Labour gets ready to ramp up spending what they don’t have.

If Labour’s Grant Robertson is the next Finance Minister he will ditch the new ambitious net debt target set by Steven Joyce as part of the 2017 Budget or the current target. The current target of reducing net debt to 20 per cent of gdp by 2020 will be replaced by getting it down to 10 to 15 per cent by 2025, Joyce recently announced.

“We believe there are infrastructure deficits and social deficits that are going to need some investment before we can get to the 20 per cent target,” Robertson said.

That had been written into its fiscal responsibility code with the Greens, potential coalition partners.

“We will review and revise those targets once we are in Government and we’ll see where we get,” said Robertson.

Right. So flip-flopping before they even take the helm (Such a ghastly thought… I need a nice lie down)

    This isn’t really true, is it? Why “as large as possible”? Are there no choices in spending? No “better value” and “lesser value”?
    
    The real issue here, it seems to me, should be quality of spending, and the problem Labour has (along with porcine partners) is to show its spending is better value. So far, I haven’t seen anything that suggests that. Labour generally and the Greens even more invite us to the trough, where their representatives pig out, as if there is room for all. Thanks, Mike. That’s not what’s going on, and it isn’t a good thing that you make it seem as if that’s what’s happening. It isn’t.

    I don’t believe that Twyford is crazy – he’s batshit cunning and his sarcastic rhetoric finds a ready home with those with an ‘entitlement’ chip on their shoulder. There’s no doubt that he has a lot of mates and fellow travellers in local government providing him with inside information and applying copious red tape to slow down government housing initiatives. He’s a dangerous man and one can only hope that Te Atatu resoundingly rejects him in September.

    There were interesting times in court on Friday, only trouble was no one from MSM seemed to be there so nothing was reported. Cam’s lawyer obviously has put them under strict instructions (including Spanish Bride and Pete Belt) not to report proceedings lest it upsets Colin Craig or the Judge. Seems Whaleoil repeating what is reported by MSM is OK.

I am appalled that (43% (Nat) + 29.5% (Lab) + 13% (Gre) + 10.5% (NZfir)) = 96%) of Kiwis are happy with a center-left, big government, pro-welfare, bureaucrat-rich, regulated system of government.

Being a freelance self-employed individual who earns foreign currency from overseas clients does tend to encourage me to vote for small-government, pro-self-responsibility parties. I would vote Conservative if they got their act together, so I guess I have no choice but to vote Act.
(Maybe I should vote Labour, to hasten the collapse…) (Muhahahahaha!)

  Keep in mind that if you reduce the size of government, then suddenly there are a large number of unemployed people with no skills outside of a sheltered life in the “hallowed halls”, that are unemployable and would be on welfare. Since most of them would be incapable of living off a benefit, having suckled on the over fat public teat for so long, then either benefits need to go up to prop them up or they need to find other, perhaps less legal ways to fund their lifestyles.
  
  Big government is about keeping unemployables that can at least dress semi respectfully, off the street.

    Yes. The Japanese government has used tariffs to prop up rural farming communities for decades, rather than import cheap American rice and throw their aging, rural communities under the bus.
    
    Is it better to pay a man to sweep the streets (he has to get up every morning, put on his uniform and hat, turn up for work and thus maintain his work ethic and sense of civic pride) or is it better to pay him to stay in bed?

      I would say that for the young – yes, need to keep them in the habit of working if you don’t want a life long beneficiary, and that is worth higher support cost in short term to keep them working. For the 60+ year old probably not.

    Artificially creating employment is not solving unemployment because the nett result is the same: people are being paid to produce no value.
    
    When you do it through artificial employment it is worse in that you get a whole bunch of other downsides: traffic jams caused by unproductive people going to work, some effective workers being kept out of the productive sector etc.
    
    The only benefit is “maintaining work ethic”. But if it’s a hopeless job you can’t get fired from, then does it really promote work ethic, or do those workers just grudgingly turn up, do the minimum required to not get yelled at too much aqnd do a crappy job.

      That is why there is so much “thought/attitude control” in Japan (the uniforms, the hats, the armbands, the morning speeches, the 10-minute warm-up exercises, the rituals…) all designed to create a sense of purpose and “team spirit” in an otherwise pointless existence. No wonder young Japanese are heading to the cities and/or dropping out of the rat-race.

        I am genuinely curious: does all the exercise and uniforms really help people get back on their own two feet and re-enter productive work?
        
        If peoplee just end up doing their artificial job for their whole life then not much was gained. It only works if they do this for a while, then find themselves a “real” job.
        
        We have very different cultures (West vs Japan) with Japan having a longer history of deference to authority, so we can expect different outcomes for the same actions, but it would still be interesting to know if it even works in Japan.

        Very interesting questions raised by Odakyu-sen.
        
        Applying to NZ, would it have been cheaper for the NZ Government to somehow subsidise timber manufacturing in the North Island pine regions rather than pay for:
        
        1. The imprisonment of the now unemployed young locals who joined gangs and were caught breaking the law?
        
        2. The social costs of the drug trading and general crime of gangs made up mostly of young men who otherwise might have worked gainfully in mills?
        
        3. The gangsters’ children?
        
        When I say somehow subsidise, perhaps this could be an economic policy that did not cause an inflated currency exchange rate, which tends to drive overseas processing of resources.

        The uniforms and group work do work in well with Japanese culture.
        Group identity, group membership, a sense of “belonging” and validation are particularly important in Polynesian cultures, so I think that a lot of the Japanese techniques would work well in a Maori setting.

        Do robots wipe out jobs, or just change them, with new products and cheaper products creating new demand?
        
        When the motor industry arose it created far more jobs than had been provided by horses (teamsters, coach drivers, grooms, stable hands, coach builders).
        
        Globalisation has been a far bigger job killer in the West than automation.

    Agreed Kimbo and let’s face it the Nats have never been right wing – possibly right of centre under Shipley and Holland but that’s as far as they’ve got to. Act is a natural home for right wingers but Act desperately needs a charismatic leader to sell their message. I’m a true blue centrist Nat supporter but we really need a strong Act party shoring up the right wing of an effective coalition government to keep the bastards honest.

      Thanks for the response, but sorry, GazzaW, I think that a “great white hope” to lead ACT is a chimera. Admittedly I am a former Labour Party member who has found a happy political home voting for a pragmatic centrist National government in my wiser older age.
      
      But ACT, IMHO, have had capable leaders, including Brash, Whyte and now Seymour, albeit they have been politically naive at times. Nonetheless, they have championed the ACT philosophy and explained it well.
      
      Despite his enthusiasm, high profile and attempt to go a populist route to widen the voter-base, Hide made some tactical mistakes in his time, and they had policy and personal life incongruence issues (including Hide taking perks, Donna Awatere-Huata and David Garrett) that damaged their brand. But all their leaders have been capable. That isn’t their problem.
      
      Even before Prebble the tide was going out. Kiwis aren’t buying the ACT policies, indeed they have tin ear for their economic prescription when it comes to the welfare state.

Was wondering just how many so called defacto leaders the NZ Lie-bour Party has, and what is their plan for latest political football on immigration. A few weeks ago Angry Andy Little or mr 7% to his joined at the hip green party,said if elected they would slash immigration to the tune “of tens of thousands”,and make sure they wouldn’t get into NZ. On Lie-bour/Green Party channel TVNZ a guy called Twyford, who hates anyone with a chinese name ,who buys a residential property,contradicted Angry Andy Little ,and said they would bring in people to build houses. Seems as usual Liebour/Green party dont know their arse from their elbow.Sounds like Twyford has out flap jawed Mr 7%.To think that pack of losers want to run NZ,in fact all the running they can do is from the mouth ,with verbal diarrhea.

FYI: two stories the NZ media won’t cover:

1) The Saudis put out the red carpet for President Trump and the USA’s concrete and substantive plans to support the Arab coalition for peace and against terrorism. There was no apologizing or bowing. Peace through strength = Trump. #Winning

2) Kim Dotcom admits he was involved with Seth Rich who was the ‘leaker’ who provided Wikileaks the DNC emails. (not da Russkies) Kim is checking with his lawyers and will supposedly make more statements and/or provide on Tuesday. Seth Rich was murdered. Most likely by someone in Clinton’s camp. Would be very interesting if that indeed could be proved… maybe a special counsel can investigate…

… The fund’s senior researchers Matthew Wilson and Craig Shephard found that about half of all the nation’s mortgage debt was in the hands of borrowers whose debt was more than four times larger than their gross income.

The same borrowers had paid off less than half of their loans, the team found, based on data from several official and private sector sources that adjusted for changes in incomes and the collateral values of their homes.

The average loan-to-income ratio of these heavily indebted households was 6.4, or more than double the old banking “rule of thumb” that mortgage managers didn’t lend more than three times a household’s income “unless they were doctors”.

…Almost a third of the most highly geared borrowers were professionals with pre-tax incomes of more than $250,000. While they accounted for just 2 per cent of total households, they held 17 per cent of mortgage debt, and an average mortgage worth $1.6 million. Half of these borrowers had an investment property loan.

Other young households – dubbed “pretenders” because they had taken on large debts relative to their incomes – were also at risk. This group tended to have average incomes of $110,000 but an average mortgage that was an “eye-watering” 7.4 times larger at $840,000.

So while the Greens and other eco-fascists want to send us back to those caves, I’m thankful for technological advancements like fracking, shale oil and methane hydrates aka ‘flammable ice’ that promise us hydrocarbon-based energy for centuries to come.

    Not sure that an evolution model fits that well (at least in the way you are using it). Over the last 1000 years, cultures have undergone dramatic change internally as a result of developments in science and technology and factors such as more universal education. You could talk about mutation as easily as natural selection. Culturally, I probably have as much in common with someone my age doing a similar job in Moscow or Rio than my great, great, grandfather, say.
    
    I’m also not sure that diversity is driven by “selection pressure being reduced” (in fact, I’m not sure what you mean by that). Migration seems a more important factor, and when you get numbers of people from one “culture” moving to other places, you get an increase in diversity – whether it’s early homo sapiens entering Neanderthal parts of Europe, European colonization of various parts of the world, diverse migration (including “forced” migration) into place like the USA, or the trends we see in immigration now.

Martyn Matthews position as Auditor General looks increasingly tenuous.
The MOT Chief Legal Advisor wrote to him as CEO in 2014, pointing out issues with fraudster Harrison’s activities and asking for help to get answers out of her. Matthews has said he investigated the situation thoroughly. It now appears he responded saying he has decided not to pursue the matter as it would display a ‘lack of trust’.
I’m no fan of Red Radio but good on them for carrying on this investigation.

  The simple fact that he fobbed off the Australian Federal police shows he is incompetent to be NZ’s Auditor General.
  
  I was speaking to a (lawyer ) mate in Aussie recently. There was big whistle though the teeth when I told him of this. He was flabbergasted. He has worked in Canberra for the Federal government.
  The Australian Federal Police do not reach out overseas for student loans and traffic fines. This was serious.
  Mathews had already worked for 18 years at The Audit office and is a Fellow of the Institute of Accountants. He should be more aware. A Fellow is an advanced position.
  
  If boofhead Mathews does not see the overseas reach out by a foreign police force as serious then no-one can take this idiot seriously as top auditor looking at the proprietary of the billions of dollars of taxpayers money.
  
  He did spend 10 years as Chief executive of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage so this may have softened his head.
  
  Has it been fully investigated that Martin/Martyn Mathews clearly did not engage in inappropriate activity with Joanne Sharp/Harrison or whatever her name finally ends up as > Maybe Joanne (Bill) Liu?

    I think Mr Matthews might have a huge knowledge of “The Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi”.
    There has to be some reason that he retains employment at the expense of the taxpayer.
    If you know a better reason than that set out above, hit me with it.
    The matters highlighted by Howitis disclose a repugnant state of affairs.
    In the whole scheme of things an error at NZTA of $1.8mil can be forgiven. An error of $180,000,000 is totally and completely unacceptable.

The conservative party in the UK, which will probably win the election, has set out an extraordinarily draconian set of proposals for censorship and limitation of free speech in their election manifesto. They want full time surveillance of all internet browsing and they propose to redesign the internet protocols to make it impossible to dodge this. They want government control over all news, both on and off the internet, ostensibly to combat fake news. They already have the worlds most intensive webcam surveillance system and they have shown a dangerous tendency to arrest and jail people for thought crimes. It is a horrific high tech police state in the making.

And if I were in the UK I’d probably vote for them anyway, because Labour are the only viable alternative and they are even worse.

A UK university* is removing a dedicated prayer space for Muslims, and taking flak from the Muslim students.

Fair enough in my view. The university already offers a Multi-Faith Centre on campus, so I don’t see why their Muslim students should have dedicated facilities.

The space is to be turned into an access way to the library. Quite fitting.

*It’s the University of East Anglia. I keep an eye on the their Climatic Research Unit as they indulged in a corruption of science which led to the term ‘Climategate’

The awful awful journalism by some people….they may have passed english but not much else. Critical thinking is severely lacking and these people just have no practical understanding such as the concept of value.

eg, herald are running a major investigation comparing the price of water paid by water bottling companies vs the price paid by households.

The herald concludes that water bottlers pay virtually nothing for water and households pay huge amounts.

But, my understanding is that households pay for the distribution network rather than the water.

So, it makes the heralds entire case rubbish because the water bottling companies would pay the exact same price for the water to be piped to them — but they just extract from source to avoid this cost.

But other than CEOs, and Heads of Departments, government employees, just like ones in the private sector, don’t get thrown under the bus by revealing their names to the public. Discipline in house? The multiculturists have begun softening Southland up for Muslim refugees. For Southland Times readers, someone in Dunedin interviews Muslim refugees there.
The reporter, Richard Davison, seems to be the Fairfax NZ man in Otago.

The Red Cross now hopes to replicate in Southland the community help (200 or so volunteers) that it has used in Dunedin.

There has been some resistance in Southland to the Immigration Department’s declaration that refugees would be sent there to settle.

Meanwhile, in a letter to the Christchurch Press, Donna Miles-Mojab, the political activist who was born a Muslim in Britain to Iranian parents, seeks tolerance for Muslims in Canterbury. In the letter she talks of people being called “terrorist b-” in the street. She asks:

“If we don’t blame Christianity for terrorist attacks carried out by Christians then why Muslims for terrorist attacks carried out by Muslims?”

This argument has been heard before: Islam isn’t to blame for ISIL or the Muslim Brotherhood or Al Qaeda.

Miles-Mojab in an article on the Daily Blog on 2 June 2015, said:

”I believe that the greatest threats to our freedom of speech are posed by the Western governments who, under the guise of national security and through greater surveillance, limit our privacy and our ability to speak freely without intimidation and fear.”

Miles-Mojab doesn’t appear to have any problem getting her views published in NZ.

The irony in Miles-Mohab’s letter is that in muslim countries those same freedoms are harshly suppressed and that in western democracy’s followers of Islam enjoy considerably more freedom of speech than they have in their home countries.
Western nations are providing considerable resources in terms of homes and benefits to refugee’s and in Miles-Mohab’s letter there is no acknowledgement of that generosity.

At this time, the five banks involved don’t know the exact nature of the tax proposed (because it has not yet passed parliament nor can the Aussie Treasury supply the actual details), but Westpac’s response is an early estimate based on politician statements, and part of its campaign to push back at the move. How it will impact its New Zealand operations is also opaque. No estimates have yet come from any other of the five banks targeted by the tax.

So the Aussie banks are a bit pissed. Look at the tax this way. The Banks have escaped paying GST so this makes up for all the non GST component of their turnover.

    I always find it amusing stephie how I call people sheeple and idiots and call Jewish leaders out for being the murderous thugs they truly in fact actually are and say all sorts of other things specifically designed to discomfort people because the truths I offer happen to be important as well as relevant, while shocking if you happen to be a complacent sheeple. And yet you always attract far far far far more downticks than I do, just by being yourself.
    
    And you can tell that because people always heavily mark you down, no matter what subject you’re discussing. All. The. Time.
    
    Isn’t that funny.
