What a disgraceful display from Metiria Turei and the Greens yesterday. They refused to vote for a motion congratulating Trump on his win, and even demanded a party vote so that their opposition to the motion would be written into Hansard.

Clearly, they only approve of and accept democracy when it delivers the result they want. It was a new low from Turei, which is saying something. (Her contribution starts around the 4:15 mark)

This morning the NZ MSM is still banging on about how Trump’s support all came from “White voters without a college degree”, often “rural” or “older”

Given a “degree” these days is as common as muck and 80% of the time is not worth the paper it’s printed on, it is such a despicable tactic, to paint a picture of Trump voters as backwards rubes and slack jawed yokels, unlike the slick well informed urbanites who voted for Hillary (and of course get violent when their beloved “democracy” doesn’t go their way)

Of course they never make remarks of that kind when referring to the Latinos/Blacks who voted for Hillary who, as we all know as a group, have lower/significantly lower IQs and levels of education than Europeans.

Given that over 60% of whites voted for Trump and over 70/85% of “minorities voted for Hillary I think it is fairly safe to assume that the average IQ of the Trump voters is greater than the average IQ of the Hillary voters – and also much more tribal in the way they vote (which unlike Europeans who lean Republican, the MSM doesn’t have an issue with)

    During a recent month in the UK this attitude towards the Brexiteers was evident in the comments by so many Remainer friends- Brexiteers were low-life, uneducated, white, voting because of prejudice and not logic, and so on. I am reading exactly the same things now from Clinton-voting friends in emails from the US: Trump voters were poorly-educated, they were white (presumably another mark of the neanderthal low-life), they were mosogynists, homophobes, supporters of the KKK and so on. To such people democracy is a good thing only when their candidate wins.

      Yes, testing as it is done measures something and it does seem to vary within broad “racial” groups. Quite what it measures isn’t really agreed upon, and also unclear is the extent to which the racial grouping is merely a marker for something like cultural influences or is related to underlying genetic influences.
      
      It is definitely stretching it to call it intelligence as such, but to think of it as some form of that within the cultural milieu that it is measured is possibly not entirely incorrect.
      
      Worth noting for those wanting cry racism too quickly over this that on these measures there’s three basic levels; Asians, then Caucasians, then Africans thought that’s being very broad. So it can’t really be claimed to support white supremacists, they’re only second class types in this hierarchy !
      
      Also confusing is the Flynn Effect, (named after a NZ’er) whereby apparent measured IQ is going up by a measurable amount over time. Confounding that is the observation that people simply aren’t that much smarter. So it does all seem to be bound up in quite what is being measured and how. Not pseudo science as such, but not at all well understood.

  In the past baby boomers left HS with a Diploma and got good paying union jobs, today the millenials leave university with a lot of debt and might or might not get a job.
  
  The baby boomers voted for Trump (these people are numerous and they turn out to vote) and many do not have a “college” degree.
  
  Like the older Brexit voter, they are concerned about the impact of immigration changing the demographics of society. And like all those without domestic sector secure jobs or global market professional status are concerned about wage levels and job security.

        Born circa 1955. 4% of cohort gets an undergraduate degree.
        Born circa 1995. 26% of cohort gets a degree. More than half of that is HR Fluff n stuff.
        
        Quite frankly if you left school in NZ in 1970 at 16 you could get an apprenticeship and be a qualified tradie at 20 then own a house at 22. Many 22 year olds today have debt and are no better prepared to take on the world than when they were 14.
        We see this with the crybaby ‘it’s not fair’ thugery in the US this week.
        
        How are tertiary quals helping things?
        About 60% of NZ graduates from tertiary are now women (ergo 40% are male, or confused).
        Yet we are told women earn 12% less that men in NZ (on KB about a week ago).
        It would seem tertiary qualification with the mass produced crap of sociology, anthropology and Wimins studies is not an asset itself and gives no right to claim intellectual superiority.

On tv – kiwi woman reporter at (Auckland ?) airport vox pops middle-aged American white couple just arrived in. Do they know the result ? No – we’ve just got off a 12 hour flight, so no. Trump won. By their priceless silent reaction, screwed up faces and trying to walk away . . .

Why do people in Labour say that Stuart Nash is the future of the Labour Party.So after hearing his praise for Andrew Little and voicing his opinion that his leader is a winner and would win the next election i wonder where he sourced his facts.The evidence of history goes agianst what Nash has said ,for instance how can this man be a winner when under his watch at the CTU union membership took it’s largest drop in member in union history,he has also stood in what used to be the safe Labour seat of New Plymouth twice losing both times to National.This so called winner makes statements that slander people and to my knowledge has not been a winner yet,so people take your own view if this man is a winner he must not know what losing means

Not a word or compassion,about the poor unfortunates,who Letele,has condemmed them to a lifetime of virtually bread and water. While i agree that if Vicki Letele has a short time to live she should be at home with her family to see her time out i would like to give another view without being seen as heartless.In and arouund the 1986/87 sharemarket crash and the fraud case’s that followed would you show the same compassion as people are now if one of your loves ones had taken their own lives because fraud had wiped out their and family’s life savings.

  But it also depends on the GOP in Congress. Even after the disappointments following the 2010 and 2014 elections, they’ve been given another chance.

        • Obama leaving his signature domestic reform — health care — in the hands of people least likely to come up with a plan palatable to a majority of Americans.
        
        • A cap and trade bill so horrendously corrupt and mismanaged that its passage in the House marked the first time in years that Republicans out-polled Democrats on the generic congressional ballot.
        
        • A candidate who called Afghanistan “the necessary war,” is now on his second major review, just since March, of how to fight it.
        
        • Never meeting once face-to-face with the general in charge of commanding that “necessary war.”
        
        • Telling the world Gitmo was evil, then leaving it open for business.
        
        • Sitting on intelligence, until just this Friday, showing that Iran’s WMD program is more advanced than feared.
        
        • Selling out Eastern Europe to the Russians. We haven’t had a Democrat do that since Roosevelt.
        
        • A foreign policy initiative for Iran which relies on the idea of both China and Russia not selling stuff to somebody with cash to spend?

It’s interesting that there’s a huge cheering on here for those who voted in Trump. They’ll typically be people who lost out jobs due to globalisation, living in depressed areas in the states. But when people in NZ in the same position complain the opinion of commentators here seems to be they should suck it up, retrain and shift if there’s no jobs. Why the different regard to those in the States?

  It could be as simple as the idea that many people in NZ in the mid-80’s welcomed massive change because what existed seemed to no longer work. So most people don’t want to go back in time, and the result is that those who wish to wind the clock back have gained no traction.
  
  By contrast, the America of the 1950’s – or even the 1980’s and 90’s is regarded as a time when things “worked” and many – perhaps most – do want to try and go back to those times. This is not just a Right-Wing-When-Whites-Dominated meme applied by the US Left, it also applies to the US Left itself – at least judging by the paens to the unionised, well-paid jobs and stable culture of the 1950’s that I’ve seen the likes of Krugman and others pen.
  
  I’d also add the fact that quite a few of the Trumpitistas here are raging for Winston or somebody to stick the knife into John Key. Although they’ll never vite for Labour/Green, they hate Key and place him in the same basket as the Bushes, Clintons, Blair, Cameron and so forth.

      I remember writing in 2008 on Kiwiblog that I doubted whether Key would do much as PM. It seemed to me that he’d be Holyoake 2.0. And in certain situations that’s not a bad thing.
      
      But Key and company have never really tried to even make the arguments for long-term, fundamental changes to our state systems. I guess they think that feelings from the 1980’s are still too raw to allow for words like “fundamental change” to be bandied about.
      
      However, there’s just nobody else to vote for unless you want to see Green-Labour in charge.

    Short answer – no. For example, unemployment money is literally insurance in the USA. In theory you build up a small, fund from your salary/wages, based on how long you work, then draw that down during unemployment.
    
    Once the fund is gone, you’re done, and if you’re in low-skilled, temp jobs mixed with periods of unemployment, it gets really tough over time.
    
    Meanwhile, the welfare system is so fractured that you almost have to approach it as a full-time job itself to get much – which many people increasingly do. Hence tens of millions of “unemployed” who’ve simply given up looking.
    
    It’s a tough system, no question. Which makes the trillions spent on “welfare” over the last fifty years, look even more useless in truly helping people.

  The extent of Trump’s victory from me was a surprise, though.You learn to take these kinds of things on the chin and unlike maybe you, and other Trumpists don’t make it central to living and running my life .
  
  The Democrats for that matter need to regroup and reform .
