Hi…. I enjoyed your thoughtful and perceptive post at 10.35am….

But I demur over “…. Some of the criticism of JK of recent over WO is reported to have come from business concerns – hardly a bastion of the left…..”

If I remember correctly, that came from the O’Sullivan/Armstrong/Vance team last Saturday. They seem to have been interviewing their laptops, such was the fiction emanating therefrom. Those were not their first efforts designed to support the Herald/Fairfax anti J Key editorial policies.

I was at a function in Wellington late last week attended by many business leaders. The social conversation was illuminating. Most, and I include the CEOs of at least three large corporates, believe the whole affair is media driven nonsense, and “much a do about nothing.”

The alternatives to Key? None worth supporting. Yes they “know” Little, but they also know and distrust those to whom he is beholden. Moreover, they test and read the public pulse better, and with greater professionalism, than the likes of O’Sullivan. They seem to have ignored the rubbish written by O’Sullivan, Vance and Armstrong et al.

One CEO remarked to me that if he got through as much work in a day as J Key, let alone the multiplicity of tasks and subjects, he would be on his death bed. Another pointedly observed that the whole thing (Little/Goff/NZSIS/Media circus) was an attempt to re-write the election. None had a cross word to say about Key. I offered the observation to one that I thought Key should adopt the John Howard approach: “As Prime Minister I alone will determine with whom I make contact, when, and how”. The response was enthusiastic. One actually said something really quite salty. 🙂

National in for a torrid week as Labour and the Greens will get stuck in to JK over his texting or not to Cameron Slater. Andrew Little does not appear to understand that the general election is over and people were not interested in who said what to who etc. Little seems to think that as he won the so called labour leader contest he knows how to get rid of this awful National led government. If you want something that will knock the confidence out of a government come up with a scandal. An extramarital affair of a top minister or a local body leader. Remember the British scandal when John Profumo had an affair with Christine Keiller. Goodbye Harold McMillan. Nothing like this on the horizon for Labour so they, along with Norman, will drone on and on about Slater, Key, and reports ad nauseum. Give us a break!

Wait until we see what he produces from all this talk.

Will he be all hot air like Helen Clark (nz to catch up to Aussie incomes, nz to be the first sustainable green economy etc etc)?

I was self employed during the helen clark years and every policy she bought out screwed me. So, will the leopard change it’s spots?

This AM on the radio the PM justifies radical changes to the law and our ancient rights .He says it is his duty to protect New Zealanders from a growing threat .

OK ,so why allow more and more of the growing threat to migrate to New Zealand?

errrr …… small technical point ‘Sponge’ (alias IDIOT?) is that, strangely enough, my Auckland Council Rates Assessment Notices and Rates Invoices are generically identical to all other Auckland Council ratepayers.

So – if MY Rates Assessment Notices do not comply with the mandatory statutory requirements of s.45 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 – then neither will YOURS (presuming you are an Auckland Council ratepayer?)

The term ‘IDIOT’ being used in a caring way – as you do when you’re dealing with IDIOTS?

But now – the spin via the likes of Mischele Boag – is the supposed threat of terrorist attacks HERE in New Zealand during the Cricket World Cup?

errrr……where in the above-mentioned Regulatory Impact Statement is ANY mention made of possible terrorist risks associated with the Cricket World Cup?

Smells like BULLSH*T to me …..

Just an excuse to extend the powers of the SIS to spy on New Zealanders – when it’s been proven that the SIS (and GCSB) cannot be trusted to follow the LAW and their ‘watchdogs’ are effectively, in my opinion, toothless gummy lapdogs?

yeah milky ,parliament is attacking ancient freedoms because of Catholic immigration.

If the relatively recent presence of 50 000 Muslims in New Zealand means we need new laws to monitor and control terrorism then that relatively small minority are a disproportionate danger .

As opposed to Catholics who have been here in big numbers from the very foundation of the nation.

Um, Penny… Did you notice that a lone Muslim fkwit got into the Canadian Parliament and started shooting? And it was only the presence of mind of the ceremonial sergeant-at-arms that prevented a tragedy.

If you believe “nothing bad could ever happen here” is an argument for ANYTHING then you are living in a fool’s paradise.

[Dare I say it – much like about half of 2010 New Zealand, pre- Pike River Mine Disaster, Pre Christchurch earthquake, pre- Fox Glacier skydive crash. ]

Re John Banks.
First of all I have always quite liked John Banks and I don’t really care one way or the other about those donations. But I do think we should all wait and see if Dotcom can somehow prove that the meeting he says those donations were discussed at is not the same meeting those two American’s were at.
Just having a problem believing John Banks didn’t know about them. Incidentally I would be quite pleased to see the back of Dotcom.

While it certainly not in any way “terrorism”, you will recall that in the months leading up to the Rugby World Cup certain individuals such as Titewhai Harawira were quoted as calling the Rugby World Cup a “grand opportunity” to air their grievances and make a political statement, with Titewhai Harawira saying she was determined to expose the treatment of Maori to foreign media.

I was glad nothing transpired and embarrassed us on the world stage, but I wondered why. Was it because Titewhai Harawira lost her nerve (unlikely) or was it because she was being watched (in the loosest sense of the word) and knew it?

‘… Ms Gwyn was at Parliament this morning to speak to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee about the Countering Terrorist Fighters Legislation Bill.

Ms Gwyn would not comment on the evidence she gave to the committee, but said she had not said anything she would not say publicly. SIS head Rebecca Kitteridge was also back before the committee today.

In an unusual decision, committee chair Mark Mitchell allowed the media to remain in the room for Ms Gwyn’s evidence on the grounds it was not reported until after the Bill was reported back to the House. Most media decided not to stay.

Dotcom remains on bail

A United States government attempt to put Kim Dotcom back behind bars has failed.

The US had sought to have Dotcom’s bail revoked ahead of an extradition hearing, saying there was a greater risk he would try to flee the country given he has earned millions of dollars since being freed in February 2012.

But Judge Nevin Dawson backed Dotcom, who argued he had never breached his bail conditions, after a three-day hearing in Auckland District Court.

Dotcom is wanted in the United States on internet piracy charges.

Kim Dotcom has avoided jail time and faces only a slight tightening of his bail conditions following a bail hearing at Auckland District Court today.

The Crown claimed Mr Dotcom breached his bail conditions by having indirect contact with one of his accused; that he’s a flight risk because he has the money to skip the country and that he has been dishonest about his finances by trying to sell a Rolls Royce in London.

The judge decided no jail time and no electronic monitoring would be imposed. The judge’s justification for a slight tightening of his bail conditions was that Mr Dotcom is approaching an extradition hearing date.

Mr Dotcom was quick to tweet: “BREAKING NEWS: Court rules that I’m free to go home. Justice is alive in Auckland. Not so sure about Wellington.”

At a preliminary hearing last month, Judge Nevin Dawson imposed extra bail conditions on the 40-year-old internet tycoon, restricting his movements to within 80 kilometres of his Coatesville mansion and banning him from travel in a boat or helicopter.

After a court appearance this morning, Mr Dotcom posted a flurry of tweets, taking aim at the Prime Minister, the US government and the Crown.

He bragged about the wealth he has amassed while on bail.

Fun Fact: I’ve created more wealth while on bail (restarting from zero in 2012) than John Key during his entire professional career 😉

Kim Dotcom (@KimDotcom)November 30, 2014 Mr Dotcom’s lawyer assured the court this morning that his client would not leave New Zealand.

Ron Mansfield said Mr Dotcom “has funds, he’s still here, and there is no intention to flee our jurisdiction”.

Prior to the hearing, Mr Dotcom told ONE News he was feeling confident that he’d be going home today.

Penny regards white-collar criminals as scum of the earth who should be in jail. Banks has no criminal convictions (although I seem to recall that he did have his cell phone on in an aeroplane once). Kim has extensive criminal convictions going way back. They involve insider trading, fraud et cetera. He is facing even more serious criminal charges. Yet somehow, despite the fact that he fits neatly within Penny’s “scum of the earth” definition, he is blessed with a halo of verisimilitude and is for ever blessed

I don’t agree with everything that Kim Dotcom has ever said or done – but I think was being stitched up in this attempt to jail him, on what appears to have been a fabricated ‘flight risk’ allegation, for which there appears to have been no evidence.

Unlike so many Kiwibloggers – I work on an ‘issue by issue’ basis.

Some of you folks want to try it some time?

The old ‘left’ vs ‘right’ thing, in my view, went out with Rogernomic$, when it was a Labour Government which introduced this neo-liberal agenda for which there was no public mandate, and was forced upon us through a legislative blitzkreig which was railroaded through politically at blinding speed.

In my view – it’s now simply public vs corporates and those who serve their interests.

You see – on some issues – we will agree, on others we won’t.

You are entitled to your view, as I am mine.

But you don’t have to get all personal and nasty just because someone holds a view which is different to yours?

It’s called ‘freedom of expression’.

Not really very complicated?

Wow,

27 people gave Waikato singers 8.18 post a green tick wishing John & Bronagh Key a happy wedding anniversary.

I hope everyone who reaches that milestone has a happy anniversary but I’ve never seen such hero like worship of a politician outside of North Korea or Obama supporters in the States.

It is truly jaw dropping – he is just a politician ffs. Most people around the world have a healthy distrust of pollies but in NZ amongst a small portion of sheeple Key is awarded God like status.

The mourning on this blog when he leaves office is going to be something to behold – will the sheep ever find as good a Shepherd to lead the flock?

Penny, with all due respect, you have raised the argument that you shouldn’t have to pay your rates because the Auckland Council are not “complying” with some rules regarding the notice.
I’ll take that then as you supporting..
– all those in State Housing not following to the letter the Conditions regarding maintenance, behaviour, keeping of dogs etc being kicked out?
-all those who don’t keep their WOF & Licensing Fees up to date being liable for the fines imposed?
– all those who do things like free camping in Aotea Square against the rules being summarily removed..

Seems pretty straightforward doesn’t it?

Ex-MP to face suppression charges

A former National MP will be in the court dock tomorrow on charges of breaching suppression for tweeting the name of a prominent man who was convicted of indecent assault but later discharged with permanent name suppression.

The former MP is due to appear before a district court tomorrow morning on charges of knowingly breaching suppression orders under the Criminal Procedure Act.

The offence is punishable by up to 6 months imprisonment or a fine of up to $100,000 to knowingly or recklessly publish a name, address, occupation, or other information in breach of a suppression order.

The former MP tweeted the man’s name last month. The tweet has not been deleted from his feed.

The former MP did not return calls.

Police confirmed the charge had been laid and the former MP would appear in court, but would not comment further.

The man’s case has attracted significant attention. In 2012, he pleaded guilty and was convicted of performing an indecent act for an incident in 2011. He was later discharged without conviction and given permanent name suppression.

The woman at the centre of the case, Louise Helmsley, applied and succeeded in having her own name suppression set aside in October this year. She spoke out about the case, pushing for the man’s suppression to also be lifted.

I was thinking along the lines of the two of us putting in a tender for the exorcism JB (On the appropriate Civil Service form & in triplicate). Don’t know if Baity has a lisp but he communicates so much crap that no one will notice the difference.

We’ll need an auditor for the accounts though…..any ideas of someone local we could trust not to tickle the petty cash tin? 🙂

Since I’ve paid enough tax over the past five decades to support half a dozen solo mothers & the fruit of their loins, employ a few no hopers in Parliament, not to mention providing sufficient koha to appease countless Taniwha I reckon that it’s my turn. 🙂

The Prime Minister is signalling the Government is open to making changes to its foreign fighters legislation.

A Parliamentary Committee is due to report back on the Bill tomorrow.

It’s faced widespread criticism of such measures as extending the powers of the SIS.

John Key says they’re listening to the concerns of submitters and are engaging in good faith with other political parties.

He says they have an open mind and it’s entirely possible changes will be made before the Bill is passed into law.

LESSON: When people come from nowhere, and make a beeline for key organisational roles in helping to ‘make’ the message, or to help get the message out, whose main role seems to be to cause internal fighting within the group (because most people hate in-fighting – it puts them off), then, check them out ….

LOTS of lessons from the Occupy Auckland movement – that was a key one for me…….

Hawke’s Bay Muslim forms own Islamic State

A Hawke’s Bay Muslim man is calling on “souljahs of Allah” to make their way to Hastings and join him in forming the “Islamic State of Aotearoa”.

Te Amorangi Kireka-Whaanga, of Hastings, who heads the Aotearoa Maori Muslim Association, said in a Facebook post yesterday he had changed the organisation’s name to the Islamic State of Aotearoa.

Yesterday on Facebook, where he has 936 friends, he called on “Muslim souljahs, warriors and followers of prophet Muhammad” to make their way to Hastings and “blow everyone away with the beauty and magic of love, truth, wisdom and divine blessings”.

Ah, I see, he wants to earn his Nobel peace prize by making inspirational Facebook posts! I’m not sure that “blow everyone away” is the best turn of phrase though!
