Red Radio has been reporting on finding the grave site containing the bodies of 12 soldiers and sailors from the battle at Ruapekapeka. They say this was the “country’s first major battle”.

Can this be right or should they be referring to the first major battle between maori and the British? It appears to ignore all those earlier battles between peace-loving iwi prior to the arrival of the dastardly foreigners. Time they changed their name to Revisionist Radio.

  Using Google translator, I have found that Espiner’s morning preamble translates into ‘Good morning, I am the pretentious twat Guyon Espiner with a ho’’
  
  So many words for something that can be said in fewer words, something we already know and have learned to take for granted, and without any hint of the sanctimonious smugness that is the start to too many of my mornings!

        Si, yo tambien. Je parle deux autres langues et yī diǎn zhōng wèn, but no Maori because its a useless language that has almost no relevance to anything that interests me, frankly.
        
        The main advantages of and motivation for learning a language are either its usefulness or because one is interested in the culture. Neither of these apply to Maori as far as I’m concerned.

      I teach a lot of those kids from South Auckland who are supposedly so multilingual. True, some know a smattering of other languages, but very few are actually fluent in any language. (Unless Gangsta Speak is a language). I consider myself reasonably fluent in English and can converse with degrees of success in three others although I would not consider myself fluent. However, I am getting more and more irritated with the lack of respect for one of our Official languages as it is constantly bastardised with interjections from another. The only time it is suitable to use a foreign word is where no suitable word exists in the language. Eg schadenfreude – As there is no succinct English version of the word, English-speaking peoples have approximated this word.
      
      By the way, Morrisey, how many languages are you fluent in?

    It’s questionable whether it was a major battle. On the scale of the battles the British fought around the world that century, it was quite small, and many of the other NZ battles were skirmishes.

The Grand Rapids police force consists of Michigan’s worst and stupidest.

Honestie’s unfortunate brush with the law happened last Wednesday when she was confronted by officers as she was leaving her house by a back door to go to the store.

“They had police cars all over this street, they had police cars all along the alley,” she said.

Honestie said the officers had their guns drawn and they ordered her to walk backwards with her hands up. Then after slapping on some handcuffs, she said they patted her down and they took her to the waiting squad car.

“When my mom was walking past, I was putting my hands through the little bars, banging on the windows screaming, ‘Please don’t let them take me!'” she said.

  And here’s a difference with “conservative” commenters – that action was entirely wrong and the relevant “officers” should be at a minimum suspended and charged. Mistreatment is mistreatment and we don’t care if the person involved was any specific colour or age. Most on the left would have laughed and said she’d got what she deserved if the child was white.
  
  There’s a single reason I can think of that the officers might be able use as a reason for their behaviour – that they were concerned that the child was at risk from her aunt who might try to use her as a hostage. However the way they handcuffed the child would make that extremely difficult to maintain and I suspect that a jury would agree.
  
  Is it worth noting that Grand Rapids has a Democrat Mayor and council and has had for a long time? Plus poor child with a name like “Honestie”

I had to laugh yesterday when Gareth Morgan said he won’t be standing for parliament again as he couldn’t stand being in that zoo if he actually succeeded winning 5% and entered the place .
what a fricking tosser ,so much for dedication to the cause he didn’t want to be in parliament ,,,WTF.
So what the silly prick really wanted to do was waste 5,000,000 dollars, he’s behaving like fucking greeny.
my kids call him Concorde because with that nose and those ears if bent over and run down the road he’d look like the Concorde taking off.

The government spends millions of taxpayer dollars annually to encourage Maori language, yet the percentage of Maori capable of holding a conversation in their language dropped between 1996 and 2013 from 25% to 21.3%. It would seem that Maori themselves have little interest in speaking their native tongue.

Those in power in Aotearoa/ NZ have come up with the the obvious solution to prevent the continued decline of Maori: if Maori can’t be bothered to learn it then force pakeha NZers to learn it instead. Problem solved!

  I would have though that people whose blood is less than 50% Maori (i.e., Pakeha in the Japanese sense) would comprise the vast majority of those learning Te Reo and pumping it full of modern synthetic terminology (doing their best to avoid transliteration*) to force it to cope with the new world.

  Maori (purity and mana mean we cannot “borrow” from another language) “rorohiko”

  Yes my daughter is being forced to do it next year at college. She already speaks Mandarin and is going to take up Latin next year and I see no reason for her to learn a language she will never use in daily life.

        I actually recommend learning Latin. You can understand Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, the history of words, you can study medicine and biology or get a job creating new names for products or companies.

        Harkman, theoretically yes, but during years of Latin at school, we spent too much time on grammar and sentence structure to built up a really good vocabulary. It might have been more useful to either learn a lot of Latin vocabulary or just learn one of the related languages you listed.

        It is so easily to swear in English, with its nouns (that refer to sexual organs or bodily fluids/solids) and verbs (that reference sexual activity).
        
        Japanese has no such recourse.
        
        However, Japanese does have a couple of deadly personal pronouns that would only be used in the direst of circumstances when physical violence is imminent.
        In all my years, I have only heard them uttered in movies; never in real life.
        
        The closest equivalent in English would be the (now extinct) centuries-old challenge “On Guard!” (And with a similar outcome expected.)

    It’s a fossil. There is some use for it on Marae but only at the level of serious cultural involvement. That requires knowledge not imparted otherwise.
    
    Teaching in schools can only be political as the utility is zero. That could be negative as it wastes resources and pupils time.

      That’s what makes English so great. So many different ways of expressing the same idea. Go the German way or the French way. I can’t remember which English novel starts with characters complaining that if you’re a Saxon peasant you looked after the cows and swine, but if you were the rich French owner you’d actually get the beef and pork.

    Good on your daughter, CHFR1. Latin is extremely valuable for all sorts of reasons. Doctors, lawyers, horticulturists, historians etc. find it really useful. It is an important root of English, but you wouldn’t expect brain dead idiots like ztev to understand that.

      I had to read and understand Latin in 3rd form. And translate – it was a nightmare getting all the tenses right – we learnt the verbs by rote.
      I managed it for 3 years and then was (thankfully) able to drop it for School Cert.
      But it gave me an appreciation of languages. French was a breeze.

    Our English language is based on Latin, among other languages, to quite an extent. You can work out the derivative of an English word if Latin is involved, but for the life of me I can’t trace most words back to Maori (unless slang).

  Evidence that people who are not interested in learning a language don’t learn it or largely neglect it when no longer forced to use it is ignored by our self-righteous masters.
  
  On a related topic, after repeated, vague assertions on GD about the educational benefits of learning a second language, having taught for several decades through various educational fads supported by more enthusiasm than evidence, I recently started searching the Internet (OK, it’s not the most reliable source) for relevant evidence and specific, substantiated learning outcomes. So far, it seems that:
  1) There is evidence of publication bias against studies which do not support the terrific benefits narrative.
  2) Some published studies report contradictory results.
  3) The greatest benefits occur in family and social situations unlikely to be true for the vast majority of compulsory Maori learners.
  4) Internet reports of these studies often omit clear quantitative statements of outcomes.
  5) Internet reports also omit necessary detail about the adequacy of controls and how concepts were operationalised.
  
  These were common problems back in the day when I regularly read educational research, a great deal of which was junk science, hence the popularity of meta studies.
  
  To be fair, you could probably embarrass any educator defending or proposing any national compulsory policy by asking exactly what percentage of students will benefit in what way by how much by when as a consequence of that policy.

  I’m certainly not sorry to see Street go, but I am somewhat a wee bit sad to see Hosking go. The show would have been much better if it was only Hosking I think. It evolved into a shallow talkfest in the end. I just love the cut and thrust of good current affairs, and we haven’t seen that type of content for quite some time. I can’t be bothered with Q&A these days. It will be interesting to see who fills the spot……
  As I don’t watch Breakfast anymore due to the current lineup, I just hope TVNZ doesn’t promote Hilary Barry to the role.
  Good journalists are as rare as hens’ teeth these days. I was always of the opinion that Street was very average and, quite honestly, I wondered how on earth she got the job in the first place.

      It’s looking like Barry has signed deal to move to Seven Sharp. I’m now wondering that’s why Hosking decided to leave. I can’t understand why they need a co-host. I was always hoping Street would either leave or not get her contract renegotiated as I believed she did nothing for the show other than downgrade it. Looks like TVNZ aren’t seeing the light. I don’t watch Breakfast as a result of Barry’s pontificating and all the other ho hum people , so I certainly won’t be watching Seven Sharp either, nor The Project for that matter.       Apparently the legal Salbutamol limit is very generous so they don’t catch anyone unnecessarily, like 10-20 puffs in 4 hrs, Froome had double the limit. When interviewed that day he looked physically fine. Since they started testing with the ABP athletes can no longer get away with massive amounts of epo, steriods, blood transfusions, SARMs etc but they all now microdose or use grey area products. Brit’s are on the cutting edge of all of this and mark my words their rugby players are the worst, they are doping big time.

  I got myocarditis about 15 years ago. (Woke up feeling a bit off colour – went to work, but told to go home as I looked grey… could barely walk up hill to house…taxi to medical centre, ambulance to A&E…)
  
  Cause unknown.
  I am very suspicious that it resulted from a slight ear infection some months earlier.
  
  Good news was that a course of ibuprofen had me up & about within 24 hours.

Tax on income up to $22,000 was to be 10.5%.
Tax on income over that up to $52,000 was to be 17.50%
To think that the fat controller Robertson and a liar can call tax cuts like that for the wealthy is an abomination.
Seems anyone who have no children or are single will not be eligible for any taxcuts or an amount of benefit handout up to a total of $163 extra dollars per week. Whats going on . Thanks to wee dictator Peters thats what is going on .

  I do not often agree with what they say but it doesn’t annoy me.

Wonder if the Takapu /Grenada new Motorway link up from Transmission Gully to Petone which is on the drawing board to be enacted has now been stalled. Maybe to be put in the so called too hard basket .Much same as the East /West new motorway in Auckland.

Morning, from the department of no wonder project costs blow out and our local govt politicians should not be left in charge of anything…..

This week’s Mahurangi Matters reports that on 13 December that the AT project team planned to complete sealing of Takatu Road, abroad to a regional park in North Rodney. Well done, but that is where the good news ends.

The road is 4.5km in length, was started in March 2016, and was meant to be finished in June (so it is 6 months late). It was budgeted to cost $4m but will cost $5.3m (so only $1.3m over budget). The reasons for the delay and the blown out budget include:
1. The late running of another project;
2. The wet winter in Northland;
3. “The estimate was based on the per km cost of a straightforward basic road sealing project. However, the location and terrain of the final Takatu Road section, combined with the need to bring the road up to required engineering and road safety standards, meant it had been far from a case of simply putting seal on an existing road” (Mark Hannan AT).

Now the standard cost estimate AT uses is $450k. Anhighe traffic volumes for this piece of road 302 cars on a Sunday in June 2015.

The next road that will receive the sealing attention of AT is Ahuroa Road. Ahuroa Road’s unsealed sections & sealed sections needing to be brought up to specification is circa 15km, and it carries more than 400 vehicles plus trucks on a quiet day.

As a sub text to this post Beth Holbrooke (Rodney Local Board Chair and ACT Party deputy leader) had a Facebook post earlier this year celebrating the opening of with local ward councillor (Greg Sayers). My wife highjacked her celebration by writing back questioning the project over run & how they could guarantee Ahuroa Rd would happen given AT’s budget for road sealing is $1m per year. Holbrooke was silly enough to come back with the number of $450k. My wife pointed out how inaccurate AT’s cost give the road opening she was celebrating was 100% over its original estimate.

Bringing us back to Takatu Road, the issues are:
1. The processes AT uses to understand, plan, design & prepare engineering requirements for projects appear to be woeful – to the extent they will be desk exercises with no understanding of the roads;
2. The question begs WTF do they go out to tender on?;
3. Clearly, there base value of $450k per km to seal roads is way out, given Takatu Rd cost $1.33m per km;
4. If, the cost of road sealing is closer to $1.33m per km, how effective is a budget allocation of $$1m per annum for road sealing going to be?.

Given that Auckland has over 850km of unsealed roads, what is the chance AT has even the remotest clue about how long & much this will cost? None, is my guess.

As for Ahuroa Road, this road is meant to be sealed over the next 3 years. Recognising the length, the complexity, & the issues above, expect this road project to cost $75m to $100m (not $7m to $10m) and to take 10 years to complete (not 3 years).

What this says about AT, is:
1. They are a public waste of money & don’t have a clue what they are doing;
2. Expect a major cost blow out on CRL; and
3. Goody’s demands will never be met by his $0.10 fuel tax, because AT don’t even understand what they are doing.

Finally, I am brought back to Beth Holbrooke as an example of everything that is wrong with local & central government in NZ. This is a lady who runs successful local businesses, but hasn’t got a clue about managing anything bigger; is responsible for spending and managing public funds etcetca. Yes, she is a local example, but when you look at further levels of government, you are left shaking your head at just how unqualified these people (on all sides of the political divide) are to make decisions on behalf of all New Zealanders. Is there a solution to this?

    For once Morrissey, I am in agreement with you, morons will kill themselves on that road when it is sealed.
    
    But is the possible misadventure of noons who may be candidates for a Darwin award a valid reason to make locals suffer 15km of shitty road? Currently, there are patches of the road that are bare clay, and become dangerous in wet weather.
    
    Residents of such areas pay taxes and rates, but their requirements for services get ignored. Is that a just proposition?

I still can’t understand why everyone is saying that this mini-budget looks good, but tight, when they even state that there are a number of LAB/NZF/GRN policies that have not been developed and costed.

Considering that $660m annually is not even really enough to keep up with standard increases to Government expenditure, how will these policies be paid for?

Will National commit to axing these unaffordable programmes when the deficits start rolling out?

  Further to this, reading through ASB’s HYEFU review, there are some quite substantial differences of opinion between treasuries forecasts and ASB’s.
  
  Particular areas where it appears they see differences are Government consumption lowering from 3.4% (current) to 1.0% over 3 years, whereas ASB sees it increasing to 4.1% immediately and staying there.
  
  There are also notable differences in residential investment where it looks like they see government crowding out private investment, and non-residential staying around current levels.
  
  The numbers almost read like treasury were told that they needed an end result to be xx and what forecast would be plausible to reach this?

Bruce Russell Newstalk ZB spent a good portion of the small hours this morning discussing the planned UN Migration Compact and the new proposed UN hate speech policing laws.

This is scary stuff indeed.

  For all that I loathe women being beaten up by their men there are some things I have never been able to understand about the female psyche.
  
  Our daughters were born within eleven months of each other, the first not being expected & her impending arrival came two weeks after we’d signed up for our first home involving two mortgages. Two jobs were the minimum to pay for everything so I ended up moonlighting as a bottle store attendant/doorman (read bouncer) for a local pub.
  
  It wasn’t as bad as it sounds & I only had a few dicey experiences in those five years but it was a lesson in human relationships. By themselves most of the blokes weren’t too bad regardless of how pissed & agro they got. Get them out the door, away from their mates & they’d settle down.
  
  It was when their hopped up mad women were involved that the shit would fly. Even if the men settled down the mad harridans would provoke them to have a go at me, patrons or even themselves.
  
  God knows what happened when they finally got home but I pity the kids resulting from such relationships. They were screwed up from the start by the example set by their loopy parents.
