The pope followed the US election campaign carefully, and four days before the vote cautioned against “social walls” and “false prophets”.
The 79-year-old Argentinian pontiff has repeatedly voiced support for immigrants, and last year made an impassioned speech on cultural diversity in Philadelphia’.

He really appears to be an Obama-like Pontiff.

      While I don’t agree with the Leading Mufti, at least his talk and his actions are consistent.
      
      Leading Mufti says let’s kill all the infidels and is consistent with that – at least in being hostile to other religions.
      
      Pope says let’s open up our arms to everyone and accept them, but then lives securely behind walls with an armed guard etc.
      
      Mamma Merkel isn’t much different. She’s happy to give the “refugees” the run of Germany, but lives in a well secured residence protected by an armed guard too.

      Not necessarily.
      Many Catholics around the world are very concerned that Pope Francis seems confused because he makes so many contradictory statements – note the cardinals who are calling on him to correct errors in his exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’, which has several serious contradictions.
      If he refuses, then the cardinals can move to have him removed – but I doubt it will ever go that far. But there is concern that he may not be too well in the head – maybe some mental disorder. We’ll see.

      The problem with many of the statements that Pope Francis is making is that they are leading the liberal wing of the church to conclude that big changes are afoot in certain areas of doctrine. Pope Francis will not in fact make such changes but his successor will have to deal with the mess of expectations that he has created. As the darling of the progressive MSM Francis is alienating a significant section of traditional and loyal Catholics. That includes me.

  Typical Greens don’t realise financial realities. Rent to buy by life’s losers invariably leads to mortgagee sales. If they can’t manage a deposit on their house purchase, then in most cases they won’t keep up their mortgage repayments. Nothing has changed in 500 or so years and the Pontif seems to be almost deliberately unaware of the RC Church’s history against the muslims; the Seige of Vienna was evidently of absolutely no consequence…

Sometimes those who ignore history are forced to re-learn it, and I doubt that the Swiss Guard will be of much use should ‘re-education’ become necessary…

    Perhaps it is that people would rather just watch it via TV and skip all the parking hassles, scalped tickets and wowsers telling you what you can drink while you’re watching.
    
    You can watch it when you want, where you want. So you can watch it at home and skip over the boring bits.
    
    If you want atmosphere then just go watch at the pub. Easier parking and a meal and beers cost less than a ticket.

So yesterday a car appears parked across my driveway entrance despite the fact that there are numerous available carparks all along the street, all freshly painted.
I can’t get my car out.
Left it for an hour or so then rang the parking enforcement dept. at the council. The man came, wrote out the relevant tickets and called the tow truck.
Offender turned up before the tow truck arrived, to be confronted with a bill for $512, comprising the fee for obstructing a driveway, the fee for expired WOF and registration, and the fee for the tow truck which had already been ordered.
Is this a fair price to pay for total stupidity?
I think so.

  Many years ago I had a mate with old stuffed landrover. He lived in an area of town across from a sportdfield and often had people park in front of his garage.
  
  He then put up a sign saying “Vehicles parked here will be pushed out of the way”. They still parked there.

  But here in Dunedin even if you are registered and have a current WOF you can still get a ticket if you park your trailer for more than seven days …. cost me $40 and I was outside the marked carraige way.

      Some of those questions should be asked and it may be appropriate to charge someone. However, that is a lot different than what you said in you initial comment.
      
      The crash occurred about 6 pm. If it had happened at 2 am then a lot more questions should be asked.

        I am not saying that at all. Questions should certainly be asked especially how they got the keys. However, just like everyone should be entitled to a fair trial it is the job of the police to gather evidence and ask question before deciding whether to charge anyone.

        The issue I am on about is cowardly anti Maori racism and common decency. When a family is grieving for a lost child common decency says you do not put the boot in.
        
        Have you ever driven over the alcohol limit? Have any of your friends or relations. How would you feel if one of them smashed into a tree and people were saying good riddance?

  1) So Matt – now that you are firmly in place where you can do most harm to Labour’s chances – how do you feel about the Left facing a 4th straight electoral defeat.
  
  2) Matt, has the rejection of the Left’s particular brand of fascism that saw Trump sweep to victory in the US, caused the Labour party to wake the f*ck up and realise they’re on a pathway to oblivion unless they give up on failed policies from the 1960s.
  
  3) Does the totally expectable rejection of a party-picked career criminal in Hillary in the US give the unions any pause for thought that maybe they really screwed up in installing first Cunliffe and then diving deeper to put “Loser” Little in as party leader?

      I think the point is that Mike Pence has supported some fairly extreme legislation as far as the LGBTQASAP communities are concerned. He supports the unproven and often harmful ‘conversion therapies’ as well as extremely restrictive abortion legislation.
      He went to the theatre where the leading man is an openly gay, HIV+ actor. What did he expect to happen?
      Its not as if Mike Pence has been telling those communities how to live their lives is it?
      My point is that if Trump and Pence are upset about a couple of Luvvies in a theatre saying that they hope he will be inclusive of all Americans, then they are the sensitive little cupcakes.

I’ve not checked on Trump’s Twitter response but I’m not aware that Pence said anything at the time, although he may have responded to media questions since. In fact the story has broken because some people in the audience captured the moment on video and it was also put up on the official Hamilton Twitter account.
        
        So your point about Trump-Pence being “sensitive little cupcakes” is just piling insult upon snide, dismissive insult. As one writer pointed out:

And I would have been correct to do so, despite Politifact” rating it as “true”. Instead I found this analysis – on Reddit of all places – that demonstrates in some explorative detail that that claim has a very high, even “ultra” high degree of spin. I’d just say it was a bullshit claim – like the ones surrounding Sessions being a racist.
        
        Politfact? More like Politispin. It’s not as if they don’t employ people who could investigate the way the Reddit guy did.
        
        I also liked the reflexive snideness of the cast hoping – that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf all of us – because naturally, without inspiration from folks like them, Pence and company would be hopeless at that.
        
        Of course.

        I’ve used the Apple TV/iTunes service for streaming and the like for several years now, and I noticed a few months ago on their “Movies – Genre” sub-section, that they had re-titled what had been “Gay and Lesbian” to “LGBT”.
        
        My first reaction was to laugh. First at the terrible social pressures they must have been under in Cupertino Drive. Second at the thought that they had still not got it right – just like any other clueless, uniformed group of bigots.

Like more than a few others, US Right-wing writer, Jonah Goldberg, while taking the floggings for sticking it to Trump repeatedly over many months, still has a huge smile on his face as he sticks it to Hillary…

Among Hillary’s greatest problems wasn’t that she was a liar, but that she was so bad at it. When Bill lied, it was like watching a jazz impresario scat. You could pull him off an intern, slap him in the face with a half-frozen flounder, and he could, without missing a beat, plausibly explain that he was just a gentleman trying to help push the young lady over a fence.

But when Hillary lied, which was often, it was like watching a member of the Politburo explain to a hungry mob of peasants that food-production targets exceeded expectations. Hillary never seemed to fully grasp that Bill’s lying skills did not become community property when they got married along with his collection of back issues of Juggs and that shoe box full of used pregnancy tests. There was music to Bill’s lying while Hillary deceived the way Helen Keller played the piano.

In 2008, people would ask me if we were finally done with the Clintons and I would respond, “Haven’t you seen any horror movies?” Freddy Krueger and Jason always came back.

But now, I think they’re really gone.

And with them goes the infatuation — along with the fear. People forget the cult of personality, the willful suspension of credulity, that was integral to these gaslighting grifters. When Bill Clinton congratulated Dan Rather and Connie Chung for their softball interview of the first couple, Rather responded: “If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been together in the White House, we’d take it right now and walk away winners.”

    I think what Trump does is often mindless: he just says whatever is needed in the heat of the moment. I really don’t know if he knows himself what the truth is in many situations, although in that one, he must have. I don’t think he cares, which is why he so often refers back to, that’s what i heard (as with his claims about Curz’s dad hanging around with Oswald in ’63).
    
    It’s the difference between a bullshit artist and someone who truly lies – someone who knows the truth but says the untruth anyway, with malice aforethought. That was Hillary. Whereas Bill merged the line between liar and bullshit artist, which is what most politicians are. Trump is further along that scale, and without the Southern charm.
    
    Now the worshippers of each person will deny all this of course, but once again we are talking about the double standards applied by the MSM, best exhibited by that Dan Rather quote, which sounds no different to what a lay worshipper would have said about Bill and Hillary. And yet that was not what drove Rather from the profession.
    
    What I heard from Rather’s evolutionary descendents in the MSM over the last 12 months was that Trump was a liar (often true), but that what Hillary said was “careless”, “shading the truth”, etc.

Grannies for Peace -Make Tea…Not War’ picnic is to be held this Sunday 20th November.

From 1.00pm-2.00pm at The Cloud, Queen’s Wharf, Auckland Waterfront, while the NZ Navy’s 75th birthday open day is taking place.

We will be assembling in the seated picnic area outside the Ferry terminal next to the Pou (Maori totem poles).

Grannies and friends will be dressed up in pink and flowery Granny -type finery to send a colourful, peaceful message to the Government that we don’t want foreign warships visiting our peaceful waters, or Arms Fairs in our lovely City of Peace!

Grannies will be joined for a sing song of our favourite peace songs led by the ‘Ukes Not Nukes” band at 1.30pm.

    I have read plenty of stupid articles about the eq this week, and that has to rate pretty highly amongst them. We have a journalist telling us all the things [they think] the experts have got wrong, displaying in the process their own complete ignorance.
    
    They present as some kind of central proof of this failure by Geonet et al that they underestimated the magnitude, suggesting a 6.5, and that they had to rely on the Americans to get the right figure.
    
    Anyone with any level of EQ knowledge should know that EQs of large magnitude cannot be measured at all accurately close to the epicentre, – such calculations rely on data (wave) readings from much further away…USGS being ideally placed.
    
    It behooves anyone wanting to criticise someone for ineptitude to at least grasp the rudimentals.
    
    (and what’s the nonsense conclusion that a 6.5 would make NZers turn over and go back to sleep? Chch was a 6.3!!)

I’m amazed by the sheer hate and fear expressed in the stories coming out of America since their election. Obviously this is mainly reported by the MSM – but they can’t be wrong ALL the time and the stories seem to show the Anti – Trump camp in a bad light.

The hate and fear seems to be coming mostly from the Democratic side against the president that the country elected – but there is also a fair bit coming from Trump supporters too.

I don’t remember this degree of polarisation in previous elections. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems that their country is facing a really serious social crisis on many levels.

In the churches of the Germans his emissaries saw no beauty; but at Constantinople, where the full festival ritual of the Byzantine Church was set in motion to impress them, they found their ideal: “We no longer knew whether we were in heaven or on earth,” they reported, describing a majestic Divine Liturgy in Hagia Sophia, “nor such beauty, and we know not how to tell of it.”

Woman sues KFC for $28m after chicken bucket isn’t filled to top

Anna Wurtzburger, from New York, recently bought a US$20 bucket from the fast food chain, and was outraged to find it looked different to the “overflowing” buckets in KFC’s ads.

“I came home and said, ‘Where’s the chicken?’ I thought I was going to have a couple of meals,” she told the New York Post.

“They say it feeds the whole family … You get half a bucket. That’s false advertising, and it doesn’t feed the whole family. They’re small pieces.”

The company sent the 64-year-old two gift certificates, offering her US$70 worth of chicken, but she sent them back, and instead hired a lawyer and launched a legal battle, demanding US$20 million.

Yes, apparently a US$20 bucket meal corresponds to a US$20 million claim, and I’d love to know which idiotic lawyer advised her.

I note that this thread opened with a comment about a television programme. Well, I have just watched a show that may well go down in history as the one that really began the death of TV networks as we know them. Due to the wonders of a VPN I have been able to pay for and watch the first episode of Jeremy Clarkson’s new show ‘The Grand Tour”. It was nothing short of outstanding. I cannot wait for next weeks episode.
