Keeping Stock

So the first cracks are appearing in the MoU between Labour and the Greens; oh dear:

Labour and the Greens say they have dropped plans to cut electoral “deals” in closely-fought electorates at this year’s general election.

The two parties had planned to discuss strategic campaigning in marginal seats as part of their agreement to work together until the election.

Such a move would have been critical in electorates such as Auckland Central, where National’s Nikki Kaye beat Labour’s Jacinda Ardern by just 600 votes in 2014 while the Green candidate took 2000 votes.

It may have also had an impact in the Maori seats, given the Maori Party and Mana Movement have agreed to step aside in at least two electorates this year to give the other party a clear run.

Not only will Mana leader Hone Harawira face no opposition from a Maori Party candidate in Te Tai Tokerau this year, the Greens will run a candidate there for the first time, creating another possible hurdle for Labour’s incumbent MP Kelvin Davis.

National could also continue its policy of directing its supporters to vote for United Future’s Peter Dunne in Ohariu and the Act candidate in Epsom, while encouraging them to give their party vote to National.

Labour leader Andrew Little said that following discussions between the parties, both Labour and Greens had decided they would back themselves “with our own electoral commitments”.

They had various reasons for running their own candidates in all the electorates, he said. The Greens did it to campaign for the party vote, and Labour always planned to compete in every electorate because it was one of the two big political parties, he said.

The polls would beg to differ with Mr Little. When Labour is polling in the mid-20’s, it’s a bit rich for Little to claim his party as “one of the two big political parties”.

  I attended the joint Labour-Green state of the Nation launch yesterday in Mt Albert and it was impressive. It was a very comfortable event. There were many, many Auckland Labour activists in attendance. And there were many, many Green activists as well. I have spent a fair bit of time campaigning with both and to have them all in the same room at the same time was a very enjoyable experience.

    That is the only really sensible outcome for the two parties. Can one possibly imagine Grant Robertson stepping aside to give James Shaw a clear run? This despite Grant being utterly dependent on Green voters to win the seat, but he knows the Green voters will vote tactically to keep the National candidate out. So if it is not going to happen in Wellington Central that is the end of the idea. Also ‘deals’ of this sort would make them sitting ducks for criticism when they claim National is going easy in Epsom and Ohariu. Labour and Greens realise the importance of having an ambassador in each electroate to campaign for the Party Vote. Some years ago National did not stand a candidate in Wellington Central to give ACT a clear run and while National had a pseudo candidate to campaign for the party vote that person was ‘locked out’ of local ‘meet the candidates’ meeting.
    Interestingly National has not run candidates in the Maori seats for the last 12 years because the number of votes gained (candidate and list) is just not worth the effort.

i know i rant about our media but dam..

stuff yesterday – US Dollar and Stocks TUMBLE over “muslim ban”.

1) its not a muslim ban.
2) Dime sees headline and goes fuck! Dime buys a lot of US dollars for work, so jumps online thinking he’s in for a windfall.. the dollar was just under .73.. tumble?? its higher than it has been in months! and yes, it pulled back .005 or something..
3) checks the dow – down 0.04%. this morning its a touch under the newly achieved 20,000 mark.

headline should have read – dollar & dow normal.

my trust in the media is almost zero at this point.

i trust them (barely) to report sports scores to me.

  They’re in full retard mode. There were no less than 6 Trump hit-pieces running concurrently on stuff yesterday.
  
  No real mention that:
  
  * Those “banned” Muslim countries are not outright bans. They just apply more stringent screening.
  * All the countries were identified under Obama’s watch to be heightened risk. Trump didn’t just go off half cocked.
  
  Banning Muslims or others is clearly not the issue. No outrage when Obama banned immigration from Iraq for 6 months in 2009.
  Nor any when Obama put severe restrictions on people from Venezuela last year.
  
  Nope, the real point is just pure anti-Trump outrage.

        That’s a very narrow view of what happened. It ignores people not being sure of whether they could leave the country and return. Those outside the country not sure whether they could return. American companies advising staff not to leave etc.

  As I write the Dow, S&P500 & Nasdaq are all down 0.9%-1.0% and earlier in the day the Nasdaq was down 1.4%. It’s the biggest down-day since Trump’s election.
  
  The Dow opened 0.5% down and then dropped from there, so not sure where you saw it at 0.04% down.
  
  As far as the markets are concerned they like Trump’s talk about tax & regulatory reform, but so far there’s been no detail of what that will actually look like. In the meantime as Bloomberg is reporting “Investors in general are feeling Trump is a bit reckless”.

      Right now it’s Monday in the US. So anything you checked yesterday would have been Friday’s numbers.
      
      The immigration stuff only kicked off since close of markets on Friday. I’d suggest the falls in Monday’s trading are in large part due to that turmoil.

        Yes, one view is today is a normal market fluctuation. But those fluctuations usually have a trigger and I’d say the immigration stuff is that trigger today. Trump is generating uncertainty and uncertainty brings out emotion.
        
        I run an investment fund investing in US stocks, so I track the US economy and markets closely. All the commentary today is that markets are down on the immigration chaos.

  They were concurrently concerned about the decline in the PISA educational ratings.

I commented on this last night but I’d like to reiterate just how disgusting it was watching the Main Sewer Media with their Knee-jerk reactions immediately blaming U.S. President Donald Trump, the fake #MuslimBan, white nationalists, Islamophobia, racists, etc before they knew who did it. That it was 2 Muslims must be absolutely gutting to them as yet again the public is witness to who the real purveyors of “fake news” are.

Even today, that disgusting excuse for a Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after going all in yesterday with his commitment to flood Canada with the 3rd world, is still spouting off nonsense about this being a terrorist attack against Muslims . More a case of “family violence” I’d say.

        My first thought was that this could be two militant Islamists attacking Muslims who are guilty of being “moderate” and hence apostate. After all, why is by far the greatest proportion of deaths from Muslim terrorism, that of Muslims, in Muslim countries?

  It appears very simple to me – Trump, like it or not, took the US Election in accordance with the Constitution.
  He made it quite clear what his policy was going to be and he is in the process of implementing these policies.
  Some 80,000,000 odd people voted for him and would be pissed off if he did not undertake these policies.
  No different to New Zealand in that respect.
  Should any party in this country not undertake their pre election promises then all hell would let loose, as often tried by the so called media.
  But to Democrats( Socialists) it is different.
  I may not like Trumps short term immigration policy but remember Obama did similar.

      Yes, Europeans are happily making friends, partners and spouses out of Indians, Asians, Middle Easterners, whatever – often second-generation, assimilated ones. Almost nobody has any problem with this.

What a revolutionary idea……!

Trumps new Executive order – for every new regulation that is requested by ‘The Regulators” they have to list two that will be removed.

He must be in contact with the Almighty because no one else has ever thought of that sort of helpful idea – even a guy who said “Yes we can”. (Although I do recall something that Regan said – which was “The most frightening thing a small business owner can hear is ‘Im from the Government and Im here to help you’ )

(Thats been my beef with the PPTA and the NZEI every time the moan about teacher load – they never have suggested that something be removed every time a new requirement is put on teachers)

  Labour 1980s (you know, the one right of National 2016) proposed sunset clauses in legislation but I did not see this acted out.

  I know it has intuitive appeal but it’s actually a terrible idea, and not that revolutionary either – they’ve been doing it in the UK for a while, with no noticeable benefits but a vast increase in bureaucracy and perverse incentives on bureaucrats.
  
  If an existing regulation is creating more costs than benefits, then it ought to be scrapped anyway – without waiting until there is a new regulation with which to replace it.
  
  If it’s creating more benefits than costs, then scrapping it will create more costs than benefits.
  
  If there is a proposal for a new regulation that is expected to deliver more benefits than costs, then we shouldn’t have to wait for those benefits while the department scrabbles around to find a regulation that can be scrapped in its place.
  
  This would only encourage departments to keep rubbish regulations in place, to trade-off when they want to introduce new regulation – rather than looking to reform them as soon as it becomes clear that they’re rubbish.

I actually read the two papers given to the MOU Party conference.
It appears to me that the Union Party are being taken for suckers by Greenpeace.
Simply it implies that all the Greenpeace run Party want to do is take votes of the Union Party.
There are only so many left wing votes – not enough to get into Government but there is the ability to redivide these votes.
That is what Greenpeace Party are doing, and well, by taking votes from the Union Party to increase their seats in Parliament

Unfortunately they have ‘confused’ some of my interview. I should clarify. I have not pushed for an ‘Opt Out’ system. I have said that it should be ‘considered’ if new measures don’t work. Again to clarify my position, I want to see a ‘binding’ organ donor register where people’s wishes to be a donor (or not) are legally upheld. (I.e. families cannot veto your wish) and then if this system does not work maybe a look at the opt out system, (There is no opt out system in the world where the family can not object.)

Back in November 2015 Trump said that he knew more about ISIS than the generals did.

In September 2016 Kellyanne Conway said that she’d heard the Don’s secret plan to defeat ISIS and said that Trump would share specifics in the next televised debate. Which he didn’t do.

Then on Saturday Trump signed a National Security memorandum ordering the generals to come up with a plan to defeat ISIS.

Explain to me what I’m missing here. Shouldn’t Trump be telling the generals his plan? Because he knows more than them right?

Or is the real secret that Trump never had a plan, and that he was just talking out of his a#$e?

Obviously all the puff pieces done on Ms Harre in the MSM and on left-aligned blogs such as Spin-Off have gone down like a cup full of cold sick.

Labour seems to have reached the conclusion we all already knew; Laila Harre is still tainted from her association with the “toxic” Dotcom brand, and will turn voters off.

We have a situation in NZ where we have Labour Leader Andrew Little throwing mud at Bill English by saying he might be Prime Minister but he is not a leader and is weak because he won’t back down to Maori or implement Labours and the media policy and condemn US President Donald Trump. this coming from a Leader that lost the largest numbers of Union Membership from the Union movement in their history, also this Leader the Labour candidate that stood in the safe seat of New Plymouth twice and lost by a massive number of votes. Can you imagine if John Key had raised that he had cancer eight years ago and that had inspired to become the Prime Minister of NZ Labour would have pulled Pete Hodgson out of retirement and teamed him up with his former partner in crime Mike Williams and sent them overseas to dig dirt on John Key having cancer eight years ago. Without trying to play down what families go through with love ones having cancer I am sorry but Andrew Little has played the card of the sympathy vote to try and achieve his dream of becoming the PM of NZ while Bill English has helped NZ come through tough times caused by the World Financial Crisis in which NZ is still prospering from, so that’s what Leaders are made of not people that pump their own chests out.

She said Putin was illegally occupying crimea, invoked the spirit of Reagan and Thatcher in standing up to Russia, stated that Nato was Britains most important treaty and said the Iran nuclear deal was working well. Trump said they got on fantastically well. She has him where she wants him and if he does turn up in the UK he will probably buy back the Brooklyn bridge and give the UK tariff free access to the USA.   People with passports from those countries are not allowed to enter the US, unless they have a diplomatic passport.
  So people with permanent residence (green card holders) who happen to be out of the country at the time, cannot return.

Yesterday I went along to watch our plucky lads confound the Australian cricket wizards at Eden Park.
Apparently there were about thirty thousand people there and if the game had been play at Wellington instead of the Sevens a similar number, would no doubt have turned up.
The sevens was a disaster. In my opinion the reason the day yesterday was such a success was because we had a competitive side with plenty of well known faces and the game is entertaining without being too overly contrived. The All Black sevens team is a bunch of second rate no names that can no longer foot it with the best. The format is contrived with few excitlng games.
That being the case the occasion has relied on the party atmosphere. The novelty has worn off.
Beer at the cricket was nine bucks in a plastic cup. The food is indigestion in a cardboard box.
People go to sporting events over the long term for top class sport.

Whats all the fuss about a million ‘signing’ an online petition to keep Trump from visiting UK. UK has a population of about 65,000,000 and 1,000,000 is just about 1.5%, no different than if 60,000 signed a petition here in NZ as a %age of population, hardly breath taking stuff! If the UK ran an online petition asking anyone to sign if you agree that less reality TV should be on your screens….it would be up to 20 million in a cpl of days.

Trump’s Travel Ban executive order would have put the lives of serviceman overseas at risk, and would at least have required an increase in alert status for their own protection.

So it beggars belief that the SecDef, Gen. James Mattis not only had no input to the policy, but also was only told about this on Friday Morning, only a few orders before it was implemented.

I understand that Gen. Mattis was pissed.

It was Gen. Mattis who said, 6 months ago, in reference to Trump’s proposed Muslim ban, “This kind of thing is causing us great damage right now, and it’s sending shock waves through the international system.”

That this has affected people who worked for the US military would only make his anger worse.

Hardly surprising that an Attorney General would not go along with an executive order they did not think was constitutional.

People in office have a choice to make on these occasions.

When POTUS 43 ordered the FBI Director to spy on Americans illegally he carried out the order. When Congress found out they made it legal after the fact (the alternative was to impeach the President and imprison the pair of them).

The decision Congress made to accept illegal spying on Americans means that any POTUS who promises not to do illegal spying is probably lying (the lie is used to deceive people into thinking they are not being spied on so they can be caught/and or observed).

Banning the populations of certain countries is the way to go as it divides the civil from the uncivil; those who hold ideals of ‘down with the west’. Have relations with the US like NZ, GB, Australia, Canada, Japan and others do, and for holding the sensible views of strong borders and strong laws, and you will be granted more association with western countries. It’s simply about setting a standard of behaviour amongst the international community, just look at the rogues gallery of murderers and thieves at the UN, and how they treat Israel…….and no one else, anywhere, ever. After weeks of speculation former Police Association President Greg O’Connor has confirmed he will be putting his name forward for Labour in Ohariu at the next election .

O’Connor, who was the familiar face of the police union for more than 20 years, was shoulder-tapped for the nomination by Labour leader Andrew Little.

That sets him up as the favourite to win the nod from Labour to take on long term sitting MP and UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne in the Wellington seat.

Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy is calling for police to record hate crime statistics to combat racism.

“This is not something they collect when responding to callouts,” she said in a speech at the Holocaust remembrance service in Wellington this afternoon.
