Random question for the day: All Jews are entitled to live in Israel and gain citizenship. The Australian constitution forbids anyone “entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or citizen of a foreign power” from being a member of parliament. Does that mean Jews cannot be Australian MPs? If so, that would be deeply concerning and a good reason for repeal.

      I think it a serious question and we need to be sure where peoples real loyalty lies. Especially MPs.
      Remember that member of the NZ jewish council who bolted to Israel when we arrested those Israeli spys. Clearly split loyalty and activity from him.
      MPs must be required to be loyal to New Zealand and nowhere else.

    stepieboy. That is not what the Australian constitution says. If your understanding were correct, then there wouldn’t be a dual citizenship crisis. It forbids being a subject or citizen of a “foreign power” or being entitled to the rights thereof. Interestingly, it does not require MPs to be Australian citizens!

    pervieboy just doesn’t learn, This latest own goal, nothing more than rude and uncalled for attempt to assert some sort of intellectual high ground before the inevitable occurs, appears to be symptomatic of a progressive disintegration of pervieboy over the last two or three years. I can’t recall if this concides with Maggy’s appearance, but he has most certainly completely lost it in that direction – resorting not just to stalking her but frequent abuse for no apparent reason other than being routinely bested by her with rational argument. It may be my imagination, but the rate of his progressive unravelling appears to have further increased in the wake of his remarkable confession to being a shopping mall perv at pubescent girls – a borderline kiddy fiddler in fact.
    
    We all, no doubt, have our views about which contributors are idiots, and we each may suffer such impressions in the minds of others however, we all continue on in the knowledge this this is part of the sandpit in which we play. However, I must confess that to me, this place just seems a little unsavoury now that we have a borderline kiddy-fiddler prowling about, irrespective of the fact that he’s an ignorant idiot.

  So if the law does mean that, and well, it does, that would be a good thing, and a reason to keep in place, not repeal it.

  So tell you lawyer friend that the laws won’t be repealed.
  
  If they want refugees, they can use their very considerable money, put together trust funds, and create private refugee outreach initiatives and house them, clothe them, and feed them, in their own communities.
  
  The Australian tax-payer and communities are not a salve and a foil for 0.4% of the Australian populations ideas about the world and self-concepts.

    Yesterday in response to WoO I mentioned that Germany was facing reality and was abandoning it’s Paris agreed emission reduction targets. He reckoned I was wrong and reading the wrong sites. Well it was via Reuters who were reporting on the coalition talks still ongoing in Germany.
    In response WoO said renewables were so successful people were being paid to use more electricity !! ( BS. I’m sure the Germans know about reducing prices).
    But this is the reality , what’s actually happening in Germany . When you are desperate for coal they will do anything.

      What level of proof is needed? I know from all internet discussions that there is a tragic adherence to a position previously held in the face of all evidence. This has a few causes, but the paradigm seems concrete.
      I am not a climate scientist, and have no need to be to weigh the opposing arguments. I happen to think NZ is the best place in the world to benefit from global warming, but the science is bleakly stright forward, despite prize jerks like Leighton Smith playing guru in the mountain cave.

  I have never liked Trump, but I’m beginning to see that he is actually achieving some worthwhile things – and this article by HDPA paints the other side of the picture pretty well.
  
  Many of the things that Trump stands for are valid and well overdue….. its just a pity that the man is such a vile human being. But hey, them’s the breaks I guess. 😀

    Probably, at least one parent. If a US couple living in NZ have a child, then they can apply for its US passport and Social Security # without ever setting foot in the USA (but they would have to visit the US consulate in Auckland, I think). And if one is ex-pat US and the other an ex-pat Australian, say, they could get the child passports for both without ever leaving NZ. Such arrangements aren’t that unusual.

    Easy. If both parents are New Zealand citizens but reside overseas, you register your child as a New Zealand citizen when they are born. eg if you are a kiwi and posted to Dubai for work, and you are pregnant, your child does not miss out on being a New Zealander just because you gave birth in Dubai.

      I understand that there are three ways to become a New Zealander:
      a. By birth
      b. By descent (non-inheritable)
      c. By grant (decree)
      
      If you were born overseas and at least 1 of your parents is a New Zealand citizen by birth or grant, you can register as an NZ citizen by descent and get an NZ passport.
      If you were born overseas and at least 1 of your parents is a New Zealand citizen by birth or grant, you are an NZ citizen by descent.
      
      This means that if two New Zealanders by descent have a child in a country outside NZ that does not automatically give citizenship to those born within its borders (such as Japan or Germany) the child would legally be stateless. The child can not gain a NZ passport because citizenship by descent is a 2nd-class of citizenship in that it cannot be passed on to one’s children.

  It is naive to expect Australia to only deport “some” bad egg New Zealanders based on whether they have “ties” to New Zealand.
  
  The thing about citizenship is that it is “indivisible”. New Zealand (and no OECD countries) have ‘second class’ citizenship. That means that if you ARE a citizen we always have to take you in. No matter what you have done. If you are NOT a citizen we don’t and we can send you home to the country stamped on your passport.

      The last thing that we need the UN involved with is migration. If NZ (or any other ‘attractive’ country) loses its absolute right to decide who enters the country – or who is denied entry – that’s the end of the relevant country’s ability to determine the make-up of its own population.
      
      What other UN involvements in our domestic laws and policies? The UN to determine NZ’s taxation policy? Or the standard language to be used in its legislature and Courts? (Personally, I wouldn’t trust the UN with determining the days on which race meetings could be held!)

  There is nothing wrong with South Auckland although I concur that there are parts of it that are a slum and there a a lot of scummy people making that place into a slum.
  
  The point is, the inhabitants chose to make it into a slum, all those houses were bright and new x years ago and the inhabitants have turned them into shit-holes through neglect and lack of personal responsibility.

    From what I’ve seen of South Auckland there are are no areas that could be described as slums.
    Bangkok has slums all over the place. Some are downright pitiful and might spring up temporarily in a piece of vacant land that will one day be a new shopping mall or whatever. Others such as Khlong Toei are permanent communities that may look like shitholes to us, but to the residents are home where nobody is neglected.

I resist applying clinical diagnoses to people, and that includes Donald Trump. I’m not a doctor, and a proper diagnosis would require a personal evaluation.

But I would be basking in false virtue if I simply pretended that I’m not aware that some of the behaviors displayed by this man line up with the symptoms of certain personality disorders.

So I must couch my concerns this way: There is no way for me to know for sure, but all indications lead me to believe that Donald Trump struggles to fit into the frame of what we call normal behavior, and he often fails at it in spectacular ways.

And it is not only you and I worried about the president’s mental stability. According to Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury,” the book that has so gotten under the president’s skin and into his mind, those closest to him also worry about his mental health. .

Trump was so bothered by the book that he took to Twitter over the weekend to defend himself against the damaging portrait it contains: that of a mentally unstable simpleton…”

The Fusion GPS guy said that they didn’t dare take it into a full accusation of Trump because it would probably rebound very badly on the Clinton’s, so they didn’t do any more.

    NK doesn’t yet have the confirmed capacity to reach the US mainland, and their targeting is suspect so both Hawaii and Guam might be tricky targets. Japan might be easier.
    
    Their real threat is a short term one to Seoul and the surrounds, with conventional artillery. Short term because if they unleashed it much of their artillery would not last very long, but they do pose a earl threat to parts of South Korea. Rest of the world, not much….yet.

Interesting that diesel submarines tend to stay with lead batteries because of their ability to withstand rough handling, and their cheapness. The average life of a sub battery is 6 years. I did not realise that lithium batteries, used in many electric cars, can explode if roughly handled or pierced. As a result, they are rarely used in subs.

    No they do not. Petrol only explodes when mixed into an air/vapour mixture. They both need to be mixed with oxygen to react.
    
    LiPo batteries will “burn” without oxygen because all the stuff they need for the reaction is in the battery itself.
    
    Same deal with explosives. Gun powder etc do not need oxygen to burn.
    
    The context is submarines. Weight does not matter on a sub. If you make the battery lighter then you’re just going to need more ballast.

      The batch is on a remote island, with no mains supply. The $18K solar is the alternative to the cost of petrol for a noisy generator, so the solar affords us constant electricity (as opposed to a few hours in the mornings/evenings with the generator) and peace and quiet.
      
      Still if there was mains supply I think it might work out cost-effective. The life expectancy of the panels is 30 years and the batteries 20.

      The components worked out at about $13K, roughly:
      
      $7,500 – 8x Lead-Carbon batteries.
      $3,200 – 6x PERC Mono panels.
      $2,000 – Inverter.
      $500 – Sundries.
      $300 – Battery monitor.
      
      Our additional costs were mostly build, travel and freight costs. Erecting a free-standing frame to mount the panels, trenching to run cables, and so on.
      
      The most important cost though -not least for insurance purposes- was retaining the services of a certified installer.
