Let’s see if their subbies can read KiwiBlog comments in somewhat better a fashion than they can proof-read their own Editorials.

    It wasn’t her biological family members who killed her.
    A child is 50 to 100 times as likely to be killed by a non-biological parent figure than by their real parent.
    Society should be providing incentives for parents to stick together in order to protect kids.

        You are being stupid. It is a known statistic that more children are abused/battered/killed by men who are NOT their biological fathers.
        Of course one could say that if more biological fathers shaped up to their parental responsibilities and stayed with the mother of their kids, the problem would largely resolve itself but this assumes that the biological fathers would not abuse their own children.
        In my opinion it is Maori women who hold the key.
        It is they who can insist on better behaviour from their menfolk.
        It is they who can say: no more kids.
        But we all condone this state of affairs by paying for them to produce more children, fathered by passing males.
        The welfare state is serving up what we permit it to do.

        Flash: totally agree with the fact we are condoning this situation for paying single women to drag up children to every passing male.
        BUT women from male-dominated cultures such as Maori have very little power over their men.
        In all sexist cultures males learn from an early age that they have all the rights and women are there to serve and obey them.
        That’s why far more Maori women are supported on the DPB, instead of by their children’s fathers.
        That is why young Maori girls aged only 13 to 17 have FOUR TIMES the birth rate of any other race.
        But Maori women get no support from their sisters either.
        Maori leaders like Dame Tariana Turia reckon it’s a good thing that young Maori girls are becoming (single) mums in their early teens…it’s “our fertility” she says.
        This is why most abused and murdered children in our country belong to one sexist cultural group.

        Do you disagree with this?
        When a father walks out on his children, and has virtually no further contact with them, and leaves them in a vulnerable situation, then he deserves condemnation.
        So do the low types of women who invariably entice these jerks away, knowing they are fathers of young children.
        Human society is dependant on strong families.
        That means men and women doing their best for their children.
        I am just as critical of women who desert their husbands and children.

        Steven Pinker put it very well when he said that it’s NOT that there are all these terrible evil men everywhere…it’s that young children put incredible pressures on the adults caring for them.
        Sometimes it is only that biological bond that enables a man to resist the urge to lay into a child.
        Obviously non-related males seldom have that bond.
        I have always thought that any woman stupid enough to leave her young child in the sole care of a male not it’s father is asking for trouble.

I know Social media have already gone to town about last night’s Civil Defence test warnings, but really who thought it was a good idea to set the test at 1.30am.
Given all phone companies were I evolved & Civil Defence, someone really had a brain fart!
This caps off the experience that Rodney residents had on two nights (between 2am and 2.45am) before election day when every landline subscriber got phone calls from one of the party’s phone calling robot.
Do political all partied and govt agencies not respect citizens’ rights to PRI act?

    Has anyone really thought about this system?
    
    To us, it smacks of nanny state knee jerk reaction. The only possible use is for a Tsunami or potential for flooding (like Edgecombe springs to mind). Trouble is Tsunami warnings in the past 5 years have been & have led to over reactions, eg last year’s East Cape earthquakes led to Tsunami warnings for the whole of East Coast North Island, this led to the shut down of Auckland’s train service. This was a gross over reaction, given that it was physically impossible for a Tsunami to hit the Waitemata Harbour from an earthquake close to East Cape.

People can keep saying they will favour the Greens and Labour but the shit had hit the fan about the fraudulent Leader not long before that and would have still been in people’s minds so let’s hope Saturday is a continuation of the Greens downward slide.

  I know that has not been what historically happens, but nothing seems to have followed history this election.
  
  I believe Greens normally gain, but maybe MeTu broke that. It is mathematically possible (but highly unlikely) that Green could drop below 5%.

    I’ve got several groups of friends in the UK who will all have voted Green because due to a bit of dodgy reportage that all think that NZ kids roam around in rags begging, sleeping in cars at night and the Greens will fix all that up. There’s other stuff related to our uncaring right-wing government that has convinced them that tax payers money should be redirected from the Corporate welfare giving to cleaning up the ghettos of South and West Auckland.     I suspect it will be a little more pronounced this time around peterwn. The Greens and Labour both put a lot of effort into enrolling people in the last days of the campaign, and I believe each will pick up a seat. Whether that’s two from National or one each from the Nats and NZF remains to be seen.
    
    Losing one seat would certainly weaken Peters’ bargaining position.

1. Most gun deaths are in “tight” gun control; areas run by the Dems, and
2. More ( about 50,000 deaths occur in auto accidents about – 34,000 via the gun.

      It is only the sound suppressing capability that fails, the silencer itself doesn’t… nor does it melt, unless you are using a coke bottle as a silencer… And yes, I have a silencer and have used a number of firearms with silencers.
      The concerns with a silencer is that it takes much longer before you can identify (by sound) where the damage is coming from and identify that someone is actually shooting.

    The President doesn’t introduce laws in their system. Also it’s not a law at that stage, it’s a bill.
    I think you’ll find that Obama pushed for gun control related bills to be introduced, but they got nowhere for obvious reasons.

Today in a very busy day for Wellington . With the first passenger ship of the summer period arriving. Also in the middle of the school holidays.the Union calls a strike. Shades of when it was fashionable to do the same with the inter-island ferry crossings. Always in the school holidays.
Not a worry or a problem disrupting businesses or the holiday programmes and travel of young families.
Maybe what is happening today with the trade Union disruption of rail services,is just a fore-runner of what will happen if we end up with Lie-bour/Green mafias winning the treasury benches.

        Why do they want to get landlords out of renting properties?
        
        If they do this, people will still need to rent, but there won’t be private housing stock available. That increases demand for state housing and makes HNZ the landlord.

The stupid Greens (aka Redmelons) have already committed to Labour and, notwithstanding that they have never in 20 years had any political power, they refuse to consider a coalition with National.

Why stand for Parliament if the objective is simply to keep a few seats warm – all via their MMP list. They got 5.9% but will probably go to 6.5 and may be get an extra list MP when Special Votes are tallied next week. That would give them 8 list MPs. But the election trend saw them drop substantially so the traditional green increase may not occur.

NZ First, which is to say Peters (aka the modern reincarnation of Machiavelli, and the only NZ first person that counts), got 7.5 % and now has 9 list MPs. In my view, Peters is unlikely to get any more.

Labour got 35.8% and now has 45 seats – 29 constituency/electorate and 16 list.
National got 46% and now has 58 seats – 41 electorate and 17 list.

When the Specials are included, the conventional belief is that Labour will pick up 1 seat(list) and the Nats will lose 1. But that is only a minor change in the context of the whole affair and, if the GE trend extends to the Specials, the Nats could hold firm at 58 or even increase to 59.

  The number of special votes is up by a third over 2014. If the distribution of specials runs the same way as it did then – even allowing for the changed base vote – National would drop 1.3 to 44.7% and 56 seats; Labour would go up to 36.5% and gain one seat; the Greens would go up to 6.4% and gain a seat; NZF would slip slightly to 7.4% – no change in seats.

  Immediately after the flood there was a public meeting in Edgecombe. I think some of the locals were scathing in their criticism of the local authority ignoring their comments about the sub-standard stopbanks. As the truck drivers of Edgecombe did not have post-graduate degrees in hydrology or civil engineering their common sense comments were ignored. They were immensely annoyed. Now they will be madder still that Sir Michael Cullen has ignored their warnings as well.

Having read the report into the Edgecombe floods, the report written under the Chair ? of call me Sir Cullen for the Regional Council gives no application to who is responsible. Surely that is because the Council paid for the report and that the residences are suing the Council.
The conclusion was that it was nobody’s fault but the Council and others will have a conversation.
Why do we have to have conversations about everything following Taxinderella’s failed electioneering. She used the comment very regularly – which actually suggests I will talk to anybody if they want about anything rather than facing actual facts. Fluffy expression.
Surely this could be a meeting over cakes and tea ?

  I also noted that the conclusions were identical to my own and I’ve never been to Edgecumbe.
  Too much water, not enough stop bank, knew it was breaching, didn’t tell residents, didn’t work it out for themselves.

Some time ago the WO blog site was almost daily hostile to Mr Peters in the blogs comments. In fact derogarty.
Wonder what has happened to the site. There has been a huge turn around in the support for Mr Peters. It looks as if the WO site owner has become the self appointed guard dog for Mr Peters. Going out of its way to make fun of any legitimate comment or action by all and sundry who may or may not be involved with Mr Peters.
In fact some of the comments by the WO owner has bordered on childish and kindergarten play, to the point of oafishness .Wonder what type of agenda is being played out here. Or is there something more sinister.Lets hope not.

Events of 1990’s had left National in a mess and it could not be an effective opposition after 1999 despite Michelle’s and Bill’s best efforts.         But then Tesla is massively overvalued and will get swamped by bigger players in near future, it will get bought out by a big car company at small fraction of current value in a couple of years.         Nasa and old rocket companies are pretty much incapable of innovating or developing hardware in either an economic or timely manner. Nasa has spent 10’s of billions on Shuttle replacement, with nothing flying. United Launch Alliance receives billions a year from NASA just to keep their doors open (actual rocket flights charged on top of that). Ariane and ULA are currently planning to try and build new rockets that won’t fly until 2020’s and yet will be more expensive than existing SpaceX rockets.

        Any company in the space launching business is dependent on government money.
        
        You might as well say that Lockheed Martin would fail without government money. That is obviously true of a business whose principal customer is the government. Compared to Elon Musk, LM has had many hundreds of billions already on the F35 contract. It is probably the most bloated defence or government contract ever.
        
        Even you would have to concede that SpaceX has radically improved launch technology, way beyond the established aerospace companies who had become fat and happy relying on US government contracts.

All societies need you grow in order to develop and thrive. Humans now have better, healthier, better fed, more comfortable and far longer lives that at any time in history and this amazing progress has come hand-to-hand with our rapidly expanding (in the past 200 years) population.

I’ve got absolutely no time for these ‘lower population’ arguments, whether they be national or globally derived.

One point though, is worthy of consideration. Although we would benefit immensely from having a growing population, we seem hell bent on destroying our own breeding potential and we’re concentrating instead on importing immigrants. Whilst a fairly low level of immigration is not (IMHO) a problem, NZ has become reliant on immigrants to keep our economy going. This is not healthy. Why don’t we breed more New Zealanders instead of importing people from overseas?

I’ve checked and the article is still on the Coalition for Marriage’s website. The ABC article I’ve linked to shows a cropped photo which, in my view, is misleading.

A famous reconstructive surgeon says that people are lining up to reverse their sex-change surgery but no one wants to talk about it.

At present, Prof Djordjevic has a further six prospective people in discussions with his clinic about reversals and two currently undergoing the process itself; reattaching the male genitalia is a complex procedure and takes several operations over the course of a year to fully complete.

Those wishing the reversal, Prof Djordjevic says, have spoken to him about crippling levels of depression following their transition and in some cases even contemplated suicide.

“It can be a real disaster to hear these stories,” says the 52-year-old. And yet, in the main part, they are not being heard.

Last week, it was alleged that Bath Spa University has turned down an application for research on gender reassignment reversal because it was a subject deemed “potentially politically incorrect”. James Caspian, a psychotherapist who specialises in working with transgender people, suggested the research after a conversation with Prof Djordjevic in 2014 at a London restaurant where the Serbian told him about the number of reversals he was seeing, and the lack of academic rigour on the subject.

To date, all of his reversals have been transgender women aged over 30 wanting to restore their male genitalia. Over the last two decades, the average age of his patients has more than halved, from 45 to 21.

Just watching 1 News and they played a report from ABC on Trump visiting the site of the catastrophe in Puerto Rico. Of course, they had to be critical. At one point Trump compared the numbers of dead between Katrina and the current death toll. It turned out to be 17 dead vs the many thousands dead in Katrina. Trump quoted the number and said to the official, “so you and your team have done very well”. The reporter though, from ABC could only say that Trump was comparing numbers as though from a ball game.

WTF is wrong with these people? They have so much Trump derangement syndrome that they have to find fault in any little thing he does. It’s ridiculous.

  The ABC reporter seemed to be correct based on the clip I saw. Fewer people died in Puerto Rico than from Katrina but it was surely possible to point this out more tactfully (and, perhaps, at a more tactful time and location). Obama and Clinton could have managed it and Reagan and Bush I could probably have done it, but Trump, like Bush II, is a verbal klutz.

The US has expelled 15 Cuban diplomats, saying Havana failed to protect US diplomats from mysterious acoustic attacks.

Nearly two dozen US personnel have suffered unexplained ill health in the city.

At least 21 people working at the US’s embassy in Cuba have reported health problems, ranging from mild brain trauma and deafness to dizziness and nausea.

Earlier reports suggested sonic attacks were to blame, but nothing has been proven.

Cuba denies targeting embassy staff, and the US has not blamed the country’s government for the suspected attacks.

Last week US officials said: “We don’t know the means, the methods or how the attacks are being carried out.”

How long are we to get double speak out of this White House – it is not only Tilletson and Trump proffering different views on N Korea, but there is now Defence Sec Mattis saying the deal with Iran is good for the US while Trump considers pulling out of the deal.

It does smack of good cop bad cop, sane and the insane, but then again maybe Trump is simply posing as staunch to the GOP voting base, while the other two are simply representing professional expertise (which continues from administration to administration).

The downside is that Trump is seen as a loose cannon in the wider world who needs to be restrained by the establishment from doing the wrong thing. And at home paranoia that Trump cannot act on his mandate (reckless posturing to the public when out of government power) because he is not allowed to.

  In the meantime the top pay level for a stock standard teacher is a puny $70,000. No wonder Auckland schools cannot fill vacancies.

    I appreciate most of the work they do with our children.
    But I have never liked their superior holier than thou attittude, and the way the teachers union tries to dictate to the government.
    For instance they often bang on about teacher shortages. But that is up to the government who has to pay them.
    They were also in the vanguard of the no discipline movement that Labour brought in way back and that now comes home to bite them.
    
    Their strong unions annoy me. Why are they clever enough to negotiate their own salaries?

    Easy they’ll get rid of 14.5% of teachers whilst simultaneously reducing student/teacher ratios (please do not try and equate those two statements or you’ll go mad).
    
    Over 4 years salary increases are more than 10% so that means about 900 less police officers. And then there’s all the other Ministries and Depts which will have to shed 10% of their staff. Unless they tell the unions to get stuffed and there’s going to be a pay freeze for 4 years.

Council defends hole in bus shelter logic

Summary: (1) 4 years of planning + (2) $300,000 of ratepayers’ money = (3) bus shelter with a large hole in the roof.

The Marlborough District Council’s explanation:

The hole actually represents the Māori name for the Wairau Valley, Kei puta te Wairau, which means “the place with the hole in the sky” or “the place with the hole in the cloud”. The rest of the shelter, designed by architects in Christchurch, is meant to mimic the peaks and valleys of Blenheim’s Wither Hills. It also has a space protected by reinforced glass walls.

So the reason for having a bus shelter with a large hole in the roof: some tenuous connection with Kei puta te Wairau and the Wither Hills.

A breakdown of how the council spent its $300,000 on the shelter has been requested.

That’ll be interesting!

      I hope not Sooty. Just imagine the cost of a culturally-appropriate tree-planting ceremony. And that’s after the costs associated with all the hui that will be needed to appoint a Kei puta te Wairau committee, and for the committee members to decide (with appropriate levels of culturally-appropriate stakeholder consultation) which type of tree will be planted, what direction it should face, and what the tree’s name should be.     The consensus (mixed views either way) seemed to be that I should try calling him. I tried but no one answered. The fact that his telephone line is still connected is potentially good news. After reading your comment, I’ve just tried again, but no one answered.
    
    Two possibilities that come to mind are extended travel and hospitalisation. I really hope he’s ok.

I think it has to be the highly refined elderly with mobility problems.
(any self-respecting old codger can fly up to Thailand/Phillipines etc and purchase a couple of wives for well under $150,000 – and any sly old bird can get a couple of toy-boy student lodgers el cheapo, these days).

Tamaki Redevelopment Company Ltd (TRC) and Tamaki Regeneration Ltd (TRL) are two separate companies, with different shareholders, Constitutions, ‘aims and objectives’.

Tamaki Redevelopment Company was supposedly focused on ‘regeneration’ of Glen Innes, Pt England and Panmure.

However, Tamaki Regeneration Ltd, IMO, is actually delivering gentrification, on behalf of private property developers and investors.

Why is TRL not equally listed as a Sch 4A Company under the Public Finance Act, as is TRC?
