I’m one of those adults not in Kiwisaver. Never saw the point of it.

The returns you get after fees etc are never going to be more than what a bank charges in interest, therefore it’s better to have a mortgage and put any $ towards paying that off.

Having a mortgage is effectively saving. Houses are still ridiculously cheap in many parts of NZ and there is plenty of work to be had in the regions. Even Northland.

If you can’t get $50,000 together by the age of 30 to get a deposit down on a cheap house in the regions then what have you been doing?

    I moved my into a high performing oufit and its doing way better than inflation + fees too.

  So you are going to turn your back on $500 or so government subsidy every year?
  Investments in shares are always going to be higher than bank interest over the long term- and for young people KS is long term
  For 90% of people the fact that the money comes out of their pay packet before they see it is a good thing.
  
  Putting aside $30 a week isnt going to be enough to have a deposit for a house- they will increase faster than that- yet it will provide a handsome lump sum at 65- which can be kept invested unless you are on your bones

    Good lord – I agree with ztev.
    
    KiwiSaver was stuffed up in two ways:
    
    1. The default provision should have been at least into Balanced Funds not Conservative or Defensive.
    2, The IRD should not have been the middleman – employers/members should have been able to forward funds direct to the Fund Managers with the IRD only coming into play for the tax credits at the end of each tax year.
    
    There is far to much `lag time’ between the funds leaving the employer and them being credited to the KiwiSaver fund. Virtually all of that time is at the IRD.

      The government directs payment to lesser risky funds as a default. The acceptance of risk should be a user choice.
      
      Direct payments. Having experience of admin of a similar fund the mismatching of client numbers etc would have been horrendous with multiple funds doing their own thing.
      
      The lag time is likely taken up up with matching contributors payments with fund subcribers. Automation can find the mismatch: humans are required to sort it out.

    I give them $5000. Administration takes up, say, $200. They then give $500 back to me and another $500 to the missus. Then $3800 goes to top up other people.
    
    So did I now gain $500 or did I lose $4500?
    
    The only way Cullen can make is magic unicorn work is to take away even more money from me to give to other people.

      The kiwisaver investment funds pay tax
      Investment is a good idea, NZ doesnt save as much as it should

  What level of Kiwisaver were you thinking? There is ‘low risk’, medium and aggressive. ‘Low risk’ is going to be on a par with money in a bank savings account. Aggressive will do the best in the long term but will have ups and downs. IMO all new Kiwisavers under say 35 should be put into an aggressive default scheme, not a ‘low risk’ one as at present.
  I agree that Kiwisaver would be galling to those who can prosper from ‘hands on’ investment. In Australia I think there is a ‘cage’ system for mandatory superannuation. The contributions go into a ‘cage’ and interest/ dividends etc stay in the ‘cage’.

    Peterwn – depending on fee structures low risk may well under perform bank deposits. mrspdm still has KiwiSaver at age 66 and remains in Aggressive and doing nicely over the last 5 years thank you.
    I see the Cullen Fund declared 18%+ for it’s latest returns and with the constraints the `do gooders’ put on it’s investment allocations an Aggressive KiwiSaver funds should outperform that – even after fees and tax.

  But also, Dime could have put 10 grand or whatever the amount is into kiwi saver a year… OR he could have done what he did do – prop up a brand new rental for 2 years with that money and turned 15k into 200….

  As has been said before the only winners in KiwiSaver is the Fund Managers.
  Next year savers will get a shock, when the Fund Managers will have to declare “in Dollars” how much they have ripped out of each saver.
  No wonder they are still trying to resist this.
  I speak from experience in a similar type of saving over 15 years ago where they lost my funds (a third) and still took their fees. I was locked into this similar scheme to Kiwisaver in a lump sum retirement savings.
  The same Managers are still right up with the largest schemes. They were one of those along with the Banks who conned Cullen into this.

  Nope, unless you want to really downgrade the type of property and where you live at retirement and most people don’t want to do that. They get used to a certain lifestyle/area etc. You could move out of a big city to a cheaper country town but there are risks with that, like access to medical care as you age.

    To be more precise, it’s illegal to kill them by drowning under the Animal Welfare Act. They should have hit them on the head with a hammer, say. Also, if you are organising something like this as a school fundraiser, it would probably be a better look to put an adult in charge of killing the joeys rather than letting teenagers do it (fwiw, I killed plenty of possums as teenager, but probably in this context better to get one of parents to do it).

        No SGA it is not a big jump. It is all part of the schools twisting the definitions and values of society to turn us into cucks.
        
        It used to be normal to be proud of your roots, protect your society, be straight and be prepared to kill your own food (ie. understand the food chain).
        
        Now vegetarianism and being gay are normal and you’re weird if you’re straight and are prepared to be an active participant in the food chain. If you show any hint of pride in your culture (and you’re white) then you’re a racist xenophobe. It’s all part of the same thing: trying to erode society.
        
        I’ve got nothing against gays – got a few gay friends/colleagues. Nor have I got anything against vegetarians (all my immediate family are vegetarians). But neither are “normal”.

        Killing with a hammer can be challenging with an adult hopping about and moving it’s head. Whack at the back of the skull where it joins on the neck (atlas joint)
        
        A bit of 2×4 is far better because it is far easier to get a blow into the right area.
        
        So is swinging it by the tail and whacking its head against a fence post.

        When I was an early teenager,aged 13-16, I used to set gin traps overnight down at the creek near our house. In the morning I would go down with a short metal bar and kill them with that. Some of them could take a fair battering and one I had to drown to kill it.
        
        That is the way it was in the country in those days – early 1960’s.

      Spent quite a bit of time, shooting, trapping and poisoning aforesaid possums and sending the skins off to the sales at Dunedin.
      The kids at that school seem to be from farming stock with the good dose of reality that that brings.
      Perhaps one of our townees would like to tell us as to what method of death is preferable to any others?

        Please share with us the names of some of these “many of history’s greatest innovators and artists who pulled themselves out of poverty..”
        From what I’ve read, very few great innovators were born in poverty, unless they were lucky enough to find a wealthy sponsor, like Michael Faraday.
        In any case, the worst “poverty” is to be born into a violent home, or worse, to be given up or neglected by your mother.

    Sure a whack with a hammer (or a crunch under boot) might be more humane, but an infant animal (newborn kitten or possum) is only vaguely conscious of its surrounding and threats. It also has a very small lung volume and no developed fear of drowning. So drowning is pretty humane.
    
    Juvenile/adult animals – nope it would not be humane to drown them.

      They say it is particularly cruel to drown new-born critters because they have a natural reflex to hold their breath.

        Most animals in the wild (and humans through most of history, and even today in many cases) die horribly painful deaths being ripped apart by predators or suffering excruciating pain bought on by illness, starvation and dehydration .
        
        By comparison drowning is pretty quick and relatively low pain, over in a few seconds if you are a small animal with a high rate of respiration. Reports from those who have lost consciousness in near drowning events do not paint that grim a picture, and highly motivated people can hold their breath to the point of loss of consciousness – so aside from fear/anxiety it can’t be that painful. It is massive and stupid over-reach to make it illegal, and the ridiculous overreaction to drowning of a few joeys is almost comically over-the-top.
        
        What about Halal killing (throat cutting?) Deliberate fish torturing (fly fishing etc)? Duck shooting (potentially long drawn out deaths with a few pellets lodged in them)? Pig hunting with dogs? Many people suffering through terminal illness (eg Mother Teresa’s victims). So many cases of (legal) worse.

    Against possums ? Plenty, shot hundreds of the damn things.
    
    An absolute pest, destroys trees (especially Pohutukawa and Rata), kills native birds, eats fruit off trees (usually before it’s ripe), spreads Tb.
    
    Didn’t have any friends from our area, and despite the odd child wanting to bring up an orphaned joey, none did.
    
    I don’t consider it cruelty to rapidly kill a pest animal, whether that be by drowning, blunt force trauma, shooting, poison, whatever. Cruelty would be to prioritize the suffering over the killing.

      Drowning should all be over in 30 secs. The fluid once ingested will fill the lungs and prevent oxygen reaching the brain. That causes lack of consciousness very rapidly. Death occurs later while out of it.
      Humane? Even the bolt gun used on cattle only causes brain shock; death follows at the hands of the slaughterman.

      Quite legal in those days and good for close kill shots. I even had a holster for it.

        Yes. I had one of them – great little weapon. Coming back from a hunt, and not getting a deer, if I saw a bunny reasonably close – say 20 meters – it was ideal for putting something in the pot. Wouldn’t waste a .303 round on it – would blow it to pieces.
        But this was back in the 60’s – 70’s. When I went to Australia in 1978, the bloody Aussies confiscated it because it was a pistol.
        It was great, because I could break it, and it would fit in my pocket – very easy to draw it, put a .410 shot up the spout, close it and shoot – all within a couple of seconds. A great little weapon.

I was watching Sunday on T.V 1 last night. What I thought was a current affairs program some how morphed into an ad for Hayley Holt and the Green Party. It was about young women binge drinking, and as luck would have it poor Hayley used to do that sort of thing. Fortunately she found redemption and is now campaigning actively and standing for the Greens. Why couldn’t they have used virtually anyone else in the country? I would have hoped for better from TVNZ, They’ve nailed their colours to their mast well and truly. Believe nothing they say.

        We would like you to come over here and spend approx. 50% of your time making films – such as films for politicians, films about the fellowship, films about the ground campaign here.
        
        You would spend the other 50% of your time participating in the fellowship in a more conventional sense – ie doing the same kind of thing as the other fellows.
        
        As stated, we would provide accommodation, basic groceries and fellowship-related travel. I don’t know if we could provide any filming equipment though.”
        
        I will be the first person within the program who has been offered a position to film short videos and documentaries of the ground campaign that the Labour Party (a sister party of the Democratic Party here in America) does to get people to go out and vote. As mentioned in the earlier email I will be able to meet with politicians both from New Zealand and from around the world. The opportunity that has been offered to me is something that I cannot turn down.
        
        However, the only obstacle standing in the way to fulfilling this fantastic opportunity is getting there. The fellowship only covers travel within Auckland, not to Auckland. Flights to Auckland can run nearly $1900 round-trip.

Any donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards paying for my flight to get over to New Zealand so that I can spend six weeks working with the New Zealand Labour Party and its many leaders. I will also use part of the money to purchase some modest camera equipment to bring with me over to New Zealand to film and edit the documentaries. I listened to part of the interview of the American Ambassador on Morning Report this morning.
Near the end Guyon Espiner brought up the recent Trump tweets regarding a reporter bleeding from a face lift & wrestling CNN. Scott Brown was clearly put on the spot. He’s a self confessed Trump die hard, but there was no way he was going to play along with that garbage.
He collapsed the scrum a couple of times and finally kicked the ball for touch after the final hooter.

She writes with all the aplomb of someone who has read about what Paul Keating said to John Laws back in the winter of 1986, but has never thought about it all that much – she sure as hell doesn’t remember it the way many people will. You come away from this 1000 words of shinola with the idea that Jess has never known debt and its impact on the national economy going bad, and probably has never been in a situation where she (or her family) owes a lot of money and is concerned about whether they will have a job in six months.       One curious coda to the RMA debate that concluded last week was that the Opposition parties plus ACT and United Future all voted again during the third reading debate for amendments that would have abolished Rural Urban Growth Boundaries and allowed the financing of infrastructure bonds paid for with targeted rates.
      
      The amendments were defeated by National and the Maori Party.
      
      The irony of a Government that has railed against restrictions on land development by councils voting against removing those restrictions should be noted. Britain’s legal vultures are now pursuing the British SAS for alleged atrocities in Afghanistan.

The Telegraph reports:

Leigh Day, which worked alongside disgraced solicitor Phil Shiner in the now infamous Al-Sweady Inquiry, is now involved in claims alleging members of the elite regiment executed unarmed civilians in Helmand Province during a hunt for Taliban leaders.

Sources told the Sunday Times the Royal Military Police (RMP) is investigating an incident in 2011 where a family of four were allegedly handcuffed, hooded and then shot by SAS soldiers.

Phil Shiner, a law professor, was struck off as a solicitor, and his firm went bankrupt, after the collapse of his campaign on behalf of Iraqis against British soldiers who had been in Iraq. He put forward more than 2,000 allegations of the total 3,400 but no single soldier was convicted of abuse.

Of course, such allegations need to be investigated, but surely by a Government and not by law firms following a money trail.

Leigh Day describes itself as “personal injury and medical negligence lawyers”. A few weeks ago it and three of its solicitors were cleared of allegations of professional misconduct over Iraq war murder compensation claims. Leigh Day worked with Shiner to represent Iraqi clients in parallel legal actions.

Foreigners have bought a 326 ha. dairy farm at Oxford from a local family for $18.2 million, reports the Southland Times.

They are also nibbling at the 40,000 ha. Mount White station, one of the largest pastoral leases in the country.

    Little countries like NZ – and the Central American republics – don’t have any muscle when it comes to nationalising assets, and most people wouldn’t want to sequestrate legally sold property. The time to restrict foreign ownership is when land is being bought.
    
    The lesson is to be careful about initial sales of your land. The Chinese have been buying up land in Africa, Australia, South America, as well as NZ. Brazil and Argentina, but foreigners can’t buy land in China.
    
    In recent months, Brazil has eased up rules on foreigners buying land, but is keeping restriction on farms with soy, corn and other crops which are harvested the same year as they are planted.

    They cite the harbour entrance blocked , but that’s due , not to climate change, but to a lack of dredging.

  I had a look on Wiki (as you do) and found that ultimately both Weet-Bix and Weetabix were created by the same Australian guy.
  
  Both Weet-Bix and Weetabix were invented by Bennison Osborne, an Australian. Weet-Bix was introduced in Australia through the company “Grain Products Limited” in the mid-1920s, with funding from businessman Arthur Shannon and marketing assistance from Osborne’s New Zealand friend Malcolm Macfarlane.
  
  To both Osborne’s and Macfarlane’s disappointment, Grain Products sold both its Australian company (in 1928) and then its New Zealand company (in 1930), to the Sanitarium Health Foods Company. Osborne and Macfarlane then went to South Africa where Arthur Shannon, the owner of Grain Products, funded another Weet-Bix factory.
  
  While in South Africa, Osborne modified his Weet-Bix recipe and with Macfarlane, obtained private funding and began the development of a new company, The British and African Cereal Company Limited, naming the new company’s product, Weetabix. The company commenced business in England in 1932 in an unused gristmill at Burton Latimer, near Kettering.[5] In 1936, the name of the company was changed to Weetabix Limited.

McDonald’s has responded to a furious customer’s complaint after he was served a raw chicken burger.

Right. So they checked daily food safety reports. Then they reviewed CCTV footage. Even then they’re only prepared to say that “it appears” the cause was human error. I guess they’re still investigating whether it was the chicken’s fault!

      If a business operated the way the C.C.C. do they would be insolvent.
      
      So take your message back to the old trot, and tell her that she and her lefttard council are an abomination.
