Could somebody please set out – in the factual, unbiased sort of way that we wish journalists would use – exactly what was the story about Bill English and the housing allowance claim?

I see it cited as establishing some sort of moral equivalence between the PM and Metiria Turei, but not knowing the whole story (as a relative newcomer to NZ) can’t judge the merit of that argument.

  Bill English claimed a housing allowance for his property in Clutha as his main residence when he was living with his family in Wellington.
  MP’s are entitled to claim this allowance under certain circumstances.
  BE was given advice that he met these circumstances.
  Turns out he didnt meet them. This was established by an audit. The same audit said he was misinformed and did not do it on purpose.
  BE was entitled to claim an allowance but not this one.
  BE paid back in full the total amount claimed without being asked to.
  BE has never claimed the allowance he was entitled to since.
  
  That is my understanding of the situation.

      It doesn’t take a genius to understand the rules, what was being claimed and why it was incorrect to claim. Even if it was within the rules, it would be morally incorrect to claim a large sum of public money.
      
      In that regard, Kleva’s summary may be correct but is disingenuous to suggest BE was just the “victim” of wrong advice.

The rift with Australia caused by one of her MPs is showing her inexperience. She has gone to ground but so has Hipkins. We are in the big time now and we need too see what Arden is made of if she wants to be PM. She is vulnerable to the argument that she’s is too inexperienced and we are starting to see that.

  If she can’t handle questions over nothing, how on earth can she expect to handle the really hard questions she would get as PM?

  The failing newspaper can’t bring itself to speal ill of the tooth fairy. Their head line “Barry Soper: Jacinda Ardern has a John Key moment” has to swing it against John Key ( who is JohnKey?).

  I agree, but as I am saying on the other thread, I am not going to defend bumbling incompetence, hubris and hissy fits just because it is “our side” or “our friends” doing it. The Aussie Liberals look very, very stupid over all this. They are the ones who made the bed on this issue in the first place, now they have to lie in it. Furthermore they are just grasping at every opportunity to make it look like a conspiracy just because some MP in NZ asked a parliamentary question about it, which was unnecessary to prove whether it was in NZ law or not. Kiwibloggers were finding the relevant words in old statutes entirely unaided, just yesterday.
  
  I am not impressed with our Aussie friends now playing schoolyard bullies on something that is their own stupid fault. I am not a Labour supporter and don’t want them in government, but I actually feel sorry for Jacinda over this particular incident.

      Bronagh acted like a lady all during her husband’s time as PM, not one foot wrong. I will go with lax etiquette as who really cares.

BBC are about to run a doco on a gender neutrality experiment at a UK school. The instigator of this experiment, a Dr Javid believes “that boys’ and girls’ brains are almost identical”.

Wrong: In the new study, a team of researchers led by psychologist Stuart Ritchie, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Edinburgh, turned to data from UK Biobank, an ongoing, long-term biomedical study of people living in the United Kingdom with 500,000 enrollees.

Adjusting for age, on average, they found that women tended to have significantly thicker cortices than men. Thicker cortices have been associated with higher scores on a variety of cognitive and general intelligence tests.

Meanwhile, men had higher brain volumes than women in every subcortical region they looked at, including the hippocampus (which plays broad roles in memory and spatial awareness), the amygdala (emotions, memory, and decision-making), striatum (learning, inhibition, and reward-processing), and thalamus (processing and relaying sensory information to other parts of the brain).

So, one chap has a hunch that kids brains are identical, while a scientific study of 5000 brains shows otherwise.

When it was suggested this experiment might harm the children involved Dr Javid responded with, and I paraphrase, “Trust me. I’m a Dr, and this is the BBC”.

This is the problem with the outrage industry , they are so extreme. For goodness sake the hotel was popular with Jews because it was so accomodating ,and one slip up causes such outrage they want it closed ? Ridiculous.

‘On Tuesday the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which confronts anti-Semitism and promotes human rights, published a letter asking Switzerland to “close [the] hotel of hate and penalise its management”.’

  No hotel in its right mind would want to upset guests in such a way. You would have to confirm that the Swiss hotel responsible for the sign had sufficient English-native-speaker levels of awareness of the relationship between the words “Jewish” and “showers.”
  It is possible that if the sign was written by a 20-something English speaker with no knowledge what happened 70 years ago and they might not have been aware of the historical association. In addition, this association might not be so well known in Switzerland (I am just guessing).
  The hotel will have all the paperwork for the commissioning of the sign, and will be aware of who wrote it and who signed it off.

    Tom Scott’s cartoon in the DomPost today is classic lefty distortion on that very point. He depicts a face-off between a bunch of swastika-waving hoodlums and a bunch of decent-looking housewives, grandpas, children, etc. Not a face mask or baseball bat in sight on that side.
    
    And Trump saying something ridiculous and ambiguous, in which I am not sure what Scott’s point was. Perhaps you have to be a fellow lefty to assume what Scott means to be assumed.

  It seems from reports that the police did not protect the protestors but left them to the mercy of the antifa people who were armed and started the confrontation. It appears that white people who are protesting about the removal of the Robert E Lee statue do have a point. Yes there were kkk people and neo nazi people as well but the idea that white people can protest about the removal of one of their heroes is a legitimate point.
  
  I think the left were spoiling for a fight and also have another go at Trump and charge him for being racist. Weak kneed democrats and weasels like Bill Kristol have joined in the condemnation of Trump.
  
  I thought what Trump said was pretty good. He condemned violence on both sides and there was violence on both sides.

I hope the president will raise the revising of history in Germany next, where it is illegal now to fly a Nazi flag and where all statues that record that era have been removed.

    Actually the American colonials were pissed off with the British Parliament, and called on the King, whom they respected, to intervene. Their British equivalents had representation in that Parliament and they didn’t. Universal suffrage was of course still a long way off but democracy was partially there and evolving.

As well as holding two three-hour sessions with government representatives, the committee will take into account reports from the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Action for Children & Youth Aotearoa, Peace Movement Aotearoa, Save Our Unique Landscape and other non-government organisations.

Examples of where the Government has fallen down on compliance include the New Plymouth District Council (Waitara Lands) Bill, Ihumatao and the Special Housing Area in Mangere, the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary, deep-sea oil seismic exploration and drilling, and the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011;

There are also concerns around the care and protection of Maori children, the treatment of Maori children in state care, and access to education, health services and a minimum standard of living for Maori and Pasifika children;

Some submitters has also alleged institutional racism and structural discrimination in the administration of justice, employment, and the health system. ”

It was 40 years ago when my family exposed the realities of Owairaka Boys Home and State child care. Control situations attracts sadists.

A Cabinet Minister resigned, inquiries held, legislation passed, review committees appointed, compensation offered after great stress and the saga continues. My two young boys then were brutalised by the State. One never survived the other now 56 won’t go near the compo offer because of the stress involved. He’s made a life for himself in Australia. He fled NZ because of Owairaka and so we were deprived of him.

I don’t know a solution to state violence in child care. Every generation may have to root our the baddies. Children are still held in Police cells.

I seldom agree with SD but this may not be inappropriate.

  What puzzles me about this ‘idea’ is the notion that they could provide 80 ‘professional’ social workers over the next three years. Where are these people going to come from? If it takes, say, 4-6 years to qualify as a social worker (according to CareersNZ), and then some time to become experienced, Labour haven’t a hope in H… of getting even half that number in the first couple of years UNLESS they strip them from other parts of the country OR they bring in immigrants.

New Zealand Post is abandoning Fast Post, as it continues to change into a mainly courier company.

Conventional postal mail is on the way out, replaced by internet and cellphones in communciations and by couriers in parcels.

I feel sorry for some old folk trapped in letter mail for communications, and for some of the remoter rural areas where courier service is expensive. However, it’s hard to see any way around their problem, though I think the Government may already subsidise rural mail.

NZ Post made a profit of $141 million in 2016. According to its cash accounts, NZ post paid $1.273 billion to suppliers and employees, and took in only $1.041 billion. A dividend of $23 million form Kiwibank didn’t make up the difference, but $371 million in interest revenue did.

I’m of the opinion that this is because after the election Little will once again be Labour leader and The Thief will once again be co-leader of the Greens.   He was easily recognised as he always wore Doc Martens boots, a long trenchcoat and carried an old leather doctors bag.

While watching Question Time in Parliament this afternoon I decided to keep a eye on Andrew Little to see how he reacted and the result was that facial activity shown that he is a very angry man with very little to offer. Even when asking a question of Judith Collins as Labour Justice spokesman his expression showed how bitter he is and surely Labour need to energize and remove this ex Leader for more enthusiasm or lance the Head of the festering sore.

Chair of Transparency International Jose Ugaz stated on 1 August 2017 at Wellington meeting that John Key should be investigated over the Panama Papers.‬

How do I know?

I was at that meeting and heard Jose Ugaz myself.

Any NZ or international mainstream media going to follow up with an investigation into John Key and the Panama Papers?

      These Maori kids are surely no different.
      They suffer poverty..racism ..and most of all probably the absence of a father figure.
      Their mums could have smaller families but that goes against their sexist culture.

        They haven’t been yet & it won’t happen in the future either. The settlements are in the hands of the tribal hierarchies……those who stayed on the land & didn’t join the exodus to the cities.
        
        A good proportion of young Maori wouldn’t even know who their father was never mind their whakapapa.

        Strangely enough, their memorial building fests coincided with the Jim Crow laws used to disenfranchise African Americans, the resurgence of the KKK and the modern civil rights movement.

The Police, quite rightly, are highly concerned about the latest meth freak at loose with a screwed up brain & a semi auto rifle. Therefore it’s interesting to go back on the history of P in NZ.
