A third of the world now faces deadly heatwaves as result of climate change

High temperatures are currently baking large swaths of the south-western US, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing an excessive heat warning for Phoenix, Arizona, which is set to reach 48.3C on Monday. The heat warning extends up through the heart of California, with Palm Springs forecast 46.6C.

      Here in NZ we’re all rich pricks. We can survive $5/litre petrol. We can survive paying more for our electricity. It would stuff the economy, but we’d survive.
      
      But people in the third world – not so easy. Double the cost of their kerosene and they will just hack down the bush for cooking fires. Less trees, more respiratory illness, and lower quality of life.
      
      Double the cost of transport and there’s no more schooling, etc. Industry fails. Jobs (as limited as they are) take a tumble.
      
      Health declines too due to spreading disease. Ever seen people with dysentery – not pretty.
      
      More civil wars, more mayhem, more disease, more dead people.
      
      Warmists often say we should apply the precautionary principle and shut down civilisation “jut in case”.
      
      No, I say, let’s not cause death and suffering “just in case”.
      
      If you want to want to cause this suffering in the third world, then bring me something more substantial than a polar bear with sun burn.

        If you want 1GW of solar generation then you also need to build 1GW of some other generation to run when the sun isn’t shining.
        
        Therefore any solar installation really costs as much as the solar plant + its secondary (or really primary) generator.
        
        Therefore it costs MORE than just the primary generator.
        
        Please correct that logic.

        Hi CMM No point in arguing with W of O. Truth will prevail. Just down tick and move on. The problem is there are very few warmists presenting good scientific arguments, based on solid raw data to convince me that the current fluctuations are indeed human induced. CFCs could be the culprit as they did increase with the warming and now have been phased out. They trap very different wavelengths to CO2 and could result in added warming.

        WoO: That reneweconomy article is bullshit.
        
        Even if PV goes to 20c/W (ie. $200M per GW) it still does not work when the sun does not shine and you still need normal generation to provide power 24/7. Therefore you still need all the cost of that extra generation too.
        
        It can never be cheaper because it is not a full solution on its own.
        
        On top of that, coal plants last 50 years or more. PV is 20 years or so. PV needs electricity to purify te silicon, so you end up with a significant % of the electrical output required to keep the system going.
        
        I don’t believe anything that promises something in 15 years. In the 1990s, PV was supposed to be cheaper than coal before 2000, then 2005, then 2010, and now 2032. I’ll rather go get a Tui out of the fridge.
        
        Back in 2005-2009 or so, people were talking about the Smart Grid which would use PV to generate, then store power in everyone’s battery car battery banks. ie. use the car battery banks as a backup for PV.
        
        Three big problems with that:
        1) If you’re using your car battery as a battery bank at night then it is flat when you want to go to work in the morning.
        2) If the sun doesn’t shine that day then your PV charging does not work and you don’t go home that day and there’s no battery power to power the smart grid.
        3) Batteries only handle so many charge/discharge cycles. Using the batteries as “smart grid” storage will halve (or worse) their life. Bloody expensive.
        
        Battery making is terrible for the environment (ie. the muck that comes out is not just water and CO2 – plant food).

  The towering inferno was caused by green being preferred over fire-proof. Those panels were a sandwich of aluminum alloy (which can mean magnesium) and expanded polyethylene. The latter burns as ethylene gas. Remember the cool store fire in Hamilton.

    Seems to me that the building as originally design was reasonably fire resistant. Seems apartments were designed so any fire was contained in that apartment. Original exterior cladding was fire resistant so fire could not spread via the exterior. However the new cladding was the equivalent of allowing petrol to trickle down the exterior walls so if it was ignited the whole lot would go up.
    This gave me the idea for a terrorist attack. The terrorists obtain the cladding material as used in that apartment, and disguised as builders, install the cladding on the target building. When they want the building to be destroyed they simply ignite the cladding.

    The manufacturer of the exterior panels on the tower offered 2 types; ‘pe’ – polyethylene backed or ‘fr’ – fire resistant (probably backed with compressed rock wool or similar). It appears that the client foolishly chose ‘pe’ because it was cheaper (by $3 per panel). I understand that the administration of the tower was taken over by a resident’s cooperative because they were unhappy with how the Council was running it. So the question will be how the budget is spent and who makes the decisions. (‘follow the money’)

      Seems that the cladding used is not allowed in USA and some European nations. In UK it is a matter of legal interpretation whether these panels may be used or not. The UK Government has latched on to this and inquiring into this urgently and not waiting for the proposed formal enquiry (this would be constituted similarly to the Clapham Junction train crash enquiry in the early 1980’s conducted by Hidden QC but this will take months). This includes possible criminal action (which would turn on an interpretation of building rules). So it comes down to the designer, supplier of cladding and builder. Also the ‘client’ depending on what decisions the client made including choice of designer.
      The other key aspect is how many other buildings in UK are affected and the best way of dealing with it (note my earlier posting that the cladding in question is equivalent to allowing petrol to continually run down the walls of these buildings).
      This spins off on NZ too – what major buildings have been fitted with this sort of cladding?

      So in being kind to their Muslim neighbours they are honestly doing what they believe Christ would do.
      However a Christian relies on the government to make sound decisions as to who to actually bring into the country.

        No, and it is amazing that you have undermined Christ’s teaching of the parable of the Good Samaritan without even realising it. Remember what prompted Christ’s teaching? The question “Who is my neighbour (whom I must love as myself)?” In effect you are wanting the state to choose desirable neighbours whom you will then find it much easier to love!
        
        The flaw in your logic came in that Christians don’t “rely” on the government to make sound decisions in respect of any public policy, including whom to actually bring into the country. Christians can legitimately seek to influence good policy, like any other interest group. But the idea that Christians rely in some special way on Caesar to implement the right policy, be it immigration, taxation, law and order or providing good and desirable neighbours is…heresy, IMHO. God alone is the one on whom we are to rely.

  Labour say they are going to stop students coming to NZ, but they can’t do that because it would cost thousands of TEU members their jobs. So instead they’ll cut the number of working holiday visas, but they can’t do that because there will be no one to pick apricots, cherries, grapes etc. So instead they’ll cut the number of skilled migrants, but they can’t do that because they need to import 10,000 tradies a year to build houses on land they don’t own and haven’t budgetted for.
  
  And now their comrades in the Greens want to bring in 5,000 refugees a year, no doubt followed by their extended family members, and they’ll get rich migrants to pay for it, but there won’t be any rich migrants because they’ll take their money and their businesses elsewhere. But that doesn’t matter because there will still be heaps of eager young Germans ready to harvest the money trees.

  Diversity and ‘helping strangers,’ as long as they are not white males who can prepare a budget, is the mantra.
  
  The target yoof believe this shit as doctrine, like any other culture that has been brain washed.
  
  This will pick up Gween (Red) votes without losing any.
  They know their voting base is not grads from Auckland Grammar or Kings.
  They are after those from De La Salle and Manurewa High. This is where their disciples have been doing their Red mission.
  
  The marxists know what they are doing. The Red revolution one hundred years ago this month in Russia was amid great chaos.
  There is not chaos to progress their plans in NZ so they must create a chaotic environment.
  Bringing in thousands of non aligned refugees is another brick in their wall.

    They don’t have a rising water problem in Tarawa. The massive relative population is physically compressing their atoll. They lost drinking water too through the compression. The atoll is very low lying so tides deposit salt and spoil crops.
    It’s time they moved. Re-settlement is needed and some arrangements are being negotiated for that possibility in Fiji.

      The salt water in the water table is due to fresh water extraction.Extract from the water table and you get sea water intrusion. Happens all over the world.The more people on the tiny island the more water extracted and the more intrusion.

        The freshwater in lagoons sits as like a lens on the saltwater below. Extraction may be significant but in Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati, the coral landscape has been compressed. Fifty thousand people in 2010 were living on 1023ha. The other problem is direct salinity from tides washing over the very low lying land area. Water is rationed too as it can be either plentiful when the skies briefly open or nil for months otherwise.
        Thankfully I turned down a job there in 1975.

  The islanders eat the parrot fish which produce the coral.
  Tarawa atoll once had 10,000 people now it has 30,000.
  Some islands are 2m-3m tops above sea level; seasonal tides deposit salt.
  There is a lot more. Population pressure on uninhabitable islands is the real problem. Climate change obscures the required attention.

  I remember the days when people used to say the same thing about the “papists” and the country was going to be run from Rome. We used to be called Roman Catholics back then, much to our discomfit.
  Unfortunately it never worked out that way despite the huge number of kids in some families. I had plenty of mates who had more than ten siblings.
  I used to look forward to the day when the whole of NZ would be converted to Catholicism.
  As the years went by the more stridently religious faded away and it’s been a long time since anyone worried about the ogre in the Vatican.

The running over of people leaving a mosque in London is reprehensible and indefensible.

But the question has to ask; where were all the people screaming “Islamophobia” when proven Islamic extremists were blowing up, running down and stabbing people in Manchester and London?

The media coverage of yesterday’s atrocity has been revealing. The whole tone has been of a minority group being targeted by an Islamophobic majority. Sadiq Khan’s outrage at yesterday’s event has been in stark contrast to his “you have to expect terrorism in a big city” comments of two weeks ago.

Let me conclude. None of the terrorist events in the UK or elsewhere can ever be justified or excused. So why is there such a difference in the way they are reported, and in the reactions of the victims?

  My read from a call I got from the UK, person lives 200m away. Driver turned into a the road, there was a group attending to a old man who had collapsed in the road. Swerved to miss them, hit a motor bike and lost control, mounted the curb and hit a further group watching. Yes he was travelling to fast but just a stupid road accident.
  Stories: there were three and two ran away, he had a knife, he yelled “I want to kill moslems”, (by the same witness who said he had a knife and there was three of them). The person who died was the old man, of natural causes. Nobody, except maybe one was seriously hurt.
  Not saying my version is any more fake than the beatup by the MSM but lets wait to see what the True story is.

      It was actually the Rotary Club of AVONHEAD (which is in Christchurch). And if they don’t want their traditions threatened by women joining their club, they are probably safe. What woman in her right mind would bother attending a club populated by elderly curmudgeons?
      
      Fortunately, most Rotary clubs now are enlightened enough to welcome women members. My own club actually has around 60% female members, and the world hasn’t stopped turning.

      How much individual (positive) attention you get from your parents increases IQ.
      So does breastfeeding, being read to, not being bashed or seeing your mum bashed.
      I know very successful, well-educated Maori and Pacifica kids.
      All of them come from smaller families and with nice dads who treat them and their mums well.
      It is sad to see the contrast with their cousins who have chauvinist brutes for dads.

Following the Pike River disaster my family collectively sent a 3 figure sum to the miner’s families.
How can we get it back as it was in retrospect wrong, along with the over $30,000,000 given to the 29 families (actually 31 people as the two who got out also collected). ?
We are told that the families are going to the High Court over something regarding Whittall. I bet they will employ top QC’s on legal aid.
Surely one of the lead woman, along with Monkhouse, who both lost one son and one the other got out and collected what must be over a million dollars should think of the ramifications as this is now a Political stunt.
Should a case be found against Whittall who is outside New Zealand jurisdiction then the Health and Safety Manager should be joined. He allowed his two sons to go down the mine – one was killed and the other above got out. It was he who at the Commission of Enquiry made it clear that the mine was unsafe.
I want our money back as we do not support this kind of continuing media political stunt.

  In NZ there seems to be an unwillingness to hold anyone accountable for these major tragedies. Pike River. Cave Creek. CTV Bldg. Erebus. Often it’s the subsequent actions of the victims that come under the microscope.
  At the other extreme China often finds a culprit & executes them (depending on other factors).

        Most of them had many years experience in mining. IIRC, only one or two had less than a year’s mining experience. All miners in NZ have at least some training.
        
        Even in South Africa (which I assume you’re refering to with “blek morners”), all the miners at least had some training before going underground.
        
        Safety is everyone’s responsibility especially those who are involved on a day to day basis.

  As far as I know nothing in the new H & S addresses the issue of PC Plod preventing a rescue attempt after the first explosion. We have no idea if some could have been saved. A re-entry may address the issue.
  
  If the families had been told the whole truth we would not be in this situation.

  The allegation came after the resignation of his Gore-based senior electorate agent Glenys Dickson in February, with a party official citing an “employment problem” between the pair.
  
  A police spokesman said in a statement they received a complaint in February 2016 regarding an allegation that private communications had been intercepted by an individual.
  
  The complaint was assessed and an investigation was commenced. This investigation examined all the available information, including interviews with key witnesses.
  
  The file was also referred to the Police legal section for review.
  
  After consideration of all relevant information and the Solicitor General’s prosecution guidelines, Police determined there was insufficient evidence to prosecute, the statement says.

  We have this quaint notion in our justice system jonar, called the presumption of innocence. Barclay was never charged with a crime, so your suggestion that Key had knowledge of said “crime” is a fiction.
  
  None of this changes the fact that Barclay behaved like a pillock. Hopefully this whole issue has been a learning experience for him, or he might become our youngest ex-MP.

    However, a Newsroom investigation into the MP’s conduct — including an interview with Dickson, speaking publicly for the first time since her resignation — has produced new information about the first-term National MP.
    
    * Barclay denied to members of his electorate there had been recording of Dickson, and about being approached by police.
    
    * English knew Dickson had been recorded by Barclay and spoke to her about it, despite telling media he had not been directly involved in any discussions.
    
    * Then-Prime Minister John Key’s parliamentary budget was used to pay part of a confidential settlement to Dickson, in an attempt to avoid “potential legal action”.

  Sounds like Todd Barclay has to shoulder much of the blame for the whole debacle, getting off-side with all the electorate staff. Recording a senior staff member without her knowledge is a despicable thing to do, then he lied about it. Employment law is a quagmire and confidentiality agreements cover up all sorts of inappropriate behaviour allowing those who have transgressed to move on to employment without being hindered. Seems the National Party were good employers and did what was needed for their long time employee who was recorded and disrespected by a jumped up wee boy who mis-judged his abilities.
  
  We had an ex-employee we’d have loved to have reported to the relevant authority but after going through the process of dismissal, under the confidentiality agreement we were legally unable to do so.

    Indeed. The perspective of a lawyer seeking to limit potential criminal liability, and a political party needing to be seen to cooperate with the institutions of law and order are sometime contradictory. And if you want to remain an MP, openness, cooperation and disclosure should be the norm, and the model for the public.
    
    Irrespective of the fact that Barclay had the legal right to fail to cooperate with police, his refusal to do so should a reason for instant expulsion from his caucus and party. Richard Prebble realised that as soon as Donna Awatere-Huata refused to cooperate with a police enquiry. She was removed from her caucus, and then her party forthwith. It is incompetence by National that they have not recognised the need to cut out the cancer.
    
    The good National voters of Clutha-Southland can deal with this by voting for another electorate candidate, although whether National still deserve their party vote is moot.

I had to laugh at Little’s statement today that Barclay lacked moral judgement regarding his decision – that coming so quickly after Little’s reprehensible behaviour towards the Hagaman family. Oh, the hypocrisy but are we surprised?
  
  Has anyone noticed the beefing up of personal attacks on National MPs by the Herald, ZB and Red Radio? Nicky Wagner for expressing out loud about her wish to be out on the harbour on a beautiful sunny day rather than in a meeting room and Tim Groser for having the GCSB check out his WTO competitors.

The moral of the story is don’t go to a 3rd world shit hole, commit a crime and not expect the worst to happen.     The average price of Auckland homes sold by Harcourts in May was $947,809 which was well below the $1,024,317 benchmark set in April this year, and down 0.7% compared to May last year.
    
    In Christchurch the slide in price has been even more severe, with May’s average sale price of $498,370 down 10% compared to the average price of $553,114 in May last year.
    
    “Vendors are starting to adjust their expectations when it comes to prices,” Kennedy said.

The gig is up when prices stop rising, not when they start falling. In Chch I am seeing huge amounts of stock coming to market, mostly low end, clearly investors trying to get rid of investment properties now they are struggling to rent them at prices to cover their escalating mortgage costs. Stock is at the highest its ever been (across the 14 suburbs, and price brackets that I monitor) and its June, when it should be at its lowest. God help them when all the spring stock hits the market in a couple of months.

        I don’t read Hugh as “complaining that house prices are dropping”. He is blaming National for letting the prices inflate, predicting that the inevitable falls as a result of failure to manage them down, will be an uncontrollable, ruinous crash.
        
        He is merely waiting to be proved right. I believe he will be, but every price blip downwards does not necessarily mean the crash is on us. I used to think a crash was imminent merely on the fundamentals – Ireland’s ruinous crash in 2007 involved a peak median multiple, in Dublin, of 6.6. Auckland is now 10. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see this coming.
        
        You do have to be one of the mad, greed-frenzied or politically venal crowd to continue defending the record.
        
        But I have read good explanatory literature about just how long it can take for a bubble to actually burst. It is really testament to the human weakness for self-delusion, especially where easy wealth is involved, and political expedience. Kiwis, Aussies, Canadians and a few others absolutely beggar belief, given that there have been cautionary examples that could have been learned from – and the right reforms could have been done in 2008.         And as long as mortgages get paid, the Banks will do nothing. All that happens is people’s expectations get adjusted.
        It’s only when you have a recession and people lose their jobs and are then forced to sell that a crash occurs.
        We are a long way away from a recession.
        The other thing is that most people have significant equity in their homes, certainly enhanced by the rise in values in the past seven years and the seven years before and the seven years before that.
        Which means the vast majority are modestly geared so a drop will not effect them. First home buyers perhaps but they don’t comprise a huge percentage of the market and as long as they keep their jobs it won’t matter.
        Hugh thinks he’s an expert but he’s not.

Well, well, well. Look at this. A new study shows that electric car batteries aren’t actually that better for the environment when all the manufacturing etc is taken into account. In fact, the comparison to one of the larger batteries show that you would need to drive a petrol car around for 8 years to generate the same amount of CO2 as one of these electric batteries.

The report shows that battery manufacturing leads to high CO2 emissions. For each kilowatt-hour storage capacity in the battery, emissions of 150 to 200 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent are generated, already in the factory.

The researchers have not studied individual car brand’s batteries, just how they were produced or what electrical mix they used. But to understand the importance of battery size here’s one example: Two standard electric cars on the market, Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S, have batteries of approximately 30 kWh and 100 kWh respectively.

As soon as you buy the car, CO2 emissions of approximately 5.3 tonnes and 17.5 tonnes, respectively, have been released for batteries of these sizes. The numbers may be difficult to relate to. By way of comparison, a trip for a person returning from Stockholm to New York by air causes emissions of more than 600 kilograms of carbon dioxide, according to the UN organization ICAO’s calculation model.

Mats-Ola Larsson, their colleague at IVL, has calculated how long you need to drive a petrol or diesel car before it has released as much carbon dioxide as an electric car battery. The result was 2.7 years for a battery of the same size as Nissan Leaf and 8.2 years for a battery of Tesla size, based on a series of assumptions.

If AGW is real, adaptation is a more feasible economic option than attempting to be King Canute by preventing everything and gaining very little.

    The msm are turning themselves inside out not knowing what to call BE today regarding the Todd Barclay revelations this morning. Early this morning P.Gower was calling for Bill’s head because he was covering for Barclay’s behaviour in having recorded a senior staff member in the electorate office.
    The latest news bulletin has said BE “has thrown Todd Barclay to the wolves” as BE had informed the police of the recording back when they were first informed of the event.

“Tomorrow, Wellington City councillors will consider a proposal to name the path Kake Tonu Way, which means ever upwards in Maori.
Wellington City Council safe city adviser Julia Hamilton said the council undertook a safety audit of the site after the assault in January.
She said that resulted in the decision to name the path, increase maintenance in the area, install a CCTV camera, paint a mural and undertake earthworks to improve sightlines.
People have perceived this as an unsafe space so through this project we’re really hoping to change that perception and have it seen as a positive space, a safe space for people to come and go.”

One would have thought that installing the CCTV camera and trimming vegetation would have been enough on its own but it seems that to make something truly a “safe positive space” you also need to give it a Māori name and paint a mural.
Well why not go all the way and have a choir singing peace songs and people handing out organic fruit along the way as well.

The Officers and crew of the USS Fitzgerald are being ORDERED to sign a NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT, concealing all details of events leading up to, and in the aftermath of, its collision with the Philippines cargo ship, ACX Crystal.

Two persons with direct knowledge of the facts have revealed the Officers and crew are being threatened with Court Martial if they disclose any information about the events of that night in violation of the NDA. Anyone refusing to sign the NDA has been told they will be arrested and face a Court Martial for “refusing to obey a lawful order” and further that they “will be jailed for decades.”

Whatever took place in this incident is clearly so serious or sensitive, the Pentagon is going all-out to conceal the details.

The persons with whom I spoke say they know exactly what took place and “there is ample reason for the Pentagon to be freaking-out about it.”

When I asked to be told what took place, these persons declined to reveal it to me . . . . “at least for now.”

You have to see this: eye-witnesses and neighbours from Grenfell Tower telling you what went on. 500 people lived there, it was the middle of the night, so far they have said about 60 killed and 100 “missing.”

While the media pretends nothing’s wrong and films the Queen’s visit as if nothing happened. On the video you have clips of firefighters just sitting around, while people were burning.

  The Anglican Church started to rot in the 1960s when they let radical ministers loose. Most of their churches have closed and the remaining flocks mainly consist of ‘waiting for Gods’. The church is now merely a shell of its former self, and will go along with just about any anti Christ ideas. C of E is the Sky TV of the mainstream religions; a sunset outfit.

    Is not that hard. If you use Chrome, just install the Tamper Monkey extension. If you use Firefox, install the Grease monkey extension.
    
    I use Chrome, so I have Tamper Monkey installed.
    Then you just click the Tamper Monkey icon on the toolbar up, top, go to Create a New Script. Then paste the script I have above and click the Save button (looks like a lil disc). The next time you come to Kiwiblog it just works. Of course, they’ll probably fix it by tomorrow, so might not be worth it.

Today at 4.45pm I received an OIA reply from Minister for Building and Construction, Nick Smith, regarding evidence I have provided which proves that the Local Government and Environment Select Committee was given inaccurate advice regarding the Pt England Development Enabling Bill.

Nick Smith advised me to contact the Chair of the Local Government and Environment Select Committee – Andrew Bayly if I thought the Selecr Committee had been given inaccurate advice – which I have.

How can the House proceed with the
Pt England Development Enabling Bill if information about this Bill has been based upon inaccurate advice?
