I have yet to see anyone in the NZ media actually articulate this, but the average kiwi’s view on the Metiria Turei scandal is that her past behaviour is exactly why MSD are so tough on beneficiaries today.

It’s a little rich for Turei to blame the department for being uncaring and cruel when people like her have essentially made it like that.

Nobody would deny the genuinely needy who go to the State for support, but if it weren’t for the thousands who have ripped the system off for decades be it DPB, ACC, HNZ, tertiary ed etc then there would be so much more money for those cases.

I strongly suspect Material Turei’s real reason for digging her heels in, is that she can see the large salary, $2,000 dresses, perks, importance, parties at the castle and benefits coming to an end shortly.

The low class ones always become addicted to it.

Turei also knows her prospects in or out of the public service are extremely limited. She is far too toxic.

And then there’s a lifetime of dirty looks in Pak N Save. So sad.

  I suspect that many Beneficiaries will find the going much more vigorous with Winz now that Turei has expose Fraud in her dealings.

  Amen. That and the complete lack of thankfulness for taxpayer support is why people want WINZ to be tough with beneficiaries. Has Turei thanked the taxpayers for their hard-earned money? No. She just talks about being entitled to it.

    That’s a really good point you make. The two short periods I spent on the DPB, I was genuinely grateful that I lived in a country that enabled me to take time off to look after my daughter. I used to thank the WINZ staff, and treat them with respect. With one notable exception that attitude was returned by them, I guess a nice change from some of the arrogant entitled ferals that I encountered (just like MT)

  At least Sue Bradford had integrity. When ze fat cherman started funding her political party, she decided to up sticks and get out of dodge. I have no time for Sue Bradfords politics, but I will always respect her integrity. I quite like the woman just quietly, I’d buy her a beer. As for Turei, I am reminded of a phrase in an RN officers performance appraisal. “In my last report, I stated that this officer had reached rock bottom; regrettably he has learned how to dig!”

  Some questions that have not yet been asked in this issue,…
  1. Why wasn’t Metiria using contraception? Isn’t birth control the individuals responsibility? (We all know the howls of rage that appear when it is suggested the State manage someone’s reproductive cycle.)
  2. Wasn’t Metiria already unemployed when she became pregnant?
  3. Isn’t the lower level of income provided by the DPB meant to be a deterrent to having to need it?

    She was 22 or 23 ish when she got knocked up. Depends what day of the week she is telling the story and what address she may or may not have shagging in. It is shifting sands with her stories.
    
    This is not a naive teenager. 16 or 17 yes. At 18 you have to be rather dim to still be naive on such matters. At 22…it’s not like she was Exclusive Brethren!
    
    The Hartley family is well heeled. Paul H’s brother has a Masters degree and was an Executive at Lion Nathan at that time. The family owned multiple properties including a holiday home on Great Barrier Island. Ann Hartley had been in real estate then politics being a one term Mayor of North Shore City at about the time Turei got knocked up.
    
    We see how manipulative Turei is, and how economic with the truth.
    There is a chance she targeted P Hartley as it was a well off family.
    At 22 or 23 she kinda had to know about the birds and the bees.
    
    PS Dd: on pt 3. Yes. Welfare should be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice. TOP, Greens etc seem to have gone all Venezuelan on this.

I would respectfully suggest that you take your Deputy aside and have a quiet word in his teacher ear and suggest to him that you are the boss and the kind of personal denigration he used against current Ministers is not what would be expected of somebody who, in you possible absence, say overseas, could lead your Party.
He obviously thinks it clever – you would never have done that even if you thought it.
Cindy – Watch him he is already out of his depth and way above his intelligence level.
Grant is loving it though.

    One week ago the media were saying Labour were unelectable and now they are putting all their weight behind Labour because of their New Leaders looks and style. The Labour package hasn’t changed the infighting will continue and the policy is all about using other people’s money to give to the unfortunate. I am just waiting for someone to ask for the correct costings of all their policy and their coalition partners so we can see where the money is coming from and how much unemployment it will create.

  When will NZ’s ‘political journalists’ give up on their preoccupations (in most instances, some rare exceptions!) with personalities and beauty-parades?
  
  In the interests of their readers and viewers (i.e. their ‘customers’), it’s about time that they did some serious, comparative analysis to define the policies, taxation plans and projected expenditures of the four leading Parties.

Turei/Davis/Ardern running NZ.
Turei =self confessed tax payer funded benefit thief.
Davis= tendencies to criminal hugging,and gets his votes from a race based electorate.
Ardern =When running the International Union of Social Youth. Was known as the commie chic from NZ.
Certainly someting to look foward to, should the mentioned make it on that date.

It was sickening watching the obese green thing parading around parliament in her designer clothing. It was an “up you” to the disadvantaged.

If she had any ethics or genuine remorse she should have been quietly arranging the repayment of the money she defrauded from WINZ.

Her cowardly co-leader who supports her will be tainted for many years.

I believe the Greens will suffer terminal damage because of these two clowns.

Right of way is Way of Right

I’ve been stewing over Metiria Turei’s attitude over the last few days, but since the passage of time has allowed me to think a little more clearly, I have worked out what it is about her attitude that disgusts me.

It is her disrespect.

She has disrespected the NZ taxpayer, by continuing to claim that she had no choice but to lie to access OUR money.

She has disrespected the electoral process of our country, by claiming to have fraudulently enrolled elsewhere so that the universal enfranchisement that women worldwide fought, and in some cases DIED for could be wasted on voting for a mate. (an assertion I don’t believe for a moment, just quietly!)

She has disrespected every father in the country. By her actions, she has relegated every father in the country to the role of sperm donor and financial provider to a tax system that she can now rort.

She has disrespected her mother by reducing her role as a parent and grandparent to the role of a financially independent flatmate.

She has disrespected the father of her child by defining his role in the raising of his daughter in her terms only, and allowed him to abrogate his responsibility.

She has disrespected her daughter by telling her that her role in life was to make things financially easier for her mother, and that her relationship with her father has to be engineered in such a way as to provide the best financial benefit for her mother.

She has disrespected every solo parent in the country who has worked hard to make ends meet so they can make the best possible life for their children.

She has disrespected every hard working parent who sometimes take on two or three jobs to make ends meet, and to provide a life for their children.

She has disrespected every beneficiary in New Zealand by taking more than her fair share, thereby making life harder for all of those who may even have a greater need.

She has disrespected her party, by using her position to try and spin this story as a ‘crusade’ for the humble beneficiary, rather than face the consequences of her actions when this story broke.

Her attitude smacks of entitlement. She appears to think that she is better than the rest of us. She has not apologised, and shows no contrition for her actions.

These are not the personal qualities of anyone who should be anywhere near the levers of power in this country. She has no morals, scruples or credibility.

She must go, but she will not, as she has no respect for anyone, not even herself. If she truly respected herself, she would face up to ALL the consequences of her actions, and deal with them honestly.

She didn’t deal honestly with the consequences of her actions 25 years ago, she hasn’t changed, she never will.

Dump her!

  Very well said. This case also brings to the fore issues around incompetent ethnics being pushed into unearned position of power under the holy guise of equality and diversity.
  
  The harsh truth is that Maoris will never be equal to Whitey and it is cruel to teach them that they can be, it just leads them to resent Whitey because if they are “equal” then their failures and incompetence must be caused by Pakeha and “their system” somehow keeping them down.
  
  If it is whitey keeping her down, of course she’s not going to feel remorse about ripping off “the system” as she believes it is her entitlement.

    Steady on EAD, there was no mention of ethnicity in what I posted, and with good reason.
    
    I work in an organisation where many Maori hold positions of authority, an authority which has been earned. Although I have no Maori ancestry, I do have iwi affiliation.

      Thanks Right of Way for clarifying – I actually didn’t class Maori as Fraudsters and Cheats, rather that their sense of entitlement stemming from the Maori grievance industry plays a definite part in Tureis lack of remorse.
      
      If Maori really are equal Does this mean that we can scrap the positive discrimination employment laws (I’m guessing your public sector or the “Maoris” aren’t actually really Maori) and the lowering of grades for Maoris for Medical school entry?
      
      Does it also confirm that the vastly disproportionate numbers of Maori in prison is due to “institutional racism”?

    If Polynesian DNA hails from East Asia (from the aborigines of Taiwan?) then it is possible that the Maori have a some of those Caucasian-beating Asian-high-IQ genes in their genotype.
    Add the significant portion of Caucasian blood that must be present in any non-pure-blood Maori, then you would expect a equivalent level of intelligence to this “whitey” fellow.
    On the other hand, the victim culture, fragmentation of the nuclear family, dependence of welfare and lack of respect for scholarship that is a common feature to underclass cultures the world over, has blighted the lives of many “Maori.”
    If a race has any intelligence, it will seek to cast off the shackles of State dependency and to stand proudly on its own two feet, to take personal responsibility for the protection and fostering of its own language, traditions and its most vulnerable members.

It’s funny how Labour’s attitude to fuel taxes has done a 180* back flip in five years; this, from Stuff on 18 December 2012 (emphasis is mine):

Adding 9 cents a litre to the price of petrol by 2015 is the only way National can reach surplus in the next three years, Labour says.

The Government announced today it plans to hike the price of driving, adding 9 cents a litre to the price of petrol by 2015. In each of the next three Julys, the Government will impose a 3 cent a litre rise to the excise tax component of petrol.

The announcement came just hours before the Government opened the books for its half-yearly economic update.
The increase in excise tax on petrol would lift Government income by up to $300 million a year and Finance Minister Bill English said while it would have an impact on the Government’s accounts, he denied it was done to ensure the forecasts showed a surplus.

Labour leader David Shearer believes otherwise.

“National’s promise on the surplus is too big to break. It has to get there. But it’s forecast to get there with a razor-thin margin of just $66m by cutting jobs, selling assets and raising prices at the petrol pumps,” he said.

“New Zealanders deserve better than a Government that is out of ideas and is just managing our decline.”

The decision on petrol tax came at a time when Kiwis were already struggling, Shearer said.

“This isn’t the Christmas present that Kiwis expected. They’re finding it hard enough to pay the bills now, let alone having to pay more for petrol to paper over the cracks in National’s books.”

Each 1 cent added to the pump price of petrol adds around $15 to the annual running cost for the average motorist.

  I have been a tenant and a landlord. My experience as both is that if you are a good tenant – pay rent, treat the place well, you are mostly going to have security. My current tenants are fantastic and I don’t want them to leave. So I pitch the rent to the lower end of market rates. I would rather sacrifice $30 per week in rent for stable, excellent tenants.
  
  At the other end of the spectrum, I have had nightmare tenants. No you can’t smoke in the flat. No you can’t use drugs. No you can’t have a cat. (A week later “Didn’t I say you couldn’t have a cat?!).
  
  There does not seem to be much middle ground with tenants. They are either really good (most of them ) or a nightmare. The ones who are a nightmare bring all their problems on themselves.
  
  One law I would support is measures to force landlords to insulate and rid flats of dampness, where it is reasonably practical to do so. And no it is not just about airing the place. I once lived in a damp mouldy flat and NOTHING I did solved the problem. Made it a bit better but it was a f**** nightmare. So I left and found a new flat.

Reading a story on Stuff this morning I came across this:

  For sealed roads doubling as lakes no part of NZ has practised the art form quite like Northland. Camber doesn’t seem to come into the equation when designing roads while super elevation (or banking) is unknown.

    Last time it happened a truck and trailer went over a bank in the mangawhai gorge.. The time before there was truck crashes closing both Mountain rd and Kiawaka Mangawhai rd detours.
    Many who dont live up here have no idea about the traffic on SH1. It is busy 24/7 with heavy freight

      That is a big part of the problem. The terrain is either orange clay which doesn’t seem to cohere or compact, interspersed with bottomless swamps.
      
      But IMHO the roading engineers could solve quite a few of the problems by incorporating reasonable camber. Potholes are usually a result of poor water runoff.
      
      If you design a fault into something it’s hard to get people to act amazed when it fails.

  You could sell it, but the new owner would have to allow the existing tenants to continue to occupy it. And you’d never be able to live in it yourself.
  
  So if you went overseas for a few years (like my brother-in-law has done) and rented your house out while away, you can’t come back and live in it.

      There are some good points to it, many more people are predicted to become renters and may need more protection so that their families don’t face huge upheaval (having to change schools, move further away from work etc.) due to the whim of the landlord.

Concerning the ‘ethics / intelligence’ of ‘Journalists’: the following might be of interest

According to Red Radio’s 0600 news this morning, RNZ obtained (via OIA request) a document which say that an Indian ‘Mr Big’ is controlling the Indian student influx into NZ. Fair enough, and of no surprise. However, it appears that ‘Mr. Big’ was actually named in the document, and it was what came next which floored me. According to the bulletin ‘Mr Big’ denies all knowledge of such things!!’ Is it just me, or do others also get the impression that some idiot RNZ reporter actually walked up to Mr Big’ and asked him point blank ‘Do you control the flow of students into NZ’ ?? What else could the guy say except ‘No’ ? As well, by doing-so haven’t RNZ also just told the Indian that he is being investigated and destroyed all and any work which the NZ immigration authorities might have been doing to actually catch the culprit.

Are NZ ‘journalists’ actually THAT stupid and give absolutely no thought or concern to the consequences of their actions?? I’ve seen this sort of thing done in the US media, and had thought that NZ was possibly above such idiocy; evidently I was wrong.

Noticeably, Immigration NZ (or whatever they may be officially titled) was not approached for comment…

Labour’s costings on their transport seem funny. They’ve announced 6 projects. 1 of those projects they costed last year at $1.36billion.

They told the journos their full Transport plan they’ve costed at $3.3billion:

“The fuel tax is estimated to raise $160 million a year at 10c a litre, and Labour’s full plan is costed at $3.3 billion, comprising new and accelerated projects over 20 years”.

Now it’s unclear if that figure includes the $1.2billion ‘savings’ from making East/West ‘more efficient’.

It’s also unclear if that figure is the cost to central government after subtracting the $3.2billion over 20 years they think they’ll raise with their regional petrol tax that of course won’t raise downstream costs outside of Auckland or ever increase…

Assuming the ‘extra’ is relative to National’s announced spending that number would be $2.6 b+ $2.1b = $4.7billion

That number doesn’t seem to reconcile with anything – I thought they said the full costings were $3.3billion? And that number is also much smaller then the $7.7billion you get if you add to Labour’s ‘full cost’ the ‘savings’ from East West ($1.2b) and the regional fuel tax proceeds over 20 years ($3.2b).

  For commuter trains to work (as they do so well for workers in Tokyo) you need to have high density residential apartment blocks in walking distance to loop lines (not terminal lines that end in Britomart). You also need bus rotundas in front of each railway station, serving commuters within a 3-km radius of each station.
  To work, Auckland rain needs to be a big loop line, running up from South Auckland through to Helensville, then down through the North Shore, under the harbor (or over the bridge) and through to Britomart.
  The Auckland population needs to be about 3 times higher for trains to be feasible (this can be achieved by the current immigration policies).

An immigrant couple who police claim tried to take their newborn daughter overseas to be genitally mutilated have been banned from leaving Australia.

The couple, who were both born overseas and arrived in Australia separately 10 years ago, were slapped with a travel ban after NSW police recorded them discussing female circumcision, according to The Australian.

    Someone comes into your country and breaks the laws and codes of your country, and you turn it into a case of they would have committed the cruelty even if they hadn’t immigrated, so why shouldn’t they have immigrated to your country.
    
    Apply this argument to the Australian Muslims accused of trying to bring down an airliner. Your argument suggests it was fine for them to be in Australia because if they weren’t there they could have organised the atrocity from their home country any way.

On my way downtown this morning passed a rundown old house with a Labour sign on the front lawn showing the old combo of Little and Ardern.
However underneath the sign were a litter of beer bottles and Cody’s boxes from a recent party and a skinny looking mongrel tethered to the support brackets.
Typical I thought or maybe the creatures who lived inside were just embracing the new slogan “Lets do this”.

In essence what Soundbite Cindy is suggesting is:
ALL people who buy petrol in Auckland will pay an extra 10c per litre on fuel for 10 years.
This includes Students, delivery vans, meals on wheels, the shuttle bus between Auckland and Greenlane hospital, volunteers, amateur sports coaches etc.

A tram (Pretend train ) will be built to further congest Dominion Rd (and possibly Queen Street/Ian McKinnon Drive). This will mainly service out of towners who can’t afford a taxi or Uber.

There is already the Skybus which is privately owned and requires ZERO public money.
It is a great service. It is not cheap. I doubt a Tram will be cheap on full cost. There is massive capital cost then forever after subsidy.
The Sydney express train to Central is AUD 18. It is a real train as well. Last time I caught the train in Brisbane 15 years ago it was AUD 10. No problem. Compared to the airfare or even departure taxes it is hardly relevant.

I use it as it is a few hundred metres walk to the bus terminal. Most users are backpackers or people from other parts of NZ. I even got one at 4.15am a few months back for a 7am flight. It is 24 hours. Auckland public transport is not.

A Tram a.k.a. light rail to the airport is single use. It will take up central Auckland real estate for a limited purpose.
The current Skybus is using existing resources and paying Road user charges.
A Tram will not service South, West, East or North Auckland. i.e. the very people who are paying for it.
The tram has a massive capital cost for single use and will be paid for by Aucklanders for out of towners and backpackers – the latter of whom don’t spend much anyway.

It will possibly put out of business a perfectly efficient privately owned flexible bus system.
Then again Labour are anti private enterprise and non union shops.
It is flexible because it currently goes alternately down Dominion Rd then Mt Eden Road. It can be expanded e.g. to use the Waterview tunnel or Newmarket and Manukau Road.
It reduces frequency in the early morning then increases to 10 minutes at peak operating times.

    So apparently the govt will be spending $1.94billion on 5 other projects, 3 of which are light rail projects equivalent or larger/more complex then CBD – Mt Roskill.

    I understand AT had the original Airbus and sold it to the Melbourne Coy – owned by the Canadian Pension Fund- in 2015. I guess they are doing better than the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan who lost big on the Yellow Pages fiasco.
    The Red Rabid commies are so opposed to any ownership outside the Party.
    
    It provides one option among many – private transport; taxi; rental car; Uber ; Hotel shuttle.
    Trams are an imaginary friend to a problem that does not exist.

  Look, just extend the Onehunga line to the airport an then to connect at Manukau City and then onto Papakura. People can then go round the link to get to the Airport. Also , finally put the train out to the East and fuck all the NIMBYs who don’t want it going through Meadowbank etc.

    Light rail along Dom Rd has to be the dumbest idea ever. Especially when rail already goes to Onehunga, and I believe when they added to the bridge made the Piers strong enough to build rail on.

    KS: Quite so…I never thought I would see the day when, as I have just done, I sent two Green MP’s e-mails saying “Well done”…I had little time for either of them before today – I have considerable respect for them now, regardless of the spin the Green’s are putting on it. (Low list placings; that they were useless anyway…)
    
    Turei’s position has been untenable since the moment she admitted to lying to receive extra benefit money…and if there was any doubt at all, it was utterly removed when it emerged that she had been registered as living at the father of her child’s address, and therefore arguably not entitled to the DPB at all. I don’t believe her claim for a moment that she was only registered as living there “so I could vote for a mate”…She was herself standing as a candidate in the same election FFS!
    
    Congratulations to Clendon and Graham…a little late, but a principled decision nonetheless…and at least in Clendon’s case, he is most unlikely to ever earn what he has as an MP, so it is a decision that can’t have been easy.

    I hypothesised 2 weeks ago that Shaw would let things ride to the election then after 23 Sept form a Green/non rabid commie grouping of 5 to 7 people that could then sell themselves as a block to the Nats. This could solve a host of issues.
    New Green or Green 2000 along the lines of New Labour.
    
    The way Shaw has played his hand in the last few days he is on the rabid ‘poor people/lets all have a sook /gimme more’ side.

    This will affect the gender balance even more although Clendon may not have made it anyway.
    I think they lose 3 months salary paid to exiting MPs that lose in the election. This applies to electorate MPs. I’m not sure about list. So if they are not available then no salary after 23 Sept I guess.
    Kennedy Gollan Montrose Graham, now in his seventies, will (should!) not need the money.
    
    They kept it out of the 6 pm news but it will get hours of airing on the brekky shows.

    cmm: I think that is perhaps a little harsh…the most damning revelation – that she was almost certainly living with the father in 1993 and thus not entitled to receive the DPB at all – only emerged last week…and these guys are both – particularly Mr Clendon – almost certainly walking away from the largest salary they will ever obtain. Graham is well over 60, and Clendon does not have a profession to return to.
    
    Perhaps they could have done it earlier, but I give them credit for doing it now. Better late than never as they say.

I just heard the mouth of three make another of his idiot claims. Paddy Gower just made a statement that David Clendon on the Green MP that once made a statement that Homeopathic Medicines can cure Ebola is one of two Green MP’s to resign in protest against Turei not resigning and also called him a highly respected member of the Greens. The other member is Kennedy Graham who is respected.

  It was quite interesting this morning listening to 2 women on my street in Remuera talk about Metiria Turei.
  
  One of them (who is a lawyer) was quite adamant that Metiria had done a crap thing (and she talked about how MeTu probably did live with the father and had a mother for a “flatmate”), and the other one quite literally said it didn’t bother her. How can it not bother you? She was fleecing you, the taxpayer.
  
  I had to laugh how apparently they both know lots of single mums, so they know it’s hard to get by as one.

I thought one of the greens may have tried to roll Me Tu for the co-leadership before the election. Guess when Shaw is so committed to her Me Tu still holds enough cards. Me Tu is obviously light on her feet to be able to out manouver possible competition, but perhaps any green with the balls to challenge can have a Morris Dance-off competition for the co-leadership. ????

Well, this election is turning out to be entertaining at least. Talk about a dramatic two weeks!

The question is what effect this will all have in the minds of the voters. The as yet unproven “Jacinda effect” aside, the Left are not looking at all stable and ready for government. I can barely wait for the next set of polls. More popcorn please! 🙂

I wonder if Graham and Clendon know more about Turei’s situation than is in the public domain, and took a principled stand hoping Turei would stand down herself before things get worse for the Party (eg if anything further damning comes to light)?

(But they then lost out when the Green Party accepted their resignations and rubbed it in further by announcing the next people on the list will now step up).

It’s a shame every remaining MP’s in the Green Party – every single one of them – do not have principles, including the new wannabe MP’s Holt, Golriz and Swarbrick. Not only despicable but they will be forever tainted.

Unlike the honorable Kennedy Graham and David Clendon, who now have a clear conscious …

A travel company’s outlandish advert featuring nude air hostesses has gone down like a lead balloon with customers. Kazakhstan’s Chocotravel released a video promoting their budget flight services, which adds nothing to the price of a plane ticket.

I wonder what kind of “budget flight services” (which add nothing to the price of a plane ticket) they have in mind!
