  Yes, it doesn’t help when your child’s school gives you their stationery list at the end of the school year for the next. However, said list is 4 times what is required, it must be delivered to the school on day one, and you are advised that if you don’t comply & stationery runs out you will be invoiced for any supplied by the school. Though sadly we know that if you provide the notified quota, the school happily dip into the pool of stationery to provide to those kids whose parents cannot afford the stationery. Welcome to socialist NZ 2018 style.

  I agree WG but the need to provide these newfangled school uniforms, EDs and exercise books must have come as a massive shock to parents. If they had been aware they could have put some money aside and not blown it all at Christmas

        Why hasn’t it been stopped–it smells of secret commissions. Schools making a profit from school uniforms or supplies are effectively taxing pupils. That is illegal.

        Not in aussie….I did the first year at high school[catholic] shop at Officeworks yesterday for au$50.20………although I did have to pay the school directly $40 for a scientific calculator. Big W was cheaper but I didn’t find that out until on the way home where I spent $21 for school books also. About $70 in total which isn’t bad I’d suspect.

      Agree. The schools have taken over as main stationery suppliers to the students in a lot of cases. This is how it works. The school goes to School Supplies who lavish them with gifts (beware of Greeks bearing gifts) depending upon the amount spent with said company. The school then set themselves up as the local stationer and cranks up the price on some items in order to make a profit – they say it’s part of their fundraising strategy. The local stationer and the school could do a deal which would end up with the school earning themselves a cash rebate from the local. But no, the school much prefers to try and corner the market not to mention create a hell a lot of work for themselves. Then after back to school is all done and dusted, the Chairman of the PTA visits the local and tries to hit them up for sponsorship for their gala day etc. No point in going back to the company they sourced their school supplies from as they’re not interested. After all, they’ve lavished them with coffee machines etc. So the local tells them to ‘naff off’ in a very polite way. Can’t have it all schools. You either support your community or you don’t. That’s how it works. Corporates do not sponsor small fish.

  My partner points out she has done 2 things to mitigate this, she started saving for her child’s secondary education when he started primary school and now has enough saved to cover all expenses (including a possible overseas trip), and she filtered out potential boyfriends (until I came along 2 years ago) to avoid having any more children to support (and we have agreed not to have any more kids so take the proper measures). I am seriously impressed in how she manages her money.

Prediction for the day

WeeWinnie will serve 12 months as DPM and will retire. He will retire on a pension based on his salary as DPM, considerably more than that of a list MP. There may even be a “bonus” as he will have been acting PM for a time.

This will pave the way for his second in command to become DPM. His deputy will be 64 at that time, he could serve as DPM for a year or two, attain retirement age and then throw in the towel as well.

So during the same parliament we could end up with two DPM’s retiring on two DPM parliamentary superannuation packages.

Now it is easier to understand what may, or may not, be in the 30-something page agreement, and why we will never see it released !

  A prediction that won’t happen. Much more likely that Winston will want to stand in 2020 and go through to 2023. He will back himself to drive NZF to do better than 5%. The transfer of power within NZF will all happen between 2020 and 2023.
  
  NZF is going to be desperate to get big wins in the next two years. Leadership changes won’t help that. Labour also needs NZF to get big wins. Many of them will be things the metro-liberals in Labour hate, more roads and more rural development. However, I guess they also know that they are unlikely to get back as govt unless NZF gets over 5%, so they will suck it up.
  
  I do think the six weeks of Winston being Acting PM will end up being 3 months. I don’t think a lot of people will hold that against Jacinda and Labour. She will ease herself back into the role of PM during the second six weeks.

      The Greens are essentially now part of the Labour bloc. National is likely to continue to outpoll them as a bloc.
      
      Anyway that makes NZF the key for Labour being in government, just as it is now. In contrast National really needs NZF out of the picture. Winston is no more likely to go with National in 2020 than he was last year. In fact much less likely. So it is in Labours interest to help him get 5%. It will be a different story in 2023, assuming NZF is still in Parliament.
      
      I heard Matthew Hooton on the RNZ this morning being a lot more negative about National than I think is likely. While it seems that Jacinda’s personal popularity will get a boost that may not translate to Labour especially if they look like not fulfilling their commitments.
      
      It is not like 2002 or 2011 when the incumbents were almost certain to win, and indeed did so.. The current government is very vulnerable. It is much more like 1975 or 1960.

        This is pretty accurate but I would add, Winston is unlikely to get over 5% next time because he was a protest vote, when protest votes turn out to have consequences their vote always crashes the next time round. But say next time around National & Act get about 45% and Labour gets 38/39% with the Greens pulling just over 5%, surely Labour will realize that a deal with Winston for a northern seat where they pull Willow Jean Prime or whoever off the ballot maybe necessary took get Winston’s 3.8% to count. But I’m not so sure Shane Jones will be around after the next election, he isn’t liking this.

        Wayne, I agree with your analysis. However, my question is, what is Hooton’s problem with National other than the near demise of ACT? He has had a downer on National for some time & he has been blinkered in his analysis of the CoL’s performance. Does National still have a cabal of electorates within the Auckland region still trying to run things as per their view of the world. If this is so, it is destructive & those who were in the old Auckland Division witnessed it in the early 1980s.

      His health must be a factor, considering the years of battering his body has taken. Genetics do figure in longevity, but Winston has been pushing his luck to the extreme. I would suspect he would never have his health exposed to the media flame like Trump did, because he would fail in most tests.

    WM interesting analysis. Quite thought-provoking – I’m not sure why so many downticked.
    
    You give JA’s constitution possibly more credit than is due, I imagine ‘relentless’ morning sickness, combined with her fragile emotional state will result in much wobbliness from JA in the lead up to the eviction of another of the missing million. If her fragility during the election is anything to go by (she came in to the election campaign late, got coddled into only doing friendly photo-op appearances yet even so she was looking tired, haggard and very drawn by the final week) she’s going to fall over sometime during April/May – followed by a long post-partum depression and she’s probably going to be the invisible PM for at least 6 months.
    
    Plus of course, childbirth changes all sorts of “of course I’m coming back to work straight away” resolutions. I’ve lost count of the number of strong, capable, career minded colleagues or staff who have done massive 180 turnarounds after sprog dropped.
    
    I think baby-brain will triumph and the best Labour can hope for is to bully JA into leading them into the 2020 campaign and stepping down almost immediately after the election (without telling the voters of her intentions, of course, she has form as a lying bitch after all).

Then to be anointed by surprise to the PM role so far above her minimal level of competence. Now it turns out she is chasing the baby bonus this year as well after waiting 3 months to be sure it has “taken”.
      Most appreciate this will be more immense pressure on her already fragile condition and while it is possible to “hide” the pregnancy for a time the mental mayhem is much harder to conceal.   I now really want to know what is in the 34 page coalition agreement. I bet there was loads of contingency statements for “if Jacinda becomes unavailable due to personal circumstances” added in the last few days, which would have been major red flags for anyone with half a political brain. And the fact that Winston first raised it’s existence makes me think he was being very mischevious about this.

Were they part of the Labour’s Creche meeting being held their in praise of the arrogant little girl who will cover the news until the next election.

      To be pragmatic, I think you are being far too narrow. For a start, there will, I think, be plenty of career-mothers (and their partners) and aspiring career-mothers who will want her to succeed in both roles, and will cut her some slack as a result. And that might cut across traditional party lines.

        Not exactly – a lot of New Zealanders are in households where the mother juggles a job (sometimes a very demanding job) and parenting. And, at this point in time, there are a lot of New Zealanders who were raised in families like that.
        All I’m saying is that these people aren’t going to want Ardern to fail as much as some of the Kiwiblog demographic (and they will cut her a bit more slack as a result). If anything, they would enjoy seeing her succeed.
        Feel free to disagree, but that’s how I see the lie of the land.

        SGA you may find that many of these mothers are like me and after 3 years of being told how amazing it is our current PM holds down a job and is a mother (like many of us) we will be sick of it and start to think “what makes her so special?”. That though is the kiss of death for her as we women can be bitches, especially to other women who seem to be getting special treatment for something we do on a daily basis.

        The part of history that is ignored however when we are taught about the rise of the Nazis is them acting as a bulwark of the West against Communism. Does Ms Ardern plan to work until she goes into labour? She says only that she will take 6 weeks leave after the baby is born, that Mr Peters and others will take up her roles for 6 weeks.

Some women do work right up to the day, but to me it is highly likely she will tke time off beforehand, possibly for medical reasons. She may have certain intentions but elderly primigravida, high profile / high stress job – not a great combination for health of mother or baby, or both.

        Actually it is in effect 26 weeks as no insurance company will cover you. You also do not want to fly via Singapore because if you are unfortunate enough to go into labour early and give birth to a boy in Singapore he is eligible for military service in that country.

  At this stage Ardern doesn’t have a fucking clue about reality. One thing I find about motherhood is that one has to be able to change one’s plans. Babies do not go according to plan I’m afraid.
  Oh and as for going back to work at 6 weeks – the La Leche League Feminazis will be up in arms about depriving the baby of the breast…….
  Unless Ardern proposes to pump four hourly and send the breast milk to Auckland via courier……..

    I suspect that is to do with the fact that when Clinton was standing for election the USA was not mired in the Middle East and so military experience was not seen as important.
    Now, with the debacle that is Syria et al, acting as Commander in Chief actually means putting bodies in the way of bullets and some empathy with the military is thought to be important.
    
    Interestingly, Trump has an approval rating of 44 % with enlisted troops, but only about 30 % with officers.

Breakfast TV

Holy crap, in the spirit of tolerance and open-mindedness I tried out breakfast TV this morning.

Firstly Hayley Holt is a real thick idiot, no wonder she stood for the Greens. I watched her struggling to pronounce “impasse” – she had three goes at it before looking around for help from her co-presenters. Her and the three mouth-mincing beta-males host make for a skin-crawlingly nauseating viewing experience – reminding me again why I hadn’t tuned in to breakfast TV since Paul Henry left. Honestly, who the hell do the broadcasters think want to watch such a totally unrepresentative bunch of left-wing knobs?

For a bit of balance, I flicked over to the AM show on TV3 and almost threw up in my mouth after watching about 20 seconds of the repulsive simpering Amanda Gillies. What is it with that horrifying grimace she pulls where she draws her lips back when she speaks to thrust out her Ardernesque whitened pegs like some demented white shark biting down on a rotting seal carcass.

Thank the heavens for Netflix. This, my first foray into legacy terrestrial TV in years showed me that I am not missing anything at all by not tuning in.

I feel unclean from this experience, I have to go shower now.

  There is no doubt that this woman whose face and lightweight life stories have been plastered on every magazine page, who will appear in US VOGUE has a high opinion of herself.
  
  Nobody is commenting publicly that it is incredibly self seeking for the PM and her boyfriend ( a renowned celeb skirt chaser and self promoter)to have an at home stand up press conference to announce their 20 week old pregnancy. A two to three sentence press release announcing the impending birth, declaring their happiness, but asking for their privacy to be respected would have been the thing.
  
  However, that is not remotely what Brand Ardern/Gayford want is it!! Ultimately they’re seeking to politicise and monetise their brand. Gayford has always liked ( ahem) to supplement his income, so on top of world’s best fisherman we’ll now be subjected to endless columns on stay at home Dad life.

Everyone seems to think that Jacinda is a leading light for working mothers. Well I think she is the complete opposite. I think working mothers are going to feel, justifiably, incensed that she is making light of the hard yards they have to go through to make a living. She can airily proclaim that she will take just 6 weeks off and still run the country where as working mums know that it is not that easy, that most of the time you feel exhausted and anxious, and barely able to cope. Her proclamations are just going to make working mothers feel inadequate and ashamed and probably turn right off her.

Bwahahaha – just caught the tail end of a Radio Live interview with that twat Hugh P (who released another report), seems the host disbelieved some of Hugh P’s answers and solutions, saying that Hugh didn’t seem to answer his questions well!

  Wasnt 60 years ago. Its was the late 70s.
  Just last year we finally matched just 10 years ago.
  Techniques have changed too. No longer are floors tongue and groove hammered in each strip. As well pre framing is essential now ( dont require trained carpenters)
  Builders no longer dig footings by hand or mix concrete on site.
  
  Yes, modern houses have got larger- thats one of the problems, they arent making homes for first homebuyers anymore. But modern techniques can do far better than the franchise/bespoke house builders which seems to be the only choice now.

        You’re partly right. Pre framing came in stages but the first was trusses which if I recall correctly couldn’t be constructed “on site” because there was no way to preload them.
        
        It wasn’t only nail guns. Portable compressors to drive them were initially prohibitively expensive. Similarly ‘Hi-ab’ trucks necessary to offload on site were a rarity until the late 70s & later.
        
        Lower equipment costs against higher labour costs were the drivers. As such the unions & their pet Labour Party have reduced employment while keeping costs high through largely unnecessary regulations & compliance costs.
        
        The winners aren’t the house purchasers or the builders……rather the clipboard carrying arsehole is king.

        Maybe we were a little behind the times in the Wairarapa Don. The first Hiab in the fleet of the firm I drove for was a Ford D1210 (I think) the boss bought in the mid 70s for moving fertiliser bags which were replacing the old cwt sacks.
        
        Unloaded it was a dog to drive because of the weight of the crane but there was no shortage of work for it.

  Identified builders as cash cows and are sending their stormwater nazis out to fine companies for building site run off.
  ACC have done precious little to curb undesirable discharges in to the sea, but demand that the temporary silt run off on sites not yet connected to stormwater drainage be stopped immediately.
  Could it be that there is a housing shortage in Auckland because of this kind of bureaucratic bullshit?

In another interesting snippet, the FBI has just announced that it won’t be able to release a further tranche of the text messages sent between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. That’s because they’ve lost them due a “technical error”.

What is really interesting is that the date when the texts become unavailable is 14 December 2016 and the end is May 17 2017; and May 17 is when Mueller takes over the “collusion” investigation.

So what revealing indiscretions are in these now missing texts that meant the FBI had to go to the trouble of losing them. Given the explosive nature of the information revealed in some of the existing texts, probably something really dangerous to important people still in the FBI. If the existing revealed texts show that Strzok knew well before Clinton was interviewed that she would be not prosecuted, and that Lynch had been told that Clinton would not be prosecuted before she effectively handed off responsibility to Comey to make the call, what other little gems might be in the missing items ?

Of course it’s just a technical issue, nothing suspicious at all. No one in the FBI could possibly have made these deletions deliberately, could they ?

As a complete novice when it comes to computer programming etc. my “understanding” of computer hacking has been some extremely bright back end computer programming geeks working their way through the code to find weak points etc.
But the British kid just used the old school conman’s tricks to break into high level US officials data. With the billions of dollars they have in their budgets you would think they would have better systems in place.

Second, if it is, what is causing the warming?

Third, assuming that CO2 is causing the Earth to warm, what is the cost of mitigating its impact?

So is the Earth warming? Yes! The Earth is warming, and it has been for over 150 years as the world emerges from the Little Ice Age. Atmospheric CO2 has also been increasing since WWI.

What causes the warming? That is a matter of intense debate.

In the 1980s, meteorologists observed that the Earth’s temperature was increasing at the same time as atmospheric CO2 concentration was rising.

A group at NASA concluded that CO2 is driving the warming. They developed a numerical model of the atmosphere that projected an alarming rise in the Earth’s temperature and made public announcements of an impending disaster. All the alarmist statements from the 1980s until today are based on numerical models.

But beginning in 1998, the Earth’s temperature plateaued (currently referred to as the “pause”) while CO2 levels continued to spiral upward. This caused a number of scientists outside the “alarmist” community to undertake an in-depth review of what has become a serious controversy.

    You quote 30 000 climate scientists. Sure that’s a big number. However, there may be 1,000,000 physicists in the world, possibly 10 to 15 Mil engineers, USA produces about 2250 chemist PhDs per year… So 30,000 climate scientists is actually not a lot. And a lot of the physicists and engineers reckon the climate scientists don’t understand basic physics (of which climatology is a sub branch of as climatology is really just fluid dynamics).

News that Auckland Council has lodged an application with the High Court to get an order to sell Bright’s house to recover the unpaid rates & costs. About time.

While there is some merit in her fight against the council & the CCOs, it is actually a socialist campaign against the use of private companies to provide council services, because she believes the council should provide the services from its own resources. A campaign of the misguided.

  I could not support the death penalty, even for treason, but life sentences in a real federal pen would be object lessons.
  
  This is presuming that the evidence is as damning as it sounds – it may not of course, partisan politics being what it is, but what evidence we have to date suggests that an effective coup d’état was plotted and put into action by members of the FBI, DOJ, and members of the Obama administration.
  
  Of course we’re likely to find that Obama himself “first read about it in the newspapers…” as was his wont.
  
  It definitely seems the right time for a special counsel or two, to investigate the corruption in the FBI and DOJ and in the Obama administration generally. Lynch is in the frame, as is Rhodes, Samantha Powers, Susan Rice, lucky for Holder he was probably out by the time this really started.
  
  And give some firepower to the division of the FBI (in Alabama) that is investigating the Clinton Foundation – give it some real teeth, a grand jury and possibly a special counsel too.

Auckland Council has published this media statement regarding Penny Bright. I note the following information:

Penny misled Kiwiblog readers when she wrote this on 3 January 2018:

As I am still not receiving the ‘democratic services’ to which I am lawfully entitled regarding transparency in rates spending under the Public Records Act 2005, my rates are still being disputed, and I am still refusing to pay.

There is currently no ‘live’ Court action.

Penny also misled the High Court in 2016:

In her notice of appeal Ms Bright advances as the grounds for appeal:
…
(c) the Judge failed to give sufficient weight to the steps she says she had taken to try to resolve issues with the Council;
(d) that the Judge did not give sufficient weight to the fact the Council had “effectively offered [her] rates postponement” which she stated she would consider once information was provided;
(e) the Council’s postponement offer had not been withdrawn so the matter should not have been taken to the Court;

Misleading Kiwiblog readers is bad enough – but misleading the High Court is a big no-no!

  I looked up the legislation regarding the High Court sale process a few years ago. I’m just going off memory here, but I don’t think there’s scope for Penny to advance a defence, other than to provide evidence that she’s fully paid the outstanding rates debt. In any event, if I were a High Court judge who’s aware of her tendency to mislead, I’d want to scrutinise every word of every statement that she makes!

    You are correct about a rating sale.
    It is an adminstrative process handled by the court but is not a judicial process. Similar to Mortgagee sales by the registrar of the High Court or applications to the registrar to arrest a ship.
    As it is an administrative process it is a box ticking exercise. The only way to stop the process is to cough up the outstanding rates, the costs payable on the proceedings and then the costs on the process, both the registrars and the lawyers the registrar retains (generally Simpson Greirson) so that wont be cheap.

Steve Hilton on Sky gave a very measured account of the Clinton Foundation. The coincidences with certain contractors and countries making donations to CF, and amazingly then getting government contracts. Even the most ardent CF supporter would have to have second thoughts.
