    The bogus Doctor has appointed Lie-bours ex “Minister for dirt” Hodgson to oversee the new tax funded hospital in Dunedin.Even though it was meant to be privately built.
    The flap jaw bogus Doctor fired a few professionals to make sure grubby Hodgson would be installed. What an indictment .

        No objection at all to using the title of doctor by the holder of a PhD………..unless that person works in a medical environment where it is misleading. When David Clark does return to the God-bothering industry by all means he should use the title but right now it’s misleading and a tad pretentious.

        If you knew as much as you purport you would
        know that all MPs determine how they wish to be addressed.
        A “Doctor” is a medical doctor. A so called doctor” in any other discipline is a PhD. Even my dentist , who is a Doctor of Dentistry does not stoop to the use of “Doctor”. In NZ, UK and Aus. it is academic BS. The use of “doctor” by those outside the (wider) medical profession is, at best, self aggrandisement, but more likely “passing off”.
        The US has this absolutely right, and rarely budges. A Doctor or surgeon is identified as an “MD”.

        Coleman wasnt on the register of medical practitioners so wasnt entitled to call himself a ‘Doctor-( meaning medical), even in Parliament
        
        You do know that a person cant call themselves ‘lawyer’ unless they are on the roll of practitioners, even if like our good friend David Garrett they were qualified and on ‘holiday’ from the roll.

Going by their last effort in Chch Women’s, it will be immediately too small, poor layout conceptually, we will need to replace it with a new $1b hospital less than ten years later, it will be staffed entirely by rookie house surgeons because talented surgeons refuse to work in NZ under Labour’s tax and debasement policies and it will lack a helicopter landing pad. Why have we as humans got so far up ourselves that we think we can beat or be better than nature. Watching the BBC programme “Blue Planet” one is struck by how much removed from nature humans have become. If you were a fish going about your own business of feeding yourself, suddenly, out of the deep comes a fish larger than you and gobbles you up. No recourse to complaining about how unfair it was. No complaining that the gobbler was bigger than you. No complaining to Dame Devoid that the gobbler was a great white shark. (As if it was a great black shark would make it alright)
There are no SJW’s in nature. Why do we have to put up with them in our lives?

How on earth can we expect teachers to continue in the profession, never mind enter it, when idiocy like this continues?

The Herald on-line says
“A teacher who has been censured for stopping two boys banging each other’s heads against their desks says that in hindsight she should have left them to it.
The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal has found that Wairarapa College teacher Lesley Davies committed “serious misconduct” when she put her hand on the head of one of the students in a Year 9 maths class to stop him banging the other student’s head on the desk.

“We find that the respondent’s decision to apply pressure to a student’s head in circumstances where he was pushing another student’s head to a desk is conduct which reflects adversely on her fitness to be a teacher and may bring the teaching profession into disrepute,” the tribunal said.”

Society bemoans the lack of discipline and order in many of today’s youth, and point to schools as failing to impart social responsibility and respect for the individual through their teaching. We HAVE to give schools and teachers the right to stop unacceptable behaviour, and punish offenders when it occurs, the alternative is anarchy. We already suffer from young people’s who have been convinced that there are no consequences for their actions, the recent spate of Dairy robberies is clear evidence of this. Now they are being told it’s OK to smash someone’s head against a solid object: it’s not a big step from there to knives and guns and when that happens where do we go?

  The sad thing is that much of the current nonsense in education has been allowed to flourish under a National-led government who should have known better and who should have attempted to put the breaks on this ongoing foolishness. I have just finished part time work at two schools, one a primary school which has embraced the lunacy of the Modern Learning Environment, the other a secondary school where ‘identity politics’ is the overarching mantra of its dyke principal. Both schools have been captured by the trendy pc claptrap promoted by the teacher unions, the Ministry of Education and the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Sadly, we have reached the point of no return.

    This is exactly why the teacher unions want to have an iron clamp on how the ‘blotting paper students’ are taught. The real activists dwell in the Education Department, their job being to write ever more progressive ‘guidelines’ for teachers to disseminate. Ever since Clarence Beeby (mild by today’s standards) these heads would mould the minds of the young in ever more radical ways. Very few governments had dared to interfere with the way children were educated, and charter schools will be pulled into line by Labour, so how they operate will be increasingly ‘normal’.

  One at least of those children was committing a crime. The teacher had a duty to intervene and common law allows reasonable force to be used.

  Totally agree. What a stupid society we’ve become. Out of control kids are completely untouchable. So, if the teacher had grabbed the kid by the arm in attempt to stop the assault of the other kid, then that would have been acceptable. But because she put her hand on his head – that’s assault? FFS! Who wrote the manual on what teachers can and can’t do? So it’s ok then to stand by and watch a thug in the classroom potentially beat the shit out of another kid and the teacher has to think about the consequences of his/her behaviour before intervening? Total bullshit. Now this teacher has been very conveniently made redundant.

    Teachers are in loco parentis. Are they trying to shed that responsibility? It could be argued that a teacher who did not intervene in the fight cited could be in breach of a duty of care. What if a child was brain damaged that way? Is it not criminal to stand by and let that happen?
    
    Teachers’ pay must already include a premium for their legal parental responsibility. If they are to disown that we need to know.
    
    Do we have too many laws offering too much wriggle room? Has sense been dissipated?

    The teacher, principal and the Board are all liable under the Health and Safety Act……….and before ztev jumps in, yes, it was one of ours and we take ownership BUT will Hipkins propose any amendments to make the Act more suited to the school environment.

    I was some years ago CEO of a Pubic Unlisted Financial Service Company.
    I was appointed indirectly from UK as a specialist in a field in which the Shareholders (33 Companies) had little knowledge.
    It was politically backed.
    Take it from me I was there for 14 years and I can assure you it is very lonely in the buck seat, day in day out, – and you do lose sleep over the results over which you sometimes have limited control.
    Hope Cindy realises that the buck stops with her alone. Despite her boyfriend I would assume that she can keep her knowledge to herself !

      Not to mention the rather odd earrings she was wearing with the long dress at the Awards evening. They didn’t even match the outfit. Less is more PM, you need to understand that. She was also wearing those ankle boots with that dress. No doubt she’ll agree to a makeover and be dressed by some Stylist as I’m afraid Ardern’s clothing choices seem bit odd. She looked like a kid in a party dress on the day of the swearing in and for some strange reason she was wearing thick black tights with a blue/red dress, topped with a black jacket and those ankle boots! Couldn’t quite figure that one out.
      A classy woman would have worn a sheer black tights with an elegant pair of shoes with a nice heel.
      Also, the dress would have been replaced with a very well cut suit. It’s called power dressing. Just saying……

      As you know well, Maggy, ‘analysis’ of any major matters of state (especially those such as earring style choice) is usually beyond me.
      
      But my previous reference was more in the nature of inner musing about why anyone with JA’s features would wear a succession of exceptionally long, drooping and distracting earrings. I had decided in my own mind, for what it’s worth, that the choice of earrings may be simply a conscious distraction procedure.
      
      Before now, such comments could not be enunciated other than by what are commonly termed ‘sexist pigs’. But as our PM has now contracted out her visage and other physical attributes for international inspection and critiques, everyone can be assumed to have the freedom to express one’s inner-most thoughts.

What’s the story with UDC Finance, once one of the most secure places for a New Zealander to put his money and a solid lender to businesses? Has the big sale fallen through?

In January, the ANZ Bank announced it was selling UDC for $660 million to the HNA Group of China, with ownership transition to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. The Companies Office shows ANZ Bank New Zealand is still the owner of UDC, which was set up in 1938. UDC, has loans out totalling $2.8 billion. It is big in vehicle, plant, equipment and machinery financing.

HNA seems to be having problems. The Chinese group has been splashing out on assets round the world in what Fortune magazine called a frenetic buying spree. HNA is part-owner of China Air, controls a number of other airlines, has a quarter stake in Hilton, the world’s biggest hotelier with about 825,000 hotel rooms, has a small stake in Uber, and last year paid six billion US dollars for the world’s biggest technology distribution company, Ingram Micro, of America.

The Chinese Government is choking back the country’s massive outflow of investment. China’s State Council is requiring special approval for investments in areas including property, hotels, the film industry and other forms of entertainment, and sports clubs.There have been warnings the restrictions would bite in world property markets by the end of 2017.

Bloomberg says HSBC Holdings, Europe’s biggest bank by assets, has told its dealmakers to avoid pursuing business for now with HNA Group. Bloomberg sources this report to “people with knowledge of the matter.”

Bloomberg reports:

The Chinese conglomerate is facing increasing difficulties raising funds as scrutiny mounts over the acquisitive conglomerate’s surging borrowing costs. In recent weeks, S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings have voiced concerns about at least four companies because of their ties with HNA. Separately, group flagship Hainan Airlines Holding Co. canceled a bond sale, another unit scrapped a stock offering and HNA subsidiaries have been paying some of their highest borrowing costs ever.

Jamie Gray reported in the Hooerald in May that in 2016, UDC posted a record annual profit of $58.5m, driven by booming car sales and growth in forestry, transport and construction. He wrote that UDC had been up for sale for more than a year, attracting the interest of NZX-listed Heartland Bank. By December of last year, HNA emerged as a front runner.

  Its common for a business sale for the original business entity to remain with the previous owner and change its name. The new buyer has its own business entity and of course has the rights to trading name
  “On completion of the transaction, UDC will sit under and report to Global TIP Holdings.” [HNAs european financial entity]
  
  What you are looking for is this:
  TIP-HNA NEW ZEALAND HOLDINGS LIMITED
  
  As usual with these buyouts, its registered in the tax haven of the Netherlands. So we can see previous NZ tax and profits ‘disappear’ and be shifted to this offshore entity.

    If a big Chinese conglomerate buys an NZ company it’s pretty much irrelevant to us whether it goes officially to a subsidiary in the Netherlands or to some other entity in the group. NZ doesn’t miss the tax.

        Foreign companies doing business in NZ pay tax on profits made in NZ, just as NZ companies operating overseas (Fonterra, Xero, and many others) pay local tax on profit before, if they wish, bringing that profit home.
        
        The reason we have so many foreign companies in NZ is that we don’t save enough to provide sufficient capital ourselves, and because we don’t export enough to have a positive balance of payments. Borrowing overseas and selling our assets makes up the gap.
        
        But if foreign investment expands our productive industries, especially the export ones, it benefits us. The sort of loans UDC makes enable this country to grow.

      No you havent, you have displayed your ignorance how a business is sold but not the legal entity that the previous owner controlled it through.
      
      UDC ( old company) will always stay with ANZ, as there may tax obligations/refunds there.
      
      Tip-HNA Holdings NZ Ltd will have all the assets, staff and trademarks of the business which trades as UDC.
      This is totally normal, which of course you dont understand in the slightest. Your only ‘proof’ is companies register.

        Ztev, the sale by ANZ Group to HNA was conditional, and as of today is still described as conditional in UDC investment statements.
        
        UDC investors are being told that ANZ will repay UDC investors in cash or transfer them to equivalent ANZ products when the deal is sealed.
        
        The international cloud building over HNA suggests that conclusion of the deal may be difficult.
        
        As for the Tip connection: it is quite normal, in fact probably usual, for a big conglomerate like HNA, when buying a foreign company, to include it in another of its companies.
        
        TIP HNA Holdings NZ is owned by Global TIP Holdings in the Netherlands. This is essentially TIP Trailer Services Group, owned by HNA Group (International). This group provides leasing, rental, maintenance and other value added services to the transport and logistics industry throughout Europe.

        “Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation paid no tax whatsoever in 2015-16 on an Australian income of $2.9 billion. Its competitor Fairfax Media, owner of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, paid $16 million on a lower income of $1.48 billion.
        
        The payments are revealed in the third annual corporate tax transparency report required under legislation that forces the Tax Office to divulge tax details for Australian public and foreign-owned entities with income of $100 million or more.
        
        Shows how easily its done to avoid any tax at all, as News Corp ( Us company) and Chevron do it. Wont be any different here.

      The language has a limited number of root words and they can be overworked. Unlike Samoa the language is not the primary language and has not developed. An in depth knowledge is needed for use. English is being preferred throughout the Pacific and the grammar is changing to English forms too.
      
      Golriz Ghahraman probably had little understanding of the introductory greeting quoted. It’s invoking an attachment to a place. That tribal concept is foreign to us and can only remain so. It relies on culture and history for context.

  If there is any truth in colonisation being a factor in Maori suicide, is it the 7.1 per 100,000 by which Maori exceed European rates, or the 10.85 by which Maori exceeds Pasifika?

From the Herald article on BIMs (useful summary BTW, link below). I wonder if anyone considered cause and effect, and that landlords will act in their own best interests.

Of course, any half savvy landlord will not give a reason for declining an application for a tenancy. When filling a vacancy landlords will also have in mind the probablility of no more no-fault 90 day or 42 day terminations.

Families with children, particularly one-parent and Maori and Pacific families, experience much higher levels of discrimination in the private rental market, the Human Rights Commission has told incoming Minister Phil Twyford.

The commission intends to ask Twyford to enact better rental legislation that gives more security towards tenants with children and vulnerable adults.

  Well good luck with that. I recently rented out our flat in Wellington. At the appointmented time, 20 people showed up. Couples with jobs, Maori on a benefit. A guy from India just off the plane. How did we choose? No we didn’t put their names in a hat and draw one out. But I guess that would have been “fair”.

    However I do empathise with vulnerable people looking for housing. My son has mental illness. Very intelligent but behaves very oddly. Put bluntly, he trashes places he lives.
    
    No rational landlord would give him a flat. But one did. Anyway my job is to periodically untrash the flat to stop him being kicked out.
    
    The job of housing these people belongs to the state, not private landlords. Try to force them and they will sell up.

      Family should be the first port of call if at all possible. With support from the state as well, no problem with that.
      
      That is what you have stepped up to srylands. Some families don’t.
      
      (Almost half of applicants waiting for a state house are single people, and many will be in need of extra care and support. Best for them if family keep a watchful eye alongside the overstretched government. Clearly you would agree.)

Its not you skin colour but what is in your heart.
A bit like its not the balls between your legs but what drugs are in your system.
She says: “our people are disproportionately imprisoned, impoverished, and unemployed… Pākehā refuse to acknowledge the role of colonialism in our current lopsided social statistics.” I agree that if Europeans had not arrived in NZ there would be no Maori in prison, broke, or unemployed. Instead of prison there was the Hangi, can’t be poor if there is no money and the one redeeming feature, they all would have been their own bosses. Lizzie I know you write these articles over a bottle of wine but you should sober up before hitting the send key.

    Reminds me of a policeman friend on the golf course;
    My long putt stopped 3cm short of the hole. He told me that at least 95% of putts hit short of the hole do not go in, and similarly, at least 95% of people sentenced to capital punishment do not re-offend.

One does try to keep up with Current events, even if one did not vote for the current Government.

I glanced up at the news to see our New Prime Minister, and I think that the job may be taking a physical toll on her.

She is starting to look, shall I say, a bit Gaunt. I think that she is more than a little stressed by the demands of the role that 6 months ago, she had no inkling that she would have.

She has never headed a ministry, never served in a cabinet, and now she has the top job, having never been tested on the way and never having to assume any responsibility. She never won an electorate until she was gifted Mt Albert after David Shearer left.

I believe time will show that while she seems poised on the outside now, she is out of her depth, and the withholding of the coalition agreement has been done out of fear that when it is made public, it will show just how out of her depth she is.

Now that V Small has finally nailed his colours to his real mast, can we look forward to some balanced, non partisan writing?

Can we look forward to political reporters actually reporting and not editorialising, including by exclusion, “on the hoof”?

Can we anticipate that all such reporters will note that BIMs are prepared, independently, by Department CEOs and represent their wish lists?

Can we expect hard, pointed, questions to be put to Ministers when they retreat into obfuscation?

Can we expect Peters to be subject to scrutiny in relation to the missing $158,000 and to the Glenn matters?
Can we expect6 reporters to walk out when Peters, Ardern , Robertson dodge issues?

Can we expect the same gold standard to be applied equally to the National, Labour, Green and Peters parties?.

Finally, can we anticipate that in future all Stuff “Editorials” and political “think pieces” will carry the author’s name, and the caveat: “The views expressed herein are those of the author” and are not necessarily those of Fairfax” ?????

People like Milton Friedman (permanent income hypothesis/ consumption function) and others had long since known this. Strangely, Thomas Piketty said it was largely irrelevant, yet he was forced to concede that the massive reduction of inequality caused by asset destruction during ww2 caused many elderly French to starve to death in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

        Already comment is that some area’s in Auckland have a surplus of housing. Tauranga is close to that as well.
        
        Just yesterdays Stats. dept up graded their income per household to show that incomes were greater than they had previously stated and that house affordability was much better because of their long past due upgrade. ( I did post this so go back and look instead of being bone idle and lazy).
        
        and then of course the Children’s Commissioner said on Thursday that their is 20,000 less kids in poverty due to benefit upgrades and better incomes all round and that info was 18 months old. The situation will be much better when current numbers are finally revealed.
        
        And then of course the issue of lack of housing and underfeed kids etc has gone from the front pages. apparently Jacinda hgas fixed it all for ya.

      Sure, I agree. My comment though was directed at Christianity/the church in practice, not at Jesus himself. I tend to think there is a wide gap between what Jesus taught and what many Christians tend to believe and practice, and an even wider gap when it comes to European Christendom.

Given the way trolls, such as two active today – ztev and the Stephiestanis – sabotage discussion in General Debate, would it be a good idea if the threshold for GD were lowered to say a net 16 downticks? By net, I mean number of downticks less number of upticks.

It’s wouln’t be denying trolls free-speech rights, as their trollery would still be accessible.

The newspaper in a feature today about the high wages of chief executives of various council arms notes the salary at her new job.

In September, Norris was appointed chief executive of “ChristchurchNZ”, an amalgamation of Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, the city Convention Bureau, Canterbury Development Corporation, International Education, and the Christchurch City Council’s “major events” function.

Joanna’s new salary is listed as $325,000.

As I go about some of my most loathed household chores, I have time to think about things. And this snippet popped into my head and it is thus:
Labour are a bit like the errant Employer who doesn’t reference check the CV of an aspiring Employee. Presents well, looks ok – so the Employer needs someone pdq and doesn’t have time to waste reference checking, police checking etc. Offers the job, it’s accepted and the new employee appears to get down to business. But something’s missing – all the things the Employee included about themselves in the letter of application don’t appear to exist. So the Employer is pretty annoyed with himself/herself and thinks things will get better. The Employee has 90 days to prove themselves and so far not good. If the Employee is proving to be deadset useless in the run up to the expiry of the 90 day trial, then action must be taken to get rid. I think this is the bind Labour find themselves in at the present moment. They are proving unfit to Govern and there is no alternative within the Labour Govt who would be able to be promoted once Ardern gets her DCM letter (wishful thinking).
She is clearly out of her depth and unfit to run the show imo. And, what’s more, Winston knows/knew of all her deficits as well. So far the COL is proving it’s complete lack of competence. All those things Ardern campaign on in the first 100 days in office are a joke. For Ardern to actually say that it’s possible for a Politician not to lie is an oxymoron. All Ardern has done since taking over the PM role is lie through her teeth. There, rant over…..

    This has happened frequently over the decade plus I’ve been on here.
    And also unfortunately I am afraid that sometimes the only way to get rid of them is to give them so much shit that they either leave or make a mistake and get a strike and hence get banned.

    He will just snipe at everyone all day and every day.
    It’s disruptive and that is entirely his intent. He seems to get satisfaction out of deliberately upsetting people.

        Allister Heath writes in the Telegraph (behind the pay-wall) that any Bitcoin collapse won’t have a devastating economic impact. His article includes this:
        
        The total value of all gold is about $US8 trillion, for example. The value of Apple is about $US900bn. As Capital Economics points out, even if the price of Bitcoin were to collapse to zero – and nobody is predicting this – the losses would be equivalent to a 0.6 per cent fall in US equity prices.
        
        In the overall scheme of things, few other than those directly invested would even notice – the US equity markets bounce up and down by more than that every day. But the losses would be highly concentrated, and tens of thousands of people would be ruined and some businesses destroyed. The psychological impact would be great but the systemic and macro hit still pretty small.

The systemic evil within the Catholic church defies understanding. A young priest in the USA killed a 25yo woman who went to him for confession. “An autopsy would later determine she had been beaten, suffocated, and raped while unconscious.”

So far nothing too much out of the ordinary for an organisation that insists on young priests practising unnatural celibacy BUT the subsequent police investigation into her death was stymied & hindered at every point by the venal & corrupt church.

AND

Bad enough that the wretched Church protects & defends child raping priests but now we learn that even the taking of a young woman’s life is considered collateral damage should it bring well deserved scorn & rejection of the pitiful arseholes.

How anyone, however deluded & warped by a belief in the supernatural, can play along with such behaviour beats me.

      I think the time has come to put all Catholics on a publicly accessible sex offender register. It should also be a legal requirement they declare their membership of the cult when applying for jobs. This can not carry on.

        It will carry on RC. The only question is how many of the faithful will lose their lives, sanity & spincteral integrity to the corrupt servants of the imaginary deity.
        
        For anything constructive to happen would require the Godaddled to mature & realise that they & they alone are responsible for their & their children’s well-being.
        
        But it’s easier to kneel, raise your head to the sky, close thine eyes & mutter chants to that which doesn’t exist.
