  Thanks, where do I look for the numbers? If Labour were government the reduction would not have occurred and the monies would’ve disappeared into a slush-fund to satisfy their needs never to leave money in our pockets. National isn’t stressing enough that a vote for Labour is a vote for increased taxes…and Labour continue to dream-up more taxes. I recall about 30 years ago an aging accountant told me he’d only ever made decent money when Labour was in power as he was full time assisting clients to avoid Labour’s humanity-hating tax regimes.

      As a rider who is currently bike’less, how many of those that came off, did so whilst trying to avoid a car/truck/person/pushbike/animal or other things?
      How many of those took evasive action due to an idiot in a metal cage cutting them off, driving straight at them, changing lanes into them etc?
      As a country we care so little for our riders that we try to kill them at any opportunity. (We forget that we should only kill cyclists)
      Look at other countries where motorbike riding is encouraged and where the penalties and costs are allocated to who actually causes the accident, or countries where motorbikes outnumber cars and see how they protect their riders.
      Yes there are idiots that ride too fast, ride aggressively and are generally accepted as temporary citizens, but they are the minority.

        Hey dime… Sure, the principle is important, but what is the principle here?
        
        If you’ve got 20 bikes then sure, you can’t ride them all at the same time.
        
        But maybe you and mrs dime each ride a bike and maybe you have 18 kids (??pennies??) who ride the rest.
        
        Perhaps there is a more equitable solution than charging per bike, but it is hard to see any solution that would make everyone happy.

    Unfortunately ACC doesn’t look for “cause of”, only “involved in”.
    
    I did a survey a few months ago and the question of motorcycle ACC levies was discussed. I can’t remember the exact figures, but ACC income from motorcycle levies was something like $22 million, but care paid for those involved in motorcycle accidents was something like $100 million. As I say I can’t remember the exact figures, but there was a large disparity, so you can take solace from knowing that car drivers are paying for ACC care of motorcyclists.
    
    I should note that I am a motorcyclist. I will also disclose that I was involved in a slow speed (maybe 30kph) incident last year in rush hour traffic which had severe outcomes. A total 11 days in ICU, 3 weeks total in hospital, 2 months off work. Collapsed lung, 14 rib breaks, shoulder fracture… Never in my wildest dreams did I think a collision at such a slow speed would result in so much damage.
    
    SO I don’t complain about ACC levies too much anymore…

      I don’t know what happened in your case, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re a safe rider that never takes risks.
      
      I have not ridden much, but I used to borrow one of my brother’s bikes on occasion. It really opened my eyes to how many risks most (or at least many) motorcyclists take.
      
      I didn’t weave through traffic, didn’t speed and rode very defensively. It took me twice as long to get anywhere as the other blokes.
      
      One bloke broke his leg and started riding again with his broken leg in plaster (he made a hook thing on the side of his bike to hold his broken leg). He had another crash, broke the other leg, and ended up with both legs broken at the same time from two different accidents.

    If you want to bleat how ACC was constructed, then go back to the 1972/75 term: Labour, Norman Kirk, most recently amended in 2001 by: Labour, Helen Clark.
    
    ACC is a blameless system. It looks at costs, not fault.
    
    Farmers pay higher ACCs than office workers not because farmers are more to blame for their accidents, but because farming accidents are more expensive to treat than paper cuts.
    
    ACC levies for motocycles are higher because a motorcycle rider is far more likely to end up damaged needing expensive treatment. Some of that is down to motorcycles being inherently less safe in an accident and some must also go to the generally more twattish behaviour of motorcyclists.
    
    Car vehicle safety has improved dramatically: airbags, body design, crumple zones, traction control etc. This vastly reduces damage to passengers hence reducing ACC costs. Hence ACC levies have reduced.
    
    Motorcycles are a really shit place to be in an accident of any sort. Yes, I’m aware that some top-end bikes now have airbags on the handlebars, but those do very little in the grand scheme of things. Therefore ACC levels don’t get reduced.
    
    But still, most motorcyclists do not ride safely. Almost all weave though traffic, accelerate aggressively and speed. Very few ride defensively.

The uproar from National and resident KBers wasn’t about a Water Tax being investigated or implemented but more that Labour, after several months talking about how they have a solution then going on to release a one page policy document devoid of details, $ per litre etc or what economic benefits their policy would provide.
  
  National appear to be investigating a well researched water levy, and based on that research if found to be viable it will be founded on the economic benefits and not just pulled out of David Parkers arse as a talking point to fill newspaper print.

  I’ve got no problem with people carrying knives. I have problems with people poking them into each other.
  
  Sikhs with knives are like well brought up country kids with guns – they are brought up respecting the weapon and are taught from a young age not to bugger about with them.
  
  I normally carry a knife or two with me and asked a cop about it. Basically if you are well behaved and don’t pose a threat to society then they don’t care.
  
  Lets use evidence instead of emotion: until Sikhs show up in knife fighting/armed robbery statistics let them carry their knives.

        Nothing wrong with saying “good people” . That is clearly an opinion expressed about an aggregate.
        
        It is of course not an assertion that every single Sikh is good. I’m sure there is at least one that is not.
        
        It would be grossly unfair to Sikhs to equate them in any way with Muslims. Sikhs don’t have it written in their books to kill non-Sikhs.
        
        Islam is a different thing entirely. If you are not killing the infidel then you are not doing Islam properly.

    The density of Maori south of Kaikoura was quite light, and they lived on the coast.
    
    Kaikoura is about the limit for successful growing of kumera, and so the diet would have been mainly fish.
    
    They wouldn’t have fared well in inland Otago and Southland in winter frosts with the poor clothing they had.
    
    Is there any evidence of Maori being in the Southern Alps, except to harvest greenstone, and that would have been in summer?

      When Heaphy and Brunner trekked down and up the west coast in 1846 there were less than 100 Maori on the whole west coast (including the ones that the Maori they did encounter told them about). South Island Maori had tiny numbers.

      Years ago I was shooting deer out of Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu.
      
      There was a raised area up river called camp hill and locals told me that this is where West & East Coast Maori would meet and trade.. Greenstone etc for food.
      
      Basically the South Island Maori was reasonably peaceful and more interested in growing root crops. Although west coast Maori grew crops they were limited because of the damp climate.
      
      Greenstone that was found on the west coast was not available on the east coast….
      
      The North Island Maori were a problem as they came down on their seek and destroy missions to pick up greenstone for weapons etc and slaves for eating.

        Seems unlikely to me. There is a lot of very inhospitable land to traverse across central otago with big rivers and difficulty in food foraging to get there. Also cold glacier fed rivers and lakes to cross. Wakatipu is only ~10-12°C. The west coast bush is pretty hard to move through, and following rivers is damned hard (read Heaphy/Buller accounts of their trek). I suspect it is more likely they did any commerce in boats around the coast, with the coast being a dependable source of shellfish.
        
        That said Maori would venture inland in summer months to catch eels etc in high country lakes – probably worked their way up river courses and fattened themselves up to act as their own food storage for leaner winters.

      Yep, Once they had eaten all the Moa, Seals, Penguins, Kiwi etc that once teemed around NZ they had to somehow forage enough seafood (probably highly reliant upon eels too) to survive even through the cold of winter. That must have been incredibly hard to do with their appallingly crappy housing, clothing and lack of footwear. I believe the inability to grow gourds in SI for meat storage also had an impact on their population numbers.

I see convicted money launderer William Yan will keep his controversial New Zealand citizenship.

He was granted citizenship in 2008 by Shane Jones, then a Minister in the Labour government, against the advice of Internal Affairs who believed Yan did not meet the “good character” requirements.

But Jones, now a candidate for New Zealand First in the upcoming election, granted citizenship anyway on humanitarian grounds.

This led to accusations of political bias as Yan had forged links with a number of MPs, particularly in Labour, who lobbied in support of his citizenship bid.

This did, and still does stink.

  If taking water and putting it into bottles and then exporting it is more profitable than taking water and spraying it onto fields and putting cows on those fields and getting the cows impregnated and taking their calves away and milking them and putting the milk into a bottle or turning it into a powder and then exporting that, meanwhile degrading the quality of the water – then switching to the bottled water business is exactly what farmers should do.

In the UK Labour MP Sarah Champion has resigned from the shadow cabinet after she was criticised for penning an article in The Sun acknowledging the fact Pakistani Muslim men target white girls for sexual grooming.

“Britain has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls. There. I said it. Does that make me a racist? Or am I just prepared to call out this horrifying problem for what it is.”

Ms. Champion is the MP for Rotherham, where 1,600 girls were drugged, beaten, trafficked, and raped by mainly Pakistani Muslim men over a 10-year period.

However, left-wingers and supporters of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn quickly attacked her for writing the article, accusing her of “racism” and “Islamophobia”, and demanded she resign.

The left. More focused on virtue signalling, than on the plight of abused children. Shame on them, and also, shame on Champion firstly for bowing to pressure to resign, while saying the paper should have published her letter anonymously.

It seems that incoming CEO’s like to re-jig the top levels of the organisations they are appointed to to show they are ‘doing something’ and because they would rather have people the CEO appointed than those there before. IMO the State Services Commissioner should signal very strongly to CEO applicants that any prospective changes in the organisation structure require a sign off from stakeholders (ie the Commissioner and the responsible Minister) and need to be for good reason.

If when he got David Duke’s endorsement when he ran for president and he said immediately, “I disavow David Duke” that would have satisfied the media for maybe one day.
Then the next day he would have been asked again, “so you disavow David Duke?”
In the public’s mind he’s starting to be associated with David Duke. The average viewer would start to think, “did he have something to do with David Duke in the past?”

And then the next day he would be asked about it again and again he would disavow David Duke and the impression is starting to become concrete in the public’s mind- Donald Trump definitely has something to do with David Duke.

The left knows this and the leftist media are dancing to the tune. Let’s ask Trump to disavow David Duke at every opportunity and that will help bring him down as the public forms the impression of an alliance with Trump and David Duke.

That’s why Trump is not dancing to their tune about Charlottesville and condemned both sides. The antifa side was dressed in black uniforms, had clubs and shields and even waved red flags of the Soviet Union!

But no one has asked Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to disavow antifa and disavow communists. It’s interesting that the governor originally denied them a permit but they went to court and won. So it looks like they were set up instead. Governor got back at them by the police herding them past Antifa protesters and the police then sitting back and doing nothing during the violence from orders on high.

        On a more serious note, the problem that Duxton was perhaps alluding to is that when you judge the past through an ideological lens and treat everyone and everything as part of some simplistic morality play is it is only a matter of time before everyone is flawed. For example, by the standards of radicals like Malcolm X, MLK was at least to some extent an “Uncle Tom” in not subscribing to “by any means necessary”, and instead espousing non-violence.

  More to the point, a Left wing liberal rioting is not morally superior to the Right; and while some may claim the liberal Left has ‘nicer’ or more acceptable ’causes’, their oppression and suppression of others’ freedom is equally bad, let alone their tendency to do it by physical as well as verbal attack. They don’t just criticise opposing views; they seek to suppress them in entirety and to an increasing extent by dehumanising and destroying anyone with a non-Liberal/Left-tribal view.
  
  The Liberal/Left are remarkably ‘parental’ – not least in their bizarre belief that ‘children’ only learn what they say – they don’t; they learn everything that you do and say and the more powerful message is what you do. The message of the Liberal/Left is not ‘be nice’. It’s get as much power as you can, whether politically or physically, and force others to obey by any means, up to and including their total destruction.
  
  It’s neither a successful parenting strategy nor a successful relationship strategy, and in a situation where there is no option but to share the same environment, all it can lead to is increasingly extreme violence. Ultimately, they’ll have to separate if only through death – because there’s no new territory to emigrate to.
  
  You only have to watch The Project – which is like a nauseatingly childish virtue-signalling puppet show morality tale – complete with hysterical giggling ‘smiles’. It’s clearly targeted at children/youth whether in age or development.
  
  They have Paul Moon on talking sense about the above. Then they go straight back to their moralising oppression of any dissent – complete with justifications and rationalisations of why they should keep doing it, capitalising on their ever-present demonisation of Trump.
  
  Trump is actually trying to talk sense. However badly he does it, he’s simply and desperately trying to enact what Paul Moon is talking about and have some social process to dialogue about stuff between all American citizens.
  
  I’ve said before, I think it’s too late – ‘Charlottesville’ is the only way social process can go, because the Liberal/Left have decided that neo-Nazi process is the right way to go – just from their particular perspective.
  
  That is: “Gleichschaltung was the process by which Nazi Germany successively established a system of totalitarian control and coordination over all aspects of society, “from the economy and trade associations to the media, culture and education”.

Given the over-excited commentary we get here at times that sometimes turns the place into an echo chamber, maybe he’s not the one with his head stuck in the sand. I note with some dismay that it appears the great Australian lock forward John Eales has fallen on hard times. I say this because it appears that Mr Eales is about to front a TV programme which makes the laughable claim that the greatest regret of Mr Eales rugby life is turning his back on the highly embarrassing NZ rain dance.
This is, without doubt untrue. I can only assume that Eales needs the money so badly that he is forced to use his good name to promote such rubbish.
Actually, having said that he must be more desperate than I thought given that this programme (which will result in masturbation on an industrial scale by small minded, myopic fans of the NZ team) will only be shown in NZ. Clearly a programme of this sort has no commercial value anywhere else in the world. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, sometimes it is highly embarrassing being a Kiwi, even more so when we insist on telling never ending lies about the national rugby team.

  I can’t think of anything more degrading than having to do a spear dance in public and would have refused to do it hence making myself ineligible for a national team.
  When I used to watch Rugby on TV I always waited till the dance was over before watching. Now I don’t bother to watch it at all.

    I have often thought the same thing when it comes to the NZ national bulrush team. They (the Bulrush players) are often dragged off to live in third world conditions on some horrendous marae before their annual shellacking at the hands of the Aussies yet very few of that NZ bulrush team are actually maori.

Civil forfeiture whereby the US government simply confiscates the possessions of tens of thousands of black people without due process on suspicion of items being the proceeds of illegal acts is fair and balanced. I also agree that Title XI needs to be expanded so that sex in College is simply made an illegal act altogether.   Andrei, it’s interesting that some of the Confederate folk who left the United States after the Civil War came as far as New Zealand, and even Fiji.
  
  Someone can correct me, but I think Chris Laidlaw, the former All Black and diplomat who for years ran the Sunday morning show on Radio Labour (and much better than the present host), was a descendant of the South’s General Jackson.
  
  At least one British officer who volunteered and fought for the Confederates ended up in NZ. There has been publicity about this, but I don’t recall his name.

After they lost to the Union more than a few Confederates fled to the Pacific, as well as Latin America. They set up as cotton farmers in Fiji, imported slave labour from the New Hebrides, and in the early 1870s formed a branch of the Ku Klux Klan there, which terrorised locals and helped destabilise the indigenous government, so that King Cokabau eventually asked the British for protection. In the 1870s and ’80s Queensland got the nickname ‘the new Louisiana’ because of the vast plantations worked by slave labour.

There were many veterans of both sides of the Civil War who settled in New Zealand. Some fought in the Waikato War and other local conflicts. Kendrick Smithyman spent his early years in a 1920s nursing home which his parents ran in Te Kopuru, and he remembered a couple of elderly residents who had fought on opposite sides of the Civil War. When they encountered each other in the hallway of the rest home they’d engage in sword fights with their canes…

I spoke last night at the launch of a new book by Ted Jenner, one of NZ’s foremost scholars of Greek thought and the classical world. Ted has a furrowed brow and weak eyes, on account of having to read so much in an effort to keep up to speed with research on his subject. When he brought out a set of translations of the burial poems of the Orphic mystery cult a couple of years ago, the handful of poems were dwarfed by more than a hundred pages of footnotes and references to the scholarly literature.

  If the Confederate statues should come down in the southern states of the USA, on similar ground you might argue some NZ statues should come down.
  
  For example, Queen Victoria’s statues and the parks and institutions named for her. It was in Victoria’s reign that Indians were indentured to work in Fiji. Scott Hamilton may tell us whether this was slave labour.
  
  For example, Boer War memorials. They are pretty much to our dead in a war that was fought to protect or expand colonial expansion.
  
  For example, Dick Seddon’s statue outside Parliament. He was responsible for NZ annexing the Cook Islands, and was angry that Britain agreed to America annexing Hawaii.
  
  I suspect some pacifists would like war memorials taken away.
  
  Perhaps we should regard our old statues as we regard the memorabilia of Roman emperors. Who regards these as being support for the slavery of the times or for the emperors’ imperial atrocities?

      As for context, Spartacus remains a hero to many, thousands of years after he led a slave revolt. In comparatively recent times there have been a ballet and a film about him. In the Spanish Civil War there was a Spartacus Battalion of volunteers.
      
      Yet I don’t know of any memorial to Spartacus, while busts survive of Marcus Licinius Crassus, who crushed the rebellion. One bust of Crassus, a tough looking rooster, has an honoured spot – in the Louvre.
      
      It’s surprising that in posterity no memorial seems to have been erected to Spartacus’s final slave-soldiers, who were crucified by the thousand.
      
      As I recall, Mark Twain criticised a memorial erected to the Maori allies of the colonial government. Twain seemed to think it was wrong to honour them.
      
      If the memorial is still around, any protester thinking of removing it or defacing it should consider possible retribution from the descendants of these Maori.

    There is sometimes an alternative to either leaving a statue alone or taking it down. I read about a German city which had in its square a statue of a local boy who’d become an important colonial official in Namibia. But after it became widely known that this official had helped implement the genocide of the native Herero people – a genocide that some scholars have seen as a precedent for the ways Hitler treated the Jews of Europe – a large signboard was erected beside the sculpture, explaining the man’s role in history and the dark side of the German colonial project in southwest Africa.
    
    Another interesting case is the town in Tennessee that hosted the notorious Snopes ‘monkey’ trial back in the ’20s. The town has long had a statue memorialising the lawyer who persecuted a teacher for telling his students about the theory of evolution; recently, though, and over the protests of Christian fundamentalists, the old statue was complemented with a bust of the lawyer who defended the embattled teacher.

The Confederates who set up in Fiji and Queensland paid sailors to get them labourers from Melanesia – mostly from the New Hebs and the Solomons. Often, especially in the 1870s, islanders were taken forcibly, and the term ‘blackbirding’ has come to stand for this. I think blackbirding was first used in Australia to refer to the taking of Aboriginal slaves to work as pearl divers in Broome. Both the pearl divers and the workers on cotton and sugar plantations had terrible death rates.

    … six people had died of the flu in Auckland in the three days before the Niagara arrived. And the great upsurge in severe cases in the city occurred two weeks later, well outside the 48-hour incubation period.   To be fair I think the 2.25hrs relates to the ‘trial’ service using an old Silver Fern railcar, but it wasn’t very well explained.
  But you are correct on the money side of things. This Green wet dream will cost well north $2 billion, and there’s no mention of the cost of a ticket (or of the ongoing subsidy to bribe people to use it).

‘Why has there never been an official publication of 200 years together by Alexander Solzhenitsyn?’

That book, which I haven’t read, has been published, but my understanding is that it has been criticised very severely because of various generalisation about Jews that historians have considered inaccurate and anti-semitic. Solzhenitsyn’s expose of the gulag system in the USSR has been rightly applauded, but some of his opinions, like his opposition to democracy and his support for a return to near-absolute monarchy, have also been criticised. I don’t see how you can equate criticism with suppression of Solzhenitsyn’s freedom of speech. Nobody’s banning his texts these days.

  Here’s another. Alexander Zinoviev, a Russian fighter pilot in World War 2 and then a distinguished logician, wrote one of the great satires. The Yawning Heights roasted the Soviet Union and communism.
  
  Zinoviev was sacked from his university post, stripped of awards and hounded out of Russia.
  
  Yet, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Zinoviev turned against Perestroika.
  
  Wikipedia quotes Zinoviev saying in a 1991 interview:
  
  Once I was an unwitting accomplice of this action that I found shameful. The West wanted and programmed the Russian catastrophe. I read documents and participated in the research, which under the guise of ideological struggle worked towards the destruction of Russia.   There are only unofficial publications, the possession of which is anti-semitism under EU laws, and the communication of the contents of which is anti-semitism under EU laws – $1million fine, 20 years imprisonment.   How can anyone deduce if Solzhenitsyn did actually make generalizations that are inaccurate and anti-semitic, if mere possession of the book itself or communication of any of it’s contents are ruled inherently anti-semitic?
  
  If the Ashkenazi’s really did catalyse events killing 67 million white Christians between the start of the revolution and 1957…. well that’s a thing. Why would there be no official publication for a painstakingly written scholarly work by the author of the Gulag Archipelego? He was one of the greatest most accurate writers ever until he said the wrong things I guess.
  
  It’s a bit like Danny Niallah of Melbourne, being dragged through the courts for 5 years by the Islamic Council of Melbourne who argued that he couldn’t cite the Koran in court because merely reciting what it fucking says is ‘islamophobic’. He won, narrowly, in the Supreme Court, but only after they tried to ruin his life,

    Well, I haven’t read Solzhenitsyn’s book, but according to wikipedia it ha been published, and has been translated in several languages, including English. No one has banned the book or criminalised anyone for reading. It’s simply that, like so many great writers – TS Eliot, Balzac, Dostoevsky – Solzhenitsyn was capable of being insightful about some things and not about others. Reviewers criticise him when he writes things they find unbalanced, like his nostalgia for Tsarist rule, and praise him when he writes thing they think justified. There’s no conspiracy involved.
    
    The notion that Jews were behind the Bolshevik revolution and are largely responsible for the crimes of Stalin is a venerable part of Nazi and neo-Nazi ideology, and is especially ludicrous given Stalin’s own virulent anti-semitism. It’s sad that people can fall for this stuff in 2017.

      Still, the IHRA definitions are much too broad. That’s my real issue. I just hate censorship, and also the attitude that everyone is equally culpable for these views, when everyone knows why the need for these laws has suddenly become a lot more urgent recently in Europe.

  I get it, I get it – you’ll unironically say the Daily Caller itself is a hate-speech site that can’t be relied upon and itself needs to be censored. It’s just the most recent.   Paul Joseph Watson had a video on Platonic vs Aristotleian societies and how they differed – using “The Republic” and Aristotle’s empirism and deductive thinking as exampled by the American pilgrims. It was a harsh critique of socialism, including of the abstract thinking behind Israel and the original Kibbutzism movements, and the Platonic overtones of communism. I can’t link the video anymore because it’s been deleted by You-Tube.
  
  The good thing is that in the long-run Google will destroy itself by favouring diversity over quality, and someone will create new and better crowd platforms.

  Jacinda had on a a pale coloured loose fitting dress yesterday In Parliament which immediately brought to mind the dresses my wives have worn at early stage of pregnancy. My wife concurs with that. Such dresses are not trotted out without careful thought.

  There’s plenty of other over-priced eateries that could help you to burn a hole in your pocket.
  
  Just out of interest, have you ever visited Syndey and eaten at Tetsuya’s? By all accounts, the food’s fantastic, but it comes at a price and I’m told you may still go home feeling slightly hungry.

    I have heard of Tetsuya’s. (I generally prefer to eat Japanese food in Japan.)
    These big-name Japanese restaurants outside of Japan are also outside of my budget. Remember, I get paid in yen and the Japanese economy has been in the doldrums since the early 1990s.

        must be something to do with burning the cabbage over a charcoal grill as well as the soy/mirin/???? kombu powder secret formula.

        The dish sort of resembled these kale chips (but it was napa cabbage leaves)

An attack in the Telegraph on the craze for higher education, with all the debt that brings… The author is Nick Timothy, former joint Downing Street chief of staff to Prime Minister Theresa May. An extract:

… Ministers have argued for years that more people with degrees means more economic growth: we need, therefore, more graduates.

But the evidence suggests they are wrong. There has been no improvement in Britain’s productivity as graduate numbers have increased. Many graduates work in non-graduate jobs, and many earn no more than if they had not gone to university at all. Certain degree subjects offer no return on investment, while studies show there are entire universities where average graduate earnings 10 years after study are less than those of non-graduates.

Tuition fees were supposed to make university funding fairer for the taxpayer, but more than three quarters of graduates will never pay back their debts. The Office for Budget Responsibility calculates that student loans will add 11.1 per cent of GDP to the national debt by the late 2030s.

We have created an unsustainable and ultimately pointless Ponzi scheme, and young people know it.

Time for NZ, too, to review tertiary education.

Rapid rail network would merge North Island economies into a single powerhouse

A $1.45 billion rapid rail network could connect the country’s “Golden Triangle” of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga via a two-hour trip, transport lobby group Greater Auckland says.

Thank goodness they didn’t describe it as a “Golden Shower” of taxpayer money.

The final stage of Regional Rapid Rail would improve journey times, service levels and extend the network to other towns and cities in the upper North Island. This would include Rotorua, Cambridge and Te Puke, bringing the total cost up to $1.45b.

The third stage would reduce travel times between Auckland and Hamilton to just over an hour, and to two hours between Auckland and Tauranga. About 6 million passengers would use the services each year, and its operating profit would be at least $10m a year.

Right – who believes this?

  Can you advise what hallucinogenic substance the prat was on who suggested stretching rail from Hautapu to Cambridge. Then to top that they said stretch it from Putaruru to Rotorua! I enjoyed the touristy rail trip from Mamaku to Tarukenga. Apparently they will extend it to Ngatira. I hope so.
  But, the new inland container port at Tokoroa is brilliant, and bugger all taxpayer funds are needed to get it going.

I read this in the Guardian a few minutes ago, in a report about right-wing groups in America:

Meanwhile, in 2017, a so-called street-fighting organization called the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights (Foak) was formed by the California reactionary Kyle Chapman, who called the outfit a partner and “tactical defensive arm” of the Proud Boys. A core mission is to attend white nationalist, radical patriot or pro-Trump speaking events or rallies, sometimes carrying clubs and shields, and battling anti-fascist activists trying to protest or prevent racist speeches.

“We don’t fear the fight, we are the fight,” Chapman proclaimed in a post announcing the formation of Foak.
