  I cannot stand Winston Peters, as far as I am concerned he still owes us all $158,000.
  However, if were to make as a bottom line in any coalition negotiations a total ban on Islamic immigration I would hold my nose and vote for the prick.

    He will not make it a bottom line, this diminishes his negotiating power too much. Labour/ Greens will not accept it as a bottom line and the National negotiators would realise this. In reality he would try and negotiate immigration and both contenders will agree to something, but not to all Winston wants.
    So the practical effect of voting Winston is there would be a 50/50 chance of a Labour/Green government supported by Winston with only a minor curb on Muslim immigration.
    The Machiavellian side of me would favour a Labour/Green/ Winston government to help clear the air. Winston would curb their left wing excesses.

7. Just in case you missed it…

One curious coda to the RMA debate that concluded last week was that the Opposition parties plus ACT and United Future all voted again during the third reading debate for amendments that would have abolished Rural Urban Growth Boundaries and allowed the financing of infrastructure bonds paid for with targeted rates.

The amendments were defeated by National and the Maori Party.

The irony of a Government that has railed against restrictions on land development by councils voting against removing those restrictions should be noted. And also that the proposal for infrastructure bonds was backed by the right-leaning New Zealand Initiative and voted for by the Greens and Labour. Strange times indeed.

        People turn their noses up at what people would have lived in two or three generations ago.
        
        Look at Cotons Cottage. It was considered pretty flash for its time. A whole 5 rooms (no, not bedrooms) including an attic bedroom for a family!
        
        Look at old Maori houses made of ponga and reeds. A family lived in a single roomed house, jsut the way they still do in many areas of Africa, PNG etc.
        
        Now I’m not saying people should not want to live in bigger and better houses, but people have lives in cheaper structures for tens of thousands of years. It’s just modern snowflakes that cannot cope!

        Check out the schedule of Dem Surveys at my archival website http://www.PerformanceUrbanPlanning.org to see how the average unweighted median multiples across the Irish metros went in 2007 from 4.7 to a few years later 2.8 … putting all their Banks to the wall … requiring a 70 billion euro plus of bailouts … about $109 billion New Zealand.
        
        It was the high multiple lending that did their Banks in according to the Central Bank of Ireland research a few years later. They then imposed a 3.5 times annual household income general cap.
        
        As the Dem Surveys illustrate housing prices in normal markets don’t exceed 3.0 time requiring mortgage loads of about 2.5 times.
        
        The Aussie metros are currently about 5.5 … the NZ ones about 5.9. Check this years Dm Survey schedules.
        
        Note the total bubble value of our housing market is a whopping $1 NZ trillion according to Core Logic … and our Banks capital base an extremely skinny $NZ 30 billion.
        
        Roughly $NZ500 – $600 billion of artificial bubble value to wipe out.
        
        It wont only be the bubble value wiped out of course.

        I like living in a nice house, but I don’t consider it a “right” to expect other people to furnish me with that house.
        
        And yes, I have hived for a few months in a house not much better than kraal-like conditions. No electricity or running water. Had to fetch water from a stream about 2-300 metres away.
        
        I have also lived for months in a tent – not much different.

  If it retains its value we can assume the money supply increase was backed by a positive perception of the economic situation in the county it was issued in.
  Money is no different than gold both simply have an agreed value in their respective market.
  
  In NZ we have the situation where the money created is being placed in the housing market on the expectation of an ever increasing capital gain without any increase of the return from the asset .
  Rents do not cover the cost of borrowing, rates and other outgoings.
  The ever increasing capital gain is created by councils, at the stoke of the pen, limiting the supply of new land at the same time immigration settings are increasing demand.
  I see risks.
  If the cost of borrowing rises the over extended investors collapse. This floods the market with cheap mortgage sales .
  From this we get a massive correction and huge amounts of wealth dissipates on the whims of the market.
  We face a global rescission and employment contracts leaving many unable to subsidize their investments resulting in mortgage sales. From this…….
  
  Those with a balanced portfolio of investments can weather or even profit from this storm .
  Those who have most of their wealth in housing not so good.
  
  We have seen the bubble burst before ……

    But the problem though is that the currency hasn’t retained it’s value has it? It is constantly inflated away at about 2-5% per year from all that money that Banks create out of thin air.
    
    Two litres of Milk is now $4.80 whereas a a generation ago it was under $2.
    
    Milk hasn’t got more expensive, our currency is worth less because Banks and Government “borrowing” has created so much of it.

There are a number of people commenting on the stuffed site about how with house prices being unaffordable we need to vote out National and let the Watermelons trash house pricing to make it affordable for those that don’t have housing.
What they completely fail to grasp is that a very large proportion of house owners have their entire savings tied up in their house instead of other savings schemes.
If you trash the values, then ALL of these people lose EVERYTHING. This means that suddenly we have to find even more money to support them in retirement.
So why would anybody who owns a property, business or anything that contains their savings, ever want to vote for a set of clowns that will cause you to lose everything?
Only the minority that won’t try to lift themselves up and the intellectually challenged who can’t understand the consequences would do that.
Until the incumbent does something that starts to impact on the pockets of the masses, the opposition in any form will remain the opposition.
It is a pity that reality economics is not taught at school.

  Take immigration as an example – both parties are just as complicit in allowing mega rich foreigners to come in here and buy up huge swathes of land and top end properties thus driving prices well beyond the means of locals.
  
  At the other end, they are both complicit in opening up the flood gates so that there is huge competition for low wage jobs thus keeping wages low.
  
  Add on top of that our debt as money system, an advertising industry in tandem with the MSM that promotes a shallow lifestyle of endless mindless consumption, an expensive and unsustainable welfare system that require huge taxation and inflation – “the system” is indeed rotten to the core.
  
  Your problem, as well as all the mindless drones commentating on the Stuff website is that you can’t frame the debate in something other than a National vs. Labour debate.

I am amused in that the Washington Post’s baby paper the Auckland Herald is take in verbatim from it’s mother the report that the Media has the right to violently denigrate their President and take exception to the fact that he hits back.
Of Course the so called media say that the standard of media representation has been lowered by their President’s behavior.
Nothing in taking some responsibility for the fact that Clinton, who bought, them failed to get elected under the US Constitution.
I am sure there’s a parallel here and now prevalent.
But they do not have the money that the US media have at their disposal.

I have used Google News as my home page. A few days ago they changed their layout etc. ( without notice) . I’ve gone onto the forums to try to sort out a problem I have with it and found this question

Several others asking the same thing. Looks like MSM appeal is divided all over.

Overall it is an interesting to look at how badly Google seem to have handled the change –they clearly don’t really understand how people ( both readers and publishers) have used their product.

BTW. If there is anyone else who uses it like I do have you worked out how to set NZ as the country of choice from the drop down menu and make STAY there without going back to the default of USA when you leave the page ?

        Basically all I’m trying to do is get NZ news for all categories ( except World of course). I can get it by clicking NZ on the drop down menu for countries and languages , but it just doesn’t stay there like it used to with the all version.

So the west has a FGM problem, too.

Girls as young as nine are seeking surgery on their genitals because they are distressed by its appearance, the Victoria Derbyshire show has been told.

Dr Naomi Crouch, a leading adolescent gynaecologist, said she was concerned GPs were referring rising numbers of young girls who wanted an operation.

Labiaplasty, as the surgery is known, involves the lips of the vagina being shortened or reshaped.

The NHS says it should not be carried out on girls before they turn 18.

In 2015-16, more than 200 girls under 18 had labiaplasty on the NHS. More than 150 of the girls were under 15.
