Thanks for those that answered my question about 500.

I interviewed a retired teacher recently, who was talking about how games like 500 taught children a lot of skills that computer games cannot replicate. She is advocating parents sit and teach their children 500, if they want to improve their grades.

I used to play Euchre with my Dad and Grandparent’s too, but haven’t for years. I don’t think I know anyone that does.

500 and Euchre – is a teaching game. The games teach you to communicate without saying a word.
Watch for the left ear rubbing, the both hands on the table, the rubbing of arms or rollong a sleeve up, scratching the chin.
The most blatant would be laying the right arm across the chest to the left shoulder (hearts), and stamping the floor (saying you have cramp) spades.

We used to play 500 at lunchtimes in the smoko shed at work & often on wet Saturday arvos at the pub but that would be over thirty years ago.

Come to think about it, people don’t seem to play any card games nowadays.

I learnt that the hard way…….when I was an apprentice we used to play it at work to divide up all the shit jobs. Took me about 3 days till I worked out I was being fucked over.

You wouldn’t mention strip poker in that particular part of the workforce either. We were truck drivers & then fertiliser came in hundred weight bags, bobby calves were lifted onto trucks & hay was manhandled into sheds.

Anything that could be construed as a trifle queer would have meant lights out. 🙂

I remember loading hay as a kid in the SI during christmas holidays, the men threw the bales onto the truck and the kids stacked them – till just under the hights of power lines!!!!!
Then we all sat on the top of the ‘very safe load’ while we took them down the road to the hayshed!!!

That was in a place called Matara Island in Southland as we used to hoilday there at Christmas time, looking back the local copper was also involved – and the men started drinking with about two loads to go – the police were good back then – community spirited! 😎

Fond memories.

I understand what this person was saying. A game of 500 involved lots of positive things – the need to be vigilant, strategic, work with a team (partner), maths, plus the social skills involved – patience, sharing, co-operation and probably heaps more. There are probably very few things that people do face to face that gives the same experience these days.

Feelgood story about recently deceased Fast and Furious star Paul Walker and his charitable act toward a veteran and his fiance.

Paul Walker was best known for his action-packed films, but many are remembering the late actor, who died on Saturday in a fiery car crash, as a big softie with a huge heart.

During the holiday season several years ago, the “Fast & Furious” actor walked into Bailey Banks and Biddle Jewelers in Santa Barbara, California, and, according to sales associate Irene King, what happened next was practically out of a feel-good Hollywood movie.
King told CBS Los Angeles that an associate nudged her and said, “There’s Paul Walker.”

“Oh, OK, yeah,” King replied with a smile. “I said, ‘Yeah, he’s a nice-looking man.’”

Walker was browsing for bling at the same time as a soldier who had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq, and was looking at engagement rings with his fiancée.

Paul Walker was just a genuine guy.

According to King, the pair saw a ring set they liked, but it was way too expensive and boasted a hefty $10,000 price tag.

In comes Walker. The blue-eyed actor called the store’s manager and told him to put the ring that the couple was looking at “on his tab,” but to keep his identity hidden. He promptly walked out of the store. According to King, the store never told the couple that Walker was the man behind the purchase, and nobody ever knew the sweet story until now.

Jack5, yes true. If China or Japan call in the debt there will be global financial collapse. That will not benefit anyone.

The US has the benefit of printing the worlds reserve currency. Many Middle Eastern countries that have toyed with the idea of selling their oil in other currencies have suddenly found themselves invaded, because they have terrorists or because of the way their women dress.

Railway wagons of bloody cement bags loaded onto the truck at the railhead by hand, bag by bloody bag, 100CWT bags of grain folding in half as you picked the bastards up and the back load would be bloody wall boards or particle board which slid sideways and broke the ropes (no chains, they might flip the truck 🙁 ) on damned near every corner you went round (in first, low).

Things were easy as hell back in the day eh?

Just imagine what a game of 500 or euchre would be like now, with everyone texting or tweeting away through he game. Maybe that’s why younger people don’t play cards, it doesn’t work with their lifestyle.

There’s even a machine that can tell you who your parents are with a single drop of spit. However, when I need my prostate checked a man sticks his finger up my arsehole and wriggles it about a bit.

Most wool bales rolled and stacked easy (knees my friend, knees) , it was the bloody muddy bellies, half filled that wouldn’t stack and were a bastard to get organised on the truck. I hated cruching season!

Hardly!

Japan won’t as the US subsidises Japan’s defence!

China won’t either as there is nothing to gain from collapsing the worlds economies when 300,000,000+ Chinese are directly employed in export based activity or have jobs ‘down stream’ from it.

Educate yourself Jack, because that’s how it works. Did you know that the following countries are the only ones don’t have a central reserve fractional banking system: Iran, Cuba, North Korea. The list used to include Libya but they set one up there even before the bullets stopped flying. It was the provisional governments very first action. Isn’t that interesting.

Harriet have you been following the US’ China containment policy? Their latest move was into the Phillipines a month ago. I suggest if you want to predict future events you start with the realisation we are not living in normal times and other forces are operating that go far beyond mere international trade.

And as Kea pointed out, the reserve currency status is critical to the US economy and that’s currently under massive threat due to pressure from the BRICS alliance – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. You see, for some unknown reason the Chinese are really pissed off the QE policy Obama’s been following has been inflating away their 1.5 trillion T-Bill holdings. Gee. Who’da thunk.

Harriet, that was pretty much my point. But it wont stay that way forever. America is not great.

I like Americans, but they lost my sympathy when they voted Obama in for a second term, knowing full well he was a fake. Same as I lost regard for kiwis when they voted the hideous Klarken beast in three times. I voted for it the first time myself, stupidly thinking she was returning to the days when Labour looked after the working man. I fucked that one up royally.

Reid, it is an amazing coincidence that countries who want to tinker with currency are suddenly found to have “human rights violations”, which can only be remedied by bombs, tanks, drones and guns ? Along with sanctions and blockades.

Remarkably, leveling cities and killing everyone actually improves their standard of living and liberty !

Russia is talking big about diversifying from US currency holdings, but travellers report that in the vast Russian hinterland it’s mostly impossible to pay with a Western credit card or anything else but US dollar notes, preferably freshly printed.

Brazil and India’s economies have paused for a cup of coffee/tea and South Africa isn’t going very well.

For China to be a reserve currency, the yuan will have to be fully convertible. How the communist hierarchy will cope with that will be interesting.

The spectre is looming of a second Syrian civil war with the head of the opposition’s official forces declaring that he is prepared to join regime troops in the future to drive out al-Qa’ida-linked extremists who have taken over swathes of rebel-held territories.

General Salim Idris, the commander of the Free Syrian Army warned that in particular Isis (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham), with thousands of foreign fighters in its ranks, was “very dangerous for the future of Syria” and needs to be confronted before it becomes even more powerful.

I could not believe it. But, this is what the dopey person says………

Real Estate Institute chief executive Helen O’Sullivan said it was true house prices outside Auckland and Christchurch were “a very different picture”. But her data were not as dramatic as Barnett’s, which were adjusted.

Without adjusting for inflation, her figures showed the national median house prices, excluding Auckland, were 5.4 per cent above the market peak.
