I will bet they were sliding the car around at speed. If a sliding wheel digs in to a soft patch the car will flip
Many years ago I used to fish the far end using a 2wd Toyota corolla wagon. I kept a few fence palings on the roof racks so if I did get stuck in soft sand it was easy to jack the car up put the palings under the wheels and get going again.
I have watched cars get destroyed in the surf of people who had four wheel drive and thought that made them invincible.
Simple rules for driving on a west coast beach.
Stay on the wet sand , keep out of the water, Do your traveling on a falling tide, Always look out for sweepers those big waves can come out of no where . keep your speed down. The west coast beaches have many traps for the unwary like buried cars, soft spots and holes from wave action around large pieces of flotsam, deep ruts from rips etc .Many of these hazards can be hidden by a thin film of water making them invisible until to late .

BWAV, alot of the remnant Ottaman empire was angling for independence throughout the years up to WW1. The Ottomans controlled all the Balkans that Austria Hungary didn’t including Alabania, Serbia, Macedonia etc etc. A series of wars were fought in the area, and oddly enough the Austro-Hungarians weren’t all that keen on the Serbians etc winning their freedom; but the locals were pretty determined.

Lawrence (of Arabian fame) didn’t create the Arab partisans opposed to the Ottomans, but he did use them; Arabs don’t much like Turks ruling over them. Post WW1 the Arab parts were split up with differing spheres of influence roughly along “racial” lines with the exception that the Kurds were ignored. So were what was left of the Armenians.

Also not widely known is that very shortly after the end of WW1 (1919-22) the Greek dominated parts of Turkey (basically the entire Mediterranean Coast for some distance inland) tried to win their own freedom, however they were ruthlessly crushed. Perhaps it would be just as correct to say that the Greek Government tried to take over parts of the Turkish mainland including Smyrna. The European powers (ie UK and France) had originally supported the carve up of Turkey, but renegotiated their agreements and left Turkey as an entity.

I’m not sure why you wish to ascribe blame as you do; Turkey was disintegrating before WW1 and the major cause was internal politics and stagnation. Ataturk revitalized the Turks, but Turkey’s empire was gone once they took arms (as they chose) in WW1; and would probably have gone anyway. The end result would probably have looked something like it does now, it is hard to imagine what sort of governance would have emerged from the complete chaos of a Turkish collapse in the Middle East if the UK and France hadn’t interfered. Democracy in any form is alien to the region, so probably some form of Caliphate(s), probably after some truly serious internecine slaughter. In theory, the UK and French intervention probably stabilized the region and saved a lot of lives, but who really knows.

Here I am stiffie ! Greetings from Ko Lanta , an island paradise about 3 hours easy ride from Phuket. Reminds me of Ko Samui 20 years ago..like milkmike, untouched. Me and the thai princess ( read hooker ) rode down here yesterday..fantastic. Low season so everything is half price ( including the hookers ). 5 nights here then another easy ride to Ko Samui for a few more then over to Ko Phangnan full moon party island. This is the life trendsetters..this is living ( and well done Lydia Ko, what a champ..what a star )

Mum did eventually get her ashes spread on Caerphilly mountain as per her wishes . We just took almost ten years to get around to picking the ashes up from the crematorium.
My family is not heavily into head stones, plaques , memorials and other pointless sentimentality.

The husband didn’t have a funeral service for his mum.

I went looking for whanau gravestones on Iona and Arran…. their inscriptions had all been weathered away…..perhaps they weren’t even my rellies.

Well Andrew Little is really starting to come off well with the flag debate.

Labour says voters should have been asked first whether they want to change the flag, before being presented with alternative designs.

The referendum is being held the other way round, with voters first asked to decide on the alternative design, before being asked in March whether to get rid of the current flag.

Whether you like Labour or not he has a very valid point. The current process rightly or wrongly smells like a John Key stitching up the process to favour his desired outcome.

If Little gets his way I will be voting for no change, and Red Peak as my preferred alternative.

The NZ rugby team are forced to bribe young rugby fans to attend their media event by giving away one of the team sponsors product. Very few young fans attended. The ones who did hardly seemed in awe of the players, most would have had no idea who they were.

Now, imagine if Christiano Ronaldo had posted just one tweet saying he was offering coaching at a London location, thousands of young kids would turn up without having to be bribed by addidas.

A member of my family attempted to do a genealogy but even that dissipated into the mist of time in only three generations.

I go back to Olaf the Fart according to one version of Macdonald genealogy….. whatever,
but as I’m a Macdonald on both paternal and maternal sides, it all gets a bit confusing which Flora/Donald belongs to which line.

I am also descended from the McDonalds. My grandfather spoke often of Flora McDonald and the Highlanders.
He was actually Cornish, but of Scottish descent – his family, the Pipers (pipers of the McDonald clan) were removed from Scotland in the 17th c. clearances, and transported to Cornwall, where they intermarried with the Cornish, but proudly retained their Scottish heritage.

I have been doing my homework as set, then did some reading on the counter arguments. The later are much more compelling and factually based. Your theory was based around connections to Zionist Jews who do business and life together in a plot to commit evil, with 1+1+1 possibly being 3. The missing 4000 being a central point. However the missing 4000 can be factually and statistically refuted leaving only the fact that birds of a feather fly together, ummm no shit Sherlock.

I expect now to be told that this what ‘they’ want me to think, I sincerely ask with no malice, is there a different ‘they’ who want you to think a certain way??

Regardless I’m still left thinking that I would rather put my energy into the things that I can influence, my family and friends, and try to improve their lot than putting energy into global ‘concepts’ (also some energy into trolling retards like star4harry, just for kicks)

I wonder if our friend took his SuperGold Card with him. After all, according to http://www.supergold.govt.nz/ you can get:

1) discounts and offers from a range of businesses.

2) government concessions (including free off-peak public transport).

They’re a bit vague about ladyboys & bulk antibiotics but there’d be no harm in asking. 🙂

I do not know the date. I read somewhere that a half day has been allocated but cannot find the original report. The High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court all publish upcoming hearings. The District Court does not.

The CA declined Dotcom’s application because it was next to impossible to deal with the material presented within the time frame (among other reasons) but noted that he could present the same arguments to the DCJ hearing the application (Dawson DCJ , I think). You can expect an application for an adjournment to be presented, and any other possible step to defer the case. There is a right of appeal on questions of law. Dotcom’s reluctance to visit USA is apparent. He will fight for as long as he can.

The District Court has jurisdiction on extradition cases. Its function is to determine whether Dotcom is eligible to be surrendered for extradition ( dont ask me, I didnt write the Act). If he is eligible then the court issues a detention warrant and sends the package to the minister who decides whether he should be extradited. There is a presumption in favour of extradition but the minister can say “no” in certain prescribed circumstances ( eg if there is the death penalty).
I suspect that Dotcom will soon start unravelling. His comment today that the court is a dancing bear owned by the USA was silly.the courts have bent over backwards to give him a fair hearing. So far there have been 10 abandoned hearing dates.
It has been a long time since I went to Court to witness an event. The last one was in the High Court in ChCh.

I cant remember what it was about other than it was a subject that interested me. Geoffrey Palmer represented one of the parties. He had me asleep inside 10 minutes.

I think you’re wrong, SPC. The best account I know of the border reivers is George Macdonald Fraser’s book. The title is “The Steel Bonnets: the Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers”.

The eminent historian, Hugh Trevor-Roper, described this as: “A splendid book, both scholarly and readable, accurate and alive.”

Here’s a few of the English or joint English-Scots families/clans of the border reivers: the Bells, the Charltons, the Fenwicks, the Forsters and Grahams (both mainly English), the Hetheringtons, the Musgraves, the Nixons (Scottish and Englilsh), the Robsons (mainly English but also Scottish), the Storeys …

Why was Kiwi Ko wrapped in the NZ flag? Isn’t that a little disrespectful to the Korean viewers? Who takes a big flag like that to the golf anyway? Was it her NZG minders? I don’t recall that happening when Michael Campbell won the USA open. But curiously it also happened when Danny Lee won the US amateurs. Funny that.
