        Well, first totally to hell with “Kimbo’s Law” ! Of course opposition is envisaged, or more, required, in a democracy in general terms. It is the nature of the opposition.
        
        It is pretty clear that what is happening is that there is an organized campaign to attempt to delegitimize Trump as POTUS, and that the majority of the MSM is complicit in this. Calling it the “Deep State” is a bit “Zerohedge” like but the people who envisage themselves as the ruling elite are really upset that their ability to dictate to the unwashed masses has been slightly curtailed and so they are doing their best to upset the democratic norms and actually overthrow the legitimately elected government of the USA.
        
        As for the EO’s, well, the courts have certainly made new legal precedents – according to them it actually matters who issued an EO, for example had Obama (or a putative President Clinton) issued Trump’s EO’s then they would be OK. So the courts can take into account a candidate’s campaign statements to define intent. However the Supreme Court most definitely did not follow that reasoning on the Obamacare case; Obama most definitely stated that the penalties to be exacted under that legislation were NOT a tax and said so on numerous occasions. Yest SCOTUS held that they were a tax and that made them constitutionally valid. Judged honestly by the same standard as Trump’s EO’s, Obamacare’s tax penalties would have been ruled out as unconstitutional. So what the Hawaii and California judges are going against a clear Supreme Court direction and ruling is that as it is Trump, any illegitimate judicial reasoning is OK because Trump.
        
        If this gets to SCOTUS I would doubt that the rulings would stand. It is only a pity that such judges cannot be sanctioned for such blatant political partisanship. They didn’t even make a good attempt to follow established law but pulled fake reasons out their collective arses. Just another sign of the hyper-partisanship and collective illegitimacy of the Democrat opposition.

Sure, “nine lawyers, ten opinions”, but whatever modifications he tries, they will be lining up to challenge them as unconstitutional. Lots of red tape, lots of delays, lots of court stays. Even a guy like Dave Mann on this thread, implacably opposed to Islam and increased Muslim immigration can see this guy seems to be blundering into a swamp…in only his second week.
        
        Will be fascinating to watch where this leads, but that it was challenged so quickly, and as there has already been unintended consequences indicates it was poorly thought out and poorly enacted. And that is how we judge the competence of a politician.

        Well, I’d be honest to say that I’m sorry to have offended you, but I think the substance of my reply is correct. The EO wasn’t a “muslim” ban and to call it so is in fact disengenuous at best.
        
        Would it be fair to say that a Muslim ban should actually try to ban Muslims rather than inhabitants of specific countries; and one that actually banned people from countries that represent a lot less than 50% of the world’s population of Muslims is actually totally ineffective in actually banning Muslims ? And it should be recalled that it was a temporary stop for three months while a policy on enhanced screening was developed and put in place, rather than a complete ban ?
        
        The Judges who issued restraining orders may well want to believe that it was a “Muslim Ban”, but they are acting in extreme bad faith and contrary to judicial ethics to hold so.

        I’m not sure I used the phrase “Muslim ban” in the first instance, although it was the intent – at least as far as some Trump supporters round here claimed. Nonetheless, yes, you are right, in terms of the tight rope Trump was attempting to walk within the boundaries proscribed by the Constitution, no, it was not presented as a “Muslim ban”, and it was drafted in such a way to try and avoid that legal conclusion.
        
        The Judges who issued restraining orders may well want to believe that it was a “Muslim Ban”, but they are acting in extreme bad faith and contrary to judicial ethics to hold so.
        
        Whether that is so or not is a matter of opinion, likely formed as a result of one’s assumptions and presuppositions. Nonetheless, you seem to confirm what I was saying – that whatever Trump did – or will do – on the matter was always likely to end up in court, whether due to the way his EOs are drafted, or how the courts choose to rule, activist intent or not.
        
        So I think we have a meeting of the minds, and even better, a burying of the hatchet. Thanks you Ed.

“Labour is self-destructing”. Battle between Kelvin and Angry over Maori-only prisons is totally ignored.

“Labour is self-destructing part 2”: Labour’s three policies on charter schools are obviously not news. Move on, nothing to see here.

    State housing (new builds) has nothing to do with the rise in house prices, rent or any shortages. The blame lays squarely at the feet of the local councils, and the RMA. Ask anyone who has tried to build a house in the last 10 years how long it takes for consents and approvals and the skyrocketing costs and they will tell you exactly where the problems lie. Yes, this is the fault of the government/s for not putting the boot into the local councils, especially Auckland council. There is something very wrong when a single tree is the only thing standing in the way of a multi dwelling development that could house several lower income families or first time buyers.

I wish someone would tell me why on earth National continue to fund RNZ, TVNZ and Maori TV who just carry on commissioning, programming and broadcasting content that is so often anti-National, and paint a picture of a country in ruins when clearly it is not.

At the very least they could install ‘their people’ at the top and make changes down.

  I couldn’t remember this incident so I looked it up. William Sessions was under investigation by the Dept of Justice for financial irregularities during Bush Snr’s final year. The LA Times reported as – “The Justice Department report found, among other things, that Sessions had engaged in a sham transaction to avoid paying taxes on his use of an FBI limousine to take him to and from work, that he had billed the government for a security fence around his home that provided no security and that he had arranged business trips to places where he could meet with relatives.” Yes, Clinton fired him when he refused to resign.

When he had crooked Hillary Clinton on a sure fire indictment over her many many top secret emails and where at least 30,000 went missing. Comey gave crooked Hillary’s support staff immunity on his investigation into the emails, with no reply required, and even allowed them to destroy their computers. Also at one time Comey had an epiphany on his controversial decision to let crooked Hillary off the hook,and flipped flopped around the reasons . Time ran out for the flip flopper, as it was seen he was in fact out of his depth on how the real FBI should carry out the law. My quick fact checking suggests that he was already in deep trouble for financial irregularities before Clinton was President. He was given a chance to resign and didn’t take it, so he got fired.

As an opponent of Clinton and a luke warm supporter of Trump I wonder who is now capable of conducting a truly independant unbaised investigation into the “Russian “Affair”

I dont believe there would be anyone without a conflict of interest. Therefore if the Administration and the Senate and House want to retain or in my case regain any semblance of credibility they should look off shore to find people who can do the job .

My suggestion would be to look at former members of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the UK some of the leading jurists in the world with wide knowledge and understanding of what constitutes good governance .

Because that is the issue. Good Governance or in the case of the US bad governance worse than that of Mannys Music Parlour.

Mind you most governments dont do good governance ours has probably the best record and that patchy at times but at least they try their best.

Am amused with our media obsession in US Politics.
Hillary would have had Comey in jail by now as she claims that he lost her the election – silly woman.
Was it not revealed that Comey was forced by his own senior executive to reveal more of the Clinton shenanigans before the election ?
And why has no further Clinton’s investigation taken place ?
I am amused that in election years here that our media has become obsessed by these scandals.
It is sad that it has become the subject of fun and satire because the left wing did not like the results.
There is considerable movement throughout the world to get rid of the duly and legally elected US President – because the lefties in the media do not like him. What they would have done in the Clinton mafia had got in – a love fest surely.
I think the figure revealed in the US Press Gallery the other day at their farcical dinner showed that 96% of the members were Democratic Party members shows itself and we are in the thick of it.
No wonder Angry Andy is making no headway even with Jaciderella – who was very uncomfortable in Parliament the other day when Angry made a right twerp of himself. She threw her hands in the air – not in sympathy.

Current net debit $500 BILLION

LMS predicts net debit at $700 BILLION by 2021.

Chances of achieving predicted surplus of $8 BILLION in 20/21 greater than LMS flying unaided to the Moon by that date.

      Actually I don’t think I’m making that error. I admit that my criticism of Trump is quite vehement, but I don’t think it’s based on irrationality. The man quite literally cannot be trusted to speak the truth about anything and his lies are laughably transparent. Also, he changes his tune constantly about almost everything and he has demonstrated a startling ignorance about history and world affairs.

  The funny thing is that Trump is so often right. Take the travel ban, widely vilified in the New Zealand media. Well actually the facts come out that of the thousands of people in the United States under investigation for terrorism links, a full 15% of them are refugees.
  
  This shows that many of these refugees pose a potential risk to the security of the United States and that Trump was quite right to try and institute a travel ban.
  
  It also shows that bringing refugees to the United States or indeed any other Western country is fraught with peril. They pose a security risk, they often don’t assimilate well and they tend to be a burden on the taxpayer with substantial welfare payments.
  
  Trump’s idea of a travel ban and a safe zone in a place like Syria for refugees makes perfect sense.

    Fair enough, Scott. You are entitled to your view, and, in a sense no refugee or immigrants for that matter are risk free. And it is the duty of a government to assess and balance those risks. So if they are doing their job well, “fraught with peril” would be an exaggeration. Put it this way, even in the present circumstances, for the USA – and NZ – there isn’t an immediate concentrated risk and danger to all citizens compared to a select few who would volunteer to re-enter the Pike River Mine.
    
    Nonetheless, as I’ve asked before, I’m intrigued by your attitude, and belief that Christian ethics should be applied in the political realm in the light of the following: –

        Nope, not so at all according to Scripture. Deuteronomy is what Yahweh commended, not necessarily what they did! And I am shocked you are unaware of it.
        
        Israel/Judah was subject to numerous invasions due to her disobedience (Book of Judges, conflict with the Philistines, and later the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities), and rather than being “confident in its identity grounded in God”, she committed continual bouts of idolatry and syncretism. Even when times were good – at the time of David, Solomon, Hezekiah and Josiah, disobedience was rife. Or do I need to remind you of David’s and Solomon’s full history?
        
        Hence the continual negative assessments in the Prophets – and also the “historical” books (called the “Former Prophets” in the Jewish canon), in Judges, Samuel and Kings. Indeed, overall the message of the Old Testament is “when are these disobedient people ever going to be what God made and commanded them to be – a kingdom of priests and holy nation (Exodus 19:6)?”
        
        It was not expected that they would show gratitude to their new host country by terrorising its inhabitants, committing murders and molesting its woman.
        
        But where is the evidence that the majority of refugees do that in the West? I’d suggest the situation is not much different comparing then and now. Yet Yahweh condemns the attitude you are seeking to (mis) read into Scripture and baptise as righteous.
        
        Is intriguing to see someone who is so insistent that Scripture should be applied to pagans (e.g., a prohibition on gay marriage) rationalising, mis-reading and misapplying direct commandments of Scripture, and engaging in false witness against the majority of refugees in the West. Sorry, mate, you are pleasant guy, and I’m glad we are no longer feuding, but the incongruity is glaring. You are entitled to your views, but when you imply they are Christian…nope. Despite that, God gives his commandment to the contrary in an emphatic fashion, reminding us we all require grace and mercy (“And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt”).
        
        I repeat, I am amazed by your willingness to rationalise away God’s command, and try and argue our present situation regarding the treatment of refugees is unique. It is not. Human nature has not changed.

I expect that as more Muslim refugees come to Dunedin then they will agitate for special rights and become more bold and confident in usurping traditional kiwi culture.
      
      Once their numbers are more than 2% in Dunedin, say 2000, then watch out.

      I hope the refugees are a nicer lot than the ones we had in our neighbourhood about 10 years ago. Anything such as bikes, toys, garden tools etc that were not locked away at night disappeared.
      
      The Police would make regular visit to several houses that each had around 2-3 refugees families living there to pick up the stolen gear. It was so bad that they did not bother to hide the stolen bikes etc and left them out in the open on the front lawn.
      
      The older male children suffered from obvious gunshot or explosive wounds and could been seen limping around the streets at night. Rather scary people.
      
      The community got together and held several public meetings with MPs from Labour & National attending. Suddenly the skinnies were gone to god knows where.
      
      Overnight there was nil Crime in the area.

That’s not government money – it is taxpayer money!

Although I am in an industry that gains significantly from this trough, I am very much against it.

For more money to be made available to high-tech industries etc, other industries have to be taxed harder.

That means a baker gets to be less profitable (or maybe driven out of business) to subsidise some web company or such.

If these companies are really worth investing in then let private individuals invest. Don’t get the state involved.

  Should the government be involved in financially helping private business with R & D, promotion etc?
  Does the money come at the expense of businesses that do no directly, or indirectly for that matter, benefit? Using your example, a baker is not levied specifically to pay for a subsidy to a web company.

Whereas Dr Coleman was a GP before entering Parliament, Dr Clark got his PhD for a thesis on the work of German refugee and existentialist thinker Helmut Herbert Hermann Rex. Clark has no previous experience in the health field, and yesterday, it showed.

  Coleman thinks we have a world class Mental Health System.
  Our prisons are full of mental health patients who can’t get treatment.
  Our suicide statistics are woeful.
  Our Mental Health system is broken, and even if there’s a bit more money chucked at it, the problems will not go away until there is a major overhaul.
  If Coleman finds that acceptable he’s a bloody disgrace and should be out of parliament on his ear.

    Have you read the letter the new Deputy AG Rosenstein sent to AG Sessions who subsequently added his agreement in a letter sent to Trump ?
    Rosenstein was almost unanimously endorsed in the vote to accept his nomination –ie. he is a 30 year veteran public servant that both sides respect.
    He clearly sets out the case for Comey breaking rules etc.

    Do you (and others) really believe that firing Comey will somehow end any investigations, seriously ? There’s a Grand Jury (something I don’t think they empanelled for Clinton for some reason) investigating Flynn’s contacts, is that about to stop (BTW, the answer is no).
    
    Rosenstein’s letter sets out absolutely normal reasons to terminate Comey’s appointment. Any successor needs to be approved by the Senate, how is Trump supposed to gain from this ?
    
    Comey had a very low public trust approval (mainly because of the Democratic narrative one must add) and was dragging down trust in the FBI.
    
    I guess if you think Trump is just Hitler in a new guise and any minute a new Reichstag fire will happen and Trump will grab absolute power suddenly, then it makes some kind of twisted sense.
    
    But to most people, it looks an awful lot like just another fake crisis to try to delegitimize Trump .

  I’m no constitutional expert but as it is the legislative branch, and not the executive branch, they can appoint anyone who is not currently in the executive. Like Kenneth Starr was with the Bill Clinton Whitewater investigation…and Starr went where he did with his investigation. So yes…I think so. As log as there is not a conflict of interest, but that can be grey in terms of how and who alleges and determines it.
  
  Also President Johnson appointed a sitting Supreme Court judge (so that is the judicial branch), indeed the Chief Justice, Earl Warren to lead the investigation into the JFK assassination.
  
  Also, btw, I’m no Trump fan but have I got this right in terms of how his partisan critics could have played this:
  
  If Trump did not fire Comey, that is a conflict of interest as Comey allegedly threw Trump’s election opponent, Hillary Clinton under the bus a few days before polling day.
  
  If Trump did fire Comey that is a conflict of interest as he is the head of the law-enforcement agency currently conducting inquiries into alleged Russian activities that benefited Trump’s campaign.
  
  Irrespective of whether this is another “Saturday Night Massacre” (and in that example Nixon wanted a specific special investigator into Watergate gone, not just a department head, so it was more direct),

        Look I liked Comey- at first.It’s obvious Loretta Lynch was being obstructive and not moving forward on Clinton.
        Remember Comey can’t charge anyone- only investigate and present evidence.

It was very kind of the local health board to celebrate in such a generous fashion also by throwing extra money at these bludgers to try and rid their miserable bodies of whatever bugs they host.
I’m sure all the New Zealanders on the surgical waiting lists will be thrilled to bits as well.

Another day in Parliament Question Time and another childish display by Winston Peter’s and you can understand why his MP’s appear like they are lazy and loose on their facts when asking questions. Winston likes respect in Parliament when speaking but does not offer the same accord to others.

  I think I may have mentioned that part of the reason Cecil B DeMille used to do Biblical epics was that it gave him a way to beat the censors staging decadent orgy scenes from the likes of ancient Egypt, Babylon or Rome, often with LA call girls as extras. “Hey, it’s in the Bible, so I gotta show it!”

Japanese generally don’t used shaped charges when they cook.

The one exception would be shaped wasabi paste (see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyXEvjsvU2k) that is a kind of “shaped charge,” even if it’s not the one that you are alluding to.

BTW. What’s for dinner tonight? Japanese?

        Speaking strictly scientifically MM as I always do I understand one of the measures used to access the dementia level in the two study groups was the ability to remember certain words.
        Māori scored very highly in recalling words such as koha and taniwha where as Europeans scored very highly in recalling words such as bribery and bullshit so I think the choice of sampling procedure was flawed and gave a skewed outcome.
        This is common with these sorts of studies.
