Data shows the year was also one of the hottest three ever recorded, with scientists warning that the ‘climate tide is rising fast’

[Extract] 2017 was the hottest year since global records began that was not given an additional boost by the natural climate cycle El Niño. The year was still exceptionally hot, being one of the top three ever recorded.

The three main global temperature records show the global surface temperature in 2017 was 1C above levels seen in pre-industrial times, with scientists certain that humanity’s fossil fuel-burning is to blame.

The last three years have been the hottest trio ever seen, with 2017 ranking second or third depending on the small differences between the temperature records. Furthermore, 17 of the 18 hottest years recorded since 1850 have occurred since 2000.

2017 also saw extreme weather events strike across the world, from hurricanes in the US and Caribbean to heatwaves in Australia and devastating floods in Asia. Many of these events have been shown to have been made much more likely by the heat resulting from global warming.

Scientists from across the globe warned that the limit of 1.5C of warming, set as a goal by the international Paris climate change treaty, was being approached very rapidly and that it was more urgent than ever to slash emissions to avoid the worst impacts.

“While climate change deniers continue to bury their heads in the sand, global warming continues unabated,” said Prof Michael Mann, at Pennsylvania State University in the US. “And the impacts of that warming – unprecedented wildfires, superstorms and floods – are now plain for all to see. There has never been greater urgency.”

“Despite our best efforts so far, global warming continues apace,” said Prof Martin Siegert, at Imperial College London. “This is yet another wake-up call to develop a zero carbon economy before it’s too late.”

Prof Stefan Rahmstorf [Potsdam U.] said there had been a very significant increase in global temperature since the major El Niño seen in 1998: “In just 18 years, our greenhouse gas emissions have pushed up global temperature by a full 0.4C. At this rate the Paris goal of 1.5C will already be crossed in under two decades.”

In Australia, the Climate Council chief executive, Amanda McKenzie, said: “The fingerprints of climate change were seen with extreme weather events across Australia in 2017. This data is yet another warning to the government to urgently slash Australia’s rising greenhouse gas levels in a bid to protect Australians from escalating extreme weather events.”

The El Niño event in 2015-16 raised the annual average temperature for 2016 by 0.2C, but most scientists agree that both 2016 and 2015 would have been record hot years even without the El Niño. The 2017 global temperature was accurately predicted by the Met Office a year before, adding to confidence that scientists have a good understanding of the climate system.

  Ive always found it curious as to how the worlds Global Worriers phrase their argument over their decades long campaign. As the data stops agreeing with their story they change the way they tell the story.
  
  The last few years its by saying this year is one of the hottest in history. Obviously thats only for the last 150 years of records. and only using heavily adjusted land and sea records (no satellites), but its the narrative is interesting.
  
  If Usian Bolt breaks the world record, the first response will always be by how much. Why do these Alarmists never tell us by how much this new record year broke the record by. Is it because they are talking about hundredths of a degree? And is the margin of error measured in tenths of a degree. Is this why they never give actual numbers, just keep saying its really hot now pay more tax.

    Why worry about the weather warming when there are huge caldera volcanoes all over the world that could erupt at any time!? The Yellowstone caldera has now been found to have a second lower chamber with enough molten-hot magma to fill The Grand Canyon 11 times. And of course, we have our own caldera volcano in Lake Taupo.
    
    If a caldera volcano erupts the earth will be covered in huge blankets of pumice ash and then acid rain which will start an instant ice-age. Weather will no longer be of interest to anyone on earth – all dead. ?

      Intersting obsevation.
      Some friends of one of my staff were in Hawai when the alert went up. They were on a cruise boat and the warning was out go to your cabins and lock your doors.
      People running around everywhere yelling and screaming and crying etc.
      He said to his wife; well looks like this is it” went to their rooms and waited.
      Then the false alarm was notified.
      
      A sobering experience it seems.

        If they were conversant with North Koreas actual capabilities and not the ‘hype’ put out by the US Intelligence industry, they would be aware that an actual weapon on a missile going that range is beyond North Koreas capability using modified Ukrainian rocket motors.
        The actual maximum distance flown by a NK missile is 1000Km, adding a warhead , or payload in the parlance, reduces the range , not increase it.

        Regrettably ztev the vast majority of the population are not blessed to possess your superior analytical powers and an intimate knowledge of the capabilities of a modified Ukrainian rocket engine.
        
        With five minutes notice most of us (Hawaiians and Japanese included) would adopt a ‘WTF do I do now?’ stance.

        It’s more the media writing it up than the intelligence community. The latest test showcased a missile that, from its flight characteristics, could potentially reach the West Coast of the US with a nuclear payload. The actual intelligence evaluations suggested that NK did not have any of these deployed (it was a test after all) and their ability to put a viable payload on was in doubt; and their targeting prowess was not thought to be great. However given sufficient time they should be able to deploy such missiles giving them the future capacity to directly threaten the US. That is they had developed technology with that potential.
        
        The media of course wrote that up as it being an immediate threat.

        We hear the same hype here about ‘potential tsunamis’ from around the pacific rim.
        Yet each time they are mere ripples in the scheme of things. A local earthquake like kaikoura or in our immediate coastal area is the real threat, but of course warnings are superflous and not going to give enough time.
        
        Getting this sort of information from ‘news’ is absurd as of course ‘news’ is a retail product like soap and effects are always overblown.
        
        The simple fact is no country uses ‘mobile’ liquid fuelled rockets for inter continental range for very good reasons, they are too fragile to be moved in this way. The shell of the missile has to be very light and liquid fuel is more efficient in ‘missile talk’, but those will be silo based.
        NK cant risk a fixed location as the US will target them.
        These details were covered by fairfax but ‘scary news’ gets more prominence ( along with news about babies!)

        Interesting that NASA are attempting to work out how to cool magna before it erupts from the volcano. So sorry cmm, you are wrong, there are huge amounts of tax money to be spent on volcano research…?

    It was Ivar Giaever (or William Happer) that pointed out how most temperature gauges are stationed in the northern hemisphere near large cities, which cannot give an accurate average global temperature. He claims that sea data has been added in to average figures of recent and it has distorted everything.

        Great link Maggy, this is proper science, just neutral data. It shows that recent years might have been warmer, just like the 1930s, the late-C19th & early C20th was the coldest period probably over the last 2000 years. But notice the last year, one of the coldest on record.

        I tried to get past “notrickszone” to find more about this and the person who conducted the “study” but with little success. The link to the researcher led to a amateur website written in German, and I had no success at the University of Augsburg site. So, no luck, but maybe I didn’t look in the right places.
        
        However… Quite some time ago, you posted a link to a notrickszone page covered with graphs that refute global warming. I bothered to look up a couple of the original articles at the time, and I then commented that I couldn’t see how the articles I had read addressed global warming at all. You either didn’t see or chose to ignore my comment.
        
        In my travels today, I happened upon a site that commented on your notrickszone page of graphs. They had contacted many of the authors of the original papers. Like me, many of them also can’t see how their data can be used this way.

      Scientific papers when published go into the public domain.
      The authors may not like the interpretation others place on their research findings, but that’s not the issue.
      
      It’s their research data/findings/observations that are of interest to other scientists.
      
      Kenneth Richard is regularly publishing a list of climate science papers on the NoTricks site that show past and present climates . He highlights parts of or entire papers that indicate that there is much more to Earth’s climate than the simple”settled science” story promulgated by the IPCC.
      
      He highlights papers that give evidence of natural factors (oceanic cycles, solar influence, clouds) governing climate patterns,.
      
      It’s up to you whether you ignore the papers K.Richard highlights.

        The authors may not like the interpretation others place on their research findings, but that’s not the issue.
        
        Maggy, as you know, it isn’t a question of “like”, they think that the interpretation is wrong – because their data doesn’t really address the issue of global warning, or the actual trend in the data is opposite to what notrickzone reported, or that the graph used on notrickszone was the wrong one. I’m left with the impression that notrickszone has done a variant of a “Gish Gallop” here.
        
        But, at the end of the day, you’re quite entitled to take notrickszone as gospel, and I’m entitled to think it looks dodgy (having taken the time to look) and not worth wasting my time on.

    billmurray, the possibility of marriage is just one of many interesting questions to be addressed. A few more to consider:
    
    1. Where does the celebrated Vogue cover modelling opportunity fit into all of this, if at all? Ms Ardern says that she knew about her pregnancy on 13 October, but it was some 8 weeks later on 9 December that we first became aware of the Vogue contract for its March issue. The photo-shoot itself then seemed to take place very quickly – the likely reason for which is only now becoming evident.
    2. Was Vogue informed at the time of its contract that Ms Ardern was pregnant? If so, how did the magazine become entitled to that information before the NZ voting public? A case of personal opportunity trumping principle, perhaps?
    3. Will Vogue’s March issue be its first to feature a ‘pregnant model’ cover?
    4. In relation to the ‘secret’ section of the Labour – NZ First 138/133-page coalition agreement, there is still no plausible explanation for the 5-page discrepancy (WP’s claim of a change of type-face would not pass my own ‘smell test’, but that’s just me). Did that section deal with the Acting-PM role when Ms Ardern would be absent for more than a day or two, and what would be the ‘results’ of Peters having a material spell as Acting-PM? A Knighthood, perhaps?
    5. Where now is that former 5-page section of the Labour – NZ First 138/133-page coalition agreement? In whose safe(s) has it been deposited for possible future ‘leverage’?
    
    So many questions, so little genuine candour around this Labour/NZ First Coalition Agreement.

        Sorry to have misled you – the secret Coalition Agreement was a mere 38/33-page document. The reduction of 5 pages in question represents about 13-15% of the actual document, not the 3-4% that I thought earlier.

        I don’t really like to admit this one, but an Aussie Chick did fall for a bridge in southern France and married it.
        “Jodi Rose married Le Pont du Diable Bridge in Céret, southern France after falling head over heels for the ‘sensual’ 14th century stone structure.”
        I am unclear if the marriage has been consummated and if the bridge has the same feelings towards her, I guess in todays world, it really doesn’t matter.
        I always wondered if she can stop people walking all over it.
        This makes polygamy look fairly normal?
        On the bright side, she cannot go off and marry several bridges, she needs to be a male Muslim to do this.
        If she changed to a gender neutral unspecific, it maybe a different “ball” game.

      I saw her spouting her two penneth worth re the PM. Would someone please tell Jenny Shipley to stop dyeing her hair jet black. It looks hideous and most unbecoming on her. She is an almost 66 year old woman and women of that age do not generally have jet black hair. It was, indeed, a sight for sore eyes.

  On a brighter note, thanks for your recommendation recently about the Beatles greatest album being Revolver. Took the time to listen again after many years. Don’t agree – still Abbey Road for me. Nonetheless I can see why some rate it highly. Diversity of musical styles without the excesses of Peppers or the White Album. And even though they were no longer the simple “I wanna hold your hand” band, Revolver still seems…compact.

The CIA, NSA, and FBI involved in illegal surveillance of the opposition party’s presidential candidate using Democrat paid opposition research as a fake basis.
    
    Nixon tried to sic the CIA onto his opponents and was rightly reviled for it – and he didn’t succeeed in getting them to do so. Obama seems to have succeeded in using the entire apparatus of the state (and incompetently as per usual with him) against his party’s enemy and yet it seems that’s OK with not just the media but much of the chattering class as well.
    
    Let’s hope for the sake of US democracy that there’s serious prison time for those involved in this if, as it appears at this stage, illegal surveillance was conducted. If not, why, then Trump must be allowed to do the same, use the FBI and other intelligence agencies to snoop on the Democrats.

Congratulations to Cindy and Clarke, hit the right button at last – there nothing more precious than a child, although this is often forgotten in New Zealand.
This along with her Royal Marriage and another on the way is an Election winner without a doubt.
Great Granddad Winston will be pleased- it is clear that he and may others were fully aware of her condition a long time ago.
A new “Mother of the Nation” will titilate the media and most of the women.
Parliament will stagnate as any comments will be immediately construed as an attack on a poor pregnant woman.
I hope that either Miss Helen Ardern-Gayford or Mr Winston Ardern-Gayford will be born well and give great joy to their parents.
I assume that the media will set up separate Departments and Websights to keep us daily appraised of progress in the birth of this child, and Gayford gets his paternal financial due from Winz for the solo father hood.
I assume he will be named as the father in the birth certificate.

Fair enough. Sounds like he is getting the MBIE compliance group to investigate initially, where normally the process is an application to the Tenancy Tribunal with supporting evidence from the applicant. Either way, cases that go to the TT should provide info on their attitude to market rents.

MBIE staff will be pleased with the extra workload. Save them sitting around waiting for complaints about slum landlords.

  I would have thought the market would set that. If there is a shortage of rentals available, then the laws of supply and demand would set the rents.

    There are some Tenancy Tribunal decisions on this. The following is from a recent case, link below, which also goes into more detail.
    
    Students and others who think their situation might result in a rent decrease might find it is difficult to prove the ‘substantial’ bit, especially if there are a lot of cases / enquiries. Because surely cases become comparable where there are plenty of them. So the more of them the more they are likely to be in acceptable range of market rent.
    
    The Tribunal has power to reduce rent to market rent if the amount payable exceeds market rent by a substantial amount.
    
    Market rent is defined as the rent a willing landlord might reasonably expect to receive and a
    willing tenant might reasonably expect to pay for the tenancy, taking into account the general
    level of rents for comparable premises in the local area.

  D DIMP , my advice is if he’s level headed he will be fine ,however if he has any drug /alcohol tendencies kicking them out can be a fatal mistake.
  the worry about a son /daughter who has any sort of addiction or even nuisance problems with drugs/alcohol is much easier managed if they are close at hand .
  at 23 he’s probably going to come good in the next couple of years so booting him could be a mistake that could be regretted forever.

6 – Announces finally that she is pregnant, as well as admitting it is a considerable surprise to herself and partner, who thought IVF would be needed to have any children – thus messing about (while bored out of their brains with Electioneering), getting pregnant when they thought it not possible, just like so many on the DPB, rather than the declaration that Ardern’s …

      Is a problem for her. Irrespective of pregnancy or not, I’ve not seen anything in Ardern that inspires me with confidence she will be a good and/or competent PM, other than on the PR front. And yes, having a child will add to her challenges.
      
      And when they were in opposition Davis, Twyford and Hipkins were among the better performing Labour MPs. They sure knew how to put pressure on their govrenment opposites and keep their portfolios in the headlines. So contrary to Ardern’s claims at the time she put together the cabinet, she does not have an ‘abundance of riches” to whom to delegate, let alone even safe pairs of hands.
      
      Credit to Mahuta, though. The way she saw emphatically off the challenge in her electorate via the Maori King/Tuku Morgan, she must at least be a hell of a local MP in touch with the concerns at the flax roots. But whether that translates to Ministerial competence is something else.

Invercargill Mayor Shadbolt is preparing for an appeal court hearing over a decision in his favour on a defamation action.

In his column today in the Southland Times, Shadbolt says he’s spent most of the holidays fund raising and preparing for “my defamation case, which will be held in February.”

Invercargill city councillor Karen Arnold in 2015 sued Shadbolt and Fairfax NZ over four of Shadbolt’s columns in the Southland Times, two of them also appearing on Stuff.

The Otago Daily Times reported that the columns talked about her stance on various council projects including proposed commercial transactions involving the council’s trading company Holdco, and a proposed kakapo chick and tuatara display house.

Arnold lodged an appeal after losing the preliminary action. Shadbolt has counterclaimed over a letter to the editor of the Southland Times from Arnold.

Arnold unsuccessfully stood for Mayor in 2016 against Shadbolt.

Meanwhile, Shadbolt says the heat wave in Southland led to folk in Nelson quipping to him that Shadbolt’s city would be changing its name to Invercairo, but the quips were a change from “you brought the rain with you from Southland.”

      Many years ago I remember watching an old film of knights of old jousting outside a castle.
      
      To mount their horses they were hoisted up with a block and tackle arrangement on a wooden tripod and the horse positioned below. Then they were lowered onto the saddle.
      
      That would solve the Huns consummation difficulties.

Few could feel other than pity for a woman suffering the misfortune to be born into the hell known as Islam. Consider the afflictions her arsehole religion has brought upon her:

Diabetes due to years spent indoors just cooking, child minding & eating.

Ongoing medical complications as a result of the genital mutilation she suffered as a child.

Rickets due to a vitamin D deficiency caused by a lifetime dressed in a garbage bag even in a NZ climate.

Numerous genetic disorders including poor cognitive reasoning, eyesight, heart & respiratory function caused by her cultures acceptance of marrying first cousins & nieces.

Domestic violence promoted by her status of an inferior chattel.

Sucks to be Muslim with a surplus of X chromosomes.
