Captain Mainwaring

Paddy the gnome was wetting his pants with excitement over Jacinda’s elevation and Bill English was remarkably candid about the new Labour leader having the potential to unseat his Government.
We all know where Paddy’s loyalties lie and English is deliberately using this as an excuse to scare the Nats and potential Nats off the couch on Sept. 23 to protect the country from a dysfunctional coalition of the losers.
The more interesting thing was that the drunken dwarf didn’t want to talk about it and came across as very grumpy about what had happened.
The reason is clear. He can see all the votes which have flooded away from Labour to NZF in recent months are going to come back. As they also will from the Greens.
The likely scenario is the Nats staying pretty much around 47% and the left shuffling around so that Labour might get back up to 30% with the Greens and NZF on about 7% each.
But the big question is: Will someone in the media be prepared to ask Jacinda whether she would have a benefit fraudster in her cabinet? If the media doesn’t ask it, English has to. The answer to this question could get the Nats up to the magic 50%.
Repeat after me: TWO TICKS BLUE.

  Two problems with your scenario:
  
  Paddy Gower, for all his faults, is an equal-opportunities muck-raker, who will shout “dirt deals”, “carnage” and “blood on the floor” no matter who it is.
  
  National are not a shoe-in at 47%. If that drops just 1% it starts to get difficult, another 2 or 3% and they must have Winston Peters on board. Yet again, Ardern is young, untried, so if Peters demands the Prime Ministership in a NZ First-Labour-Green coalition for at least the first year while she “learns the ropes of cabinet”, what can National offer to beat that?

  National doing nothing to bring back support
  It’s good that the Nats are awake to the increased likelihood of ‘my little Pony’ bringing Labour up to a fractionally more competitive level.
  
  However, what is sad that they are still so wedded to their ‘Labour Lite’ approach. Surely, the rational thing to do if you see your support drifting away a bit is to fix the drift not scaremonger! Their Labour Lite approach is the problem – if they return to a more centre right approach they could bring back the disenfranchised and starve the protest vote that currently is inexorably heading to Winston.
  
  But English’s strength as MoF was his stolidity and his lack of imagination – he was a fantastic balancing effect against Key and Joyce’s sporadic imaginative flakiness. But as a leadership quality it’s not good to be utterly devoid of any creativity or imagination.
  
  Two blue tickers not good at maths
  BTW for those advocating party vote National. How do you feel about your party vote being worth less than one third of a party vote being cast for NZF or for the Greens? It took nearly 60k party votes per National List seat, cf 18k party votes per NZF seat last time around.
  
  If you really want more of the same, then you are daft to party vote National, you can get three times the impact for voting for ~~Labour Lite 2~~ ACT to bolster the current Centre Left coalition. You could also achieve the same if you were to party vote Maori Party – and you could do your bit to continue the extension of racist policy into every facet of NZ life.

Good discussion on Radio Live about Jacinda Ardern this morning.

According to Matthew Hooten, she only needs to scoop up one in nine National voters, and the odd NZF voter to get over the line. Chris Trotter said she could conceivably get 10% points.

For Ardern to achieve the above, she has to become more centrist. That’s clear.

Becoming more ‘centrist’ is going to force her into addressing (among other things) the critical, black & white Turei welfare fraud issue. It hasn’t gone away I’m afraid.

Ardern has to lance this ugly, festering boil before the election, like by Monday, or she will find herself in a power of shit, especially during the debates. If she wants to emulate her hero Helen Clark, then she’s going to have to grow a massive pair and deal.

Ardern must either –

A: Insist Turei step down or recalibrate her extreme left position (she won’t; this is how the Greens define themselves now), or
B: Go along for the Marxist ride.

It’s a lose / lose situation.

  It’s hard to see her moving them back to the centre. In early 2008 she was elected as the President of the International Union of Socialist Youth.
  
  On the understanding that if you’re not left wing when you’re 20 you have no heart, and if your still left wing when you turn 30 you have no brains, it needs to be remembered that she was 30 in 2008.

  She already has. And for most voters it’s not a critical issue. They may personally disapprove strongly, but it’s not going to be a critical election issue.
  
  And it’s already clear that Adern is not going to move more towards the centre. Safe and not scary was not working for Little. Her announcement today makes it clear she is going to ramp up spending on housing, health and education.

She is just not ready to be Prime Minister. There is nothing in her background to date on how she will handle the sorts is things a Prime Minister does. The big stuff like war with North Korea, a full blown economic crisis when the money runs out, a major disaster, dealing with Trump. There is certainly nothing larger than life about her. She is a small attractive person for a very small attractive country. Trump will put his hand on her knee and she will cringe.

Don’t forget that Winston Peters is perpetually grumpy with the media. It’s not necessarily that he’s pissed off about the toothy sheila.

He has been anti media since way back; long before Trump cottoned on to the benefits of media bashing – remember the MSM are fair game, being seen in average punters’ eyes as being among the lowest of the low.

Lest we forget,lets keep our feet on the ground. Even if Kim Kardashian was installed as the new Lie-bour/Green Party Leader what would change.

  This could be worth watching because the Green are all for recycling and after the success of removing Little they have tasted blood and a mood swing which also means that fraud is ok and those that need to do it are allowed. So Jacinta has a problem that must be dealt with first and that is to put the Greens back to where they were before or the Labour Party will continue a Green Policy of recycling their Leadership.

Of course it is. Before we vote are we not entitled to know as Jacindar is going for the top job as PM. Would Kelvin be taking over if she was to have a baby. How would she cope with the job and all that comes with a small baby.

    I’m all for Jacindar having a baby or several, a whole rugby team. The point was there are those who say she is not to even be asked the question because she is a woman.     She actually brought up the subject herself in several interviews where she protested at length that she had no designs on Little’s job because she wanted to have a baby in the next year or so. I think it is fair enough to ask about it as she herself said that was what she was planning.

    In her puff-piece in Herald last year she said she wanted kids but could not do that while being PM or leader:

She doesn’t want to work the ridiculous hours, she doesn’t want the acute spotlight of media scrutiny and having recently moved in with her partner, Auckland media personality Clarke Gayford, she wants to have kids.
    
    She can have these things as an MP but not as the leader of a party. Sure as heck not as Prime Minister.
    
    It’s a very human answer.”
    
    So less than a year ago she said she wants kids and that is incompatible with being party leader or PM. Has she changed her mind?

  Pregnancy and childbirth severely depress mental acuity. Stress, sleep deprivation, nutritional deficits all combine for “mummy brain” that mangles memory. Might not be PC but it is very real, and not something that the top job will easily accommodate.

        No Vic, I actually had to go out Castlecliff way at lunchtime today, and there are still a few Andrew Little “A fresh approach” billboards there.
        
        Probably the best thing of all is that I’ve yet to see a single NZ First in Whanganui this year. Winston was really bullish last year when Chester announced his intention to retire; NZF was going to win Whanganui. I’m not aware that they’ve even named a candidate yet, which is probably quite an important part of winning!

They are quoting a madeup “Poll of Polls” which has Labour on 25% and National on 45%. They are interviewing every Labourite from the left to give the opinion that she will raise Labours vote to 35%.

I was at Goodwood 8 years ago and even that short while ago, there was nary a Police Officer in sight let alone ones carrying military grade firearms.

  And rather than place government services in the regional ‘towns’ it would be cheaper and more productive to improve the roading instead, and in that way people can have ‘better’ access to government services in the ‘cities’—NZ geographically is not Australia. And broadband is also nationwide in NZ lessening the need for physical interaction. Government services provide particular services, where roading provides a general service, everywhere. Regional towns should be full of attractions and not ‘the public service’ or it’s private providers. Over the longer term I know what I’d rather be paying for!

    Good roads are powerful., aided by the 2nd hand Japanese import, and now the general low cost of a small car.
    How ever many under estimate the cost of running a vehicle.
    Public transport often means a whole day away for 20 minute appointment.
    Funny that I find that the freephone service often ends up in the India, Philippines or Australia.
    
    Banks quite often end with some Australian connection, when your so called special manager is on leave or change over.
    
    My nearby town , can be business done and dusted and back home to work in one hour. 2 at the most.
    To go to a provincial city, takes a very big junk out of the day and means the whole day is rushed.
    
    In the past it was the “civil servants” that had the time for theatre clubs, tennis, squash clubs, etc. that drove things in regional towns.
    
    What would you rate as an attraction? for a regional town? Cafe? Rest area? Toilet stop? Dog walk/relief? OP shop, lotto outlet? fish&chip dairy?, gas station?, in between rural merchandise shops. for a 30 minute break.
    How do you get it to be a day out? overnight?

  There are great things happening in the provinces, so more people need to get out of Auckland and make the discovery that there IS intelligent life (and coffee!) south of the Bombay Hills. And work-life balance is a huge factor, especially for those who are spending a couple of hours or more of every weekday stuck in traffic.
  
  Regional New Zealand is on a role. Last week Q-West Boat Builders here in Whanganui launched the new ferry it has been building for Fullers, as part of the largest commercial boat building contract ever in New Zealand; right here in provincial NZ. Q-West employs or contracts around 60 skilled tradies, and their boats they build are world class.
  
  For those who think they are stuck in Auckland, take a few weekends off, and take a few roadies to the provinces. You’ll find jobs for skilled staff, a lower cost of housing and living, fresh air, traffic that flows, and plenty of activities to occupy the hours of extra time you’ll have when you’re not stuck in Auckland’s traffic.

  Ian Wishart may gravitate towards the sensational and lurid – Peter Lineham doesn’t. Good comments by him. Also, interesting comment by NZ convert (via studying comparative religion at Waikato Uni as I seem to recall) and local Muslim leader Abdullah Drury. If he says it, then, ok, you’ve got my attention:
  
  Disquiet was also voiced in the New Zealand Herald last year by local Muslim leader Abdullah Drury, who warned that 30 years of making the Muslim community a mainstream part of New Zealand was disappearing out the door because the huge influx of recent immigrants under Labour has changed the balance of power. Where once Muslims had a sense of their NZ identity, Drury says the new leaders’ “hearts, minds, rationale and prejudices are still firmly rooted in their home countries.
  
  More than one North Island critic has stated that some Canterbury Muslims think they’re still living in Africa or the Middle East.
  
  “Why are things falling apart now?” asks Drury. “The most significant contribution stems from the massive and poorly planned influx of immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East in the 1990s. Nobody in the local Muslim community
  ever anticipated or planned this.”
  
  From 13,000 Muslims in 1996, there are now almost 37,000, and the Islamic community has jumped 50% under Labour.
  
  Says Drury:
  
  “The pioneering Muslim families who established Islam in this country have been effectively overwhelmed: swept out of office by the superior numbers of the new faces, or entrenching themselves and encouraging newcomers to set up their own Islamic prayer arrangements.
  
  “There was also a substantial change in composition. In the 1970s most Muslims in New Zealand were…mostly from societies with long traditions of interaction with white Anglo-Saxon culture and customs: Indians, Fiji Indians or Pakistanis.
  
  “Now, there is a substantial bloc, often Arab or African, with considerably poorer education than their predecessors, with vastly different language skills and cultures to those this country has traditionally absorbed.
  
  “This,” warns Drury, “has exacerbated community differences along ethnic, linguistic or cultural lines inside mosques from Christchurch to Auckland…very quickly [the Arab/African faction] use their disproportionately larger numbers to vote in their own leaders. Consequently, a fair number of mosques in New Zealand are currently being administered or dominated by people and groups who have arrived in this country within the last 10 years, some substantially less.”

        I’ve started reading D’Souza’s book. Very good so far actually. Although I probably wouldn’t agree with everything, it’s better than the title suggests and I wish he wouldn’t have given the book that title. It’s more about the fascism on the Left.
        
        What is really interesting to me so far is that JFK was originally a fan of Hitler, though he fought in WWII.
        
        JFK toured Nazi Germany in the 1930s and came back effusive with praise of Hitler and his theory of Nordic superiority. “I have come to the conclusion,” JFK wrote in his diary, “that fascism is right for Germany and Italy.” Touring the Rhineland, JFK echoed Nazi propaganda at the time. “The Nordic races appear to be definitely superior to the Romans.” Hostility toward Hitler, JFK insisted, stems largely from jealousy. “The Germans really are too good—that’s why people conspire against them.” Even though JFK fought in World War II, he retained a soft spot for Hitler as late as 1945, when he described him as the “stuff of legends . . . Hitler will emerge from the hate that now surrounds him and come to be regarded as one of the most significant figures to have lived.”36
        
        These incriminating facts are known to many progressive scholars. But after Word War II, as this group came increasingly to dominate the academy—a dominance that was fully consolidated by the late 1960s—the progressives recognized how crushing it would be if Americans knew about the actual record of progressivism and the Democratic Party. What if people, especially young people, knew the links between revered progressive figures like Wilson, FDR, and JFK on the one hand, and the hated Mussolini and Hitler on the other? Such knowledge would not merely topple progressive heroes from their pedestal. Basically it would be the end of progressivism and the Democratic Party.
        
        So progressives decided to tell a new story, and this is the story that has now become our conventional wisdom. In this story, the very fascism and Nazism that were, from the outset, on both sides of the Atlantic, recognized as left-wing phenomena now got moved into the right-wing column. Suddenly Mussolini and Hitler became “right-wingers,” and the people who supposedly brought them to power became “conservatives.” The Left, then, became the glorious resisters of fascism and Nazism.
        
        To make this story work, fascism and Nazism had to be largely redefined. The big problem was that Mussolini and Hitler both identified socialism as the core of the fascist and Nazi weltanschauung. Mussolini was the leading figure of Italian revolutionary socialism and never relinquished his allegiance to it. Hitler’s party defined itself as championing “national socialism.” So the progressives had to figure out how to move these avowed left-wingers to the Right, and how to get the “socialism” out of “national socialism.” This was not an easy task.
        
        Think about this: we know the name of the philosopher of capitalism, Adam Smith. We also know the name of the philosopher of Marxism, Karl Marx. So, quick, what is the name of the philosopher of fascism? Yes, exactly. You don’t know. Virtually no one knows. My point is that this is not because there were no foundational thinkers behind fascism—you will meet them in this book—but rather that the Left had to get rid of them in order to avoid confronting their unavoidable socialist and leftist orientation.

        Thanks, Fletch – but JFK was still a young man at the time (he was born in 1917), and his “Hitler and Mussolini put some backbone into their countries” assessment was not uncommon before the war. Oh, yes, and as Christopher Hitchens pointed out – JFK chose to run to the right of the Eisenhower-Nixon administration in his 1960 campaign and accused them of being…soft on international communism!
        
        But I’m more interested in the reaction of Jack5 and Philbest. I may disagree with them from time to time, but at least they are honourable men who, unlike others in their ideological neck of the woods, don’t resort to pigeon chess. 😉

        EAD makes an effort to portray a rational person but when pressed will not admit what he is .

        His idea of freedom like many on the far ends of politics is: you are free to do as we tell you.
        This implicitly implies an element of coercion.
        The extremes can never really be democratic as they know what they want would not be acceptable to the majority for any length of time. Hence the strong pull towards authoritarianism on both sides of extremism to get what they want.
        
        Who knows .

The global warming ‘scientists’ in Australia are caught altering low temperatures upward. Can’t have it appearing too cold now, can we?

Australian scientists at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) ordered a review of temperature recording instruments after the government agency was caught tampering with temperature logs in several locations.

Agency officials admit that the problem with instruments recording low temperatures likely happened in several locations throughout Australia, but they refuse to admit to manipulating temperature readings. The BOM located missing logs in Goulburn and the Snow Mountains, both of which are in New South Wales.

Meteorologist Lance Pidgeon watched the 13 degrees Fahrenheit Goulburn recording from July 2 disappear from the bureau’s website. The temperature readings fluctuated briefly and then disappeared from the government’s website.

“The temperature dropped to minus 10 (13 degrees Fahrenheit), stayed there for some time and then it changed to minus 10.4 (14 degrees Fahrenheit) and then it disappeared,” Pidgeon said, adding that he notified scientist Jennifer Marohasy about the problem, who then brought the readings to the attention of the bureau.

A similar failure wiped out a reading of 13 degrees Fahrenheit at Thredbo Top on July 16, even though temperatures at that station have been recorded as low as 5.54 degrees Fahrenheit.

Failure to observe the low temperatures had “been interpreted by a member of the community in such a way as to imply the bureau sought to manipulate the data record,” Johnson said, according to The Australian. “I categorically reject this implication.”

Insinuating headlines such as PM's wife and the million-dollar contract with a story that falls over itself trying to connect dots but actually points out nothing improper.

A more accurate headline would be “suicide prevention funding doubled” but I guess that did not fit the desired narrative.

Another long-established manufacturer and exporter of New Zealand primary products has slipped into Chinese ownership.

The wool skins and tannery firm G.L.Bowron, set up in pioneer-era Christchurch 138 years ago, has been bought by a subsidiary of Henan Prosper Skins and Leather Enterprise. Bowrons is big in sheepskin exports.

The sale to China follows the $261 million deal in which Shanghai Maling (Hong Kong) taking a 50 per cent controlling stake in the meat co-operative Silver Fern Farms. It will be interesting to see whether the water contracts held by Silver Fern for its now closed Ashburton plant will end up supplying cheap Canterbury water for China.

Announced last year was a $200 million investment by China Animal Husbandry Group to take a 71 per cent stake in a new infant formula plant in Southland.

When Britain joined the EU, British colonial investors largely pulled out of processing of NZ primary products. Now we have a new colonial investor.

    The ultimate owner of G.L. Bowron and Co., and now the seller, has been Hatchi Sydney Corporation, which is owned by Muruhati, of Japan. Muruhati is the trading name for Murahachi Group, a small Japanese conglomerate (about 3,000 employees).
    
    The four directors of Bowron in recent years have all been Japanese.
    
    Bowron profit in 2016 was down to $1.9 million from $5.4 million in 2015. This was on sales of $55.5 million in 2016, down from $63.5 million in 2015.
    
    I guess this is what happens when you sell your business to foreigners. You never know who you will be working for, and there is just not the feeling that the owners are in it for the long term.

Major inquiry on voluntary euthanasia does not recommend law change

National MP and Health Committee chairman Simon O’Connor says he feels public safety cannot adequately be safeguarded should assisted dying be made legal.

The Health Committee’s report on a petition by former Labour MP and assisted dying advocate Maryan Street was tabled in Parliament this afternoon.

The two-year inquiry heard from 22,000 submitters, including 1000 of them in person.

The petition was signed by nearly 9000 people and asked for a full investigation into public attitudes to medically-assisted dying for people with a terminal or irreversible condition. It also asked for a change to the existing law.

Unfortunately, that’s not happening in Rotorua, with news that the local Mayor and former Labour Party MP, Steve Chadwick, approved $90,000 of public money to import five tonnes of mud from South Korea for Rotorua’s “Mudtopia” festival, to be held later in the year.

Our researcher, Matthew Rhodes, was even quoted by the BBC on this ridiculous example of wasteful spending: See Row as New Zealand spends thousands on South Korean mud.

Incredibly, Rotorua’s Council initially defended the spending by telling media they should ‘go easy’ because the money was from a taxpayer funded MBIE grant, and not ‘from ratepayers’. In the end that turned out to be wrong – the money came from a combined taxpayer/ratepayer pool for the event.

Our mascot, Porky the Waste-hater, travelled to Rotorua on Monday to hold a special award ceremony at the civic building – you can watch the tongue-in-cheek award ceremony here.

The New York Times joins the Social Justice Warrior campaign to rewrite the British history of World War 2.

The writer, who from his surname is, or descends from, the “subcontinent,” correctly points out that 2 million or more Indians took part in the war, but doesn’t acknowledge that most of them were fighting in the Middle East and Burma, where Britain wouldn’t have been fighting but for India and the Suez link to it.

He doesn’t mention either thousands of Indians also fought for the Japanese in Burma, nor does he acknowledge British good deeds. For example, the resettling in Britain of the thousands of Indians driven out of Uganda by Idi Amin. I bet far more went to Britain than to India.

Perhaps it would be just for more British acknowledgement of the Indians participation in World War 2, but that’s not what the revisionists really want. If they looked they would see plenty of mention of Indians in the war histories and in the popular books about the war. He doesn’t mention the British fondness and praise for the Gurkhas and the resettlement of many of them and their families in Britain. Nor a feeling of warmth from many of the British veterans for Sikhs, who comprised many of the Indian units that fought in the Middle East.

What the revisionists really seek is a complete colonial re-write, a re-make of Britain’s culture and view of itself – to make the British ashamed of their past and their forbears. Out with the old heroes and the current self-view of the British. In with multiculturism and a new righteous class of the offended.

It makes you wonder why these folk stay in the West rather than migrate to Pakistan, India, Africa, or wherever.

Still, perhaps it’s a bit like the murmurs when Americans were written into post-war British war films. A bit of a grizzle, then soon forgotten.
