The U.S. Conference of Mayors said its members would carry on addressing climate change. William Peduto, the mayor of Pittsburgh, the city Trump had mentioned in his speech, said, “President Trump’s decision is disastrous for our planet, for cities such as Pittsburgh.”

Business leaders also rebuffed the president, with Apple, Google, Twitter, Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, Microsoft and IBM all declaring climate change an “urgent” threat. They called Trump “short-sighted” and wrong.”

Goldman Sachs’s chief executive first ever tweet labelled Trump’s decision “a setback for the U.S.’s leadership position in the world.”

Earlier, Tesla’s Elon Musk and Disney’s Robert Iger announced their resignations from Trump’s Business Council.

Michael Liebreich, founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, tweeted that “it’s no longer possible to pretend Trump is anything other than a buffoon,” before adding, “Far from encouraging other countries to quit Paris, it will strengthen their resolve … So pulling out of Paris stiffens everyone else’s resolve to act on climate, marginalizing Trump and the anti-climate headbangers.”

The clean energy revolution has passed the tipping point. Change is coming, faster than many people predicted. And Donald and his climate deniers will be left standing on the sidelines to watch and wonder how they became so irrelevant in the most important debate of our time.

  As the Trump administration pushes for more polluting fossil fuels, clean energy has grown in leaps and bounds around the world.
  
  Newly installed renewable power capacity set new records in 2016, with 161 gigawatts added, according to the annual Renewables Global Status Report by the Paris-based Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) released Tuesday.
  
  Total capacity increased by almost 9 percent from 2015, reaching a cumulative capacity of 2,017 gigawatts, with solar photovoltaic accounting for around 47 percent of the capacity added, followed by wind power at 34 percent and hydropower at 15.5 percent.

        SPC: Cost competitive…. when you add in subsidies.
        
        The problem with wind (and PV) is that they don’t generate all the time. Thus for every MW of wind or PV you still need to build a MW of thermal generation to pick up the slack.
        
        Having to rely on subsidies is not sustainable.
        
        Having to build twice as many generation plants is also not sustainable.

    I used to think small pebble reactors myself but then I realised the thing sbout nuclear is the waste and the cost of storage thereof. Because that destroys the business case. It has to. Because how the hell does the entity who operates the station and takes all the revenue possibly put aside enough capital during the time of operation, lets say 40-50 years, to pay for storing the waste for the next say, ten thousand years?
    
    And the answer is of course, it doesn’t.
    
    So the problem is, who the fuck is going to pay for doing that?
    
    And we all know the answer to that, don’t we.
    
    So obviously, the politicians have taken their cut toward their pensions or their re-election and left the taxpayer and the next five hundred generations holding the bag.
    
    If that’s not what was happened, then WTF has happened?

      Nuclear waste issue is a failure of rational politics, not a real technological issue.
      
      Go out to the abyssal plains of major oceans (Indian and Pacific) 1000’s of km from nearest land, use oil rigs to drill holes 1000’s of m below the sea bed, drop waste into these holes and cap with concrete. There is no chance of any detectable leak in next 10’s of thousands of years.

        You are joking I assume. Apart from the fact it takes a fuck of a lot just to drill a hole a few inches in diameter that deep, even if you get around that you then have the issue of continental shift not to mention earthquakes cracking open the seal and you then have the problem of corrosive seawater coming into contact with said radiation. And contrary to popular belief, radiation does not dilute.
        
        Think again UN.
        
        And even if your scheme holds water, how come this isn’t what they do now?

      Again LFTR has some of the answer.
      
      Uranium reactors only use a small % of the fuel before the fuel has to be reprocessed. LFTR generates way, way, less waste than uranium-based reactors.

        Right, let’s explain this in a simpler way – with deaths. In the past there were mostly “natural” deaths compared to “man-made” deaths (i.e., murder).
        
        In a war there are a lot more deaths. The increase is due to “man-made” deaths. This does not mean that “natural” deaths have stopped.
        
        So just because there were (in the past) “natural” deaths, there are currently “natural” deaths, and there will (in the future) be “natural” deaths, DOES NOT mean we shouldn’t try and stop “man-made” deaths.

        We do fully understand the cause of man made death. Nobody is trying to create causality out of an observable correlation here. If you tell me war is caused by food shortages and only food shortages I’ll say you are wrong, there are other factors. As a straw man your analogy is pathetic. Do try harder to try and simplify something as complex as climate because like CO2 being causal because that’s easily digestible by the masses, your example is equally flawed.

        – consequences of excessive and inadequately-selective immigration; and
        – policies or administrative actions that entrench separatism between Maori and Caucasians.

        The Trump administration has bit the bullet, and to the outraged dismay of the political left has withdrawn from the Paris accords. That agreement, which went into effect on November 4, 2016, just days before Donald Trump’s election is a complex affair in which the United States made the key “voluntary” commitment to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions in the next decade by about a quarter of their 2005 rate, with further reductions to come thereafter. At the recent meeting of the G-7, Trump was the lone holdout against a ringing endorsement of the agreement. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, joined by a cast of thousands, has denounced Trump and the United States for leaving the fold.
        
        A word of dissent is very much in order. The President’s instincts were spot on. Notwithstanding the furor, he was right to withdraw the United States from the accords. Ironically, the best reasons for getting out of the accords are the evident weaknesses in the reasons that a wide range of businesses and environmental groups offer for staying in.

I know that art is supposed to “challenge the boundaries” and all that stuff but this just seems a bit creepy to me bordering on her needing to visit the psychiatrist.
You have to wonder what’s next, painting a picture with shit to protest the lack of free toilet paper hand outs from the government maybe.

  Men need more calories. That is basic biology. Let’s say $1 a day. That’s $365 per year.

    You don’t know what you’re crapping on about.
    If ACT get 1.7% of the votes they’ll get a second MP (assuming Seymour wins Epsom). At 2.5% they get a third one.
    None of these come at the expense of National MPs as their quota will be determined by National’s share of the total vote. The ACT MPs, like Peter Dunne if he wins Ohariu, are additional.

    Not correct. They add two extra seats that National would not get.
    
    Nationals seats are determined by its overall party vote. Giving away Epsom does not reduce the number of National MP’s. They just get them on the list instead.
    
    So Seymour getting Epsom is a plus for National, especially if Act’s party vote is more than 1.4% in which case there will be an additional Act MP through the list.

      The issue here is the 5% threshold. If ACT has enough party votes to win two seats, but does not win an electorate it will have nil MP’s in Parliament. In other words these right leaning party votes are down the drain. If David retains Epsom and there is sufficient party vote for a second MP then ACT’s highest placed list candidate (excluding any who have become electorate MP’s) will enter Parliament. Similar for Peter Dunne. National’s fear is some of David’s and Peter Dunne’s party votes could be ‘wasted’.

Seymour is scared the 1% of our population which is Muslim will become ‘radicalised’ if they are put in the spotlight. Otherwise known as “the grassroots”, which is where rugby exists in the first instance, rather than in the rarefied realm of the electronic and celebrity-driven media. If you are a true rugby fan you do belong to a club and invariably they have Sky TV.

So all those Sky dishes in the “poor”areas are a mirage and none of them are actually hooked up to Sky. Sky costs around $100 a month $1200 a year. So tell me what percentage of the household income is that. Say 2 on benefits at and this is a guess total $800 a week with all the add ons so $40K pa so Sky is 3%. Well if I was struggling to feed my kids Sky would be gone to do so.

But then I care about my kids and dont see them as a bloody nusiance .

The structure of criminal justice is a disaster. It would be impossible to get innocent people into prison if scientific principles concerning forensics, and particularly a rational view of the logistics of the crime were followed.

This would have avoided the infinite outrage of the imprisonment of Arthur Thomas, David Tamihere, Teina Pora, David Bain, Mark lundy and the prosecution of Ewen MacDonald.

Last evening the sideline expertise was in the hands of Jeff Wilson, John Kirwan, Andrew Mefhtens and Justin Marshall. No forwards to provide interpretations of forward play; analytical forwards (a contradiction in terms?) were also noticeable by their absence at the previous game.

Has the influence of Dame Susan Devoy now come to dominate the inner sporting sanctum of Sky TV? Or of the NZRFU?

I see this latest crisis as yet another desperate attempt by the Three Rogue States to prove that they are still the biggest and baddest guy on the block and, just like the previous ones, I think that it will fail. For example, I just don’t see the Qataris shutting down al-Jazeera, one of their most powerful “weapons”. Nor do I see them breaking all diplomatic relations with Iran as those two states are joined at the hip by the immense South Pars gas condensate field. The immense wealth of the Qataris also means that they have very powerful supporters worldwide who right now, as I write these lines, are probably on the phone making calls to very influential people and indicating to them in no unclear terms that Qatar is not to be messed with.

If anything this crisis will only serve to push Qatar further into the warm embrace of other countries, including Russia and Iran, and it will further weaken the Saudis.

The Three Rogue States have the same problem: their military capability to threaten, bully or punish is rapidly eroding and fewer and fewer countries out there fear them. Their biggest mistake is that instead of trying to adapt their policies to this new reality, they always chose to double-down over and over again even though they fail each time, making them look even weaker and their initial predicament even worse. This is a very dangerous downward spiral and yet the Three Rogue States seem unable to devise any other policy.

Labour owes it’s remarkable good fortune in the election not to the efforts of Corbyn, but more to the dissatisfaction of the young, unhappy with Brexit.
It was a classic knee jerk reaction that almost toppled the government, anger and resentment that Labour were quick to exploit. I doubt whether the same result could be replicated now that the young have had their say.
With regard to the leadership, who would want it with such a tiny majority to work with, it would be almost a death wish to take it on at the moment.
Challengers will let May do the heavy lifting brokering Brexit and then swoop in once the dirty work has been done.

Corbyn ran a good campaign. May was a disaster – she barely campaigned at all, treating the voters and democratic process with contempt.
Also Labours manifesto offered a lot of lollies to capture the youth vote.
Ultimately, Corbyn came across as human and passionate. You may not agree with what he was saying, but he said it with conviction.

It looks like James Comey is going to be spending quite a bit of time in Court in the near future. First off the rank is the Montgomery case ( the whistleblower who is suing him. The Judge has already been appointed for this case ).
Then I wonder if he will be convicted for doing the same thing General David Petraeus was convicted for — Petraeus was convicted for allowing work related information to get to his writer girlfriend. Comey allowed work related memos/information to get to the NYT ( he admitted this in his testimony last week) . Hard to see any difference between the two situations.
It looks like he is in clear violation of his employment agreement with the FBI …..the list goes on.

On a more amusing note, it is hilarious to see the likes on NZ rugby journalists and personalities (Gregor Paul, Richard Loe, Sir John Kirwan) criticise the supposedly “stodgy” approach of the Lions last night and/or the refereeing which allegedly assisted them.

From a rugby purists point of view, last night’s win over a previously unbeaten team was impressive, doubly so given the pressure the touring party was under after the first two unsatisfactory performances. A Lions tour is the most difficult assignment in rugby, including the fact that every four years they have to start from scratch, and meld together otherwise implacable international opponents. That made it an especially classy and gutsy effort last night, and outstanding for rugby. This tour is alive, and the Lions not going to be easy-beats in the test series. Indeed, while they may be up against a very great All Black team, the Lions are in with a shot. Bring it on!!

    Just out of interest, how and/or why was it a more “disgraceful Refereeing performance” than, say, the France vs NZ quarter-final of 2007. and also the 2011 Australia vs South Africa quarter-final? The ref “froze” in all three, and one side then failed to manage him sufficiently.
    
    Also, always thought the Lions in the 1st test of 1993 were hard-done by. Ref gave a try to Frank Bunce in the first minute when he almost certainly had not forced the ball, then, with the Lions ahead, gave an incomprehensible last minute penalty that Grant Fox then goaled for an All Black win. As the series was won 2-1 by NZ, you could argue the effects were monumental (although the psychology for each subsequent game was different, so the ABs may not as lost as they did so badly in the 2nd test if they were “playing for their lives”.

Do the tentacles of Frau Merkel extend to remote Southland in NZ?

Today on the Leftist-PC Sunday Morning show of Radio NZ, one interviewee was the manager of the Invercargill Licensing Trust’s Speights Alehouse.

He was talking about his efforts to provide a welcome to Southland for refugees, and to counter-act some of the local opposition that has been expressed to the Immigration Department declaring that refugees would be directed to Southland.

In the interview, the Southland welcomer mentioned that a friend in Germany was operating a similar operation to welcome refugees to that country.

The Radio NZ programme also mentioned that the Southland Chamber of Commerce was touting that there are plenty of jobs in Southland.

Let’s not hear any bitching from Southland, then if the next recession, or a setback to the aluminium smelter, whack the local job market.

In the meantime, you have to wonder whether the local licensing trust is looking for low-price labour.

  The son of a good friend of mine operates a youth hostel in Germany (Hamburg).
  
  The actions of hard core refugees are beyond belief and they turning out to be very dangerous. They ignore German law and take over neighbourhoods by their numbers to impose their own rule of law.
  
  In a few years Germany will be top heavy with Muslims who are slowly gaining positions of authority. We must be very careful down here and restrict who we allow in here.

The Associate Health Minister, Peter Dunne, says he is hoping to persuade Green MP Julie Anne Genter that her proposed legislation on medicinal cannabis is unworkable.

Ms Genter’s bill, which is due to be debated in Parliament in the next few weeks, makes it legal for people suffering from a terminal illness or debilitating condition to use cannabis or cannabis products with the support of a GP.

It also allows doctors to permit qualifying patients to grow and possess cannabis.

Mr Dunne has told the TV3 programme The Nation he has major reservations about it.

“At this stage I’m still in discussion with Julie-Anne about some provisions in her bill,” he says.

“I think that the bill in one sense is unworkable, I think in another sense actually changes the whole ball game in a way that’s not what was intended.”

Mr Dunne said the bill potentially legalised cannabis across the board, and he didn’t believe that was what the public wanted.

Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse was surprisingly sound on TVNZ’s Sunday programme tonight.

I’ve been strongly critical of Woodhouse, but I thought he was quite good when talking to TVNZ about ethnic restaurants’ problems on visas for staff.

The Indian restaurant owners pretty much shot themselves down, I thought. It was clear that they could not train up NZ staff then expect them to work at the low wages they now pay their ethnic staff.

If that’s the case, let them disappear. Only the celebrity airheads will care. As for tourism, do visitors come to NZ for the Indian cuisine? surely not.

It’s probably that WordPress only updates your count visible to you either when the day turns or when you logoff. I don’t know, I don’t care enough to work out what precisely it does, but that’s what it does.

… One grandfather who feels that way is Hugh Pavletich, who had been campaigning for sweeping reform of housing policy for more than a decade as he’s watched house prices spiral up and up.

“People are now actually hostile to housing inflation,” he says. “It was all fun in the beginning, and for the first few years, until the kids came knocking on the door wanting $100,000 or $200,000 for the deposit on a home.”

Pavletich calls housing wealth “illusory” except for a small proportion of society including property speculators and investors, real estate agents, banks, and retirees able to sell up in Auckland and relocate to the provinces.

For everyone else, he says: “I refer to it as a poverty creation programme.”

The young are either trapped into lifelong renting, or forced to take on gigantic mortgages, and simple things like moving house become costly and difficult in a “high multiple” housing market, Pavletich says. … read more via hyperlink above …
