Another day and another day of CNN talking about Russia. The big narrative is that the election was hacked by the Russians which explains why the Democrats lost. And the really big story is that Donald Trump is a Manchurian candidate, a traitor to his country, who deliberately colluded with the Russians to win the election.

Does anyone actually believe that Donald Trump is a traitor to his country in league with the Russians? Does anyone actually believe that?

Or is it just a convenient narrative to try and bring down Donald Trump who liberals hate?

I’d be interested if anyone actually believes that Donald Trump betrayed his country to the Russians to win the election? I don’t think the Democrats actually believe it. They just want to bring down Donald Trump.

    It’s the government’s policy to build loss making vanity projects rather than prioritising safety upgrades that would be quicker and a fraction of the price.
    
    Those skewed priorities mean they bear some responsibility when accidents like this occur, and should grow a spine and apologise or fix the issues.

      They take credit for zero road deaths when it ‘s actually a matter of chance and circumstance. They use a zero toll to justify their ridiculous part time enforcement of arbitrary speed limits , so yes why not ask when there’s horrendous death and destruction they must be asked ,why ?
      
      If they want credit when things go well , they must accept criticism when things go badly.
      
      The real point here is they have no real influence on what happpens on all the roads across the whole country …….speed is not the only factor in fatalities as most fatalities occur below the posted speed limit.
      
      Southern police were pleased with the effect of their “zero tolerance” blitz on speed this weekend, but hoped the road toll would stay low as people returned home after long weekend marked by heavy rain, surface flooding and snow.

  With few exceptions, NZ roads are safe–provided that you drive to the conditions.
  
  The only inherently unsafe sealed road I have driven on in this country is the Akatawara road, and even its failing could be mitigated with Japanese-style convex mirrors on the corners to give indications of oncoming traffic to prevent head-on crashes.

      The next time I drive on the Akatawara Road (no wider than a suburban driveway in many places) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bu9gxonaco), it will be at night, as it will be much safer than during the day.
      
      The reason for this is that at night, you can see the light from oncoming car headlights reflected off the corner trees and embankments long before the vehicle is in line of sight.

    The easiest way of making Akatarawa Road safer is to install a toll road system – you have to pay a toll or get an infringement notice if you enter the road and exit it at the other end less than two hours later. This will reduce the through traffic for which the road was not intended.

  Can you explain why the thousands of people who drive that road every day don’t die or crash? Could it be that other variables play a much greater role in fatal crashes?

      There is one difference Chuck Winston does not negotiate for his Party he does it for himself and his ego so it will be no different from the past Winston First, then what he can get for his Party. So if you think that Bill English has to negotiate in good faith maybe you might and I say might be able to persuade Winston to do the same.         Happy, I have more confidence in English’s negotiation skills than you have. Little was asked about a referendum on the anti-smacking law. He was very negative. I cannot remember his exact words. When English was asked he gave the sensible answer that he was not going to enter into coalition arrangements 3 months out from the election.

    Parents moving their children to another school could be because they want their children to be in a class where the teacher doesn’t have to spend most of the day dealing with kids who can’t speak English, don’t have the basics in literacy or numeracy and often have huge social issues at home. I don’t know whether the Lions will prevail against the ABs this weekend, but either way nobody could accuse them of playing scintillating rugby.
By the sounds of things it’s going to be wet in Auckland this week too.
For hard out supporters of either side eighty minutes of dour grind may be acceptable, but for everyone else it’s pretty tedious. As it is crowd numbers are dwindling away, both at the ground and via Sky.

  It is international TV spectators in the South African and UK timezone who fund the (‘scuse the pun) lions share of NZ pro rugby via Sky TV subscriptions and indirectly attracting big sponsors, not the relatively small domestic TV market, much less those who go to the games . Even big ticket events such as the 2011 RWC and once-in-twelve-years Lions tours are made viable but the large influx of overseas supporters. Moan all you want about “dour” and “tedious” rugby. The Wallabies are neither of those, but the Bledisloe Cup is being slowly devalued as it is not…competitive. That is the first prerequisite for a quality product.
  
  Good on the Lions, after the debacle of 2005 for coming here, and despite losing some midweek games (and their dirt trackers may still drop the matches to the Chiefs and Hurricanes), for their #1 team squeezing the life out of a previously unbeaten Crusaders, and clinically dismantling the Maori. From a rugby purists point of view those two wins were impressive, interesting and worth the watch, with a fascinating contrast in styles in prospect for the test matches.
  
  With good reason Lions supporters and fans out here spending their GBP will be heartened, and the prospect of a good show down against the All Blacks will make their investment worthwhile. If I was Warren Gatland, and hearing Kiwi rugby media and fans grizzling about the supposed lack of entertainment I’d be overjoyed, as it means he is on track to at least have a shot. Especially as, before the Crusaders game everyone was moaning his team would struggle against New Zealand teams. Nope. Not on the evidence of the last two Saturdays.

Steve Tew justified the NZRU approving the expansion of the Super Rugby teams, particularly that sixth team in South Africa as it would significantly boost subscriber numbers and the overall profits to be divided up, yet present no costs to NZ rugby. And I think that out of the three SANZAR nations, the Saffers still contribute much more of the revenue to Sky compared to Aussie and NZ.

♦ 'investors' in the sector have profited by effectively taking money from the pockets of the masses

    Your point is irrelevant. By all means berate it’s cost effectiveness, visual pollution etc.
    But any generator can catch fire. There is magnetic and electrical energy that just wants to heat something up. With a bit of luck most of the time that is channeled harmlessly away into electric current and carried to distant locals to be ultimately expended as heat (through various means).
    However if the wingdings break down, gear boxes fail etc then the energy gets dissipated in the generator. e.g in hydro dams there is often an entire level (as in a floor) of fire extinguishers that dump into the windings in case of fire.

  Trending towards renewable energy is definitely a viable option – not because of global warming but because we will be saving money by doing so.
  I agree wind turbines are simply not the way to go, as kleva kiwi has mentioned nuclear power, geothermal and hydropower is the way to go. It’s been proven to work and will continue to work. Wind turbines are simply too expensive for the amount of power they produce.

  “If enough people fear houses will stop rising (prices don’t even need to decline)”. This was the exact point made by Michael Burry in The Big Short. The gig is up when prices stop rising, not when they start falling. In Chch I am seeing huge amounts of stock coming to market, mostly low end, clearly investors trying to get rid of investment properties now they are struggling to rent them at prices to cover their escalating mortgage costs. Stock is at the highest its ever been (across the 14 suburbs, and price brackets that I monitor) and its June, when it should be at its lowest. God help them when all the spring stock hits the market in a couple of months.

    Housing affordability is very much a political problem. And a simple one … where THE major problems are impediments to land supply and inappropriate infrastructure financing.
    
    There is nothing particularly technical … or spare the thought intellectual … about it.
    
    It is therefore of critical importance the issue is readily understood by the general public … something Minister Nick Smith should have been acutely aware of.
    
    As the initiator back in 2004 of the Annual Demographia Survey, I have had no communications whatsoever with the MBIE people over recent years.

  Homogeneity does not necessarily mean racial homogeneity, it means having common goals and values.
  
  A homogenous population is not enough. You also need a medium to high IQ society. People with low IQs are always going to vote themselves free stuff and bugger the consequences.
  
  Giving a population with an average IQ of 80 or so is like giving over control to a bunch of 12 year olds. Everyone votes for free ice cream for the kids and the adults must pay all the bills.
  
  Different people with different values – particularly lower IQ people – are easily manipulated to fight against each other for the gain of those in power.

  Did anyone else note the US navy is calling the broadside of their destroyer by the container ship probably deliberate as the container ship, twice the size of the destroyer, passed by then did a 180º turn to run at their mid-ship. Significant damage and partial flooding resulted from a large gash below the waterline. 7 missing sailors have been found drowned in their bunks.

    I find a lot of conjecture about the collision being deliberate, but not from the USN.
    
    Even if deliberate, it is remarkable that with all the surveillance systems on the destoyer, radar, infra red, sonar, etc. was unable to detect and track a threat, that is of such size, even if blacked out.
    Was the destroyer blacked out?
    The does not seem to be running a tracker either.
    Even if the container ship is at fault, the destroyer, is much more nimble, in turns, acceleration and stopping.
    With regards to the Collision Rules, even if it had the right of way, being a navy ship it would also have a larger perimeter in that it takes action to keep a clear space around it, and it could do so being out in open seas.
    
    A container ship of that size is not a precise weapon, that can easily twist and turn to target and hit a destroyer, that should have more than enough men on watch, if any thing overstaffed, to monitor the surrounding area.
    
    All of the information will come out, particularly regarding the correct time of collision with UTC time and different conversions to local time and GMT. I think at the moment that many are getting mixed up with the tracking and timing.

  With Maori immersion you’re up against two hurdles:
  
  1) Finding fluent Maori teachers.
  2) Finding competent teachers for maths etc.
  
  Now combining those (ie. finding teachers who are both competent in maths AND fluent in Maori) is going to make for some very thin pickings.
  
  On top of that, what does this help the actual kids? Will their Maori 5 times table serve them well when they go out into the real world?

      I’ve encountered some primary_level Kura-educated teens who have low literacy levels at Secondary School entry. Damn difficult to get these folks up to the reading level of their peer group.
      I’ve also encountered a couple of Kura-educated girls who couldn’t read/pronounce some common Maori words. (wahine, moana)

The Hooerald is in a group that also owns radio stations, but I’m not aware that Stuff’s owner has radio interests.

  Indeed. Do you remember that time, a long time ago when media understood its primary role was reporting the news, rather than trying to create it, or become the centre of attraction? Mind you, there was also a reason why electronic broadcasting was exclusively publicly-owned. The likes of, say, Paul Holmes may have called it boring and stuffy. A strong NZD:
The relentless rise of the New Zealand dollar will probably draw the Reserve Bank’s ire when it reviews its official cash rate setting on Thursday.

The currency rose more than half a percent against the US dollar last week and is nearly 6% higher than when the central bank released its last monetary policy statement on May 11.

The kiwi has also gained 6.8% against the British pound and about 2.5% against both the Australian dollar and the euro.

So why is it suddenly covering the outfall of the Grenfell Tower fire?

Does it matter in this case? Isn’t any publicity good publicity if it helps bring justice and help to the victims of the Grenfell tragedy? If May can be arm-twisted into handing over cash, and if the publicity helps make sure such events become less likely in the future, does it matter what agenda the media may be following

To an extent that is obviously true. And let’s hope some good does come from the publicity being given to the anger of the people in the streets. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t question and remain sceptical when the wolf slips on his sheepskin.

    That wasn’t the only odd thing about it. The point of impact was very calculated. It was a fraction away from hitting the main shaft corridor which would have sunk it. And it had no running lights or transponder, which is willful.

      I would think it is was the USN ship in a blackout and no transponder mode. There is no tracker of that destroyer at that time.
      
      Also to take care checking the the UTC and GMT and to local times, as it seems many are making errors in this, when relating to the transponder/track of the container ship and to the collision time.
      Funny no track of destroyer so one can not say where the collision occured on the freighters track
      
      Probable negligence, misunderstanding, and miscalculation on both ships.
      
      If it was a straight on T bone it would have sunk the destroyer, so it was a heavy glance, on the port sided of the container ship, which would seem to have given it right of way, and a hit on the starboard side of the destroyer which should have given way..
      The only conjecture would be if the the container ship was an overtaking vessel and so the destroyer should have maintained its course. Still at a certain point on feeling endangered it should have taken avoiding action.
      
      Light on or off, transponder on or off, one would think that a well staffed navy vessel , with all that great radar, etc, should have been easily able to monitor and track that container ship.
      The bow of another boat is always dangerous, and one never knows when it will engage gear or increase speed.

        Yeah one possibility is they were in EMCON-A where all the oscillators are switched off to avoid satellite tracking.
        
        Of course they had people on watch, but you’ve got that container ship coming at you at speed, lights off.
        
        As I say, look at the track. And look at where it hit – very precise. Hard to believe it was just a coincidence, those two things together.

        Yes – but the first article would argue that people who think we need to get a more canny about environmental issues are to blame for the fire – no really – that’s what it says.
        
        The second view is that rich people who don’t want to look at scummy tower blocks, as well as the landlords who don’t want to pay for decent safe housing are to blame.
        
        You’re right – in the end innocent people have fucking well suffocated and burned to death.
        
        But I know what I know about this and the evidence is overwhelming. The article on climate alarmists is a paltry response. Hopefully an decent inquiry will bring the right people to justice.

        The Planning Documents for the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower spell out that the cladding is to improve the Environmental Performance of the building (i.e. thermal & sound insulation) as well as to improve its appearance.

Yet the profit motive was all powerful.         If environmental performance means using resources wisely, fine. Cheap refits do not meet this goal. They do as this has done – put people at risk. Cheap refits meet the purpose of those wishing to make quick gains and those who facilitate this (hence the Boris link).
        
        Don’t accuse me of “greenwashing”. Environmental concerns are not the issue in this fire – cheap landlords who don’t believe that people deserve warm, safe homes and who won’t pay for quality upgrades, are the issue – and the regulators who enable them. They were doing a minimum refit for maximum points. Scum.

Guess which religion this fucker is from?? Name: Kiimatangiroa Junior Samuel – so I assumed the special bunch that look after their kids so well, but then the kicker
