Clive James: ‘Trump’s boasts spring from an aching wish’. Any man who drivels about women when he is alone with a man has no clue what to say when alone with a woman.

Hence Trump’s frequent verbal atrocities. They are all boasts and, like all boasts, they spring from an aching wish. My own guess is that Theresa [May], having sussed in advance that her interlocutor is a blithering saddo, will put him at his ease with an extravagant compliment about his non-existent personal magnetism. “That thing on your head is divine,” she will be already saying during the soup course. “So elegant, yet so masculine. How do you keep it in place? Surely only the strongest industrial adhesive can contain something so powerfully virile?” By that time, she will be breathing in his ear and he eating out of her hand. Cue violins.

      You mean one of :Menachem Begin, Yitzakh Shamir, Ariel Sharon, David Ben-Guiron.
      All were leaders or members of terrorist groups during the British Mandate.
      Even after Israel was created by the UN, there were jewish terrorist groups active in Israel who wanted a halachic state ( jewish religious law) or attacks on arab civilians.
      Other times Israeli state sponsored groups have operated in Arab countries, such as the cineman bombings in Egypt in 1954 ( Lavon afair)

        Interesting to consider the standards by which contemporary leftism judges: the poor dear offended Muslims and Arabs, who have had a few hundred thousand brethren dislodged by a few dozen kilometers, can be excused decades of global terror with a death toll in the tens of thousands, and rising (and the role of religious fundamentalism, absolutism and exceptionalism in all this can be whitewashed): while Jews, having suffered centuries of persecution and periodic pogroms at the hands of both Islam and Christendom, and finally European fascists and their “final solution”, cannot ever be excused a bit of armed paranoia now and then.

        Can’t say I’ve noticed an identifiable “Punic” people existing down the centuries and being persecuted everywhere they go.
        
        For that matter, there is no such thing as an identifiable “Palestinian” people identifying with a few kilometers wide strip of land on the eastern Mediterranean. They were always Muslim Arabs, completely homogenous with Muslim Arabs everywhere from Morocco to Iraq. It is nothing more than a form of medieval imperialism, to be militaristic about every few square kms of territory lost to the glorious “Umma”, whether it be Israel or Timor Leste (or even Spain), especially when combined with a record of brutality and repression of the original indigenous inhabitants. Were Arab Muslim nations liberal societies welcoming of Jews, it is possible the whole course of history might have been different. There could be a liberal democracy embracing the region with a Jewish minority existing in peace and prosperity amongst their fellow citizens.
        
        The track record for minorities of ANY kind, not just Jews, in Muslim Arab nations, hardly supports the realisability of this dream. Funny how the western “progressive” left forms alliances of convenience with illiberal and imperialistic forces without any sense of hypocrisy.

        I have long suspected that the setting up of the State of Israel was in any case a “wink, wink, nudge nudge” extension of the Final Solution. Who, in 1947, expected the Jews who made it to Palestine, to survive the inevitable invasion by the overwhelmingly stronger Muslim Arab states surrounding it?
        
        The anti-Semitism pervading many European nations even in 1945 was a disgrace, with many Jews surviving the Holocaust unable to get pre-war property restored to them. Packing them off to Palestine to be massacred by the Arabs, was NOT the mistakenly charitable act that it is made out to be; people are not thinking this through.
        
        The inevitability of the invasion was a given, but the survival of Israel was a miracle that was inconvenient for many. Including you, obviously.

        Since 1939 the UK government had blockaded Jewish access to Palestine, and this was still in place as late as 1947 when the UN made its partition plan vote. And the UK opposed the founding of Israel in that UN vote.

        As for seeing no difference between Arabs, why not between Africans, Asians and Europeans as well. Why not one nation for Europeans, one for Africans one for Arabs one for Asians – or why not one for Christians, one for Moslems and one for Jews etc.

        I know those facts about the British blockade of Palestine. I don’t see that it contradicts what I am saying. The fact remains that there were European Jews with nowhere else to go, and the establishment of a new Israel was another convenient “final solution”. The Jewish population doubled within days, with the new arrivals, even as the fighting started.
        
        “Europe” is nowhere near as racially and religiously homogenous as the pan-Arab region I refer to. In fact the borders of the various nations involved, it is often complained, were imposed by the European imperial powers. However, Christendom is now largely post-religious and secular, and minorities are generally better off there than they would be in their “own” native or co-religionist countries. The same can NOT be said for minorities in Muslim Arab countries. One of my main points is that if Jews had been a tolerated, prosperous minority in secularised progressive Muslim Arab nations, including whatever “nation” embraced “Palestine”, none of this would have been necessary.
        
        There happens to be 1.5 million Arabs in Israel, and numerous non-Muslim refugees from the surrounding region have been granted a home in Israel, including black Africans. It is not an “apartheid” State; non-Jews are not second-class citizens, unlike non-Muslims in most Muslim countries.

Whatever you may think of Israel, what is being condemned includes individuals taking other individuals’ privately owned property and building on it without the owners’ consent. Or does the law somehow not apply when the Israelis do it?

      As the Committee for Accuracy for Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) pointed out –
      
      Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Conventions, which is relied upon by those who claim the settlements are illegal, does not apply in the case of the West Bank. This is because the West Bank was never under self-rule by a nation that was a party to the Convention, and therefore there is no “partial or total occupation of the territory of a High Contracting Party,” as Article 2 of the Convention specifies. Moreover, even if it did apply, by its plain terms, it applies only to forcible transfers and not to voluntary movement. Therefore, it can’t prohibit Jews from choosing to move to areas of great historical and religious significance to them.
      
      Ps, the AP had to correct itself because the US does NOT describe settlements as “illegal”. They say “illegitimate”.

Well to hell with all these bludgers as all my Xmas wishes are sent to the taxpayers and contributors of this country many of you who will be still working today to keep things going.

  Christmas Day in Auckland CBD – quiet as the grave – everybody has left it seems.
  
  On way saw the most undignified thing I have seen in recent years – had to go to Pukekohe – getting there from the Motorway I saw a street – named
  “Len Brown Drive”. Fancy buying a house in a street with that name – surely the prices must have been subsidised – or was it nor named after the houses were built.
  What an undignified sight.

      I know it’s the season of good will etc.. however I really get pissed off when tourists arrive on buses at the City Mission on Xmas day and after paying their tour guide a fee, partake in a free meal. Money is not forwarded on to the mission.
      
      Unfortunately Asians are the main offenders and I suspect they have been duped by their tour guide.

  I know what you mean, but I have mellowed in my judgement of National. They are not effective fighters of political war. I don’t think they are deliberate sell-outs on principles on which they should be making a stand; I think they are clueless in the first place, incapable of even thinking issues through on principle, because they don’t even know what the principles are. They are just nice people from nice walks of life, to whom holding political office is like membership of the Rotary Club, only more impressive. In contrast, most people in Labour/Greens have spent some proportion of their lifetime immersed in studying politics and political war.

Scorched almonds and cashews placed around for maximum grazing potential before lunch itself. Christmas carols and songs are playing. The Government is broadly in line with NZ opinion with its motion to isolate Israel. It is a military state that threatens the security of the Middle East with its apartheid views towards the Arabs. The Vatican didn’t have enough money in the budget to restore the Sistine Chapel so a Japanese company did it in exchange for the copyright privileges. The Vatican itself has a yearly budget that is equivalent to the Archdiocese of Chicago, and frequently runs on a deficit. For instance, in 2001, revenues were $173.5 million US, expenditures were $176.6 million, including capital expenditures.
    
    The big beautiful traditional Churches that receive the most complaints were not built with big bucks. They were built with the sweat of the brow of volunteers who worked ’till 11 PM every night after a full day of working their regular day jobs. They would do this for years until their community parish was built. For the big European Churches it would take many generations. The Cologne Cathedral took 700 years!

Unfortunately, Mikenmild forgot to bring the drinks (so he says), but thankfully Reid saved the day with his stash of Peroni. There’s one thing I’m hoping that other Kiwiblog readers can clear up.         My wife is Asian and she is has an uncanny knack for producing traditional Anglo Saxon Christmas fare better than anyone else …Our cat Lu lu awaits expectantly for left overs but the Missus is strict in regard to these matters so the cat will have to depend on the usual boring pellets .
