      It’s no secret McCarten is no mastermind. Everything he has touched has turned to tits. This particular situation could not have arisen in isolation . It will have been cleared with the brass before they started. I have no time for McCarten but I did feel a tiny bit of sympathy for him after listening to the party president shoot McCarten full of holes on Larry Williams show last night. Whatever is going on high up in the troposphere Earth surface is getting hotter. Fact. So the greenhouse effect is real. Isn’t it. Massive ice loss too. Ordinary normal people can see Earth is heating up. It’s explained perfectly by more greenhouses gas. Normal physics.

Clearly 30,000 climate scientists and the global community of scientists are not persuaded by your weatherman Watts’ hanky-wanky. Just you and the other cranks.

In any case we don’t need models to tell us we’re in trouble. We’ve increased CO2 40% and the mean global surface temperature is up more than 1C already. So considering CO2 accumulates and the lag time is long — before the full effect of what’s there now is felt — business as usual means we’ll hit 2C within the life time of people alive today.

Paleoclimatology reinforces the fear. Last time the CO2 level was above 400ppm temperatures were up and the sea level 10 metres higher. It just takes time. The energy is `there. A work in progress.

For heaven’s sake even frogs have more brains than climate-science deniers. They hop out of a warming pot. Ribbit. Ribbit. Ribbit.

As Plank would have said, science advances one croak at a time…

Labour plan to introduce commuter rail in Christchurch.

Trains out to Rolleston makes no sense. The main road out there is not particularly congested even at peak times, and with the southern motorway phase 2 project planned to be finished by 2019 it’s not going to get congested in the forseeable future. It’s Christchurch’s northern motorway and Johns Road that get congested, from people in Rangiora and Kaiapoi commuting to work in the city. A northern rail service out to these locations makes far more sense than a service out to Rolleston.

But really the biggest problem with this whole introducing rail to Christchurch idea is that it relies on using existing lines. That keeps the cost way down and means it could be introduced fairly quickly. But the downside is the existing lines don’t go to most major destinations. They don’t go to the CDB; the closest it gets is Moorhouse Ave (600m from the bus exchange, 800m from Cathedral Square). They don’t even get close to Riccarton Mall, the university, the airport, or the Palms. They don’t go to any of the eastern or north-western suburbs. The existing lines are only two specific corridors with a very limited subset of destinations.

You could argue that people can transfer to buses to get to their final destination. But that just brings up the other argument against rail in Christchurch – it already has a very good bus system. In particular the Blue and Yellow lines offer high frequency service that roughly parallels the proposed rail lines. What would be the point of duplicating these services using trains?

    Agreed. It’s telling that even Lianne Dalziel didn’t seem keen on the idea – she knows it would achieve squat in terms of increasing public transport use or reducing congestion in Christchurch. But it lets Labour say to pro-train voters “look, we introduced a rail service” at a relatively low cost. Most of those voters will be in Auckland or Wellington of course, and probably won’t look at a map to see how small a percentage of the city that rail service actually covers.

  Rolleston has a population of approx 9000 and growing and the main south road is congested even at weekends although the motorway will help ease congestion. The I-Zone industrial area created by Selwyn District Council makes Christchurch City Councils industrial and commercial planning look like a 3 year old planning a trip to Mars so I see future growth in traffic ChCh to Rolleston especially as the Inland container ports take off. The railway line is adjacent the main Road and currently there is plenty of land to provide parking for commuters and the cost of a pilot passenger service to ChCh considerably cheaper than road improvements so light rail is a sensible option to do a viability study on. Central ChCh buried much of the tram lines which may be able to be reinstated at reasonable cost to provide CBD and suburban links.

    Thank you, but I had previously seen that link. There are multiple flaws in the case presented for commuter rail in Christchurch (some of which I stated in my initial post) and I don’t find it convincing.
    
    I completely disagree with your assertion about congestion on main south road, and that is based on personal experience. The traffic is certainly not light, but I have never been delayed by it either.

Sorry, it is not the Labour Party’s fault of course, it is McCarten.
How many months ago did these Interns apply for whatever status they have – it is not an overnight deal. April is the earliest so far professed by the Party Secretary but I suspect this has been on the cards for much longer.
Are these young men the Trump Refugees we hear about, and they will all go back ?
Angry Andy has a very big problem considering his new Immigration Policy which would appear to have been breached by this fiasco.

        Thanks Maggy, a good read but looks contrived to me. Almost as if “someone” got to him/her before. Not Labour’s fault, not Matt’s fault is all the others fault, is was them who lied and then leaked it to save themselves…Yeah Right! How can a leader that was the CEO of one of the biggest Union in the country make a song and dance about Bill English telling lies and then have a selective memory on Labours slave labour debacle.” Andrew Little admitted it was not a good look for the Party” so how can he distance himself from the $270,000 dollars three or four Unions have agreed to give to fund the scheme and as his Chief of Staff up until a few month ago their is no way Matt McCarten would have not had discussions over the people coming to help from other Countries. This has Andrew Littles fingerprints all over it and the lies he is telling are so blatant.

Tick, tick, tick…

At midnight last night, the clock ticked over to Friday 23rd June 2017. That makes today a very significant day.

It’s now three months until the General Election, and today marks the start of the regulated period where every dollar of election spending has to be accounted and reported.

But it’s also the day when the rules change for the Labour Party. Changing a leader normally requires a “Labour’s Got Talent” tour, where candidates go out and seek the support of party members and affiliate unions. That’s the system that delivered David Cunliffe and Andrew Little.

As from today however. Labour’s caucus calls the shots. The leader can be rolled, and a new leader appointed solely on the caucus vote. Bearing in mind that Andrew Little was only the first preference for leader of four (plus himself) of Labour’s 32 MP’s in 2014, you could make a strong argument that he doesn’t have a lot of support in caucus. On ther other hand, Grant Robertson was the first preference on every round of caucus voting, winning the final vote by 18-14, after Nanaia Mahuta and David Parker had been eliminated in the first two rounds. This week started so well for Labour. But yesterday #Pledgecard2 broke, and this morning on Newstalk ZB, Andrew Little threw Matt McCarten under the bus as his tries to distance himself and Labour from the omnishambles.

Swiss friends tell me about the spread of the Islamic ideology in their country- a surprise as I thought that the independent neutral non EU Swiss had things pretty well sussed. Seems that every time the locals object to something like a minaret being installed atop the local mosque so that the faithful can be summoned noisily to prayer the Islamists resort to the ‘racist’ and ‘Nazi’ labelling charge and appeal to every court imagineable, all with the aid of financial resources that would appear to be well beyond the means of the local Muslim community. Seems that the ready cash to pay for the legal challenges may be coming from an unknown overseas source. Saudi Arabia, perhaps?

Seems the decision by NZ Commerce Commission to deny the amalgamation of NZ Media Entertainment Group,and Fairfax Group has been vindicated.

I was pleased to hear Guyon on National radio grill Andrew Kirton hard this morning re the Labour clusterfuck. This is a far worse situation than Barclay’s. His was a stupid thing done through inexperience, and, btw, something Bill English spoke to the police about at the time. There was no cover up. Labour’s scheme was done by a whole heap of people who should know better and seems to be a deliberate flouting of the law. I’m loving watching the lying hypocrites squirm. Also on National the Maoris complaining that they are upset and belittled by comments that their marae is sub standard accommodation. Lol…you couldn’t make this up.

Andrew Little may have thrown Matt McCarten under a bus. But does anyone still believe that the Labour Party was not donkey-deep in this scheme, and that Matt McCarten was not campaigning on the taxpayer dime?

Newshub has obtained internal documents outlining Labour’s ambitious plans to put foreign students to work on its campaign.

The plan shows the party needed to find $270,000 in funding to pull it off and was banking on unions to fund a lot of it.

The budgeting was based on 100 students staying for an average of eight weeks. The cost of feeding and housing them in motorhomes was estimated at $240,000, with an operational budget of $30,000 for petrol, venues and AT HOP cards.

The documents show First and Unite unions agreed to contribute $100,000, “white collar unions” – likely the likes of the PSA – committed to $50,000, while Union Trust put up a start-up loan of $25,000.

The plan was to get E tū and “other appropriate unions” on board too.

The Council of Trade Unions (CTU) was also to be involved in management of the project, and while Labour has been distancing itself from the project, the documents explicitly states: “The programme and certification is the responsibility of Labour.”

But CTU national secretary Sam Huggard says the plan was never shared with them, and the CTU actually turned down a request to manage the interns.

“We’ve never seen this document and the CTU was not involved as described. I presume this was an early proposal document of some sort,” he told Newshub

“Matt [McCarten] asked CTU to run the worker aspect of Campaign for Change on the 12th of May this year, but we declined.”

On top of the union cash injections, a huge fundraising drive was planned – including holding 24 fundraising dinners, selling more than 1000 raffle tickets, bringing in donations of an extra $200 a day and recruiting 800 additional members.

The students were to sell the raffle tickets – 15 a week each, which would bring in $96,000.

A less expensive plan was also outlined, in which half of the students would be billeted.

The cost of that came in at $148,000 plus operational costs. It would have required less of a fundraising drive, but still relied on union funding.

Here’s another question to ponder. Is the timing of the release of this story, just the day before the Labour caucus can roll Andrew Little a mere coincidence? I think not, and nor was the Winston Peters-led attack on National and Barclay, given NZF has a campaign launch this weekend, and National has its conference.

One final question. Who has the most to gain by the leaking of internal Labour Party documents to Newshub? This seems all just a little fishy 😀

  KS – if you haven’t already heard the Morning Report interview with Labour’s general secretary, Andrew Kirton, have a listen because he admits the Labour Party have known about this “intern” scheme since April (despite Labour’s messaging this week suggesting it was a Matt McCarten initiative that Labour didn’t know much details about etc).
  
  The other Labour messaging this week is that the intern scheme was more “popular”than expected so didn’t realise things would get out of hand (eg only expected a dozen or so interns), but again in that Radio NZ interview Labour were expecting large numbers all along – in fact they had planned for 100.
  
  Simply astonishing deflections and spin being messaged by Labour in the last 24 hours that don’t stack up with what was admitted by Mr Kirton!

Yesterday the Democrats lost a congressional race in Georgia District 6 in which they poured $25 million. They had celebrity endorsements and huge amounts of money from out-of-state. But still they lost by 3 points. Make no mistake this was a race that the Democrats thought they could win based on opposition to Trump. They thought that the left-wing base of the Democrat party would swing them to victory. They still believe on a national level that opposition to the Trump and being part of “the resistance” is the right thing to do. At the moment the Democrat party has only one objective – to oppose everything Trump and see him impeached when the Democrats win the Senate in 2018.

But think about it for a moment. If you are an ordinary voter who wants a better standard of living, worried about unemployment, caring about your children’s future, why would you vote Democrat? What is the actual positive thing that the Democrats promise to do to make things better? At the end of the day opposition to Donald Trump goes only so far. The Democrats have no positive economic message right now. They didn’t have a positive economic message in the last presidential election either.

Donald Trump at his massive rally in Iowa talked to the American people about their needs and what he would do for them to make the country great again. Democrats talk about how terrible Donald Trump is.

So the president is focused on the the American people. Democrats are focused on Trump.

When you think about it like that you can see why Trump is winning elections?

I think Trump is doing an amazing job and is actually doing something for the people he has been elected to serve. His opposition only want to overturn the results of the last election. Trump is going to be there for 8 years and at the end of it Isis is gonna be defeated, the American economy will be booming and the world will be a better place for it.

I don’t get this. She faked her appraisal. Its serious, but is it “The worst kind of Conduct?” She couldn’t have been that bad a principal to last 22 years, and what was the BOT doing? If she was shagging her students, defrauding funds or physically abusing the staff I can understand “the worst kind of conduct”. She faked a document that basically says she’s doing OK as a principal. Appraisal, generally, is regarded by many in the teaching profession a as a complete waste of time.

A capital gains tax would be good and fairer for NZ taxpayers, but only if the total national tax take wasn’t increased. That is, other taxation was reduced to compensate for the introduction of a robust capital gains tax.

I was involved in a situation recently where I popped into an MP’s electoral office to advocate on an individual’s behalf.
My individual is not on any electoral roll.
I would argue that they are no less a constituent, neither did the office but it did make me wonder whether there should be an at least enrolled requirement as a means of getting more people on the actual roll, when wanting an MP’s assistance.

Govt in power for three terms and still polling at the same number as 9 years ago. Ditto for Slavelab in opposition.

  At this stage before Labour were dismissed in 2008, confidence in the Gov’t had dipped well below 100.
  
  So, 3 reasons why Labour are not looking good:
  1) The Party is polling poorly.
  2) The leader is polling extremely poorly.
  3) The electors are comfortable with the Gov’t’s performance.
  
  Add to that the fact that Labour have saddled themselves with Greens, who want to bring in many more refugees, and it’s looking pretty grim for them.
  
  But there’s still time for it all to unravel for the Nats.

The council’s general manager of building control, Ian McCormick, said enquiries around the presence of aluminium composite panels started after the Lacrosse Apartment fire in Melbourne two years ago.

“It was a little difficult for us to identify those buildings initially because we don’t keep records by cladding type of buildings.”

A list of potentials drawn up with industry turned up 21 buildings that “represented a large proportion of the larger buildings in Auckland”, McCormick said.

Council staff then realised the list didn’t include some buildings known to have the panels.

“As a result we went through an area canvas of Auckland.”

That meant “staff driving a vehicle and walking around” to identify buildings that looked like they might have alumnium composite panels, McCormick said.

“We end up now with a situation where we have around about 90 buildings that we’re looking at in that list.”

The two buildings identified as having aluminium composite panels were currently being re-cladded for weather tightness, rather than fire-related issues.

Labour MP Trevor Mallard is risking the politician’s curse and has headed to Bermuda for the America’s Cup.

The Hutt South MP and yachting enthusiast, who is paying his own way, appears to be the only MP headed to the event.

In previous years, Government ministers have had an uncanny knack of turning up in the Cup’s host country on crucial, unrelated business.

Finance Minister Steven Joyce was famously accused of jinxing Team New Zealand in 2013 when, as Economic Development Minister, he arrived in San Francisco just as Oracle begun its comeback.

With Peter Burling’s team holding a 3-0 advantage in the 2017 finals, Joyce is staying away.

Mallard has no such superstitions, saying the bad luck is all National’s and he has closely followed every race since the 1980s.

But unlike some optimists, he is booked to stay until Thursday – the latest possible finish for the Cup. New Zealand can win the event as soon as Tuesday.

“It would be lovely if we can win it by then,” he said. “But I know from experience that I should not be quite that positive.”

The MP had not initially planned to go to Bermuda but said he got swept up in the emotion of the races. He was quick to point out that he was traveling on his own money and was in cattle class for the long trip via Los Angeles and New York.
