  That’s amazing Oda. Thank you. First part was the southern end of the Hundalees out of Cheviot. Not sure how they got the vehicle over that metre-high barrier (or did they swap cars?)
  Looks like about 150km of highway is going to have to be completely rebuilt. That will take a long time irrespective of whether Fulton Hogan, the Japanese or the Chinese get the job.

With all these Govt departments now without a home one option would be to consider the Karori campus of Victoria University – the one they bought for $10 and would like to sell for $20m.
Those buildings are apparently well in excess of 100% of earthquake compliance, there are many individual offices there and the seminar and lecture rooms could be turned into open plan offices. It also is on a good bus route and there is plenty of parking. And for the staff at lunchtime there are half a dozen tennis courts as well as the Karori pool. What Karori does not have is Lambton Quay shopping or many coffee shops.

If you’re going to lecture Americans about their hatred for “building a wall”, you should have no wall yourself.

If you’re going to push abortion, push it in all countries.

If you’re going to push “pluralism”, you should be leading by example and having “pluralism” in your country.

It’s identical to the shirts Cubs players wore over their uniforms immediately after winning Game Seven in Cleveland.       Structural engineers in Wellington should be congratulated for the work done to e/q proof work CBD buildings. For an earthquake now rated at 7.8 damage was minor. It should be remembered that as in fire protection the requirements are to protect public safety as a priority over preventing building damage. Nobody was injured.

        Trout … I am baffled why there has been this damage in Wellington, when the major event early Monday morning was between Kaikoura and Hamner Springs … much closer to Christchurch than Wellington.
        
        Im based in Christchurch. The tremors experienced here in Christchurch early Monday morning were very moderate.
        
        There is much we need to learn about the problems experienced in Wellington.

        A 7.8 earthquake over 200km away. intensity drops off with distance, would be <6 equivalent in Wellington.
        
        Also general trend of major earthquakes moving north along fault (Darfield 2011 – Hanmer/Kaikoura 2016) suggests next big earthquake location could be Wellington region in next decade or so. Similar behaviour noted in other major faultlines around world like Turkey:

        Clearly the forces went mainly North along the fault lines, borne out by the fact that most of the aftershocks are coming from the Seddon area.
        Nothing south of Hanmer (yes, that’s how it’s spelt).

He is getting long in the tooth: in 2050 he will be 104 years old. But, thanks to the miracle of daily monkey gland injections, the drinking of gallons of Amrit Ras and the yearly blood sacrifice of a mewling sycophant on the world’s longest-running TV series The Apprentice, this world leader, and former president (2020-4), is still going strong.

The failing newspaper has gone a step to far with BWD’s cartoon this morning. I sure that if BWD’s house feel around his ears and he needed evacuation he would be pushing to the front of the queue to get on an American helicopter. I know he is upset that his cartoon of the protest against the US is no more because they are helping the poor citizens of the earthquake but BWD, pull your head in you socialist prick.

‘The U.S. Geological Survey has made its largest discovery of recoverable crude ever under parts of West Texas, the federal agency announced Tuesday.
A recent assessment found the “Wolfcamp shale” geologic formation in the Midland area holds an estimated 20 billion barrels of accessible oil along with 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. That’s three times higher than the amount of recoverable crude the agency found in the Bakken-Three Forks region in the upper midwest in 2013, making it “the largest estimated continuous oil accumulation that USGS has assessed in the United States to date,” according to a statement.
“The fact that this is the largest assessment of continuous oil we have ever done just goes to show that, even in areas that have produced billions of barrels of oil, there is still the potential to find billions more,” said Walter Guidroz, program coordinator for the USGS Energy Resources Program.’

  In both NZ and the UK we have seen the phenomenon of left wing parties losing and deciding in response to ‘return to their roots’ and move further left. And when this has not worked for them they have doubled down and moved further left again. At this point, in both the UK and in NZ, Labour are deep in the hole and digging fast.
  
  The same thing is about to happen in the US, especially with the Bernie Sanders phenomenon giving them reason to hope that a more left wing message might appeal. Expect the Democrats to move a lot further left over the next few years. Will it work for them? I doubt it.
  
  Did people really support Bernie because of his left wing views. Some did for sure. But a big part of his appeal was that he wasn’t a Clinton. He also came across as non-corrupt, as his own man, and as a genuine person. And he was a change candidate like Trump at a time when people wanted change. In short I don’t think the Bernie phenomenon is great evidence that left wing views sell well in the US, especially not outside the Democratic party.
  
  Remember that we only saw Bernie in action in the primaries. Some polls do say he would have beaten Trump. But why should those be any more accurate than the ones that said Hillary would beat Trump.
  
  Anyway it will be interesting to watch.

to put his view here. In saying that joining in the discussion with constructive comment would be more helpful. Sniping from the side line is only one step above
spending your day down ticking. The strength of Kiwi blog is it freedom to post.
Unlike that other blog with its selected contributors policy or the bastion of socialism
The Standard.
Having different political and religious views should be encouraged.
It will bring more diversity to the discussions.

The Clinton Team would have been ready to go, and positions filled immediately with those expecting favours for ‘services rendered’ to Hillary. Trump is used to hiring the best for the job, and the transition team is just that – transition.

In the latest incident of anti-weapon hysteria to erupt in a school setting, officials at a middle school in South Florida have suspended an 11-year-old girl for six days because she brought a child-proof, toddler-size cutlery knife to school and used it to cut a peach in half for a friend.

Astonishingly, local police are now investigating the fact that a little girl cut a piece of fruit with a tiny knife at school. She faces the possibility of criminal charges.

The unidentified girl was preparing to eat the peach. A friend asked her for half of it. The girl then used her harmless toddler knife to cut the peach and share it with her friend.

“This is a set of a spoon, fork and knife for toddlers — one year old,” the girl’s mother, Andrea Souto, added. “It is made for children to learn how to eat properly. She’s used it since she was baby.”

School officials say they suspended the girl for six days — and notified police — because she violated a countywide weapons policy when she used the toddler knife to cut a peach in half for her friend.

He Toki Huna: New Zealand In Afghanistan

1.) Instead of the usual assortment of political deadbeats, professional time-servers, paid liars and mealy-mouthed “comedians” that usually comment on our “involvement” in Afghanistan, this documentary went to people who really know what they are talking about. So during the hour, we were privileged to hear the insights of such people as James Fergusson, the author of an acclaimed history of the Taliban; Donald Matheson, senior lecturer in journalism at Canterbury University; journalists Nicky Hager, Jon Stephenson, Mike McRoberts and Ali Safi; and even the odd honest New Zealand soldier, namely the Army patrol man Alpha Kennedy.

2.) Of course, to balance out the rigorous analysis and honesty, Goldson presented us with a gruesome line-up of liars and scoundrels, but they were shown up for what they are, rather than being treated seriously as they usually are in the obedient corporate media. These liars and scoundrels included: the new NZ Defence Force chief Dave Gawn; the “civilian director” of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Richard Prendergast; U.S. General John R. Allen; NZ Chief of Defence Rhys Jones; former Defence Minister Wayne “Inane” Mapp; Commander Shaun Fogerty of the NZDF; and “Not So Honest” John Key.

3.) Nicky Hager revealed a leaked internal memo that set out the government’s and army’s PR strategy: “simply repeat at all times that we are not going to war in Afghanistan, we are going there to assist in reconstruction.”

4.) When NZDF chief Dave Gawn was confronted with this, he blithered: “I’m not familiar with the document he’s talking about. But consistent messages are important. Otherwise you’re all over the show.”

5.) Jon Stephenson actually did something radical: he went out and interviewed some Bamiyan locals. Their responses completely undermine what our Government and Army officials have been saying for ten years. While the Hazara people in Bamiyan acknowledge the NZ soldiers have done some effective security work, they dismissed the idea that the Kiwis have done any useful reconstruction—which is what they are supposed to be doing there. The verdict of the young men being interviewed: “It’s a joke. Their reconstruction efforts were of no use.” ….. “They built my school, badly. It’s falling down already.” The projects were damned as piecemeal, and amateurish.

6.) New Zealand soldier Alpha Kennedy: “We have to ask ourselves: would we tolerate the presence of foreign soldiers in New Zealand? The Afghan resistance is very similar to the Maori tribes fighting the British invaders in the nineteenth century.”

7.) Mike McRoberts: “Our presence in Bamiyan attracts resistance. We draw fighters into Bamiyan by the very fact we are there.”

8.) Television footage of street demonstrations following the Qu’ran burnings by U.S. troops. Major General Gawn has an answer ready: “There are a hundred thousand American troops in Afghanistan. There will always be a few bad apples.” Gen. John R. Allen tries to muster up every bit of gravitas he can as he assures the U.S. television audience that those responsible for the Qu’ran burnings “will be tracked down.”

9.) The Taliban are far more popular than the foreign press would have us believe. Even the many Afghans who do not care for the Taliban admire them for taking the fight to the occupation forces. Even in Kabul, support for the Taliban is open and widespread. Major General Dave Gawn acknowledges the frustrations of fighting against guerrillas: “They are an insurgency. They don’t wear a uniform. They live amongst the population.” Such frustration was also voiced by the Germans in Yugoslavia in the 1940s, by the Americans in South Vietnam in the 1960s, and the Russians in, errrr, Afghanistan in the 1980s.

10.) Nicky Hager: “The Taliban is the name for anyone who doesn’t like us.”

11.) Footage of Rhys Jones and Wayne “Inane” Mapp blithering confusedly about SAS troops being there to “mentor” the Afghan “forces”, and then being immediately undercut by the infamous photo of Willie Apiata and an SAS comrade striding through Kabul, with guns smoking. Commander Shaun Fogerty sounds off about the publication of the photo: “very disappointing.”

12.) New Zealand has little history of journalists confronting official lies. Nicky Hager: “The ideology of the heroic soldier is almost beyond question. To even question the mission—not the soldiers, but the mission—is heresy.”

13.) The documentary effectively and damningly shows the hurried official attempt to cover up the truth of the botched mission that led to the death of SAS Corporal Douglas Grant. Lt. Gen. Rhys Jones comes across as particularly dishonest, but he is the embodiment of Truthfulness when compared to Prime Minister John Key, who reiterates obvious lies at a press conference, then refuses to answer any questions.

14.) Another damning clip of Key, this time spinning his lies on TV One’s Breakfast programme, while interviewer Corin Dann sits mute and bewildered, as usual.

15.) As the documentary nears its end, even Major General Dave Gawn allows himself to acknowledge reality: “I’d be very guarded about whether the insurgency is growing.”

16.) James Fergusson: “We are pursuing exactly the same strategy as the Russians did.”

17.) Donald Matheson: “It is the job of New Zealand journalists to help us work out what has happened.”

18.) Jon Stephenson: “It’s the job of journalism to hold the powers-that-be to account.”

19.) Interestingly, this documentary was preceded by a warning that it contained language that could offend. There was actually no swearing at all on the programme, so I presume this was a sly critique of what we were about to hear from Gawn, Jones, Allen, Prendergast, Fogerty, Mapp and Key.

20.) I’ll leave the last word to an honest soldier, Alpha Kennedy: “The future is very, very grim.”

    As far as any time-frame for sorting his team out is concerned, because his election has caused such a kerfuffle, he’s been derelict in his duty by not sorting everything out by the end of last week. In fact this should all have been organised in advance of the election.

More importantly, I expressed dismay that disgraced antivaccine quack Andrew Wakefield reportedly met with Donald Trump and found a receptive ear.
        
        Trump, it turns out, has a history of making wildly ridiculous antivaccine statements dating back at least to 2007. That was when I first discovered him and referred to him as the latest celebrity antivaccinationist drinking the Kool Aid of vaccine pseudoscience. A few years later, I noted his risibly nonsensical claim that a “monster shot” causes autism. Truly, Donald Trump’s history of making idiotic antivaccine statements is long and sordid. It seems the earthquake was not a natural occurrence, but man made to take over Kaikoura coast for oil exploration, this is objected to because of whales in the area and ruination of coast for American profit .This is happening under Obama admin ,nothing to do with Trump.

John Kerry was in the area checking on climate change,coincidence?American EQ scientists there before quake also,check it out,all dissapeared before quake to observe their mischief from a safe distance.

I’m reminded of what Winston Churchill said: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter”. How many Elles are out there?
