        Some more of the exchange between Nixon, Kissenger, Chou Enlai and Mao. The latter may have been a bloodthirsty tyrant who deliberately and/or by incompetence cut the short the lives of some 50 million of his countrymen…but on the bright side, he did have a self-deprecating sense of humour:
        
        Dr. Kissinger: I used to assign the Chairman’s collective writings to my classes at Harvard.
        
        Chairman Mao: Those writings of mine aren’t anything. There is nothing instructive in what I wrote.

        President Nixon: Chiang Kai-shek calls the Chairman a bandit. What does the Chairman call Chiang Kai-shek?
        
        Prime Minister Chou: Generally speaking we call them Chiang Kai-shek’s clique. In the newspapers sometimes we call him a bandit; we are also called bandits in turn. Anyway, we abuse each other.
        
        Chairman Mao: Actually, the history of our friendship with him is much longer than the history of your friendship with him.
        
        President Nixon: Yes, I know.
        
        Chairman Mao: We two must not monopolize the whole show. It won’t do if we don’t let Dr. Kissinger have a say. You have been famous about your trips to China.
        
        Dr. Kissinger: It was the President who set the direction and worked out the plan.
        
        President Nixon: He is a very wise assistant to say it that way. (Mao and Chou laugh.)
        
        Chairman Mao: He is praising you, saying you are clever in doing so.
        
        President Nixon: He doesn’t look like a secret agent. He is the only man in captivity who could go to Paris 12 times and Peking once and no one knew it, except possibly a couple of pretty girls. (Chou laughs.)
        
        Dr. Kissinger: They didn’t know it; I used it as a cover.
        
        Chairman Mao: In Paris?
        
        President Nixon: Anyone who uses pretty girls as a cover must be the greatest diplomat of all time.
        
        Chairman Mao: So your girls are very often made use of?
        
        President Nixon: His girls, not mine. It would get me into great trouble if I used girls as a cover.

        I (still) have a copy of Nixon’s Memoirs – a great read.
        
        Apart from his teensy weensy error in not just throwing his burglars to the wolves on Day One I really reckon he was the best President I’ve yet lived through – Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Snr, Clinton the Male (heh heh), Bush Jnr, Obama and now Trump are all WAY inferior in my judgement.

        Likewise on RN’s memoirs – although it is a bit unnerving whenever he lapses into the third person! “Richard Nixon is made of the finest tempered steel”! John Ehrlichman, who was his domestic affairs advisor and spent time in the slammer over the Ellberg psychiatrist and also (I think) the Watergate break-in had it right when he said Nixon was the strangest man to ever occupy the Whitehouse.
        
        Conrad Black’s tome on Nixon is good too – but, while rightly praising Nixon for the opening to China, he criticises both Nixon and Kissenger for slobbering and over-praising Mao and Chou when they met in person. Also gives good insights, that Nixon omitted, on how Kissenger used to undermine his boss in petty self-serving ways.
        
        The “problem” with the burglars was that they were connected to John Mitchell, who was weighed down by the problems with his wife, Martha. Nixon had it right – he was not a good butcher, and waited too long before discarding Mitchell, Haldeman and Ehrlichman.
        
        Mind you, Nixon foolishly listening to Kissenger on the (impossible) requirement of a leak-free administration on the morning after the Pentagon Papers were first published in 1971 was the thing that first set the plumbers into motion…

    The problem with trying to luvvie up to splinter groups is that it is not additive. Every time you add a splinter group then you annoy the others that don’t feel so special any more. You end up only appealing to people who are in all the splinter groups.
    
    If you try to give special treatment to people in state houses and gays then you end up appealing to only gay people living in state houses. ie. a splinter group within a splinter group.
    
    The way Labour is going, the only vote they can count on is Georgina Beyer (unless of course Mana comes back from the grave).

The alleged person of integrity Greg O’conn, standing for Lie-bour in Ohariu, once supported the Police to be armed totally. Now for a possible fist full of dollars ,in a taxpayer funded trough by sitting in Parliament ,O’conn dosn’t think that is such a good idea after all..

Nick Smith on moaning report continues the hands over ears approach over housing.
I can’t see the demand side.I can’t see our policy of letting 70,000 immigrants into New Zealand (or what was New Zealand) is having any effect on housing at all.
I can’t hear the people telling their representatives that mass immigration is having a huge flow on effect with lack of infrastructure, forcing down wages and spitting kiwis out the back door at an alarming rate.

The UN will be proud of us.

  And on the other hand, the “supply of housing” side, if you wanted to do the mass-immigration thing with some integrity, there are regulatory regimes under which housing supply will be elastic enough that mass immigration and population growth would merely provide economies of scale at constant (or even reducing) prices.
  
  There are US cities growing twice as fast as Auckland, with house price median multiples stable at around 3. One of the reasons they are growing so fast, is the attraction of the affordable housing, not just for a significant number of immigrants, but young Americans bailing out of the unaffordable cities.
  
  The multiplier effects on local economies, from building LOTS of housing, and putting in LOTS of new infrastructure, paid for over time by the tax contributions of the new residents, are considerable.
  
  We like to kid ourselves that Texans, for example, are ignorant rednecks and it is us, the Europeans and the coastal liberals in the USA who are sophisticated and smart. The more I learn, the more the evidence points the other way. There is such a thing as basic common sense, which beats academic, up-its-own-arse, virtue-signalling values systems hands down every time.

    I support his more reasoned, well thought out, balanced approach to immigration and thus the effects on our economy.

      But he understands the role of urban planning and the distortions it can create. You can have almost no growth at all and still have unaffordable housing.
      
      I am not supporting mass immigration, I just say we must not regard that as “the solution” and ignore distortions on the supply of land side.

    You need to invest in big wide roads if you want cities to be able to grow with affordable housing. Gridlock sees many people taking 60-90 minutes to reach the CBD from the edge of Auckland now.

  Immigrants need houses. They also need food and clothing. But there is no food and clothing shortage. There are three main reasons for the difference:
  
  1. It’s easier to produce or import more food and clothing than to build more houses.
  2. People are not investing in food and clothing – buying more than they need for their personal use.
  3. The government (central and local) does not use regulations to obstruct increases in the supply of food and clothes.
  
  To blame immigration is to say that reason 1 is far more important than reasons 2 and 3. But I don’t buy that. This issue has been around for a while, much longer than the time it takes to build new houses. Supply would have corrected itself by now if reason 1 was dominant.

  A Huge part of the Auckland problem is that Auckland Council was formed by Notional/ACT in 2010. It was rushed. You can’t make that big a cock up without intending to.
  
  Prior to this hideous conglomeration the four main Councils (West, South, Central, North) were run reasonably well and Councillors/Management understood about debt and income and that each new house would provide rates (income) every year. They were in some equilibrium with their community. They also watched debt.
  
  Then along came the abortion that is Auckland Council.
  They stopped allowing new houses to be built.
  Remember -this Hydra was formed 1 Nov 2010. The GFC had eased by then.
  They killed housing consent and filled the revenue shortfall with Debt. The predecessor councils had run up $3 billion in debt over more than 100 years.
  Auckland Council ran up an additional $3 billion Debt in 3 more years and this was used to employ more staff(instead of the reduction that was falsely promised) while services were contracted out from the old (pre 1990) model eg Roading, footpaths, rubbish collection etc.
  There s not a lot that 21st century council staff actually DO.
  Auckland Council could be run on under 4000 staff.
  
  The Notional Govt has allowed the immigration to run wild and NZ is No 5 choice for ‘education’.
  To make up numbers the Notional Govt allowed ‘citizenship’ as a carrot to attract and it is an alternative immigration path from less than desirable countries.
  
  The reduced attractiveness of Australia as a place to live (substantially reduced access to benefits) has been known about since 2001. Australia has been a safety valve for the NZ economy since the 1950s.
  NZ has recession at least once every 10 years and they can be prolonged.
  Australia has not had one for 26 years.
  
  It is just shithouse management from Notional, Smith included.

  Measuring GDP in Venezueala is broken.
  
  They have multiple exchange rates. The “official” exchange rate that is used for the GDP, government wage stats and can be used to import limited amounts of goods is 10 bolivar / USD. That makes the Venezeulan very highly paid compared to the rest of South America.
  
  However only small amounts of goods are available at those prices.
  
  The “real” effective exchange rate is the black market rate of 4000 bolivar/USD. That means the Venezeulan only earns 1/400th of what the government says they do.

Why are we having campaigns to stop Domestic Violence and then in the next breath try to pass a bill to reward by creating ten days of payment for workers on the receiving end of this crime. I don’t beat my wife or children and I in know way agree with it but what we are doing is paying for people to put up with it knowing that their is money coming in and giving time to make up with the perpetrator. This wont stop Domestic Violence the only thing that will is to get away from the people dishing it out.

  That’s a bit like the tongue in cheek suggestion that I made about schooling:
  
  We all know (from what the luvvies tell us) that poverty causes poor performance in school. Therefore it is really easy to identify the families who are having the worst of poverty: they are the kids performing worst at school.
  
  So let’s fix this. Give $1000 per month to the family of the kid who’s doing worst in the class.
  
  After a month or two the extra money will help that kid do better at school, then the family won’t need that $1000 any more and the next worst-kid-in class can get it.
  
  This will lift the kids performance like a sky rocket by focusing on the most need.
  
  It is so simple. What can possibly go wrong?
  
  It is way too easy to turn an allowance/compensation into an incentive. We do it with single mothers, we do it with people getting sore backs. And now, it seems, we’re doing it with domestic violence!

    Instead how about pay parents and children a cash bonus based on performance in some externally set test every 3-6 months. Say 30% to kid and 70% to parents. Bet that would work better than almost any other educational reform you could name.

The other funny thing is how quickly Labour and the Greens are prepared to sell out their principles in order to recruit the likes of Jackson and O’Connor. God help us if they ever get elected.

  The common motivator for them, is “opposing nationalism”, Brexit and Trump is what has made them think of going into politics. And the Greens are their chosen vehicle.

    They’re being slammed in the comments section because it’s been subtitled “Greens add three more high-profile names to books” and these women are anything but high profile.
    
    I have to hand it to the Greens though: they’re very smart at capturing the overseas votes by playing on the environmental thing. Best comment on that page so far was this one:
    
    I love expats voting in accordance with their green conscience when they will not suffer any of the financial consequences (e.g. carbon taxes, compliance costs) and contribute nothing in the way of taxes. Meanwhile they happily live in the likes of the UK, an economy that was founded on fossil fuels and which, for example, still only generates 25% of electricity from renewables as opposed to New Zealand’s 80+%.

I see the Proletariat in the US are screaming that they have not yet become millionaires as Trump promised before the election and want to know when this will happen, preferably in the next few days –
Obammer did the same thing in 2008 and what did he do – sweet FA, in fact they proles were worse off at the end of his reign.
Obammer is using huge money, not his own new huge wealth, to foment unrest wherever he can against Trump aided of course by the Clinton Clan. The Clan now includes Soros via Chelsea Clinton into the family by marriage.
It is reported that who lost over a billion on the election backing Clinton.
It is believe that Obummer may have suborned some $400 million before he left the White House for this purpose.
Where has this money gone if this is factual ?
Has any President or former President ever been in arranged under corruption charges ?

    But Muslim communities do practice aspects of Sharia already – there are halal butchers, and Muslims schools, just as there are Protestant and Catholic schools. And just as with Christians with their ecclesiastical courts – synods, presbyteries, sessions and vestries, etc, Muslims are allowed to govern their own social and religious affairs…as long as it does not break the law of the land or impinge on the freedom of others.
    
    But yeah, the line should not be moved any further. And burqas should be made illegal in public, for security, not religious reasons.

Right of way is Way of Right

I’ve been keeping a low profile of late, as I try to reconcile my right of centre political leanings with the three ring circus that has just set up shop in the Oval Office.

I guess my disconnect revolves around the fact that in NZ, the Right of Spectrum political party is more centrist and pragmatic, while the Left of Spectrum party is NZ is driven less by common sense and more by a death grip on a failed ideology.

In the US, the opposite appears to be true.

So, I have to realistically describe myself as a true pragmatist rather than an ideologue. Comes from making an informed judgement based on the presentation of verifiable facts. Sadly, in the world of the internet, and the 24/7 news networks, and where the news has to be first as opposed to accurate, it’s getting harder and harder to be a pragmatist.

We the sheeple?

My hobby is 19th century New Zealand books, the sort of stuff published before our history got sanitised.
Suggestion for the native outfit; forget it. There are too many exceedingly ugly parts to Maori History up to the 19th century. Let’s not remind ourselves of it, and just move on into the 21st century. Okay, European history has its ugly parts, but they are pretty compared to our country’s very early history.

Others had been left behind by a growing political consensus on social liberalism, Gaston said.

“Some people just don’t feel comfortable with the changes such as cultural diversity, some people feel there has been too much focus on the rights or privileges of certain groups at the expense of others”.

They felt that most political leaders no longer represented their concerns.

There were regional differences – in Spain, for example, entrenched social liberalism and the historical legacy of the Franco regime meant populism had largely been driven from the hard left.

And Poland remained strongly pro-European despite the election of a far-right populist government, with national security concerns more influential than economics.

The French case study was the most concerning, Gaston said.

“It is the most febrile, pessimistic, fearful mood, it seems the most deep-seated and it is very difficult to see how we could transform things in France,” she said. “These problems seem to be so deeply embedded that it could probably take a generation to transform the mood in France in any fundamental way.”

  Well what France needs to do is believe in France again. Defend its borders and enforce its laws within the French mainland. Those people who live there need to become French. Or else be sent home.
  That’s just for a start. After that there may have to be mass deportations. I don’t say that lightly. The alternatives are two- fight for your country or surrender.
  France needs to become France and reassert itself.

I saw a movie entitled ‘Hitler-A Career’ made in 1977, but with a massive amount of film clips from his early life right through. Described as-

‘This meticuously assembled fim dissects the Third Reich with a keen analytical blade, charting Hitler’s improbable rise, his mastery of imagery and crowd psychology, and his consummate skill in exploiting the weakness in others’.

Disregarding Cuba and North Korea, such blind fanaticism for one entity on such a huge scale has not been seen before in human history. What did strike me though is what Merkel has unleashed on Germany the past two years, introducing a cult with all the hallmarks of Nazism. Blind obedience, planned breeding, lack of humanity, despising non cult members and quick to use violence. Hitler could see in Islam all he admired and one suspects Merkel has similar feelings. Any German group which starts an overt Nazi party will be (rightly so) squashed by the authorities. Yet an equally evil cult is allowed to openly exist, and is even protected and encouraged by the government. Radical Muslims are the new Brown Shirts, goading Jews to the point they are leaving Germany in numbers. History tells us Germany will see bloodshed in the very near future, nothing can be surer.
