats for running and general fitness. Then I found out about a body weight exercise called the Pistol Squat. It requires advanced core strength, flexibility, balance and leg strength. My goal is to do one by Christmas time. I am not exactly a physical wreck and can not do even one proper Pistol Squat. I have seen it done on youtube and it looks easy… until you try it. It is a very humbling exercise.

I don’t even like forward leg lunges with dumbbells. Don’t do them. How’s the foot? Gyms are good but I find them depressing overall. I like lifting weights at home in my undies if I want to. Have you got a membership?

kea – had a quick go at pistol squat. To get right to the floor and back up – that would take some practice. Just for fun I cheated, took it right down – and on the way back up some fuckin high up inside left leg muscle started screaming… hahahahahahaha… oooooooorrrrrrr… I don’t think so. Balance was ok though. Why? Probably from my running and dancing. And lifting.

LRC, every single article and vid I have listen to reinforced the same thing. DO NOT rush into it. (as you did).

You must have your leg out straight in front and your bent knee can not extend over your toes 🙂

I prefer to stay away from gyms too. That is why I love the challenge of this, along with it being a huge test of flexibility, balance and strength. It is a better test of overall fitness. The foot is ok and learning to do this exercise will help it. I ran on it sore a couple of days ago and it is feeling better for it.

yeah yeah… don’t rush. I wasn’t trying for a gold medal… just a quick go. I’m not so fuckin thick that I’d try to pull it off first crack… that would be mental. I thought it would be an interesting measure of my balance; and to compare left foot to bad right foot.

My bad right foot has been on the quiet side for ages. It’s truck driving that seems to kill it off in nothing flat… then I’m limping. But running, dancing, lifting.. punching the bag it doesn’t like so much.

You might like the dude I found scoobysworkshop.com I’ve suggested the link before. No bullshit kind of bloke. Hardcore but human.
