      When I went to a powhiri at Te Tii Marae the day before Waitangi Day a few years ago, it was the ladies from Te Tii doing the catering. And whatever you think about them up there, they did an awesome job, as most marae do.

An interesting last week of Parliament.
The Greens have forgone their principles and extorted concessions to allow them to support the Waka Jumping bill (Save Peters arse bill). This says a lot about the trust within NZF MPs and within the CoL itself, and is a sad indictment on the integrity of the current Government.
Treasury’s recent position on banning overseas buyers in our housing market and the minimal effect it will have on lowering house prices, coupled with the fact Australia is exempt (highest number of overseas buyers) and now looking like Singapore will be exempt also makes a mockery of this poorly constructed bill. There are now so many exemptions and caveats it’s just a bloody shambles.
I now see David Clark weaselling around the commitment to build the new Dunedin hospital, and how it will be financed. This was a concrete commitment from Labour, and to the rent-a-mob that protested at Bill English’s visit to announce Nationals rebuild plan, and now we see Labour can’t even state where they intend to build it and how they will finance it.
I hope National don’t take their foot of the throat over Christmas and build pressure so when Parliament resumes, they start will all guns blazing as we deserve better than this nonsense we are currently enduring.

        Seems ridiculously expensive , its only a 300 bed hospital and they are talking $1.2 bill plus.
        Most of the equipment can be transferred over, the food is trucked in for reheating only.

    True thedavincimode but even Treasury have started to point out “unintended consequences” or Fool Factor that comes with this rushed legislation. It will be interesting if they have the same to say when there are final some costs set for the 29 items of fiscal risk in the HYEFU.

  Don’t forget Twitford coming out and saying that the $5000 grant for people to move out of Auckland is to be sopped as its a deck chair policy. Really it was a diversion to the fact that Labours bottom line policy to make Housing NZ a real government department is to be scrapped as HNZ is actually doing a good job. They are to set up a housing commission to give more Labour ‘Old Farts’ jobs.

  The really dumb thing about the waka jumper bill is that it will force anyone that is considering jumping waka to do so immediately.

  Will a NZ company with an NZ Director, but foreign shareholding be allowed to buy a property?
  
  And if that is no, what if the overseas shareholder is an AU company, which ultimately has overseas shareholding, will that be allowed? How hard is it going to be to obfuscate the ownership, as I imagine once it has been done, it will be readily reproduced and a new industry born.

Wellingtons renters might now be suffering from Voters remorse. After all the support for the Mainstream Media fuelled “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern,knew no bounds.
Also with the anointing and “selection” by the guy called Peters ,a pest for all reasons and seasons,of the present Government.
That type of self serving decision by the pest Peters,has allowed the mad dog assault by Lie-bour/Greens on Landlords and what they are threatening to do to them,or already have.
With threats like they are about to enact,Landlords have fled the rental investment market. No wonder rents have increase almost 10% in Wellington.Who would be a Landlord.
Special “thanks” to the guy called Peters,who without his input,the common sense rental policies of Bill English and National Government,would now be helping renters ,not cruzifying them.
Once more Peters is the culprit for Wellingtons rental property increases,as well as the fast disappearing rental stock.What an indictment.

  It will be interesting. The Law is forcing private property owners to make rental houses to a greater standard than the house you live in yourself. Their is no research of any integrity that demonstrates that this is always necessary.
  So apart from investors not investing those that do will be buying more expensive housing. The result of that of course is that rents demanded to make it worth the effort will be a lot higher.

      1856 was the last big one and that lifted the valley floor up, the waterfront and the Newtown, Island bay patch as well. A 5 or 6 meter lift would kinda make a mess these days. ( did you know that prior to 1856 boats could navigate up to NaeNae? That much of the valley was swamp that wasn’t unusable for housing. )
      
      Logic suggests that Wellington ain’t a good place to own anything long term.
      Insurance must be crippling on commercials.

The defeat of Isis, the cutting of burdensome regulations, the soon to end transformation of the tax code, the decline in illegal immigration, the enhancing of respect for America around the world and a desire to make the country great again. The US economy is booming, unemployment at a new low.
  
  What about a NZ government that promoted growth? That cut corporate tax and encouraged businesses to invest here? What about encouraging manufacturing here and not just mindless importing of often dumped goods? What about jobs and really looking after the NZ worker?

    The defeat of Isis is based on the loss of key Isis strongholds in Syria and Iraq and the amount of territory they hold is now very small, if any. The reports are that of 30,000 Isis fighters in Syria and Iraq there remain now only 3000. The rest have been killed or have fled to Africa and other places around the world.
    ISIS is based on the idea of a Muslim caliphate which involves possession of land. Without land the very concept of Isis is lost.
    The defeat of Isis by US and coalition forces has been a great achievement but sadly underreported by the press.

This morning Twitford on Red Radio on why he was scrapping the incentive to move those on the waiting list out of Auckland.
First, he gave a perfect demonstration of a politician of I’ll scrap this policy because it was the last lots & I’m against it.
Second, he demonstrated (as with last weeks’ redistribution, facts are irrelevant to govt policy.
Third he is scrapping something without a replacement, except the mantra, we must build more houses, but hasn’pt got a clue except to set up yet another quango.

So, realities we have housing policy based on political whim, dogma & sound bites (a good formula, not); and
I’m none the wiser whether there is a housing crisis or not. I suppose it’ like poverty, therefore it depends on which side of the political divide you are on.

But no, if you don’t have a job because you live in Northland, then you move to where the jobs are, i.e., Auckland…and have the likes of Digmen1 questioning why you are doing so when you can’t afford a house. Is the same stuff that was said in the 1930s. So maybe rather than just criticising and/or despising the poor, we could also consider…macro-economic policy. Put it this way, past NZ governments considered it their duty to ensure all Kiwis were housed and had stable employment that could pay for rent and/or mortgages and a minimum standard of living. I hope the Aussies are noting that in NZ it is being implied that Ardern strong-armed the Australian government into back tracking on a plan to charge New Zealanders higher student fees in Australia.

Reporting the result, Stuff for instance, has a picture of Ardern with a triumphant smile standing beside the Australian Prime Minister, and a quote from Ardern on the fees is recounted:””Our view is that if those rights are removed, we should likewise do the same for our subsidised tertiary education in New Zealand.”

Jeez, Aussie, you’ve got the whip hand, controlling, first, NZ as a back door to Asian migration to Australia through visa free entry for New Zealand residents. Second, CER, one of New Zealand’s two key foreign trade agreements.

Don’t build up Ardern, Canberra.

What happens to NZ newspapers now?

News is just in that the High Court has dismissed an appeal against the Commerce Commission blocking the Merger of Fairfax NZ and NZME (owner of the Hooerald).

One answer to hard times might be selling some newspapers to regional owners and running them as a loose national business co-operative. Or perhaps the old Press Association could be resuscitated. Local ownership might moderate the Leftist orientation. This seems to be the case with the locally owned Otago Daily Times.

    Hopefully, it will be the rubbish middle management/empire building paper shufflers and “strategy/finance” men of both companies together with their army of advisors who get the boot. But chance will be a fine thing, as these rats always survive only to reappear somewhere else.
    Sadly, the people who propose these types of deals are all about money for their own pockets. They have little interest in the companies, the product/service delivered, the staff of the companies or any consequences.

More recently, as reported in the Telegraph this week, “An Australian MP was forced to quit over revelations he adopted pro-China positions after accepting donations from a wealthy Chinese property developer with links to China’s Communist Party.”

The latter has been discussed here on KB. Apparently it led to Senator Marco Rubio asking questions during some recent confirmation hearing.

But the situation in neighboring New Zealand is more urgent still. A recent analysis by that country’s most influential China watcher, University of Canterbury Professor Anne-Marie Brady, finds that “China’s covert, corrupting, and coercive political influence activities in New Zealand are now at a critical level.”

I don’t think this has got much coverage at all in any of the main political blogs, let alone KB. I’m a little distrustful when it’s one source, but her critiques match what’s happened elsewhere in the Pacific with China. The rest of the article goes into some detail on all the different methods: media, companies, land… Worth reading even if from a US perspective.

But of course despite the Vanderbilt’s being heavily implicated in all manner of child trafficking activity and dem fund raising, Anderson’s kosher on the case at CNN.

But Twitter doesn’t want people getting memes about the US unfunded liabilities and the massive reductions in national IQ occuring as the illegal immigration stream continues unabated.

        From memory; outside of his missed forward passes (which I would not hold against a referee anyway given the pace of the game and no review process in 2007):
        + Poor YC decision against Luke MacAlistair
        +Failed to return to mark of PK advantage against France after Ali Williams try disallowed on review – probably the most critical error of several in his performance as this was 5m from goal line midfield
        + Poor offside management throughout which culminated in France going some 48min without conceding a penalty – virtually impossible in the modern game
        + Inaction on the calls given by his two (more experienced assistants) and his failure to consult with them on match trends.
        
        I don’t buy the line that he refereed that game well; he didn’t, but then he was far too inexperienced to deliver a performance that game required so again, the IRB selectors must take the blame.
        
        As for 2011, do you consider the actions of Aurelien Rougerie to be fair? Given Alain Rolland correctly sent off Sam Warburton for a tip tackle in the semi-final which handed France an ill-deserved final’s berth; surely Rougerie should have met a similar sanction for his disgraceful eye-gouge on McCaw?

So I came home at 4:00PM yesterday and the TV was on ONE, going away to no one and it was the Maori news. Apparently, the useless mob we call the new government is going stop offshore drilling. They spoke to some Maori SJW princess and she said something like it being the ‘Nuclear war issue for her generation.’ Why do these people think they speak for everyone? The truth is the longer this mob is in, the more likely they are to revisit this one. A ballooning current account deficit will change everything. But I don’t grasp why these idiots don’t realise that if you export oil, the emissions become someone else’s problem and you can then use the money for whatever scatterbrained scheme you want.

  Thanks for your questions, Komata. In fact, I am probably more angry about Labour’s failures and derelictions of duty than I am about National’s. Foolishly, perhaps, I still like to imagine that Labour politicians have good hearts. Then I remember the Clark government’s persecution of Ahmed Zaoui, and Clark’s sneering putdown of Maori protestors as “haters and wreckers”, and I’m not so sure.
  
  I know I come across often as anti-National, and I often am, but as you can see if you look up my oeuvre on various sites, I am often just as anti-Labour.
  
  As someone pointed out yesterday, I even supported Kim Dotcom in his fight against the Obama regime’s cynical and corrupt disinformation campaign aimed at him. I don’t like him—after all, he foolishly gave secret payments to that scumbag John Banks—but I will support anyone being targeted by unjust and vengeful governments.

I’m sure they sometimes do, but you get the feeling that the cry of “racism!” is now a get-out-of-jail yell for many non-whites.

The Hooerald reports a Ponsonby bar brawl occurred after “alleged racist comments” to or about Indian bar staff.

The bar owner is reported as saying “… it followed racial comments being made to staff.”

The report’s headline contains the word “racist”.

The Hooerald quotes a report in its rival, Fairfax (Stuff,) saying:

… the 30-strong brawl began, according to a witness, when a group of men and women described as Caucasian yelled racial comments at bar staff of Indian descent.

Patrons of either Middle Eastern or Asian descent were also abused, the witness said.

By now some Hooerald readers will be thinking race riot.

But at the bottom of the report is this:

“Police attended and spoke to a witness however the groups involved had dispersed. There is no indication in the job that there was a racial element to the incident.”

I note that the Highways people have closed highway 29 between the highway one and highway 27 intersections. This is because of a serious accident outside the Hinuera Stone works.
Why would they close highway 29 between the Taotaoroa Road intersection and the highway 27 intersection. This is like closing the Hutt motorway between Ngauranga and Petone because of an accident at Melling.
This occupational health and safety stuff is now reaching ridiculous extremes.
