  This is not an extreme case but represents the typical patient presenting with TDS. Sadly the disease is usually incurable. A preventative approach is preferred. Clinicians recommend extended exposure to diversity, avoiding university campuses and, in males, having a teenage daughter.

The St Johns ambulance service has said that 75% of their funding comes from the Government and they need to fundraise to meet the shortfall in their operational requirements.

‘the police don’t have to shake a bucket to buy a patrol car’ is an evocative sound bite.

They say $5 mil will do it and as a taxpayer, I believe that this somewhat insignificant sum in the grand scheme of things would be a good investment in a worthy service in the community.

We, as taxpayers, have had a lot more wasted on a lot less for our dollar; only about 30% of the money paid to NZ Post for the cost of the flag referendum, whanau ora, motel accommodation for the homeless who cannot afford cars, bargain!

Teh St Johns CE cam on adn told he they were very happy with the increase to 74% ans as an NGO they do other things and don’t want to be beholdent to Givt masters…..Sainsbury couldnt believe they didnt want more tax payer money…..must be election year!

Disappointed in an interview on TVNZ breakfast this morning.
The government has announced another $60 million to go into double crewing the ambulances (Not disappointed in this, in fact I think it is about time).
The union rep that was fronting it on breakfast could only bleat on about how it was still not enough and that we must ensure that all staff are appropriately trained.
Having worked on the ambulance in Auckland and north of Wellington, albeit as a volunteer, I can assure you that all paid staff, irrespective of whether they have a paramedic degree, are sufficiently trained for the role they are doing.
BUT for a union rep I guess you need to keep bleating and saying it is not enough.

Sorry to post a negative this early in the morning, but she got on my wick and ruined my breakfast… although wish there was an alternative to breakfast show in the morning

  That was also the theme on One News last night, until the bloke from St John said that they don’t NEED two trained paramedics per ambulance. He said they were very grateful to be double-crewed with a paramedic and a trained emergency technician, which is what the Government is proposing.

      Except a lot of those volunteers are employed full time in very productive jobs and would never want to be employed by St John (and certainly not unionised).
      
      Take away the make up and we see the union agenda. It looks just like the fire fighter unions who oppose volunteer rural firefighters.

    I’m all for double staffing on every ambulance, but in some of the dangerous situations ambo staff find themselves working in, gang pads, etc, a bloody huge police dog would be a better ‘partner’ than another human ambo.
    
    St John should be fully funded by the taxpayer. Fabulous service for those in need. Take the money off the long list of unnecessary fripperies our taxes are spent on.

    Exactly, someone needs to drive the ambulance so whether the driver is a fully trained paramedic or not sometimes, surely isn’t a major issue the way the union makes it out to be!

      I live near a large Ambulance station, I have never seen one with lights and sirens on that doesnt have 2 crew.
      Does it mean those with 2 paramedics now will only have one and a ‘plus 1’?

        Most urban ambulances are double-crewed already ztev, by a mix of St John staff and volunteers. The proposal announced yesterday is to fund an additional 375 paid positions to enable all road ambulance callouts nationwide to be double crewed.

        I assume ztev that you live in an Urban area?
        The issue with the single crewing is mostly (if not all) rural.
        Currently in the event of an incident that requires more than a single crew, Fire also respond. In the event that the ambulance requires a driver while the single crewed officer is treating the patient, then a fire officer will drive the ambulance.
        I believe in regards to the levels, that you need to be at least EMT to be a paid with St John, although that may have changed since I left.
        FR was intended as a level for volunteers to give community events some confidence that the person providing support was somewhat trained.

      Actually Niggly, the way it usually works is the crew take turns with the driving and the patients, that way each gets a variety and a smallish break.
      BUT with a Paramedic (or above) and an EMT, where a job required the advanced skills of the paramedic, even if it was not “their’ patient, they would still take the patient.
      This process by the way was what allowed me as a volunteer to be trained to EMT level, by taking the patients that didn’t need the senior crew and supporting on the patients that did.
      
      In regards to the comments above about volunteer crew going paid, there are a number that would love to be paid to work with St John, but agreed there are a larger number of volunteers that want to get out in their free time to help, but would never want to quit their day jobs (me included)

    Volunteering with St John was definitely a highlight of my life.
    I saw a lot of cases that were distressing to me, but then I also had some good cases too, in particular when you see a child/infant going from unable to breathe to being able to breathe comfortably again during the transit to hospital, or seeing the relief on someones face when the pain meds kick in.
    Or the funny ones, like watching a young kid using Entonox for pain relief for the first time and tripping slightly with “auntie” riding along in the ambulance, telling her to enjoy the trip 🙂

The US Left have dedicated watchers who analyse every utterance from the White House, every nuance and every step Trump takes. This material is finely analysed and the ‘team’ spew their decisions on a daily basis, but in such volume that the average US voter just switches off to the messages.     Why don’t we yet have Obama’s college and educational records ? Obama sealed them by executive order, so what’s so incriminating in them that they have never been released ? I guess were Trump to not release normally available information, or even strictly private information like tax returns, the MSM would be OK with that too….oh wait.

    This is where liberals get it wrong. Most people understand that there is a difference between what you can say in private and what you can say in public. What Trump said was a private conversation between him and Billy Bush which they did not realise was being recorded.
    
    Now this is different to the public conversations that liberals have when they mock Trump in the most profane manner on broadcast television. Rap stars talk about “grabbing pussy” all the time in their music. So this is public conversation and should be held to a higher standard.
    
    Unfortunately liberals have no standards and only find standards to bash Republicans with. They are fine with profane SNL skits and profane rap stars but when it comes to a Republican having a private conversation 10 years ago – suddenly they are outraged!

      Don’t disagree with the principle. But would you also agree that there should be a difference between the character and speech, be it public or private, of a rap star and someone who aspires to and then later achieves the office of POTUS?
      
      I mean, sure every campaign the Republican “says” something that supposedly reveals their true character and hatred of poor and/or black and/or Mexican people, and/or women. “That one” said McCain. “47 percent” said Romney. And yes, What Trump said was private, and he was not campaigning at the time (although he has long-stated he was interested in the office of President). Trump supporters don’t care.

  Heh. But most of Mr Little’s rhetoric names speculators, but makes no distinction between speculators and investors.
  
  Speculators – shorter term holds usually, more interested in capital gains than ongoing income from rents. May not place on rental market. Pay tax on capital gains under the two year bright line test, or by falling within the IRD definition of a trader.
  
  Investors – longer term buy and hold usually, interested in both income and eventual capital gain. Pay tax on profit once break even point is reached. Always place on rental market, possibly rent to family members. More likely to pass assets on to family via gifting, trust, inheritance.
  
  Around 80% of landlords have one or two rental properties. (That number is a few years old but likely still in this ballpark.)

  TVNZ’s Katie Bradford tried to make a big issue about this last night (about Alfred Ngaro supposedly dissing Alan Johnstone), but all I saw in her news clips was Alfred Ngaro making some light hearted humorous anecdotes. So was Katie Bradford trying to push fake news?
  
  TVNZ didn’t show the Willie Jackson/Charter Schools comment, so have no idea what (and how) it was said (could have been another joke?), however Guyon Espinner made a big deal about it on Radio NZ this morning (but again no audio, so no idea of context) although Guyon said to Andrew Little isn’t it ironic that Alfred Ngaro has to apologise to Willie Jackson about potentially shutting down his Charter School when Labour’s policy is to shut down his Charter School! Andrew Little’s response to that question? Why of course he only talked about Alfred Ngaro and ignored directly answering Guyon’s question about Labour policy to shut down Charter Schools! Loyal Leftie Lapdog Guyon let him off with an “ok” rather than ask Andrew Little to fully answer the question!

  There is a world of difference between those with allergies and those with an intolerance. I find those with allergies bend over backward to work with you to find something they can eat and those with an intolerance just moan about people not taking into account their latest food fad.
  I have friends in both camps so this is just my observation not scientific at all.

    I accept that some people are struggling because of rising house prices Lance. But don’t forget that many people who already own houses have made a significant, possibly once in a lifetime capital gain, which will give them choices later in life.
    
    Here in Whanganui we are getting an increase in people retiring from Auckland, and bringing their capital gain here where they can buy a very nice property, and perhaps invest in a business or a second property. They’re getting away from traffic jams and the frantic pace of life in Auckland, and finding our cafe culture, arts scene and lower cost of living very much to their liking. I am sure other parts of provincial NZ are experiencing the same.

        Organisations I am involved in are very much focused on looking forward rather than back. People are trying to bring new businesses here, the Government’s Regional Growth Strategy will help, especially with the port revitalisation, and if the Whanganui to Motueka ferry plan comes to fruition, that will be the icing on the cake.

      Myself as one who is gaining economically from the huge increase in house prices I hear your statement.
      However that doesn’t alter the fact that there are a lot of the younger generation who are not impressed by the housing shortage and very high prices.
      National might end up like NZ first and be seen as an old peoples party.
      Make no mistake, the youngsters and those not riding the wave are not voting en mass, but if that were to change, a party that they could identify with would have a significant potential voter base.
      To not recognize this risk is head in the sand politics.
      Alas I am starting to believe National are falling into this category

      The port is pie in the sky. Where is the south island will the ships be allowed to land? Evan if it happens Its now frieght only, role on role off, other than a few fags and a pie no $ to the town.
      No even the most optimistic forecasts has Whanganui’s population increasing to any great extent. Whanganui and partners bullshit everything. They change the way they calculate things each year to make thinks look better, but forget to apply the changes to the last years figures DA. The Council spends beyonds its means and not on core requirements just arts and failed farts. Bed nights in town are dropping, ( as a moving average). Most motels are for sale. The working population is being replaced by retires and those on welfare. The census next year will show this clearly. Not saying its not a nice place to live, people are great but as I said before people/Council/ DHB need to be realistic.

Sound and fury signifying nothing.

How are soundbites from Labour about taxes and landlords going to have any teeth? The wild property speculators are going to have their “loophole” closed. The only obvious loophole is in Labour heads. Where are the mountains of tax draining through loopholes? This is the politics of envy. Even buyers don’t control property prices so who is being envied for what?

People in business as buyers and seller of property are not speculators. They are taxable on their global net income in NZ if, as most do, they have tax-defined residency status. The two year bright line test helps avoid argument over “intention” which can string out a tax matter for years. They are highly unlikely to have any losses. If they do these form part of their net assessable income for the relevant tax year.

Little and Co. must be thinking of the small handful of active kiwis who buy a doer-upper, almost bust their guts and eventually hope to gain either from acquiring an affordable home, renter or flicker. If the place is not kept they will be taxable. The tax law is clear (mostly) and fair (generally) expenditure incurred will be deductable (usually) and any net loss on the property will be lumped in with any other taxable income for that year. Any such loss is a loss of cash (hardship) and under general principles if it’s good enough to tax its right enough to allow the costs. Equity requires that.

Small landlords are already getting a rough time. The denial of the annual depreciation charge affects their net income for the period. They may recover that depreciation on a later sale but meanwhile they have had the enjoyment of the increased income flow. Without that, renting can be a hardship on landlords as their cash flow may be negative. I have seen that among my clients.

Not another 100 pages of tax law over ignorant envy and all its future amendments.

“Little” does not mean diminished responsibility.

  The “loophole” Little refers to so disparagingly is a legal principle administered by the IRD. If he and Labour try to close the “loophole”, they will force rents up, making things tougher for renters.
  
  And all the while the taxpayer will be up for the cost of administering the change in tax rules, plus topping up the incomes of those who cannot afford the increased rents.

      Trying to make targeted laws that have special provisions tends to have poor outcomes.
      
      An example of this is the driving while using a phone law.
      
      The law specifically only applies to mobile phones. If you browse your podcast list while driving using an iphone, you’re pinged. Browse the some podcasts using exactly the same software on an ipod touch (basically an ipod without the ability to communicate with a cell tower) and the law does not apply.
      
      The same sort of issue will apply with rental houses. Closing loop-holes effectively is really hard to do.

    The IRD do not make law. They have the duty of administration of the law as enacted by Parliament. If its not in the Act it’s not legal. Sometimes that relies on interpretation by skilled IRD staff and matters may even be referred to Court for clarification.
    
    Taxes are frequently imposed on the unwilling but the law applies to all. The Commissioner’s duty requires him to assess even the reluctant and collect by force of law if necessary. One of the stupider things that occurs is defaulters without records which is an open invitation for the Commissioner to determine how much tax is due and payable.

  They are asked to advise them first when a do up comes on to the market.

    If these people are unfortunate enough to lose money on their attempt to get ahead I think Little is saying he wants to deny them that loss against other assesable income.
    How are they going to discriminate? Firstly the Commissioner of Inland Revenue can’t do it, that requires an amendment Act by Parliament. Secondly are we going to have rules about how many houses can be sold in a period or the nationality or domicile of the sellers or of the buyers domicile. I could give more but tax law drafting should not be a thing of sport. Even the HR Commissioner could be in on this.
    
    Labour have effectively announced a new tax; Ill defined and bereft of sound advice. (GR?)
    
    Little is little by little being diminished while he confounds.

The other day someone was grizzling that National’s Northern conference wasn’t getting much publicity.
I’m sure all sorts of good stuff was being discussed such as the ambulance double manning, but Associate Housing Minister Alfred Ngaro was the big news.
In this case I think National would rather nobody noticed their conflab & hoped Labour got all the attention.
With John Key & McCully not there the National talent is suddenly looking pretty thin.

WOW. A must read article on the sad truth that so-called “renewable energy” such as wind and solar are neither clean nor green and provide next-to-nothing as far as contributing to the world’s energy consumption. And they never will. Also, construction of these windmills causes more pollution than they are worth. The heavy earth magnets required for these turbines even creates toxic sludge. That’s the dirty little secret.

Here’s a quiz; no conferring. To the nearest whole number, what percentage of the world’s energy consumption was supplied by wind power in 2014, the last year for which there are reliable figures? Was it 20 per cent, 10 per cent or 5 per cent? None of the above: it was 0 per cent. That is to say, to the nearest whole number, there is still no wind power on Earth.

Even put together, wind and photovoltaic solar are supplying less than 1 per cent of global energy demand. From the International Energy Agency’s 2016 Key Renewables Trends, we can see that wind provided 0.46 per cent of global energy consumption in 2014, and solar and tide combined provided 0.35 per cent. Remember this is total energy, not just electricity, which is less than a fifth of all final energy, the rest being the solid, gaseous, and liquid fuels that do the heavy lifting for heat, transport and industry.

Such numbers are not hard to find, but they don’t figure prominently in reports on energy derived from the unreliables lobby (solar and wind). Their trick is to hide behind the statement that close to 14 per cent of the world’s energy is renewable, with the implication that this is wind and solar. In fact the vast majority — three quarters — is biomass (mainly wood), and a very large part of that is ‘traditional biomass’; sticks and logs and dung burned by the poor in their homes to cook with.

Even in rich countries playing with subsidised wind and solar, a huge slug of their renewable energy comes from wood and hydro, the reliable renewables. Meanwhile, world energy demand has been growing at about 2 per cent a year for nearly 40 years. Between 2013 and 2014, again using International Energy Agency data, it grew by just under 2,000 terawatt-hours.

If wind turbines were to supply all of that growth but no more, how many would need to be built each year? The answer is nearly 350,000, since a two-megawatt turbine can produce about 0.005 terawatt-hours per annum. That’s one-and-a-half times as many as have been built in the world since governments started pouring consumer funds into this so-called industry in the early 2000s.

At a density of, very roughly, 50 acres per megawatt, typical for wind farms, that many turbines would require a land area greater than the British Isles, including Ireland. Every year. If we kept this up for 50 years, we would have covered every square mile of a land area the size of Russia with wind farms. Remember, this would be just to fulfil the new demand for energy, not to displace the vast existing supply of energy from fossil fuels, which currently supply 80 per cent of global energy needs.

A two-megawatt wind turbine weighs about 250 tonnes, including the tower, nacelle, rotor and blades. Globally, it takes about half a tonne of coal to make a tonne of steel. Add another 25 tonnes of coal for making the cement and you’re talking 150 tonnes of coal per turbine. Now if we are to build 350,000 wind turbines a year (or a smaller number of bigger ones), just to keep up with increasing energy demand, that will require 50 million tonnes of coal a year. That’s about half the EU’s hard coal–mining output.

Language aficianados in the south won’t be the only ones to have noticed in the Christchurch Press today an ultra-PC headline.

The University of Canterbury has an excellent collection of artefacts from Ancient Greece, which it calls the Logie Collection. Art doesn’t get much more Western.

A headline in the Press today describes the collection as the university’s “finest taonga”. This coincides with the use of “te reo” in text other parts of the newspaper to describe Maori language.

Let’s hope southern Maori reciprocate by, in Maori language, using “English” rather than “reo Ingarihi”.

If it really wants to promote Maori language, the Press could occasionally print a supplement in Maori.

I have enjoyed reading up on Celtic history after being prompted by JJ & Beastly to research “white” history and in particular the Celts.

It’s just been reported a 27yld guy in Aussie killed his mother. On mother’s Day. It was also reported that the police arrested him in his car and took custody of a crossbow. It has been updated. He killed his mum with a pitch fork! nice.

Yes, Theresa May is getting ready to implement her energy price cap, a move that will ‘save’ UK consumers ₤1.7b each year.

Never mind the fact that intervening in markets like this is disastrous as demonstrated when Maduro regulated the price of bottled water below the supply cost.

The energy bill price cap is nonsense to start with, and worse in light of the UK’s Green energy subsidy and taxes which added ₤7.3b to bills last year, and rising to ₤14.3b by the end of this year.

This would be disgraceful from Greens or Labour.

It’s unforgivable from a Conservative government.
