Sitting here at Akitio beach watching the boats launch… time for a second coffee.
I hope the water is a bit cleaner today…those crayfish need a warm bath. 🙂

  Not a friendly boat launch near the fishing club, and I imagine not much flow from the river this year, but once away from the surf a marvellous, uncluttered coast awaits. Only one problem: the roads to Akitio could hardly be more protective of the destination.
  BTW …..crayfish mornay for Christmas lunch washed down with Pinot Gris sounds fine to me !! 🙂

The first fatality of the holiday road toll was caused by some idiot roaring up K-Road and probably running a red light.

Yet the police will use this to continue to justify their policy of sitting at the end of passing lanes pulling over drives doing 106 km/h.

First step to solving the road toll is admitting the real problems. Good drivers (and by that I mean good decision makers) exceeding the limit at appropriate times (like when passing another vehicle, or driving on a dead straight road with a median barrier) is not one of the problems. Yet this is what police officers and camera vans target.

When I was travelling up the northern motorway the other day I saw 3 cop cars and a camera van on the 4-lane motorway with median barrier and huge shoulder areas. Didn’t see any on the much more dangerous road heading north after the tunnels though.

    Traveling on the Waikato expressway yesterday at 110 kph, the legal speed for that road. Up ahead was a car in the right lane doing 90. Just would not shift over no matter what cars behind it did.
    Every one was passing it on the left, including me. Looked at the driver as I passed and it was a woman of Asian descent.

      I think there was actually some research on immigrants and driving a while back. There were some differences for a number of immigrants (Asian and European): not learning early in life as most Kiwis do, because of public transport in big cities, also something about many lanes and you stuck to your lane, with far fewer lane switches as we’re constantly doing.
      
      In many European countries the lanes have a specific speed limit. If you want to drive slowly, you stick to your lane. I remember hitchhiking in Austria. The guy drove his Merc in the farthest lane, 130Km, blasting loud music. It was great fun, and I felt totally safe, because there were very few lane switches.

        Yes, it’s the left-hand lane in NZ. Driving slowly, keep left. Not difficult to remember.
        Perhaps driver education ads to inform drivers of basic road safety requirements instead of always targeting speed as the culprit.

      As a corollary to that, same expressway (on Thursday), I was running at 110 km/h as per the signs and being passed by EVERYTHING on the road (even loaded trucks), when a small black Japanese coupe came past. As a rough estimate he was doing at least 180 km/h MINIMUM; a case of ‘Now you see him, now you don’t’; I hope that it got to wherever it was going safely. Typically , not a copper anywhere in sight…
      
      And my point?: That despite what the AA and its ilk might say, there will ALWAYS be someone who is determined to go faster than the ‘law-abiding’ driver, and that the safety factor inherent in 100 km/h is inevitably whittled away as the speed increases (especially on wet days). The AA of course, sees that there is no problem and seems to believe that ‘all drivers are of equal ability’; despite evidence to the contrary.
      
      Higher speeds do not generate greater safety, and even the Autobahnen, held up as being the ultimate examples of ‘safe’ high speed driving, have been known to have had ‘interesting’ ‘close-encounters’ between vehicles travelling along them..
      
      There is also the small matter of increased fuel consumption which is inherent with higher speeds, although noticeably the AA is very quiet on that specific subject.

      I would like to say that I have just spent the last week having a blast around the South Island on my motorbike, and, at times, my speed may have crept up over the legal limit. Had I got a ticket, then there would have been nobody to blame but myself – I know the limit, I know the consequences.
      
      I would also like to mention that since passing my bike test in about 1997 I have done 5 or 6 different advanced riding courses to keep my skills sharp so I would like to think that I am actually above average when it comes to road sense.

        I disagree. Every collision is caused by one or more vehicle not being able to stop in time.
        
        Tyres, brakes and the road surface have a maximum rate at which they can stop a vehicle. If the gap is smaller than the stopping distance at that speed, there will be a collision. The slower the speed, the less distance needed to stop, the less chance of a collision.

    95 k’s to 105 k’s no problem. Someone driving at 75 k’s in a 100 k zone and then speeding up to 120 in passing lanes is piss poor driving. Passing in dangerous situations is piss poor driving. The problem is that the common sense gene seems to have been removed and it has an effect in every facet of our lives. I quote Forrest Gump. Stupid is as stupid does. The effect is that innocent law abiding families suffer the results of the STUPIDITY of others. It is what happens when there are no real consequences for stupid actions. As for the 4 kmh “tolerance’, worn tyres (not bald, but legal worn tyres) effect the car speedometer, so who knows exactly what speed you are actually doing. I use a GPS to monitor speed, not the speedometer. Much more accurate, BUT, Speed is not the problem. Stupidity is and try as you might, you cannot legislate foe stupidity.

    Um, no. We should always remain grateful to US action in the Pacific in WWII, but that conflict was about nations having the right to set their own course, and not have some overlord dictate to small nations.

        Bottomline: as per the experience in Vietnam, the US will support, and also withdraw support from other nations as it suits their interests. All the more reason why we should value them as a friend, but also work to strengthen multilateral security. Which we have always done in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We are the ones keeping step, they are not.

        Not especially, no. But it is better than the law of the jungle that used to prevail pre-1945. Ultimately it is up to all nations, individually and collectively, to make the UN work. And at times it has, such as in Korea in 1950, and in Kuwait in 1991.
        
        So, if annexation by conquest, stealth and increment is now something that no longer applies, then it applies to all states, including Israel. For her legitimate security needs, she is entitled to occupy Jerusalem and the West Bank, perhaps indefinitely. But pending a negotiated settlement they are not hers to incorporate into her national territory. Hence
        
        My view is that there’s no way you can take the moral high ground and spin this as a good thing for NZ.
        
        Keeping faith with our long-standing policies that have applied since 1947 and 1967 respectively seems both moral, and credible.

I have one son home this morning and the other is on the bad from Wellington and will be here later,
I am working/on call through the break so it will be quiet yet pleasant with the kids (and their mates) here and at the beach.

Despite our collective frustrations and disappointment at things political and ‘news-worthy’ over the year I for one am grateful that my family are generally well, are mostly here and we have plenty to celebrate.

      The funds are great for public development provided the economy can sustain it. NZ could not previously until the dollar was floated and “Think Big” had kicked in.
      Contributions are in NZ$ and so will the payout be. In the middle can be a big exchange risk. Ultimately super investments cannot expect to yield more than the NZ economy over time. And any super fund has a duty not to attempt to run the economy –that’s the governments right.
      The placement of funds thoughout NZ in diverse projects is proper and beneficial. Some will lose and other will gain beyond expectation but they will fund the nations development. Money can be placed with government subject to budget. but the wider the spread the better. A revenue earning airport extension is an example. Ultimately they will own a great deal but the government must remain in charge.

Governments don’t exist in the first instance to run businesses like airports, and, in the main, they do a poor and less profitable job of it compared to the private sector – as long as it is left to its devices and faced the consequences, good and bad.     Countries that have similar sovereign funds to our Super Fund include Norway. The canny Norwegians have stored much of their oil wealth in their fund that its assets are now upwards of $NZ1.4 trillion.
    
    China has a number of sovereign funds. The biggest, China Investment Corporation, has income from its investments of around $NZ100 billion a year.
    
    Singapore’s Temasek Holdings has assets of round $NZ290 billion.
    
    In a country with a low savings level, like NZ, a national super fund, which is a sovereign fund, is excellent for the economy in the long term.

    Roger Douglas was the genius who determined that the breweries were making excess profits by standing in the public bar of de Brett’s Hotel and “counting” the number of glasses served in one hour.
    The fact is that when Muldoon proposed eliminating then compulsory Douglas scheme, most folks, myself included, welcomed the pay “increase” especially since we considered that we were being asked to pay twice for superan … via excessive taxation and via the Douglas fund.

    Yep…..Rudd during the GFC reduced the super contributions that the public were allowed down from $50kpa to $25k – that’s still in force today.

    I disagree in the fact that the poorest workers have to have their money invested for them[they can do it themselves if they wish] and that is good for the nation overall. Left to their own……..[as an aside the millennials are the one’s who are becoming very active with their super and a lot of them are self managing.]
    
    But yes the super system could be much better, women for example are out of the workforce when they have children but can’t increase their contributions above $25kpa when they return to work – in other words they can’t catch up to those who stay in work – the same applies to students, apprentices, the sick, immigrants. – Self managed is then the way to go as you can get better returns which then helps make up ‘the gap’.

      And that was always one of Muldoon’s objections to Douglas’ compulsory scheme. Women who had not been in the work force were especially disadvantaged. Hence National’s alternative at the 1975 election – Universal National Superannuation. Which they won by a landslide. No matter how good it looks on paper or in hindsight (and yes, the ramifications for the future were set out in the National and Labour manifestos in 1975) Gaynor overlooks the point that it was democracy in action, and policy only works best when it has buy-in from the electorate.
      
      There is a very good reason we are not Singapore – we would never accept the limitations on democracy that made Singapore what it is today.

        There’s very few of them today, or currently they are women with high income husbands or women with several past boyfriends, both being outliers.
        
        I’m an advocate of the kindy/primary/secondary day being 8-4 where women can have and do everything and the teachers union stops hindering personal/business/local/national productivity and social cohesion. For the sake of their families and themselves your average wife doesn’t want to work disruptive daily hours, including the weekend, or have their children educated at disruptive times. I also believe that mothers should have 8 weeks holiday a year instead of the current 26 weeks newborn leave, giving them a week off in each of the school holidays and several over xmas and NY. Female students of all kinds can then get work experience and an income during the holidays. Babies sleep for their first 6 months. All women should rule and have it all – not just a few teachers unionists. A life is better than a career and retirement, just ask any husband. 😎

    The Cullen Fund has earned nothing till its money is back in NZ. The money has gone out but it’s the coming back that really counts. The “market” is almost a casino at present. Value is not priced but what we are seeing is plays on price movement. The worst example is people buying bitcoin because the price has moved upward.
    
    Money invested in productive assets in NZ returns value to the whole country. It can enhance our overall growth rate and compound returns. An
    investment for a fixed yield with a variable reward for growth as the malls do is a good strategy for a long term investor. A fund could own a share in a toll road. It’s not there to buy out the share market. It may help with new ventures or local authority infrastructure projects. The super fund should not lead the economy but be a very important subservient part. Ultimately government has to take responsibility for the overall direction but with fund trusteeship shared with the community all can benefit. The government can never successfully be the prime investor–it does not have the know how or spread. The super fund can never dictate government policy–it’s not elected to do that.

  Muldoon pulled the scheme not because of any anti-socialist meme. NZ had a closed economy and we didn’t have the freedom to have such a fund with its investment hunger at that time.
  Contributions are relentless and those states which directed them into government investment found their budgets burdened with interest costs–Maylasia went up to 55% of the budget!. Pay-as-you-go replaced such plans.
  The more open NZ scheme took control from government and that presented balance of payment problems. Those were the real killer. Even funds invested in local enterprises created exchange pressures. We had oil shocks to absorb and “Think Big” set out to increase foreign earnings or reduce imports. That worked over time. There were also union demands for wage increases that resulted in foreign exchange demands too. When others are forcing imports to the limits how can the government manage overall? We live in a world where others fix prices which means reserves can be critical. It wasn’t until Lange/Douglas floated the NZ dollar did we have more freedom to import or invest offshore.
  It would be easy with a NZ super fund to have it indirectly controlling the economy–it must also be subject to the government.

A controversial track cut into the face of Te Mata Peak in Hawke’s Bay will be removed by the company that built it, Craggy Range Winery.

“Following discussions with Mana Whenua and other concerned groups this week, Craggy Range Winery has decided the best resolution to the concerns surrounding its new walking track on Te Mata Peak’s eastern slopes is to remove the track, restore the land and return it to the previous owner,” the company said in a statement on Saturday.

The new walking and mountain bike track on the eastern face of the peak, on land adjacent to Craggy Range Winery, was deemed to have “no more than minor” environmental effects by Hastings District Council, which issued resource consent in October.

So I was going to give my 14 year old niece some ?for Christmas but I was going to give her a book to read as well. As my sister said she was struggling in English (a constructive summer). What’s an appropriate book for a 14 year girl? Pride & Prejudice, Little Women, Jane Eyre, Emma, Gone With the Wind, etc? (Suggestions please).

  If she is struggling with English, then I would recommend more modern authors who write in simple sentences.
  
  Two authors that my eldest daughter (a great reader) favoured from (9-13 years) were Judy Blume and Gordon Korman.
  
  I haven’t kept up-to-date with new writers for teens..but I would advise against buying anything above her reading ability, until she has got “hooked” on reading.

    Totally agree. The classics are not at all suitable for a struggling reader. Later perhaps. Maybe Malorie Blackman, Hunger Games or YA graphic novels.
    
    Any decent bookshop should be able to recommend what is flying off the shelves.
    
    Our early teen boy was addicted to the Wimpy Kid books. The first book in a series is good, can get them hooked.

So it looks like Uber and Lyft are destroying the San Francisco cabbie system, with the medallions rapidly losing value from their peak of $250,000. Bad Uber, right?

Well, it turns out that the only reason for this insanity is ….. the SF municipal government:

San Fran had been using medallions since the 70s, but only in limited numbers. Prospective cabbies had to wait for years just for a chance to buy one, but the system was at least somewhat stable.

By the late 2000s, however, the city was facing a shortage of cabs and crippling budget shortfalls. That’s when, by their own admission, they saw all the money that New York City was making off this scheme and decided to get in on the action.

There’s an interview with the person who ran the sales:

So the plan was to turn demand for medallions into a money maker for the city. But the high cost of a taxi medallion at $250,000 — the price of a house in a normal real estate market – meant the city needed a lending partner that could issue medallion loans.

Hmmmm – sounds like sub-prime housing. How can you make money selling stuff when people can’t afford it?

So then they needed a lender willing to cover such amounts and, just like New York, they found the San Francisco Federal Credit Union willing to get in on the game, making loans bigger than the price of most homes just so a driver could get the city’s blessing to try to make a living.

And guess who’s going to wear the cost of that as this system goes broke?

But I’ll bet the “free market” will get the blame, especially Uber and Lyft.

  Trump wants to do a deal with the EU – but the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia etc voted against the USA on this.
  
  Oz only abstained because they want Trump to honour the deal to take some refugees, Canada and Mexico because they fear a NAFTA melt-down.
  
  His threat was to not give foreign aid to nations that voted against thee US, well we will wait and see whether he applies it on anyone (and to be consistent on all the nations involved). Empty is a word that comes to mind.

David Letterman and Al Franken were similarly muzzled after their trips to Iraq.

Similarly, the New Zealand comedian Mike King was willingly inveigled into becoming a part of the New Zealand government’s propaganda machinery, travelling to Afghanistan to “entertain the troops” and making a propaganda doco called Postcard from Afghanistan (“I’m just HOPING there’ll be no dramas of the TALIBAN kind!”)

  Seen it and the troops hated him. It was painful to watch. He was praising the Afghans that the Yanks claim they are there to help. In reality they hate their guts and all want to go home.
  
  As an aside I have seen a doco about the Russian experience there. It was dreadful for them too.

Historian – and California native – Victor Hanson, opines on yet more disasters in his state:

Over some 50 consecutive months of drought, California did not start work on a single major reservoir — though many had long ago been planned and designed. Instead, given the lack of water-storage capacity, and due to environmental diversions, tens of millions of acre-feet of precious runoff water last year were simply let out to the ocean. This year, the state may want all of that water back.

The dams, lakes and canals, along with almost all other infrastructure in the state, were built for a population of some 20 millions in the 1960’s, rather than the 40 million now using it all. Plans were made to build more for such growth but were stopped in the 1970’s, ironically in many cases by the guy who is once again Governor, Jerry Brown.

Silicon Valley is the state’s signature cash cow, emblematic of progressive-cool culture and tech savvy. Yet many streets around high-tech corporate campuses are lined with parked Winnebagos that serve as worker housing compounds. In nearby Redwood City, World War II–era cottages have become virtual hostels. Trailers, tiny garages, and converted patios serve as quasi-apartments.

The coastal corridor cannot sustain the 30 million or so residents who cluster there without massive water transfers, excellent freeways, and daily rail and truck importation of food, fuel, and construction materials.

The hillsides are overgrown with drought-stricken scrub and half-dead trees, in part due to restrictions on grazing, brush removal, and logging. They prove to be veritable kindling that fuels raging fires.

Coastal California is hilly, difficult to build on, and prone to devastating earthquakes. It is semi-arid, without much of an aquifer. The life-giving watershed of the Sierra Nevada is more than 200 miles away.

Greens everywhere often talk of unsustainable human activities and how we should let nature reclaim her patches. Perhaps it’s just time Californians come to that party, live up to their principles and beliefs, and abandon what was always basically a desert. 🙂

        Christmas isn’t Christmas without a tree. Those of us who observe the Christian holiday often spend their hard-earned cash setting one up, decorating it with ornaments and piling presents at its base every year.
        
        But not all trees are created equal.
        
        A handful of people have gone above and beyond in 2017 to bend the limits of creativity and, at times, part with tradition.
        
        Red is a fitting colour scheme for this makeshift tree, oozing with rustic charm. ABC listener Suzanne Tucker said the wood she used to build it was nicked from her slaughter shed. It’s a macabre start to life for a cheery Christmas tree but a great way to repurpose old wood that would have otherwise gone to waste.

      Nostradamus, there are many reasons why I think David Benson-Pope should be trenchantly criticized: as mentioned in Ian Wishart’s otherwise highly misleading and shamelessly partisan attack piece, Benson-Pope was close to Helen Clark.
      
      What Wishart does not mention, because he no doubt approved of it, is that Benson-Pope in his role as a government goon was one of the loudest and cruelest persecutors of the refugee Algerian member of parliament Ahmed Zaoui. During speeches in parliament whenever Mr Zaoui’s name was mentioned, Benson-Pope, along with a couple of other South Island louts (Damien O’Connor and Clayton Cosgrove) routinely bawled out: “Send ‘im HOME!”
      
      For that alone, I would condemn Benson-Pope. But Wishart’s article is a load of fanciful nonsense, full of anonymous allegations, and clearly crafted by the National Party’s attack machine, including that useless corpulent thing that happens to be the son of a former president of the Nasty Party.
      
      Just as the hapless Democrats in the U.S. have declined to seriously contest Trump on the substantial issues and instead have put all their energy into the absurd fantasy of the “Russia inquiry”, so the National Party attack on Benson-Pope was almost entirely fanciful.
      
      And it wasn’t a good idea to have Judith Collins, of all people, holding up a tennis ball in Parliament and smirking maliciously at Benson-Pope. Any idea that the attacks on DBP had any validity went out the window at that farcical moment.

      She’s a bit of a pop historian, active in TV, with a fairly widely read blog, and active on Twitter. Must be rough on Mary, as a feminist, spending so much time studying the masculine world of Rome. Ten thousand two hundred and four comments.

In just over ten years.

That’s about three comments per day, although I’ve taken month’s long breaks at various times. And there were probably several hundred comments before that, back to 2003 under a pseudonym.

And here’s the first comment I made in 2007 under the then new registration system, and it’s about DPF’s shocked discovery that racism is not such until it’s connected with the power to oppress. I find myself as amused now as I was then at the naivety of someone expected to be anything but naive.

But while the notion has been cleverly broadened far beyond racism the real impact has come from its being welded to the thinking of the modern political left. After all, they represent all the powerless and oppressed of this world do they not?

It enables any Left-wing movement to justify almost action to gain the power of the state and hold on to it, for even after holding such power for years or even decades they can still claim that they are powerless, at the mercy of mysterious, hidden forces in society that can be countered in no other way.

Hate is Love. War is Peace.

Pah, crude! Power is Powerlessness is infinitely more subtle and brilliant.

Sadly, little has changed on these fronts except to get worse. Little did I know that I was describing Identity Politics and Intersectionality, which are even crazier. It often feels like the same fights just never end, but if Maggie regarded that as normal and gloried in such combat, why shouldn’t I?

Still, I’m wary of entering the Pete George/mikenmild world with 30,000 or so comments (watch it Manolo 🙂 ) and I can’t see the point of attacking Green-Labour for three years, in the way Helen & Co. were attacked here, only to get John Key II in 2020/23 or 26 as part of the daily soap opera. So perhaps it’s time to become a contributor to KB in a different way? As the MSM continues to collapse it’s going to become more important than ever to get alternative arguments in front of people. The worry I personally have is that I’m losing whatever goodwill I had about my ideological opponents, not to mention increasingly entertaining the thought that the MSM is not just stupid and ignorant but is deliberately lying in many cases: thinking such things is not healthy for debate.

Still, as that great philosopher Hans Gruber said in one of the greatest ever Xmas movies, “It’s Christmas, Theo. It’s the time of miracles, so be of good cheer.”.

And on that note, the tree is up, as well as the lights – with our place looking its Chicago best (minus the snow) – though as I look around the ‘hood it’s more like seeing South Korea & North Korea from orbit! So it’s time to once again hit the hammock, the cold beers and the books. Not as much reading as last year; I’ve almost emptied the front window seat space that was piled high – but the final stretch of Foote’s The Civil War remains, plus Hamilton and Democracy in NZ (some 1905 French piece) will have to suffice, together with whatever I get for Christmas. And lets hope Caro doesn’t drop dead before finishing Volume V of his LBJ biography. Even knowing the catastrophe to come it’s going to be a great read.

Thanks once again to those commentators who have truly engaged – Ed Snack, Maggy Wassilieff, Phil Best, Kimbo, Lucia (after allowing for mild TDS 🙂 ), Dime, AOR, Nasska, Calendar Girl, Pharmachick, Waikatogirl, Nostradamus, F E Smith and others like them. The ladies should be especially noted considering the shit some of them have to put up with here! We should be bloody thankful to have the likes of them here getting stuck in rather than the usual safe-space-seeking, micro-aggression triggered snowflakes one encounters on other blogs. Also special thanks to Kimbo for not allowing me to be an entirely lone voice on baseball here in the last two years, despite employing an outrageous and cruel thousand-cuts torture strategy on me throughout 2016 as the Cubs chased their dream.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, New Year, and 2018.

Evolution has a basic problem. It has no starting point. When you nail an evolutionist down, they usually resort to the “seed of life” came from somewhere else in the universe. Franco was a very complex man, a very hard fighter and a dictator like many other European leaders History will eventually judge him properly if written by honest historians without an ideological ax to grind.Otherwise, they have to acknowledge a “creator of the universe”, and, since that creator seems indistinguishable from God, they don’t want to do that. Making their problem even harder is the fact that their favorite theory of the physical universe has a beginning!That was not the context I was thinking of. Not to mention that free-market considerations could keep it from becoming a boondoggle anyway.One of the real things that shows that Evolutionists don’t believe in evolution is that they support preserving “endangered species”. And now the highway is open, although most of it is dirt. Some parts are just a single-lane road measuring just about six feet in width. But hey the extinction of an under-performing species in favor of a more adapted species would be desirable and would give them a chance to finally demonstrate the holy grail of evolution: a new species actually appearing by evolution from a preceding species.
