So two and a half years later it has yet to be contained. There is no reason to believe that it will be contained even by 2020. What’s more, there’s likelihood of a potentially more catastrophic happening in Fukushima. If there was another large earthquake, if there was a large typhoon there could easily be more destruction there. As we know there is a spent fuel pool in the number 4 reactor that holds an immense amount of spent nuclear fuel rods and the building has been damaged and is leaning. This spent fuel pool is several floors up, so if this building were to collapse which could happen it would spill these spent nuclear fuel rods all over the ground which would make the 2020 Tokyo Olympics impossible and could threaten all kinds of health problems throughout northern Japan and Tokyo itself. So it’s a wish that Tokyo Olympics will not be affected by this, but there’s no doubt that the radioactive leakage will be continuing at that time.

Prime Minister John Key has confirmed three Chinese warships will arrive in Auckland tomorrow on a friendship visit.

They are a destroyer, a frigate and an oiler.

Key said they had followed the requirements of the nuclear free law and they had given him the information he needed to approve the visit.

China had said the ships were not nuclear powered and carried no nuclear weapons.

Key said he welcomed foreign ship visits as long as they met the requirements of New Zealand’s law.

Again Judith Collins seems prepared to keep a very tight reign on Justice in this country.

As long as any politician is responsible for deciding whether Justice will prevail, the system is open to corruption.

As Minister of Justice, she gets to decide whether an application for Royal Prerogative of Mercy will proceed. She gets to conduct the investigation, if any, and as we have seen, her sources of information are from the Police and Crown Prosecutors – which of course are going to return only one answer, and not always a well balanced and honest one.

This Minister knows nothing about the true meaning of Justice, if she did Teina Pora would not still be in prison. Regardless of his application to the Privy Council, there is room within the law for him to have been released on parole in the meantime.

There have been fair too many cases of wrongful conviction in this country, which is meant to be a civilised one. It is time to establish an independent body that is not vulnerable to the perversion of politics, nor other parties involved, and is able to consider each case in a rational and fair manner. NZ needs a CCRC sooner rather than later. When the only safeguards we have are reliant on Ms Collins, then we are all in deep trouble.

Rivers are disappearing in China. Building canals is not the solution

Unlike some of China’s recent infrastructure extravagances, the diversion project addresses a serious problem. China is dangerously short of water. While the south is a lush, lake-filled region, the north—which has half the population and most of the farmland—is more like a desert. The international definition of water stress is 1,000 cubic metres of usable water per person per year. The average northern Chinese has less than a fifth of that amount. China has 20% of the world’s population but only 7% of its fresh water. A former prime minister, Wen Jiabao, once said water shortages threaten “the very survival of the Chinese nation”.

The shortage is worsening because China’s water is disappearing. In the 1950s the country had 50,000 rivers with catchment areas of 100 square kilometres or more. Now the number is down to 23,000. China has lost 27,000 rivers, mostly as a result of over-exploitation by farms or factories.

Water shortages impose big costs. China is hoping for a shale-gas revolution but does not have enough water for it since most of the gas reserves are in the driest parts of the country. The World Bank puts the cost of China’s water problems—mostly damage to health—at 2.3% of a year’s GDP.

I do wonder to what extent some aspects of this bill that appear to be really designed to placate non-custodial parents have been influenced by the very vocal and grumpy fathers groups out there on the fringes. I think they are epitomised by the notorious self-styled dad4justice in the blogosphere, whom members may be familiar with. These are the fathers who view their children effectively as their chattels, and they have made it very clear through their actions that their motivations are not what is in the best interest of their children but their own self-perceived rights, including the minimising of their child support obligations.

What difference does it make? Progressivism or Conservatism- the schism that is dividing the west.

There is a great divide in America. On one side, you have liberalism, voiced by a group of progressive Democrats that believe in greater government control of almost every aspect of our daily lives. On the other, there is conservatism.

More and more, conservatism is being voiced by the people who lean more to the libertarian side of the political spectrum. Many of us want nothing more than to be simply left alone. We do not desire the government to be in our homes or in our lives and we see much of the federal government as an unneeded and unwanted intrusion into our personal lives.

The differences between the two sides of this divide could be no greater. My question is this. To borrow the words from Hillary Clinton, what difference does it make, as long as we are all still Americans? My answer to that question may also be simple, but I would contend that it makes a great deal of difference in the direction America is going.

After over 30 years, or so, I have just finally cancelled the Auckland Herald for good.
I was asked by the former overseas gentleman at the paper what was my reason.
I said what choices do you have on your list, because I doubt that you would find my reason as it would not suit your editors and owners.

Now I have no newspapers and will have to get used to it. I might glance at one usually in my coffee shop.
Sadly their social and political prejudice, along with “Ambrose UTU”, and incompetent repeaters, is only worthy of social and economic sabotage to this country, in the name of market share.

What a sad indictment of our world, envied by many, many other countries as to our life style.

Not shared by the so called media.

Re the new Maori names for the main islands and Longknives at 8.05:

If the TV weather yap-yap man Jim and his colleagues describe the South Island as Te Wai Pounamu they should give its full true title: Te Wai Pounamu, Ngai Tahu Take Paringa ( Ngai Tahu Tax Haven).

Seriously, the Maori names won’t supplant the English ones. Stewart Island has long had an alternative Maori name, Rakiura, for glowing skies, a rather nice name, easily pronounced by non-Maori speakers, but it has never come close to supplanting the name from the old Captain Stewart from sealing days.

If that is a dig at me, forget it. Judith Collins is not the only person in the world called Judith. I wouldn’t name a goldfish after her, let alone myself. As for being part of Penny’s Cabinet. I don’t like her politics, or in fact many current politicians politics, so as far as even voting for any of them, I’m struggling to find any I consider worthy. As far as being a politician – no thanks, I prefer my colleagues to be people I can stand sharing a tearoom with.

Home ownership rates are falling; some people have 1000 houses. What’s more asset inflation isn’t wealth creation it just creates a hole that has to be filled. The landlords didn’t get their picking strawberries (Jone’s on property) etc.

In other countries there would be calls for boycotts. In fact there’s probably a case for cancelling this election and starting again.

We’re always being patronised with the cliché that “if you don’t vote you can’t complain”. That’s never made sense, but for this current dysfunctional election, it’s perhaps more the case that “if you do choose to vote, then you’re complicit in propping up this broken system”.

I did the same with my sub to the Dom Post recently. The follow up was interesting. Firstly I got a letter from the editor asking if I could give the reasons for cancellation –the reply to go to her own email address at the Dom Post. I sent in a reply ( including giving her credit for taking the time and effort to find out why I cancelled). My reasons included low journalistic standards , not being politically balanced , value for money etc. I also mentioned we probably would continue to buy the Saturday paper. She replied thanking me for the response.
About three weeks later I got a call asking if I wanted to get the Sat. paper delivered. I declined and was immediately offered it for half price. Then about two weeks later I got a letter offering a new subscription rate for 6 days delivery/ week which amounted to a 35% discount on our last monthly account. My wife mentioned all this at her place of work one day –the two people sitting next to her said they had cancelled their paper recently as well. I think Fairfax and co. are under “the blow torch”

I think Clayton Cosgrove is an asset to National. According to Clayton nothing National does is right. Everything is criticised. However the general public knows National is not always wrong. Equally they know Labour in power won’t always have the best answers to problems. I think Labour do themselves more favours by occasionally publicly agreeing with National. It makes them seem more reasonable.

Most fell on the land in the BC mountains. It is now washing into the sea.
That is why Harper and Obama killed all radiation testing programs.
The wave, arriving in the next year or 2 will just make it worse.

On a happy note you can still find 2010 west coast wines. Grab a bottle or 6. Once they are gone you’ll need to switch to the Southern Hemisphere

One way to force the system admit the fraudulent nature of its judicial process involves asserting full legal status rather than accepting the assumption of diminished status as usually occurs. Full status is applicable to men, but persons have reduced status. In NZ courts the determination of status is a matter of law, not a matter of fact, which means that police witnesses cannot be cross-examined about the legal status of the defendant. The remedy can be applied by impeaching the police witness.

In practice this only works for a police constable, a police sergeant has rank (i.e. status) and can testify against a man. It can be done by asking the constable if he or she recognises the accused as a man or as a person. If they indicate a person, then ask them if that determination is a matter of law or a matter of fact, and you have them on the horns of a dilemma. If they indicate fact, then they have impeached themselves if they bring the matter to court where it is treated as a matter of law, and if the indicate law they have impeached themselves because of prejudice arising from their interest in assuming jurisdiction.

That is the perennial dilemma for an opposition party. The constiutional role of the opposition is to oppose, in the manner of a formal debate, which is how Parliament operates. At the same time, there are many areas of broad agreement between the major parties, which both are always reluctant to acknowledge lest they be seen as agreeing with their sworn opponents.

Interesting letter from the editor of the Los Angeles Times this morning explaining why his newspaper is no longer going to publish Letters to The Editor that confront the claimed “climate change consensus”.

A straight out admission that the LA Times is not interested in reporting objectively but sees its mission as to crusade for Progressive causes.

Global Warming is only one issue that the media pursue. There are many others that are also promoted as part of their commitment to liberal advocacy rather than objective reporting.

So why would anyone interested in learning a broad range of facts and or opinions on climate change or any issue read the LA Times or any Progressive newspaper? Like the NZ Herald or the Dominion Post in NZ?

The answer is they wouldn’t. These papers are only useful if you want to know what Progressives are thinking. Any other view is not permitted.

And they wonder why they’re going out of business.

Australia has a much more open society, in that there is plenty of anti-left opinion to be sourced. Radio stations, newspapers and television stations have contributors who are really anti-left, whereas in NZ the opposition is practically non existent.

You have the odd resister like Leighton Smith but he is so neutered as to be almost ineffective, and most other perceived right wing commenters are much the same. Timid milksops.

So there is that difference. NZ is basically wall to wall communism. (Cuba) Australia is much more politically pluralistic.

Catholic doctor in Australia may be struck off for refusing to abort baby girl after the parents said they wanted a boy instead.
The baby was at 19 weeks.

A Catholic doctor who refused to sanction a sex-selective abortion is fighting for his career after a complaint was made against him.

Dr Mark Hobart could be struck off Australia’s medical register for declining to arrange an abortion of a healthy girl because her parents wanted a boy instead.
He was asked for an abortion by an Indian couple who wanted to a boy but the mother was 19 weeks pregnant with a girl.

But he would not accede to their demands because the pregnancy was at an “advanced stage” and because he saw no medical necessity for it.

He also refused to refer the woman and her husband to a second doctor who would arrange the procedure.
The couple found another doctor and went ahead with the abortion a few days later.

An investigation was launched into the conduct of Dr Hobart after he publicly discussed his case and members of the Medical Board of Victoria complained about him.
The Victoria Abortion Reform Act 2008 allows conscientious objection only if doctors will find other medics to arrange abortions instead.

The Melbourne-based medic is being investigated by the Medical Board of Australia and also by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – the Australian equivalent of the General Medical Council – and he could lose his licence to practise medicine anywhere in the country.

Moody’s credit-rating agency says the talk by Obama of defaulting on the debt is yet more fearmongering and won’t happen.

Moody’s offers different view on debt limit

One of the nation’s top credit-rating agencies says that the U.S. Treasury Department is likely to continue paying interest on the government’s debt even if Congress fails to lift the limit on borrowing next week, preserving the nation’s sterling AAA credit rating.

In a memo being circulated on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Moody’s Investors Service offers “answers to frequently asked questions” about the government shutdown, now in its second week, and the federal debt limit. President Obama has said that, unless Congress acts to raise the $16.7 trillion limit by next Thursday, the nation will be at risk of default.

Not so, Moody’s says in the memo dated Oct. 7.

” We believe the government would continue to pay interest and principal on its debt even in the event that the debt limit is not raised, leaving its creditworthiness intact,” the memo says. “The debt limit restricts government expenditures to the amount of its incoming revenues; it does not prohibit the government from servicing its debt. There is no direct connection between the debt limit (actually the exhaustion of the Treasury’s extraordinary measures to raise funds) and a default.

The memo offers a starkly different view of the consequences of congressional inaction on the debt limit than is held by the White House, many policymakers and other financial analysts. During a press conference at the White House Tuesday, Obama said missing the Oct. 17 deadline would invite “economic chaos.”

The Moody’s memo goes on to argue that the situation is actually much less serious than in 2011, when the nation last faced a pitched battle over the debt limit.

“The budget deficit was considerably larger in 2011 than it is currently, so the magnitude of the necessary spending cuts needed after 17 October is lower now than it was then,” the memo says.

Treasury Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Court does not tolerate challenges to sovereignty. They are well used to these challenges and they never get anywhere. Claims to the contrary are bullshit.

Before the whole “Freeman” thing, there were challenges by Maori. NZ Judges are well versed in this.

Looks like the Islamists are staging dry-runs for another 9/11 style airplane attack.

A memo obtained by the WTSP investigators from the union that represents pilots for US Airways says that “there have been several cases recently throughout the (airline) industry of what appear to be probes, or dry-runs, to test our procedures and reaction to an in flight threat.”

Koch says, “What most security experts will tell you that if a dry-run is occurring, the attack will shortly follow.”

The pilots say the most recent dry-run occurred on Flight 1880 on September 2. The flight left Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. and headed to Orlando International.
Crew members say that shortly after takeoff, a group of four “Middle Eastern” men caused a commotion.

The witnesses claim one of the men ran from his seat in coach, toward the flight deck door. He made a hard left and entered the forward bathroom “for a considerable length of time.”

While he was in there, the other three men proceeded to move about the cabin, changing seats, opening overhead bins, and “generally making a scene.” They appeared to be trying to occupy and distract the flight attendants.

The WTSP Investigators contacted both US Airways and the Transportation Security Administration both confirmed the incident. US Airways says it won’t discuss the details of security measures, but that it works closely with authorities.

The TSA told us it takes all reports of suspicious activity aboard aircraft seriously, and the matter requires no further investigation at this time.

However, a current Federal Air Marshal who works flights every week says of the TSA, “They’re liars. They’re flat out liars.”

The Air Marshal, whose identity we are not revealing because agency rules prohibit him from talking to the media, says the TSA doesn’t want the flying public to be aware of the problems with terrorist probes.

The Air Marshal and others we have spoken to say several flights they have worked were targets of dry-runs and that most of his colleagues believe no matter what the TSA says, the incident aboard Flight 1880 is serious.

Judge Fogarty seems to have got his judgements somewhat askewed. In one case he makes an empty threat to give a serial child killer life without parole before actually sentencing him so as to allow him to continue his activities in middle age, a case of not enuff. In the other he charges a cabinet minister with not wasting enough time arguing pointlessly with Teachers Unions. No wonder our Justice system is amiss.

Never ending welfare
High taxation. yes it is high. 34% plus 15% plus rates, plus fuel charges, plus plus plus. a lot of indirect taxataion, but its there.
ETS – ffs. what a worthless piece of legislation.

those are the things that bug me the most.

And that is with a “right wing government”. wait til we have a green/labour/dung/mana/maori government.
