      Yes, of course this includes the right to damage your own health. To the extent that this imposes a cost on other people, that can be addressed by adjusting the way in which we pay for healthcare – ie, bringing in the “responsibility” bit – rather than by undermining the “right” bit.

    I detest smoking with a passion. If plain packaging will help deter people getting addicted to cigarettes then it has the tick of approval from me, irrespective of which political party proposed it.

      If she hadn’t smoked would she be alive today and if so in what state? We don’t know the answer to this but there are a lot of people in dire circumstances in rest homes – some smokers, some not
      
      My mother didn’t smoke but my Dad did but they both died

        She was in her early seventies Andrei, but she was in very poor health for her last 10-15 years, largely because of the emphysema. She became a recluse, and the fags were her only company. At the time of her death, she looked like someone many years older than she actually was.
        
        Would she still be alive today? Quite probably she would as all her health problems in her later life were lung problems.

        As you age you decline – some faster than others – all sorts of factors are at play lifestyle, genetics and misfortune
        
        High performance athletes have a lowered life expectancy surprisingly or not as the case may be
        
        I notice my own decline, it makes me sad and in reality I bet you do to – I’ve swallowed five pills already this morning sigh
        
        Still I have lived longer than my ancestors most of whom that I know of never made fifty though my grandparents generation died violently in war

      Sorry about your parent’s life choice and the unfortunate condequences.
      
      However this is placation-based politics that I cannot get behind. It’s like the kid whose parent died in a car accident, who goes all weepy eyed and collects signatures to get some measure approved into law to appease their grief. The change may do no real benefit, yet won’t someone think of the children gets it there.

  It won’t work anyway. It didn’t work in Australia, and they had to fudge the data and impose heavy taxes in the end.
  
  No evidence exists indicating that plain packaging led to a reduction in tobacco use. In fact, smoking rates in Australia actually increased after implementation plain packaging regulations.
  
  That’s because smokers stopped buying cigarettes based on brand preference. Instead – since cigarettes all look the same – most folks just bought the cheapest cigarettes they could find. Cigarette companies, unable to compete on quality or customer loyalty, engaged in a price war. As a result, prices dropped and smokers could afford more cigarettes.
  
  The number of adult smokers increased for the first time in a generation, and the proportion of teenage smokers increased by 36 percent in the year after plain packaging was introduced.
  
  Australian lawmakers responded by levying one of the world’s steepest tobacco taxes, sending cigarette prices soaring to nearly $20 per pack. Naturally, smokers responded by buying fewer packs or quitting.

  Plain packaging was introduced in December 2012 and was hailed at the time by Labor Health Minister Nicola Roxon as the “world’s toughest anti-smoking laws”. But the plan appears to have backfired as half of the increase in sales have come from the cheaper brands, suggesting that smokers merely switched brands and smoked more because they were cheaper.

Six of the 8 legal aid offices are to close, centralising activity in Auckland and Wellington. Only a tiny reduction in staff numbers but probably a significant saving in premises and duplication of services. Sounds like a good thing.

But a precious petal in Christchurch – barrister Liz Bulger – says it is a disaster. Because it is sooo important to be able to talk to someone you actually know. Plus nobody asked her.

“That potential for face-to-face meeting, or at least being able to get someone on the phone that you know if you’re doing it by phone or by email, is really important. The centralisation means that all of those relationships and all of that goodwill and knowledge is gone in an instant.”

“Ms Bulger, who is also the Law Society’s legal services committee convenor, said the ministry failed to consult with the society, and the wider legal sector, before announcing the closures.”

Listened to a patsy interview with an immigrant Indian worker for the current red radio / ETU beat up on Sistema on the way to my impoverished workplace in Mt Wellington.

The worker claimed that he had quit working for Sistema as he had had enough of the 12 hour shifts and sleeping through his days off, took a career change and became a bus driver (still possible to work twelve hours a day but takes 18 hours over three spit shift periods I would imagine)

Worker claimed that working conditions were better in India.

Well bugger me! Who would have thought that!

When I went to sleep last night, the average employee in New Zealand benefited from conditions that I am confident are not available in India that include:

o A minimum wage topped up by the heartless state with WFF if required,
o A ‘wage’ in the form of a social security benefit in times of unemployment,
o Four weeks paid holiday a year,
o Five days per annum sick leave
o Bereavement leave,
o Maternity or paternity leave,
o Ten days public holiday,
o A ‘free’ education system,
o A state pension scheme with medical for the twilight years,
o Water from taps, all the time every time that can be drunk safely (99.9999% of the time)
o Toilets that flush and stay flushed,
o Access to a medical system that will do its best to achieve the best possible outcome for EVERYONE,
o Cars for the untouchables to sleep in because the local authority is likely to clean the streets on occasion and it would be inconvenient to sweep up those sleeping in the gutter,
o OSH (for all its sins) meaning the average ship yard worker is not working in flip flops and will most likely make it home to his family which will not be worrying about having to kill the eldest daughter in an honour killing because she looked at a boy from another caste.
o The ability to study to be a doctor, to practice as a doctor rather than become a cab driver in Auckland with a degree in medicine from a dubious university.
o A mere 4.471 million neighbours compared to 1.252 BILLION
o Traffic that moves even in Auckland!

Feel free to add to the list.

If life in New Zealand is so terrible, why has he not taken the rewards from working at Sistema and gone back to India where I believe they have the dubious honour of having six of the ten most polluted cities on the planet.

My NZ First hat on; fuck off and try your luck with moaning to a union in India or any other crap hole on the planet that is not New Zealand.

        Exactly. Which brings us again back to Nanny Notional abandoning its stated principles. Loyalty to country and national and personal security. By bringing in low skill migrants they abandon New Zealanders seeking work and increase the security threat the nation faces from certain migrant groups. They know this as they have passed unprecedented security laws around travel and surveillance due to the threat from Muslims resident here.

        A rellie in Australia has periods of unemployment, and has to undertake 30 hours a fortnight of voluntary work for a non profit in exchange for the dole.
        
        He works at a local council plant nursery, and most of the others there are long term unemployed as difficult to employ, mainly due to a level of disability. So more like a sheltered workshop.
        
        NFPs register and are approved by the government, which also facilitates placements.
        
        If we tried this here, would the unions object? (Probably though Australia is more heavily unionised than NZ.)

        But given we are doing that and no major party has any intention of changing it, it is sensible to bring in people who do actually want to work and contribute to society.
        
        Fruit is not going to sit on vines waiting around for a government that will enact welfare reform.

I see that the Haters and Wreckers Teacher’s union have just started their Unions led lead up to next years elections.
Sadly they still believe that Governments – unless they are left wing – really do not care for the future of New Zealand’d children. Unless they are in charge and not a duly elected Government.
From what I am seeing which is late middle aged well fed ladies who are attempting to protect their well paid jobs – whether they are any good a teaching doesn’t matter they have been there for Aons so they are entitled.
They do not understand that this country has moved on from Unions – which is why fewer and fewer younger people – especially Teachers are not joining despite peer pressures from strident socialists.
Angry Andy – do you not realise that once again you are going to piss off parents and the many Teachers who do not subscribe to your left wing philosophy.
Teachers Unions – despite your holding children and families to ransom – get real.
This is 2016 not 1960.

    This will open up the opportunity of the old flip top cigarette cans that I remember while working in factories while at School/uni. The purpose was to keep the ciggies dry and free from being crushed. This is a way of branding.
    
    I’m not sure if legislation stopped this or giving a reasonable quality branded cigarette lighter with say a carton of cigarettes. Offer that one week a year. Just saying. You are up against professional marketers who know how to sell a product that kills their customers over time.

    I’m writing this very slowly as I know you’ll struggle to figure it out: a woman letting someone carry out a sexual act with her for money doesn’t entitle them, you or anyone else to commit any non-consensual sexual acts of any kind with her, and if you do commit any such non-consensual acts it’s sexual assault exactly the same as if you’d ambushed some woman walking home and done the same to her.
    
    If you do struggle with grasping that, please take the trouble to learn it anyway, as it could save you from getting a criminal conviction and possible prison sentence at some point.

    The cops investigated, so did the Rugby Union, indeed the later initiated their inquiry before having to seek out her version of events. Part of me thinks that on the balance of probabilities her version is accurate as teams of their very nature adopt the attitude “we hang together or we all hang separately” no matter what the challenge from outside their ranks. is a fact of human nature.
    
    Also, Scarlette has likely now made herself unwanted as a stripper (unless she now adopts a new name – can’t be that hard, but the reputation of being potential “trouble” will still deter some from using her services). Then again, as she went first to the media, there is the possibility she was trying to leverage a media pay out by exaggerating, embellishing or even fabricating the details. Significant also she said ‘she had been in that type of situation before”. Hmm. So there are obviously risks. It’s not usually wrong to ask people in any job to identify and manage risks….so why the accusations of “slut-shaming” and “rape culture” if and when the same questions are asked of…a stripper? One stripper-agency intimated as much…
    
    The Chiefs “crime”? Being stupid and putting themselves, and therefore by extention/implication their employer, the Chief’s “brand” and their game in a potentially bad PR position. Was neanderthal. Rugby has done a lot to be a more gender-inclusive community, and in the main that has been successful.         And even if those allegations had been put directly to the players, common sense says you would have got the same reaction from them.         There seems to be some notion that there should have been a more rigorous and public inquiry and because the salacious taste buds of the anti rugby brigade have been insufficiently sated this inquiry is deemed pathetic.
        
        Point 1. The critics have no idea who was interviewed and how compelling the evidence of those, unrelated to the team, and who said that the incidents did not take place may have been.
        Point 2. This was not and could never have been a public inquiry. An employer was investigating whether misconduct took place. Employers do this sort of thing. They do not, as a matter of course, engage retired policemen to investigate employment matters as has been suggested.
        Point 3. Employer/employee misconduct investigations are not matters of public record. The news media does not get invited.
        Point 4. Scarlette apparently refuses to cooperate with the police. Scarlette apparently withheld info from the rugny union and may not have been altogether helpful. That is one very weird looking ship, especially with that strange, 1900’s-Dreadnought-type backward sloping bow (seen also on the latest Round-The-World yachts).

    Thanks for that info on the yachts Ed. I first noticed it a couple of years ago when my wife and I were out to dinner with some Chicago friends visiting Auckland, and we walked straight into the RTW folks coming in. I’d wondered at the time why the bows were like that and assumed some sort of change in yacht technology for dealing with heavy seas. Despite our guests being supposedly mad keen on yacht racing they didn’t know the reason either!
    
    I see that things like the Zumwalt are sucking more electricity than ever before and that this increase will continue with the addition of lasers and railguns in the next decade. So much so that I’ve read of ideas for putting in gas turbines purely to provide that power, not for propulsion.

      About 1.34 times the square root of water line in feet gives the hull speed in knots.
      A vessel with a sweep back bow would probably slow when heeled over as the waterline length decreases as the heel increase.
      
      Playing with bow shapes bumps and other ideas can sometimes give advantage within rating rules .

    Interesting comment (not from that link) by somebody in whose backyard this was built (he says he’s annoyed he didn’t see it go out because of several days of rain and mist).
    
    While it was undergoing sea trials up here, it had to use a big ole radar deflector on it because the fisherman said that it simply wasn’t showing up on their collision avoidance radars despite it being 600-something feet long.

The Union decided that there was no place for these people at school so suspended or expelled them leaving them with no career choice and a problem for their parents and the law,so National came along and with Act created Charter schools and now a lot of these children are excelling in these creative schools.Now we have the union taking Teaches out on strike because they believe just like they do with Charter schools they have better qualifications than the National Government and should dictate what the funding policy should be.It is time for Union bullies and Labour Party Leader Andrew Little to grow up and look to the future for our children and stop going back to when the Union thought they could hold NZ to ransom

    If the circumstances were as stated that action was reprehensible.
    
    The issue has now morphed into something between sexual assault and pathetic moralising fed only because the people involved are paid to play a game.
    
    The Rugby Union should have stated dealings between some employees, on their own time, and a perfectly legal contractor is nothing to do with them (unless the police lay charges that may impact playing availability) and walked away.

Does “smoke-free by 2025” mean the Petone factory will cease producing cigarettes for Australia where they contribute to an estimated 20,000 deaths a year, four times the New Zealand total?

  There comes a point when the result of prohibition overrides the benefit we see from reduced smoking.
  We are reaching that point .

For once I find myself in agreement with the above. National appears to me to be trampling on property rights. If smoking is a legal activity then companies which are producing cigarettes should be able to freely pursue their activities. Plain packaging is an attack on the brands which they have painfully built up and is part of their property rights in the same way that Coca-Cola has built up a brand over many decades.

National is in danger of going down the same route that labour did in its 3rd term. That is an excessive interference in the lives of ordinary citizens going about their everyday activities.

Smoke-free by 2025 is also the type of target that I would expect leftists to pursue. Leftists love big national targets that involve major government intervention and the trampling over individual and company property rights. Conservatives on the other hand look for gradual improvement, respect the property rights of law-abiding citizens and companies and allow people to go about their business without excessive government interference.

Very disappointing move from a national government in my opinion.

    Double standards. I well remember the screams from the Left about the “aging” Reagan. As far as Quayle is concerned there were jokes still being told about his stupidity in the early 2000’s. But Biden is Quayle on stilts: I think he’s the stupidest fucking VP the US has had in a century. Dumb does not even begin to describe him, and yet it’s just waved off by the press corp as “Well (chuckle), that’s jus’ ole’ Joe”.
    
    The difference is how the theme spreads outside of the political junkie circuit. I recall Rock station DJ’s in NZ cracking wise about Quayle: I don’t recall a single joke from the same crowd about Biden. That’s how it works.

  I’m not familiar with how the US classify their stuff, but here one would expected to read ‘classified’ or ‘unclassified’ in an email header. Individual paragraphs in a document might be marked as (C), (S) or (TS) (confidential, secret, or top secret) as appropriate depending upon their content. The overall classification would be according to the highest classification of any particular piece of information.

  Add to this that there are extant cables from Clinton released via Wikileaks that show Hillary Clinton using the “C” on cables to indicate Confidential material – she DOES know about the use of “C” in that way.
  
  She lied to the FBI. That’s a perjury offence, anyone else would skate.
  
  Then there’s the clear timeline on the email deletions; Clinton (and her aides) had her emails deleted and the email server “bit bleached” after having already received subpoena’s from Congress for those records. That is most definitely illegal conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. There being a policy to delete emails over 60 days old (also illegal with respect to State Department related matters; and we know that at least 17,000 of those were deleted but recovered forensically), is not relevant; if the evidence under subpoena exists it must be retained. It is absolutely clear from the FBI evidence that they were deliberately deleted AFTER the subpoenas were issued.
  
  How much criminal behaviour can one excuse just because the criminal is Hillary Clinton ? There’s one set of laws for the general populace, and an entirely different (and considerably more lenient set) for the ruling Democrat aristocracy.
  
  Would one of her supporters here care to try to explain why these are not criminal and should not be prosecuted ? Other than the “She’s Hillary Clinton !” defense.

  I think Clinton has reached the Costanza definition of lying: “Jerry – it’s not a lie if you really believe it”.
  
  I think the following is a fairly concise take on all her bullshit with the emails:
  
  Clinton told the FBI that she relied on others’ judgment in sending her sensitive information on the unsecured email system. She also claimed that as a result of a head injury she didn’t recall key events such as being trained by the State Department on handing classified information or retaining records in accordance with federal law.
  
  Clinton, as a U.S. senator, served on the Armed Services Committee from 2003 to 2009. She was a member of three subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities. In that capacity, she would have been instructed on how to handle highly-classified information and a great deal of it would have passed through her hands. She would have had many occasions to handle it and to transmit it among her colleagues and staff and executive branch officials. Further training by the State Department would have been unnecessary for her to know how such information had to be protected against disclosure.
  
  Clinton’s obvious lie was one of many she told the FBI. Let’s remember that on at least one occasion, she told her State Department staff to remove the classified markings on some material and send it “in the clear” on an unsecured channel — her private email system.
  
  The FBI found that Clinton had used a multitude of Blackberry and other personal devices while she was secretary of state. Thirteen of them are missing and have never been recovered. Anyone who has used a Blackberry or other personal email device can testify that they last for years. Clinton, while she was secretary of state, apparently got a new one every six or eight weeks. All of those devices, given the frequency of her communications, would have had classified information on them.
  
  And of course the excuse of that head injury runs entirely against all the whining and excuse-making about how we should dismiss any concerns about her health. It’s basically a Lie For The Day – to be completely refuted tomorrow when the subject changes.
  
  She’s more like Trump than she or her supporters are willing to accept.

I was watching Bill O’Reilly on Fox News the other day and he didn’t think there was much to the Hillary’s health issue?
I’m usually quite amenable to Bill’s thinking but in this case I think he has it wrong. Fox News went live to Hillary’s first press conference of 2016. She answered questions for about 10 minutes and looked terribly uncomfortable. She is not what you would call a happy warrior. She then had a coughing fit and had to excuse herself. At that point the live cross finished and Fox News went back to the studio.

But here is the thing. She has not held a press conference because she is uncomfortable with the press asking her lots of unscripted questions. She is uncomfortable because she has so many issues to be uncomfortable about. I think this has played on her health. She appears to be doing the bare minimum to try and win election to be president of the United States.

Given what she is like as a candidate how would she be as a president? The press can expect maybe a yearly press conference? And given the pay for play as Secretary of State, Lord knows how she would wield her influence as president of the United States?

  In a govt dept some years ago in Wgtn I shared the bathroom with a young guy from the dept’s Maori Liaison Unit down the hall so we got talking and one of the things he said was that he thought that the gummint should be providing free dental care to all Maori on the grounds a lot of them have bad teeth and they can’t afford the dentist.
  
  The values at the heart of an attitude like that need adjustment which can only be done through mass communication media. Sadly the values and attitudes of the people who work in and run said media are the ones who’ve generated this in the first place so it’s only right that they correct it.
  
  The reason is, it’s a bad thing to have an entitlement set of values and attitudes. It’s unhelpful for the person who holds them and it’s unhelpful for everyone else who have to deal with that person’s demands for accommodation.
  
  This is because there is something inherent in the human sole that transcends sex, race, nationality. Everyone has it and it’s not a learned trait it’s as I said, inherent in every single human being apart from those so damaged they’re not sentient.
  
  It’s the need to be independant. To operate as a self-caring, self-providing, self-sustaining unit in the world, as a fundamental way of life.
  
  Life experience operates on this need and some experiences encourage its expression and some discourage. Enough experiences of either of those kinds eventually seems to bring about a kind of truce in the soul, an agreement that there we are, that’s how I’ll be on this issue. This isn’t a conscious decision and I don’t think it’s a moment in time thing as decisions are, either, it’s more a gradual inclination until some tipping point is reached.
  
  Once that point is reached then the mind does what it does on a lot of things and starts subconsciously discarding data and experiences which denigrate the position and accepting that which reinforces it.
  
  The way to change a position reached subconsciously is to surface it so the person consciously realises what has happened. That is, genuinely in their own mind (i.e. not faking it for the viewers), the person themselves consciously acknowledge the dynamic and understands what in their own experience has led them to the position on this spectrum that they currently hold.
  
  Getting them to that point is the hard part because people naturally get defensive about someone twiddling with their subconscious. But once they get to that point the rest is straightforward education.
  
  The way around that defensiveness is to use parables, as in, soap operas, movies, dramas, comedies, messages from role models and the like to illustrate the difference in happiness, success and security that people who have the desired trait have and contrast that with those who haven’t.
  
  The solutions quite simple and no-one can argue that it’s sinister because who can argue that encouraging and facilitating an increase in an individual’s independance is sinister? (stephie, you listening?)
  
  And given the deliterious effects on generation after generation after generation on and on and on and on and on into the future which is what we all face if this trend continues, not just on people who have this entitlement but we who have to support increasing numbers who have it, who can argue it wouldn’t be beneficial to do it?

So Griff, you don’t think it is a crime to destroy evidence AFTER it has been subpoena’d ? The evidence is pretty clear from FBI interviews that Congress subpoena’s Clinton’s emails. On 4 March 2016 preservation orders were sent to Clinton, the Domain Name registrar and the ISP for Clintonmail. On 9 March the Platte River Networks (PRN) group who maintained became aware of the order. On 25 March Cheryl Mills had a conference call with an engineer at PRN, he refuses to testify about that call pleading the 5th. On 31 March a job ticket was created at PRN and on the same day all HRC related emails on the server were deleted, and then the server was “bleach bitted” or forensically wiped to prevent recovery.

A preservation order (subpoena) from Congress is a legal requirement that documents be retained, but Congress has no action apparatus, it forwards a request for action to the DOJ. So the DOJ won’t (of course) prosecute. So Clinton is able to happily defy any subpoenas that she likes; is that reasonable ?

I guess by your answer Griff, you are agreeing that it is acceptable for laws not to be enforced as long as the benefit flows to a Democrat ?
