        I cant bring myself to buy anything Asian, I just prefer the fit, build and engines of Euros. Well, until now. Lexus GF 350 Sport, 3.5L, to replace my aging (15 years old) daily which goes to #1 son in his last year at home.

      Truthfully, I’m going out tonight to the pub to score…..first time in 15yrs!
      Mrs passed away last august after long illness over several years….housebound all that time….hence why ex-patriot spends time discussing homecountry’s politics daily, for several years! Thanks for everything everyone over the years.
      No comments please…thoughts are appreciated as you would all have them…..didn’t know how to thank you all but you deserved to all be thanked. That’ll do.
      I’ll be around at KB but not to often from now……knowing myself….she’s going to be hot! 😎

        Something we share. The mother of my children passed in early 2016, after a short brutal run in with cancer. the 12 months that followed were the toughest Id ever been through. The kids and I helped each other through, and the bond we have now is beyond compare.
        
        Id made the decision, in my mid 50’s, not to bother dating any more, couldnt be arsed with gold diggers, fakes and ‘the scene’. And about 4 months ago an old work colleague got in touch to ask for a reference. We met up over coffee, I asked her out 2 months later, and weve been inseparable ever since. She is the most kind, loving, spirited and intelligent girl Ive ever met, and we make each other incredibly happy.
        
        Life can be a right trial sometimes. But then life gave me The Blond. Ill forever be grateful.
        
        Good luck and go well.

        I’m really just going out with the boys for beers…..and an intent to poke fun at and amuse a more respectable woman…..I’ve of course had the future in mind given it was a long illness, emotionally I’m good as…..I’m ignoring the ordinarily average women. 😎

        ROL, TDM, thanks. Yeah, their Mum did a great job. By her own admission, she wasnt the best wife, but that I forgave her for and she knew that before she died.
        
        As for the downtickers, I figure its castoffs from life, the intransigent labour voters on the alt-left who try and find some glory in the misery and suffering of others, and hate seeing people succeed despite what life throws. Frankly I feel nothing but pity for them. Ive been through some tough shit, thats for sure. But Im still alive, and I feel nothing but love for life and those around me.
        
        And just now, as the kids and I left The Blonds house, she said something that made me smile. Thank you for loving me in the way I need to be loved.
        
        Sun came out, beers were had, kids swam, BBQ. And tomorrow FFD. And who knows, maybe Harriet got some!!

      According to Shane Jones on TV3 this morning, there are already 50m trees planted. That’s right, he’s including pine plantations already planted in years past! Shane’s officials are acquiring land as he doesn’t have the funds to purchase land so Shane is looking at planting on the DOC estate. Getting prisoners to raise seedlings and plant. As well as pine, manuka and other natives are to be included in the number planted.
      
      Awaiting actual planting to start. Plenty of Shane bluster and “gunna-do this and that”. ?

    They have played some really good cricket this summer with Pakistan much better opposition than the Windies. England will be a stern challenge (good ODI team) but for me the Aussies in a few weeks will the best gague (as they always are).
    Interesting hearing the Pakistan coach saying that he thinks this NZ team is a very good team and probably the best he’s seen.

    The Black Caps are playing very good cricket. But best of all, when they get their foot on the opponents’ throat, there’s not letting off. That hasn’t always been the case with our cricketers. There’s a sort of ruthless efficiency with the current team, and I am impressed.

Fact/Rant: The Mori Ori had settled in New Zealand around the same time that Maori under Kupe arrived and the Maori committed a genocide comparable to the Jewish holocaust against them. Rape, Murder, Cannibalism, Slavery and Genocide were all practiced against the Mori Ori people. Polite society ignores this past preferring instead to lecture European New Zealanders about colonialism and how you must pay for past grievances committed against the Maori people. Think about that the next time some “White Left” Metropolitan like Susan Devoy or Kim Hill gives you a lecture on race relations and being a “White Male” because they certainly don’t mind discriminating against you or the Mori Ori people thats for sure.
IIRC as matter of fact the Crown (that’s the rest of us white mystery meats) had to pay compensation for the Maoris Genocide of the Mori Ori people which makes us the Maoris slaves. Cheers for that Chris Finlayson i hope you turn bald.

  In this parallel world, there would be compulsory Ainu language lessons in Japanese state schools. Modern Ainu words (created by a committee in Tokyo) would feature prominently above the Japanese names on government buildings and websites. There would be a separate electoral role for Japanese of Ainu decent; scholarships for the same.

    Most historical revisionism of indigenous peoples is coming from Gulf States exerting their soft power through the UN. Al Jazeera pushes that particular narrative in Africa and here in Australasia (plenty of white looking Maori working for them) i wonder what they would make of being an Indigenous European though hahaha or the fact that MENA has been colonised by Arabs.

      Is it a good thing for every ancient tribe (the Celts, the Cornish, the Picts, the Scots, the Welsh) all to push for their own language revival and separatism?
      What happens to national integrity?

        The best thing to happen to the Brits was colonisation by the Romans in particular. That kicked off the two thousand or so year transition into what Britain became.
        
        The British colonisation of other parts of the world exported the best of that.
        
        Many other colonisations did not go so well. The Arabian colonisation of Africa was pretty ugly. Very little effort in helping the people and heavy-duty slavery that continues today.

My alarm goes off at 6am. The news comes on and I can safely predict the lead item will be the same as the front page of the Horrid. Today we have the cost of childrens education, apparently a fortune according to the Australian Scholarship Group (who ever they may be). I suppose I could look at stuffed instead where doom and gloom weather “events” are the main source today’s drama. We desperately need a new independent news outlet in this country.

    My parents in the late 1940’s, in UK, father a senior seaman in the war and my mother in service decided that they would do all they could to give their three children the best education that they could afford. They worked very hard all hours to do this for which we have never forgotten with love.
    My children here have had the same private school opportunity and have achieved all that we wished for them, and their children, now finished, have had the same opportunity and wonderful result. The sooner New Zealand wakes up to the best for the country is education, and stopped farting around with Teachers Unions
    continually lowering to their standards.
    Why do so many families still continue to pay for an alternative education – this Government will do all it can to get rid of private schools – but they will have a fight from those who see a different value in private education.

The cost of a private education has risen to $360,000 over the course of a child’s education. The GST amounts to $54,000 which I believe is higher than the Government subsidy provided to private schools. And yes ztev before you leap into the fray I am aware that the subsidy was frozen in 2009 by the evil John Key which does in a way prove his egalitarianism. Are private schools therefore a cash cow for the Government?

Part of my browsing routine is to check the headlines on stuff, the BBC, Fox News and the Uk Guardian amongst others. Stuff is dominated by trivia, whereas the others tend to be focused on more serious issues. (I don’t bother with the Herald or any other NZ paper, and I don’t watch any TV).   War on drugs is pointless, creating crime to finance users and enabling gangs.
  Legalise it all and create cheap dispensaries, but require drugs be used only at dispenseries (death penalty for possession and use elsewhere), and Drug users should not have access to free medical treatment for any health problems it causes.

Academic says te reo ‘on life support’, Bill English says it’s not up to government to save ‘someone else’s language’ – stuff

Before throwing more funding at this, as NZF/Labour/Green coalition is likely to do, I challenge anyone who is a genius with Google to find what the annual total is for funding te reo Maori.

I believe from an earlier source, that I cannot now find, funding is is in excess of $200 million a year, including tv channels, radio and other media.

  Real Maori is used on the Marae and is hidden because it contain cultural treasures. This will not be imparted to those without cultural standing. I have met this elsewhere in the Pacific.

They have been completely kitted out since well before Christmas yet remain stubbornly empty despite the housing ‘crisis’. Where are all those people sleeping in cars? The latest development is the placement of garden waste bins so presumably the taxpayer picks up the tab for a garden waste collection every month or so.

There are also two two empty one acre blocks of land near our shopping centre that had Housing NZ homes removed and are now awaiting multi apartment development. The sections have been empty for the last 100 days Phil so where are the tradies? Not so easy delivering as making rash promises is it comrade? Oh, you know the sections are there because the taxpayer is paying to keep the weeds down.

    Part of the issue with a new site is money is allocated by financial years, so they could be working on consents but a new contract cant start till the new financial year.

      The hell they can. I am the least maternal person I know and once my daughter was born all I wanted to do was be with her, this feeling didn’t change when I went back to work 7 months later, hence why I now work from home.
      She is talking about 6 weeks off and Clarke being a stay at home Dad, well if this is your choice why the hell have a kid. We know what it is like when your father is PM, well a mothers relationship with the kids is totally different how hard will it be on them if she is PM??

        True CHFR1 but it also multiplies the problems facing the country as a result of the COL.
        The Deputy party leader who found that roll “very stressful” is now the anointed PM. Now it seems she has been operating all this time with an artificially induced pregnancy that she has to keep intact for another 6 months. Added to which she is at the outer edges of passing through her productive stage of life. Some say she has never been productive in the other means of the term and now likely less so.
        It is noted the delay of 3 months to release this news while many expected it helped explain he flakiness seen so far which we can expect to increase as she increases to expect. In her case it might be a more nervous time to wait to be “sure” so to speak.
        Many happy parents have battled setbacks and heartbreaking moments to achieve their planned family while savouring the good times. Likewise they also know there is nothing easy about it.       Depends on how you’re planning to do it. One of my staff was back at work 2 weeks later. She didn’t really like babies, her husband looked after her. Others, 9 months. I would have thought Jacinda was at the 9 month end, but it’s always hard to predict.

If this were an employment situation, would they take a dim view of someone new into a job and then immediately away on leave, at least without giving some prior notice that those were your plans/situation?
If you are a small employer, even more so because you can’t afford the staff cover, and the whole point of hiring in the first place is presumably because there is work that needs doing.

  Pregnancy is not an illness. It’s a natural process and if she can’t stand the heat in the kitchen from the Opposition pregnant or not then she’ll crack. Giving birth is even harder and more painful btw. Pregnancy did not stop me from doing my bit in the bloody cowshed! I didn’t expect to be treated like a princess. That is not to say the PM will be unable to get on with the job of being PM. It will be all the lefty lovelies who will be howling the loudest if they perceive the PM to not be treated as precious cargo me thinks. So my advice to the PM will be to ‘harden up cupcake’ and show us what you’re made of. I certainly hardened up and never used my pregnant state to score special privileges….

    As an employer who has employed lots of ladies over many years I find that I can usually pick that they are pregnant before they figure it themselves. ( Had a bunch of sisters as well.)
    I suspect that around Parliament there would be a few like myself who sniffed the breeze way back.
    seems morning sickness was about just after election time. A dead giveaway to anyone waiting to each afternoon to negotiate an agreement.
    
    Times will get tough for her,especially once she has the baby and maternal instincts kick in. Toughing out the daily grind with Peters, Robertson and Little with the inevitable back stabbing and attempts to be the new leader will take its toll.

I can’t help thinking that Jacinda was thinking that Labour wouldn’t be in government. She then could have announced her pregnancy after the election and disappeared for the duration of her parental leave.

  No everyone here thinks it will be good for her and might help her grow up a bit. Hopefully. There must be a pay-off to the NZ Media becoming Ardern’s personal photo album.
  
  But it is pretty funny that Winston Peters is going to be Prime Minister for the span of Ardern’s maternal leave.
  
  It’s also funny in a dark way that Ardern will be un-touchable for at least 6-9 months as they go about dismantling NZ.
  
  But whilst she is un-touchable, it will mean the blow torch gets applied entirely to her team, particularly Winston and Grant.
  
  Whilst she is taking care of her kid, those two will have much more responsibility and work load lol. I can’t think of two people better suited for it.

Now, she has taken on leadership of our country, meanwhile she knew all the time she was not going to be able to fulfill the obligations & responsibilities that she was asking voters to trust her with. Meanwhile, during the election campaign Mark Richardson got bollocked for even daring to ask her about pregnancy. So, the hypocrisy is with all her & her support base.     We all know Ardern was slippery from Day #1. I, personally, don’t believe a word she says. Got help it if Mark Richardson enquires after the pregnancy, but Hayley and Hilary on TV One will be able to ask a thousand and one questions. Thanks is to be given, also, to Toni Street for stepping down from Seven Sharp. Her gushing and giggling about the pregnancy every bloody night until d-day would’ve been nauseating. I’m thankful for small mercies……

The Prime Minister should set a good pro-family example by resigning from her position to become a stay-at-home mother (until the child starts primary school at the age of 5).

Motherhood has been undervalued in the modern word since the 1960s, and who knows what social harm this has done.

Well firstly congratulations to Jacinda and Clarke, having a baby is probably the most precious thing in one’s life and they will be wonderful parents. Well done!

But in terms of the optics of politics – WTF – who on earth would go into an election, riding high in the polls and assured of victory, then deliberately getting pregnant? Becoming the PM is not a part-time role or to be treated as a plaything depending on how one feelz?

No I’m not being nasty, Jacinda has said publicly that she is anxious under pressure, does not want the top job, does not want all that responsibility.

In fact it’s Labour that put her there, so in many respects this is not actually her fault!

Frankly Labour can’t be trusted (especially after promoting an inexperienced and pretend or interim PM, who didn’t want the role). She says she’ll step down for only 6 weeks then resume the PM role (after handing it to Winston)? I call no-way on that, she’ll understandably want a lot more time off with baby and who could blame her for that? It’s the best thing one can have as a parent – a lot of time bonding with baby (everything else is just noise and unnecessary pressure), and if she does then good for her!

Screw Labour (and Winston) though for using and abusing her, what rotten scheming desperate pricks!

Good grief, the COL circus sideshow continues …. what next? Winston as PM …. more popcorn times ahead!

Well any-one with lingering regrets on National has another confirmation Winston was never going with us. He knew Ardern was pregnant, and accordingly he would have a de facto PM role for at least one year. I’m not sure that’s what people voted for, but its what we’re getting. Pretty hard for Bill to compete with that.

Honestly, I wonder if there is a clause in the secret coalition agreement the media has memory-holed that actually says something like ‘in the event that the PM becomes incapacitated due to personal events for a period’…

Sometimes pregnancy can have a profound effect on someone’s neural configurations. There is a tiny chance that Ardern might become less of a communist during this time. That would be lovely.

My view is this, If we are to go by looks to choose a Prime Minister, the Robert Muldoon would not have made it, but he turned out ok, maybe the best socialist PM ever.

  I agree that politicians should be judged first and foremost on their actions, not on their looks or their platitudinous speeches. That’s why I didn’t wet my pants with excitement when, say, Andrew Little made his 2017 state of the nation speech. Having said that, I think it’s human nature – consciously or subconsciously – to judge people by their looks. And for politicians in a 24-hour news cycle, that’s a tough reality.

      Politicians live in a transparent fishbowl. Sportspeople (competing at the top level) likewise have to come to terms with armchair critics on social media. I’ve read plenty of disparaging comments on Cricinfo.
      
      I think Jacinda is, at this stage, unproven. But there are signs that she lacks political judgement and experience – such as knowing when to have private conversations instead of lecturing overseas politicians publicly.
