    And that’s why the first option is to put it out 2yrs or so, and not means test it?
    
    I’d guess they will next means test it for those above say $3mil and cancel theirs.

  There is always money for a universal pension as the government holds the chequebook. It’s production which funds them and we need faith in our long term prosperity. I see no sign of that failing. The baby boomers will go and another generation with lesser demands will replace them. Natural increase in GDP should provide.
  
  Kiwi Saver is a peculiarity: a funded scheme and gift to the insurance industry. These funded schemes have been surpassed by universal benefits where the cost of admin is a lot less. Separate investment and planning is not required either giving economic freedom. A problem now is to prevent Kiwi Saver contributions being deducted from eventual NS. Passing out KS to private control has reduced government ability to direct investment and manage foreign exchange requirements. KS creates inequities as it is mainly wage workers who contribute and they get subsidised savings. It may be that KS will have to morph into a peoples bank in time with the subsidies forming the capital.

In another twist to the “Trump vs. CNN wrestling match” meme, the people who run the MSM have gone hysterical that the creator of the meme is a so called “far-right/nazi/anti-semite/(insert word meant to shock here)” etc. due to him once retweeting an image that showed the vast over-representation from one particular ethnic background including CNN’s President, Chief Strategy Officer, Vice President, Executive VPs, Chief Political Anchor, Chief Political Correspondent, Sr. Legal Analyst etc.

Why such a double standard?

Have been reading articles recently regarding the huge and exponential increase over the last 20 years of mental patients in New Zealand.
I cannot see why this is so as the demographics have really changed little.
I know it is election years so every organisation is screaming for more money, including the mental health service workers, who do a great job.
The amount of money going into the overall health budget has grown by billions in recent years especially – so can anybody help me understand why particularly mental health has exploded.
Or is more being reported or are there greater vested interests involved.
What I cannot find is any trustable analytical breakdown figures.
Why are we really getting more numerically mentally affected ?

  Add to that the increase in single-mother households where many boys never get good male role models.
  
  Then add all the western guilt, climate change (the world is going to fry to a crisp and simultaneously flood and its all your fault for leaving a light on). Then add all the doom and gloom of robots taking your job.

    Much of this is due to the screwed up attention-seeking parents who want something to talk about.
    
    In the old days it was considered perfectly natural for a girl to be a tom boy and then find her femininity later in life.
    
    Same for the “mummy’s boy” that might like baking etc and then bloke up when they hit puberty.
    
    Both my sons grew long hair and one really liked pink (pink clothing, pink bedroom…) and were sometimes confused with girls. They’re both blokes.
    
    Now we see parents insisting their 6 year old is wrongly gendered. Bullshit. Wait until at least 20 to make any such determinations.

        I thankfully found someone who encouraged talking about this who helped me get over the weirdness of it all. I married her. That was 30 years ago and she’s still my rock.
        
        If the gin was for my mother… booze + drugs for mental issues tend not to mix that well.

      However it does take two to tango. Girls can keep their pants on too. The girls should be a bit more choosy about who they have babies with. ie. choose based on who’s going to be a good provider/father than who’s just a good root.

Eating humble pie

So odd! After the biggest rugby game since the RWC (maybe even bigger) and ….. silence on GD about last night’s game?

Maybe us Kiwis don’t love sport so much, maybe we only love winning?

Still, I’m here to eat my full helping of humble pie after suggesting yesterday that the ABs were sure-fire 20+ point winners. I was wronger than a wrong thing, wronger that CNN were about Hillary’s victory and wronger than Helen Clark’s airbrushed election hoarding picture all those years ago. Wronger than John Key’s flag vanity project. Wronger than Trump’s hairdo. Just plain wrong.

Still, it wasn’t boring – that’s for sure.

    Here they come all the people with an axe to grind.
    Barrett missed kicks,its his job to land them,don’t mention the certain try he save with an early intercept.
    Defence was strong and he ran well.
    Maybe Reads early second half penalty was the cause.
    Maybe the drop by Servia in the early stages contributed.
    Shouldn’t have got that scrum penalty to put us in front.
    
    Lions simply played well,to come over here play the the best regional teams and the draw a home series against the ABs who are two times world champs is a very good effort.
    
    I enjoyed it all and can live with the result.

  The ABs showed why they are World Champs. The Lions were happy with a draw according to Gatland. From the position they were in when awarded the penalty that drew the series the All Blacks would have attacked the line to put themselves ahead had they been trailing on the score board. They also attacked at the death where the impression was left the Lions would have kicked to touch. Have to mention the Lions lock Itoge, probably the best player on the night and most certainly world class – French referee not at all.

Paul’s: In 1950’s-70’s not many family’s had mother and father out working and children even though they did no have the equipment of today’s youth had parents that helped them study and were more hands on than the parent of today. Now days parents give and keep on giving to children’s demands because they like to have a social life also so when they come of age some can’t handle the expectations that some parents need them to meet and end up not being able to handle their failure.

  I blame SBW and Hansen for the mess last night.
  
  SBW was playing for the wrong code again and got confused last week. By having him red carded the ABs suddenly had to change their game plan at short notice.
  
  Hansen has put all his eggs in the one basket and went with SBW ahead of others who were loyal and more deserving.
  
  As payment SBW screwed concessions out of the ABs and has had a free ride. I believe handing out his medals to kids was just a PR exercise so we can sing his praises.
  
  This has bitten Hansen in his proverbial arse.

        You think? J Barrett and Laumape were outstanding last night. The Lions certainly never got through the area Laumape was defending, and his offload to Leinart-Brown to see Barrett score was as good as anything SBW could do.
        
        But my player of the series for the All Blacks was Codie Taylor. There was huge pressure on him to step and fill Dane Coles’ shoes, which he did, in spades. This series was Taylor’s coming of age. And the sin-binning apart, Jerome Kaino was a beast last night, and was probably not the player the AB’s should have subbed off last week after Williams’ red card.
        
        It’s sad that the match ended in such a shambles. Monsieur Poite lost control of the game in the last 10-15 minutes, was influenced far too much by the players of both sides, and made one critical error. World Rugby needs to accept some blame for the refereeing appointments. Peyper was adequate in the first test, but both Garces and Poite were all over the place, and neither team will have been satisfied with their respective displays. Angus Gardiner from Australia should have had at least one of the tests.

        SBW is a good athlete, and has some great skills. however he is over-rated as an All Black inside back, and unsuited to Test Rugby.
        His real skill set is much better demonstrated in Rugby League, where he should stay.

    My son was lucky enough to have an Olympic level hockey coach as his coach for a couple of years.
    
    He always told players that there is always stuff outside your control (the other team, refs, the weather,…) and there is stuff inside your control (you). Focus on the stuff you can control and don’t get riled up about the stuff you can’t control.

From people arriving at the airport with some obscure cup to mum winning the “Best cat at show” we seem to have to suffer with some form of “traditional” event consisting of half naked men poking out their tongues and screaming at the top of their voices.

As I posted on General Debate late last night, great game and a great result. Morally it should not have been a penalty (it is practically impossible for a player in a situation like that to avoid grasping at the ball, just as it is almost impossible for a player like Faumuina to pull out of a tackle in the situation that resulted in the winning penalty last weekend). You play and follow rugby long enough you know sometimes the calls go your way, sometimes they don’t. And on balance the Lions didn’t deserve to lose the series. Not like that, anyway. And it’s there in the record books forever, and makes them on the same level as the great 1955 Lions that drew the series in South Africa – Cliff Morgan, Jeff Butterfield, Tony O’Reilly, Phil Davies, Dickie Jeeps, Rhys Wiliams, Bryn Meredith. Now Warbuton especially belongs in that pantheon Really great captain and a class act, especially after missing out on selection in the first test.

      Fair call. No one is moaning about “Warrenball” now! Is a real testament to his coaching ability to do what he has in the last 6 weeks. The Lions is the toughest assignment in rugby – once every four years you start from scratch picking players and forming a team from players who are usually the most implacable of international rivals. And even though they have the best fans in all of rugbydom, all of your games are away from home.
      
      Speaking of which, maybe there was a series winner – the Lions fans. Great bunch of people. Kicked Kiwi rugby fans’ arse, and win, lose, or draw, they were always going to enjoy their time here. They were great i 32005 following a poor team. Now they got their reward.

  Agree that Ken Owen’s being offside was something of a bullshit penalty. But it was less of a bullshit penalty than Faumuina’s in the second test, and that one stood.
  
  Likewise, I agree that Kaino was properly yellow-carded last night for collecting Wyn Jones on the head. But I can’t figure how that was any different from Sean O’Brien clouting Naholo on the head in the second test, with Naholo clearly dazed if not briefly unconscious.
  
  The ABs just didn’t get the rub of the refereeing decisions in this series. Recognise that that is rugby, so not complaining about it too loudly. But also recognising it is a thing.

    I don’t think that the O’Brien swinging arm last week was clear and obvious to the ref and TMO. It was obscured and it was only when you looked closely for it, without the pressure of time to get on with the game, that you saw it – and like Wynn Jones last night, Naholo ducked into it. So it was unlike the Kaino tackle, which was in open play.
    
    Incidentally, I note that Longknives last night, in the heat of the moment and trying to avoid ponying up with substantive evidence that what Umaga and Mealamu did was intentional in 2005, tried to make a “character reference” connection between Kaino and the O’Driscoll incident in 2005. Desperate!
    
    He omitted mention of the O’Brien swinging arm – which, like Kaino last night was a mistimed and reckless thing (Wynn Jones did slightly duck, but Kaino was still responsible and you knew it was at least a yellow card straight away).
    
    But I think I know how it works with Longknives now, when it comes to applying Hanlon’s Razor (“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”) to the matter of unintentionally reckless vs intentionally dirty play-
    
    Overseas rugby player – is unintentional
    
    Brown New Zealand player – dirty!
    
    Brown Muslim New Zealand player – even dirtier!!
    
    New Zealand team coached by Graham Henry? – Dirtiest!

      Kimbo, I have long since given up on the embittered attacks by BB an Longknives on the All Blacks. It is irrational and on a continuum somewhere between twisted and fact free. I guess we have to accept that it is akin to D4J’s adulation of the Family Court.
      There were two issues involved in that incident last night. First –was Read’s challenge in the air in order, second, was it a penalty or scrum to the All Blacks. The former was a forgone conclusion. He went for the ball. Full stop. He turned to avoid a head to head collision went he realised that he would not get to the ball.
      A competent ref, with his wits about him, would have recognised the issues and at the same time, noticed that the NZ 12 had broken two tackles and was on his way to the line. A competent ref with his wits about him would have played the advantage rule.
      Maybe the try would not have been scored. Maybe the last tackle was half-hearted because the whistle had gone. The fact is, in this standard of rugby, the players deserve better.
      
      It did not matter if it was a scrum or a penalty. You do not blow the whistle the instant of occurrence. That simply suggests that you had no idea what happened and wanted time to think without the complication of on-going play.
      
      A good moral result? How do you measure. These lions were always going to be good. Predictions of a whitewash of the worst lions team to leave UK were nonsense drivellings of idiots who do not know rugby and wanted their names in by-lines –the sorts of idiots who think it is funny/clever to adorn the opposing coach with a ruffle and red nose. As you say, they were the gutsiest players to come here in a long long time. They also showed flashes of brilliance.
      
      At the end of the day, the series was there for the taking by the All Blacks but they were just not up to it. Silly mistakes (dropped passes by Savea and Barrett when the line was open) and inexperience (Laumape when he did not look for support earlier and ended up rushing the pass) cost.
      
      The result was a good reflection of where the All Blacks are at present. We saw a lot of potential and some brilliance (coincidence maybe that the one rule Poite really did understand was the off-side rule?). They are still re-building and establishing depth. I think Hansen’s priorities should be to look for somebody to step into Kaino’s shoes. Kaino still more than justifies his place in the team but we need a hard man to replace him. We also need to look for a competent backup number eight. Read played well but has a history of concussion problems and is of an age when he will start becoming injured more frequently.
      We are blessed in the backs. We need a backup for Ben Smith (fearfully, sooner rather than later) and we need one more wing with real gas. Hansen still seems undecided whether Naholo has a place or not. I think he should tell Crotty, Liennart-Brown, Laumape that they are there for the long haul. I like the look of Aso and Goodhue, also. Cruden has gone. It is either Sopounga or Mo unga. I am inclined to the latter.
      First, tho, I would tell Perenara that if he ever engages in histrionics trying to milk a penalty while the opposition is gleefully knicking the ball from under his nose and fleeing to the other end with it, he will have his testicles roasted over a bunsen burner.

        No. Not necessarily so. Again, you are arguing absence of intent means that no penalty should be incurred. Not so. Read, as Gatland argued, had unintentionally or not, invaded the space of the Lions player in the air. Also, the Lions player was off his feet, so contact should not have been made. nd it was that contact which dislodged the ball and drew the offside infringement.
        
        So that makes the rest of what you suggest a non sequitur. Mind you, as the ref didn’t penalise Read, I’m now in a place where the ref maybe got two calls wrong 😉
        
        And yeah, I can live with that. Is a just outcome.

        But by that measure a ref would never make a mistake. As you mentioned them, including our inability to take our chances, is Savea not also incompetent because he can’t catch a ball, or Beauden Barrett because he missed the second conversion, or Perenara for neglecting the ball at his feet?
        
        The ref’s initial reaction was instinctive – it’s a penalty, so he whistled accordingly. Then his second reaction was fully human too He second-guessed himself taking into account the enormity of the decision (as happened with Wayne Barnes in 2007, and Bryce Lawrence in the Wallabies vs South Africa 1/4 final in 2011, and Craig Joubert in the final that year)
        
        …and rationalised in his mind why a penalty should not be given.
        
        Well done by Warburton, btw, who has come out saying, after Scotland lost that 1/4 final in 2015, he thought about what he would do as a captain in such a situation – ask the ref politely yet firmly to check it and plant the seed of “accidental offside” in his mind. Brilliant clever captaincy, including the ability to think and anticipate in advance! You can argue it is a shame that “massaging” a ref’s thinking is so much a part of the game, but to me, a guy like Warburton does not deserve to lose a series, not on a shit rule like that.

        Glad to see you fired up Nookin. I’m cool and calm with it all, the game and series was dramatic – the AB’s never quite fired and I thought it would have been last night that they did. Need to give credit to the Lions for that, they injected a certain amount of uncertainty that flared time and again. The AB’s front row showed itself as the best in the world, the team was smart enough to get the ball into the line out quickly thus turning that part of the game around. The 20 year old Auckland winger has got the goods for the future and the Highlander’s and Hurricanes have each produced a potential no 6 of the Kaino mold. McKenzie remains on the list at fullback and has been possibly the best open running back in the super series. I agree about Aso. One extra game may have made the difference with Julian Savea he was hungry last night but the fine touch just escaped him and many others. As for Perenara that’s his game. Must mention the players who played their last game for the ABs last night, world cup winners all.

      Kimbo – that is just bullshit. Sorry but bullshit.
      
      O’Brien came in second or third man in with intent to dislodge the ball – hence the swinging arm. It was reckless and collected Naholo in the head. A clear foul on replay, just as Kaino’s was last night.
      
      O’Brien got away with it in game – that’s life and the rub of the green. But how it was judged in the citing tribunal as not worthy of a suspension is beyond me. Doesn’t have to be deliberate to cop a sanction…. player safety is paramount and O’Brien injured an opponent by hitting the head with a swinging arm…
      
      Naholo didn’t duck into it – he was turning in a gang tackle to present the ball and was being driven to the ground by the first in tacklers when O’Brien arrived and swung his arm in aiming to dislodge the ball….. but hit Naholo in the swede instead…

        However, I do agree that the subsequent judiciary got it wrong, as they had no such excuse. I think O’Brien was swinging his arm to try and get it under Naholo so they had a chance at holding him up.
        
        But, yes, you are right, as with Kaino last night, intent is irrelevant. Mind you, do you suspend a guy for what would have been yellow card offense on the field? 10 minutes off the field vs 80 minutes in the next game? Seems to be addressing one injustice with an even greater one.

        Well, the first Christians were accused by their critics of being “cannibals”. But I seem to recall trying to wrap my head around Aristotle (the Greek philosopher, not Jacqueline Bouvier’s second husband) and Aquinas who refined and clarified the doctrine, and I think the answer is, yes, you can be a Catholic and a vegetarian. The wafer becomes the literal body of Christ, but not protein. Something to do with the distinction between accident (a property that may have no real connection to what the thing is, like wood to a chair, or protein to a body) and essence (what it is, the body of Christ):

        The form was the so called Last Supper, the theme on that occasion seems to be about remembrance.
        
        Which would, if you saw the disciples as rabbi trainees, be a form of graduation. The bread symbolising the body of the teaching/message/word and the blood the spirit/class/way with which the work is to be done.
        
        Of course given the later development of the Temple priesthood replacement theology it became a cult of mediation of a sacrificial offering via communion.

        I am no theist, I do not take as “gospel” the word in the Torah, tanakh, NT or Koran. Mere men claiming knowledge of God and doing evil works, with their followers claiming supremacy before God to other humans.

        I have no problem with the 10 Commandment Keeping as a way of faith in God (there are married women who could bring this into tribulation) and I think the Sermon on the Mount was a good work of explaining it is a faith/ethical system, not part of a legal code.
        
        Sabbath Day keeping is an astute way to recognise the distinction between the eternal (ideal) and mortal man across generations (less than perfect).
        
        And even Moses demonstrated the difference between the wisdom of its formation and his own intellect. This when he admitted asking for the name of God and leading the covenant nation people in breach of the third commandment by claiming to know God’s name.

    My problem is that I can’t figure out how gluten proteins (gliadins and glutenins) can be transformed into flesh proteins (myosin, collagen, elastin and actin) so readily….

      Reading and thinking about it a bit more I get the impression that the Pope’s decision is based on the fact that it is not “bread” if it is gluten-free. Therefore, if it is not bread, it can’t be subject to transubstantiation. Plus, presumably to do things decently and in order, it can’t be raisin bread, or something festive. And due to the Passover feast on which the Lord’s Supper was initiated, it must be unleavened.
      
      Leavened bread isn’t an issue with most Protestants beyond the Anglicans and Lutherans. I once had communion in a service using a coconut, btw (flesh and water for the two elements). Is the “bread of life” for the Pacific island community. Greater flexibility is one of the benefits of being a Protestant! 😉

More than 80 per cent of Ontarians want to see home affordability issues addressed in the 2018 election platforms of provincial political parties, according to an Ipsos poll commissioned by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA) and the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO).

According to the Ipsos study, millennials are most intent on seeing home affordability addressed by party leaders. Nine in 10 Ontarians between the ages of 18 and 34 want parties to address the issue in the next election, compared to 82 per cent of Gen Xers. Furthermore, 88 per cent millennials stated they would be more likely to vote for a party whose platform promotes home affordability.

The three associations are aligned in advising that the solution to home affordability is increasing the supply of housing in the province, and thereby increasing choice for those seeking homeownership.

Our full left local board wants our smooth tar seal roads replaced with rough chip seal throughout our area, even though they are aware of the significant increase in noise, they believe it gives a nice gravel rural vibe. It is so loud, wrecks your car with loose chip, can’t be cycled on, is ugly, and increases your petrol prices. Is this Agenda 21 and an attempt to stop us visiting our parks and beaches. Is this global crazy or just local crazy. Anyways it’s bloomin’ annoying.

    The board wrote a guide for our area. They specifically said they want it because the like the rural gravel look. I think they want to make it increasingly difficult for people visiting the west coast beaches. They oppose most businesses and developments and don’t want more tourists. I agree it’s also cheap. But why are we spenindg 100’s of thousands of public rates money weeding private property. Then cutting costs on public roads.

Just back from a brief sojourn overseas and what a great time it was.
I never did any cultural activities, did not worry about my carbon footprint, never had any deep conversations about world peace and most of all never felt one bit guilty about spending whatever it took to enjoy myself.
Come back to NZ and the first thing to greet you is a fake kind of marae entrance arch and a monotonous recording of some women wailing on in Māori about some crap which no one can understand.
Enough to depress you again.

  S&S. I spend a bit of time wandering the world and like many Kiwis who are feeling over exposed to the public rituals of Maori culture, I know what you mean. But I suggest the experience might feel a bit different to tourists and overseas visitors, given so many international airports are drably unexciting. And that there is much interest in these rituals from many people overseas, probably won’t have escaped your attention.

So not really solar powered then…

“The car’s ability to run in any city with an electric grid, means that it does not need any special infrastructure, long an obstacle for electric cars.

The car’s solar panels are just there for show – to con the uneducated.

One square meter of solar panels will generate a maximum of 250W or so, in full summer sunlight. Let’s say that car has 6 square metres. That makes about 1.5kW or about 2 horsepower in best conditions in the old money.

That’s not even as powerful as a 50cc moped (about 5 to 7 horsepower for off the rack bikes).

Of course you’re not driving all the time, so you could store up some power in a battery (so long as you park in the sun), so that might give you a x3 or so benefit for short trips – 6 horsepower or so.

If it is night time, or cloudy you’re getting practically no power. The reason it’s a “family car” is you’ll need all the kids to push.

  Average power generated per day by a panel in NZ winter is about three times rated watts.
  1.5kwx3h=4.5kwh enough for 28km travel a day in a large powerful sedan. You would get about 1 .5 times that 42km in a small car like a leaf.
  
  Night time no power at all from solar.

The worst aspect to the rugby last night was the lax attitude of both teams towards Head Injury Assessments.

Alun Wyn Jones was clearly knocked out by Kaino’s careless tackle. By law, he should have been permanently removed from the game, yet he came back on as a substitute in the second half. And Kieran Read should at the very least have been taken off for an HIA after clearly being stunned in a collision, through possibly not losing consciousness.

World Rugby needs to get serious about head injuries, and there need to be strong sanctions against teams that abuse the rules. Last night, that included both the All Blacks and the Lions, and it’s a very bad look for rugby.

Tauranga is still well up in the effective bankrupt position as he left it.
His replacement in Tauranga was one whose contract was not renewed in Wellington.

In case you believed the news that Volvo was only going to make electric cars from here on out –

Volvo’s announcement was met with universal praise from left-wing U.S. media; it was also universally mis-reported. “Volvo Vaults to Volts, Planning to Pull Plug on Gasoline Engines” Bloomberg’s headline blared. “Volvo going electric, phasing out gas and diesel engines,” read the Seattle Times’. “Volvo Moves to Phase Out Conventional Engines,” declared the New York Times.

Not quite. In truth Volvo’s decision will help perpetuate the internal combustion engine, which still makes up the overwhelming majority of vehicle sales. While the automaker will add a plugin-hybrid option to every model line and build five all-electric cars beginning in 2019, its core, best-selling gas- and diesel-engine variants will simply add a small, 48-volt battery to compliment existing twelve-volt batteries.

Where traditional twelve-volt batteries turn on a car’s lights and infotainment systems, the 48-volt unit will help power the influx of electric features — steering racks, brake pumps, etc. — into modern cars, while increasing fuel economy by 10–20 percent in order to satisfy looming Chinese and European CO2 mandates. (Europe will force automakers to reduce the CO2 emissions of their vehicles to 95 grams per kilometer by 2021.) In short, contrary to news reports that Volvo is ending gas engines, the company is merely making such engines compliant with the coming rules.

“Sensationalist headlines today suggest Volvo is going 100 percent electric and ending gasoline and diesel engines,” wrote auto-industry analyst Anton Wahlman. “The Volvo announcement was not (about) going to 100 percent EVs. It wasn’t even about setting an end-date for gasoline or diesel cars. It was about making 48 volt systems standard in all cars.”

    Instead, it simply said that it would have two new chassis architectures for every car and SUV it will launch from 2019 onwards. These new architectures will support three different electrified powertrains: a gasoline engine with a 48-Volt mild-hybrid system, a plug-in hybrid (PIH) system (with both gasoline and electric motors) and a full battery-electric (BEV) system.The first two levels of electrification would be available in all Volvos, while BEV power will be the high-priced option on only three Volvo-branded cars .
    
    Now, Volvo’s target is to sell a million electrified cars by 2025, but there’s a lot to be careful of in that wording. “Electrified” doesn’t mean “Electric”, and that’s the biggie. Secondly, it wants to sell a million electrified cars by 2025. That’s a million in total, counting from now, not a million per year. Thirdly, when Samuelsson used the word “solely”, he meant its future internal-combustion engines would be helped by a soothing electrical hand, not be shoved out of the engine bay altogether.
    
    That’s not to throw shade at Volvo, but at the journalists who have misrepresented or misunderstood what Volvo’s announcement really means.

        Hey, I’m not against innovation. I am against green technologies being misrepresented as being pollution-free, and better for the environment when, more-often-than-not, the reverse is true. What we don’t get told about is the pollution that occurs during manufacturing or the waste caused by trying to dispose of these technologies when they wear out. A case in point: the massive problem of pollution caused by used solar panels –
        
        Solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of energy than do nuclear power plants.
        
        If solar and nuclear produce the same amount of electricity over the next 25 years that nuclear produced in 2016, and the wastes are stacked on football fields, the nuclear waste would reach the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (52 meters), while the solar waste would reach the height of two Mt. Everests (16 km).
        
        In countries like China, India, and Ghana, communities living near e-waste dumps often burn the waste in order to salvage the valuable copper wires for resale. Since this process requires burning off the plastic, the resulting smoke contains toxic fumes that are carcinogenic and teratogenic (birth defect-causing) when inhaled.

Thought Uber meant cars? Here in Jakarta you have Uber motorbike rides. And next to the Uber guy is a GoJek rider (one of over 200,000) — they not only provide passenger rides, but collect laundry, deliver medications, take in your dry cleaning, collect theatre tickets and deliver to go (take out or take away) food. Currently GoJek is averaging 500,000 rides a day in Jakarta, resulting in the company having a market valuation of US$4B. It took a massive 4 years though. I recently met the founder, Nadiem Makarim. He says the service has spawned whole new industries. For instance, the demand for to go food surpasses the capacity of conventional restaurants, and has created food preparation establishments too small to seat in-house diners, but perfect to supply the army of GoJek delivery riders, thus forming a truly symbiotic relationship between food preparers and deliverers.
