    This team does not want to play cricket unless a large pay packet is involved.
    
    Obviously there is no pride in playing for the Windies.
    
    Worryingly, with the current administration wanting to play only the short games the NZ team could go the same way.

      I think the NZ side under Williamson has restored a lot of the pride and respect for the shirt that disappeared when McCullum was Captain.
      
      I will never forget watching New Zealand batting to save a Test on the final day and seeing one of McCullum’s ‘Boys’ playing a fucking ramp shot (Hoping to catch the eye of the Indian T20 scouts)
      To McCullum Test matches were clearly just a chance to get a 20/20 ‘Hit and Giggle’ contract.
      Williamson seems to respect and enjoy Test Cricket.

        I think you are completely wrong.
        
        McCullum had the team attempting to win every game.
        
        He may not have got it right all the time but NZ did not become everyone’s “second” team by accident.
        
        People worlwide enjoyed watching them play.
        
        Since his retirement NZ fielding has drifted back to average and they no longer compete with the better teams (while still thrashing the minnows in real cricket).
        
        Notably in the coloured clothing they were thrashed by Bangladesh recently and lost their standing in the candyfloss stuff after being done by India for the first time.
        
        Looking for a T20 contract? McCullum’s heroics in the first IPL (10 years ago) means that his contract there is assured.
        
        As for Williamson “respecting and enjoying” test cricket I call bollocks to that.
        
        He is part of the ND led push to remove test cricket from the NZ program.
        
        He plays it because he has to and his performances recently reflect that.

        Every Captain has his right time and place in sport.
        
        When McCallum came in the Black Caps were woeful and had no backbone. Brendan might have been unconventional to the purest but he brought some mongrel to the team when we needed it and the rest of the cricketing nations sat up. Even Australia started having second thoughts when playing NZ.
        
        The semi final against South Africa would have be one of the best live sporting events I’ve ever seen and BMac had a lot to do with how we never gave up.

        Longknives; you seem to have forgotten when McCullum made New Zealand’s only test triple century, we were in the shit against India when he came to the wicket. He saved that match, and even gave us an outside chance of winning. That was after having made a double century in the previous match which DID give New Zealand a win.

      I agree money is the problem, but it’s not just the players, the problem is throughout the game.
      For most of the past 2 decades traditional cricket has not drawn the crowds to fund the game, but pyjama T20 has (especially the IPL). So, “to secure” cricket, the ECB together with the ACB and the Indian Board divided a two tier regime of England, Aust & India as tier 1 and the rest would be tier 2. This allowed Aust, Eng & India to play each other more frequently & guarantee more money. Leaving the other countries to fight for the scraps. This leaves players looking for chances in the IPL or to play in the Aussie Big Bash for a big pay day. End result tours like we’ve just had are not good for the game. Irrespective of how well the kiwis are going.

    When you look at the old windies test teams, you will notice just about all of them played English county cricket.
    
    You lived and breathed cricket in a professional environment, what you’re seeing here is how average and amateur the domestic game is in the Caribbean.

      Their fall was precipitated by this as late 90s (I think) they said they’d only pick from players in the domestic league. So Haynes & Greenwich said goodbye as did other senior players. That left a weakened test side with no mentors for the test rookies. Predictably their playing standard plummeted.

  I have no interest in cricket whatsoever and I think its a boring waste of time…. BUT…. I have enjoyed reading the comments here following MT_Tinman’s original post.

  No – Peters has been told by the Party (read the Martin women) to stay away and out of things as they negotiated the Labour agreement – Peter was their but only in spirit (whisky).
  He is expected to be away a lot of the time leaving the “ladies” to lead their forlorn fight.
  The Party is now prepared for the non existence of Peters.
  Of course he will splutter from time to time but with no real effect in the longer term. The Party has decided that now they have their own baubles to play with without Peters, despite what he may think in his dotage, and baubles.

Hope the clown Justin Lester known as Wellingtons Mayor has gotten off his taxpayer funded arse and directed his taxpayer funded employees to make sure the street drains have been cleared of debris.
After all with the forecasted storm heading for Wellington,a repeat of the flooding which took place last week should not be repeated.
Was not a good look for the now being repeated inept inane services that Wellingtons rate payers are paying for.
Almost daily we read or hear about the goody two shoes,too sweet to be wholesome Lester,and his deeds of derring do for the City and its services.
Seems since the ratepayers were gouged to pay for the so called living wage, services for the city have taken a hit.
Time for Lester and his gang of Lie-bour/ Green council freeloaders to deliver for the ratepayers,and stop telling us all how good they are. Perception says ,good all right ,good for nothing.What a disgrace.

        WG, flat pack duly assembled. No thanks to generic Asian instructions – all diagrams that don’t make sense and no words, plus one pack instructions were missing. Of course there was the usual inventory of missing pieces, and excess of others, all put right by trip to local hardware DIY store and a bottle of PVA glue. Par for the course really.
        
        The rain here has been persistent since 11.15am, and the wind has got up after dark. Though, no flooding here yet, rivers are not too swollen. Because of rain over past 3 days, may be the rain is soaking into the ground which is good news.

        Sorry, Gazza so far they’ve oversold it again! West of Warkworth, it was rain after 7.30, drizzle until 11.15, & then a slightly heavier shower of rain. We’re not complaining our grass & the tanks needed the water.
        As for Auckland, given the crap (pun intended) about Water care, expect more of the brown stuff & may be a flood in New Lynn (because of the screwed up drainage).

  When the council first brought in the so-called ‘living wage’ it was stated that there would be no impact on ratepayers as the cost would be borne within the existing HR budget.
  
  Huh? Where did they think the featherbedded budget came from?
  
  Since then the living wage has been extended to some council contractors. Don’t recall any mention of HR budgets. Funny that.
  
  The city voted. Must be time for a decent conservative platform.

Where Penny Bright has got herself …
From the comments around 5pm–6pm yesterday, regarding Penny Bright, it seems there is no pending court action, her rates are still being disputed, and she is still refusing to pay.

It is obvious that the loss in her total rates and penalties owed is fairly inconsequential to what the Council would need to spend to fulfil the simplest of her private contracting information requests, which are probably “commercially sensitive” anyway.

After ten years of obfuscation, her legal manoeuvrings seem to have sidelined any need for immediate Council action and the issue can be largely attributed to her “George Wilder” image – apologies to George Wilder. The Council can probably now ignore Penny Bright.

The next likely Auckland Council interest in Penny Bright will be if she expires, or puts her home on the market. Meanwhile Penny seems to have obfuscated herself and her rates issue into total inaction until, as suggested in the preceding sentence, either of those two conditions are occur.

Of course Penny Bright could suddenly pay everything she owes – if she has conscientiously set the funds aside to do so if legally compelled – admit her approach so far as a failure, and declare standing for Auckland Council to fight their incompetence from within.
But that is not going to happen, is it?
Find something else to do Penny instead of wasting your life as the quaint Council anomaly you have obfuscated your stance into being.

  She may come across like a crazy old cat lady but she does raise a valid point in that Auckland Council is a huge money pit with no accountability.
  
  Billions upon billions of dollars spent on what? or given to who?
  
  Personally, I think local council was another of Nationals big failures, the whole local government level needs a complete redo.

    Yes I agree but she is not equipped to ask the right questions. And she mashes together the legitimate question of how to fix poor local government, with separate questions of corruption, anti privatisation, and opposition to markets and capitalism.

    No one disputes that Auckland Council is a huge money pit with no accountability.
    
    Extravagant art works should probably not be commissioned before a few sewers work better.
    
    But even regards ‘core spending’, Penny has been fed information about Auckland Council computer services over-runs – IT’s own failures, and then it was supposed to be the key to all super-city savings – however she does not seem interested. 
    
    Rather, Penny not paying rates seems based on a personally held idea that Auckland Council should not privately contract work, but have its own fleet of bulldozers, mega-trucks, tunnelling machines and all the equipment to do its own city development and maintenance, with nothing but a vague memory of the past ‘ministry of works type department’ to compare it to.
    
    In the past, Penny has held that a phrase in the rates legislation entitles her to information about actual rates spending, that is obviously not the intention of the law, but she then ignores the same law and the procedure it lays out if she disputes her rates bill.
    
    And why does she demand contract details? Is she a forensic accountant or a guru in business efficiency? Or is it still driven by her own “public watch-dog” label and a one-off success in criticising water-services – so an ego-fulfilment more likely to just expire than transpire anything?

      Twofish, you got it with your comment that she wants Auckland Council to own and operate everything it needs to deliver its services e.g. she would prefer AT be like the old ARA with its own fleet of buses & not use private sector contractors etc. But in her Marxist pursuit of trying to find corruption, she misses where the real waste is occurring.
      
      Equally, given the good lady is a campaigner/champion against the corruption and waste of Auckland City, it is curious that she has never served a LGOIMA on Auckland City and its CCOs asking how much Auckland City and its CCOs spend answering her LGOIMA requests. Go on Penny, I dare you to ask….I can almost guarantee you that the cost to the Council, its CCOs and the Ombudsman’s office wasted answering your LGOIMAs will surprise you.
      
      And one more question, given the LGOIMAs you have served on Auckland City and its CCOs, how much corruption have you actually uncovered? and where are the prosecutions?

    I agree with your last sentence, one of the previous govt’s failures, was its policy on local government, though a portion of blame must go to the bureaucracy in Wellington (which neither of the Key or English govts stood up against).
    
    However, I take issue with your comment that she makes the council and its CCOs accountable. She doesn’t, I can assure you there is waste alenty within the council and CCOs that Penny is not interested in. Her campaign against the council is based on the misguided notion that council and its CCOs should not use private companies to deliver council services, and that somehow the contracts that let services to a private sector company are some way always “corrupt”. Yet despite her LGOIMAs served on the Council and CCOs, she has never proved corruption.

  She has the rat cunning to own an asset that has skyrocketed in value thus earning an untaxed fortune and not only has she derived untaxed rental income she has managed to not pay any outgoings on the property.

A woman goes into my corner dairy, runs out without paying for a couple of packets of ciggies, escapes Laurel and Hardy-like with her male accomplice on a bike (one between the two), is chased down the road by the plucky wife of the Indian dairy owner…

Five police cars and two tracker dogs arrive within minutes. Two of the police cars and the tracker dogs are still there two hours later.

I’m impressed by the concern shown by the police- but overkill?

  The case could well have been a robbery , a very serious offence. The more robbers caught and identified and hopefully imprisoned , the less robbers on the streets and the safer society becomes.

    It’s probably taking so long because Mueller and his team are making sure that when they announce the results of their investigation, whatever that conclusion is, they will not have left any stone unturned.
    
    What we are seeing is two monumental egos playing off against each other in the press: Trump just attacks anything or anyone as a reflex, Bannon is licking his wounds after the Alabama debacle.

      I’m not exactly sure how these things play out, but I don’t think Mueller will be ‘announcing’ anything.
      Various people will/will not be charged as a result of the investigation & Trump’s hold on power may become untenable.
      Wild horses won’t force him to resign so either he’ll stay there or be impeached by the house & convicted by the senate.
      As things stand that’s not likely, but he has few friends in Congress, only groupies who will fade away when it suits them.

It’s much better being part of a nation bound together by history and shared experience than living as atomised consumers forever fighting for scraps and position from the Governments diversity lolly scramble.

There is nothing wrong this, it’s basic human nature.

Sure a bit of diversity is OK, but not wholesale race replacement.

    If you go to Japan, you will most certainly see Japanese. Wall-to-wall Japanese.
    In the major tourist centers of Tokyo, Tokyo Disneyland, Nara and other such places, you will hear Chinese as the second-most spoken language. The big department stores in Akihabara will have periodic messages in Chinese for those mainland tourists with the big, empty suitcases and wads of cash.
    
    One word of advice. Learn a few basic Japanese phrases. Japanese just love tourists who “make an effort” (but then, doesn’t everyone?)

  The wholesale replacement- or more correctly, internal displacement – is seriously out of whack.
  The host countries -Sweden, NZ, AU, UK etc had got their shit together after the severe social impact of the Great Depression and created social welfare.
  As of the early 1970s this was in balance.
  As at today, not at all.
  
  These other countries i.e. pretty much all of Africa and the Middle East despite the latter having for the most part great oil wealth have not got their sh*t together.
  Nigeria and Angola also have oil wealth but the ‘greater good’ is not something that happens in such places.
  The Middle East in particular spend a lot of time hating on each other, even within their own countries.
  Guest workers to their countries are typically treated like total crap.
  Yet in countries to which they go they expect handouts and will country-shop to get better deals.
  
  Is it our concern (NZ less than 200 years as a constructed nation) to take these no-hopers on board.
  I suggest not.
  
  Greater numbers of people in Australia are waking up to the fact that in pockets of Sydney West and Melbourne the immigrants from sh*tholes south of the Island of Crete are endeavouring to reconstruct the very same crime, inequity, and low standard of living they left. Why move?
  
  Should Sweden be subjected to these no-hopers from countries that never, ever invented or discovered anything.
  Whilst the Middle East had a proud history in maths, science and philosophy this was thousands of years ago.
  
  Africa had a light shining for a few hundred years when some North Europeans went to the largely unoccupied Southern tip of Africa.
  The Marxists had a serious campaign in the 1970s and 1980s and swept along a lot of naive puppets to protest the Caucasian improvement in this part of the world. Bad Bokkie!
  Now the southern tip of Africa is as bad as the rest – just don’t ask the opinion of Jacob Zuma or Grace Mugabe.
  
  Is this history repeating?
  Is the Marxist desire to break down established structures just another wave after the success of breaking down South Africa.?
  Was South Africa a test run to proof methods?
  There are plenty of snowflakes today that are brain-washed enough to want the destruction of their own countries without the ability to see where it leads.

  There is a major propaganda exercise being undertaken by the left. The moment any report on Red Radio goes to air that might put them in a bad light the station is flooded with emails and text’s.
  Local newspapers, run by the failing newspaper brand, are the same especially if the council is Labour dominated. If a letter is written that is critical of the council it is held back for a week then suddenly the paper is flooded with replies, usally the next day, giving the lefts pint of view.
  TVNZ is no better, the socialist reporters have taken control and as can be seen by the “Sewerage” and “Slip” stories in Auckland only the Council view is pushed and all others are treated as lightweight.
  After three years of practice the runup to the next election should be a dozzy.

  About this time 2-3 years ago Wallace Chapman was filling in on Radiolive and he had on Mike Williams as a guest, who was moaning that the National government needs to waste more money on education and he said something like “in 1878??? the government made primary education free and the economy surged to no 2 in the world.” He then said something like, “in 1936 the Labour government did such & such and the economy surged.” This was utter nonsense, so I called up Wallace and said that our standard of living was ALREADY no.2 before the free education, in fact in the late 1860s/early 1870s it was likely No. 1 (on Nominal GDP per capita) but by the end of the C19th we were down to no. 3 so it didn’t surge the economy and by 1950 we were 6th so he was clearly wrong especially regarding Labour’s education policy. So I hang up, then 10 minutes later Chapman is “the government needs to spend more on education.” He completely ignored simple economic facts, what an arsehole.

        An interesting part of the science is that the climate has been significantly hotter in the past. During the PETM, average sea surface temperatures reached 10 °C at the poles, compared to -2 °C today.
        
        It’s also been significantly cooler, of course.
        
        What effect does man have?
        
        We don’t know. That is the truth. I would be wary of anyone claiming that the question is “settled”. Again, a political term.
        
        It is right to ask questions. Asking questions does not make one a “denier”, although I do wonder about the mentality of people who use such a term in a scientific debate.

  They are not all dipthongs either. Two same vowels together may require a break between them. “AU” may be “a’u” or “ahoo” or “ow”. The user is expected to know–macrons are deprecated and glottal stops are not always written. Maori have the stop in Whakerewarewa. Elsewhere whaka is fa’a or faa. The double “aa ” may also be a long “a”. Context is the guide.

  Yes Kevn, meat putrefies much faster than plants.
  Not only do vegetarians (and vegequarians) live longer than meat-eaters due to overall better health, you hardly ever hear of one becoming seriously ill or dying as a direct result of a meal. 🙂

  The thing that puzzles me about Watson is his apparent wish to die of old age in prison. It would have been a challenge for him to be more unhelpful or obstructive when his case was considered by the Parole Board in 2016.
  
  It raises questions. If he is manipulative as alleged why didn’t he have a go at conning the Board? After all they’re usually susceptible to a well slung yarn as they’ve demonstrated time after time.
  
  I’m not suggesting that he’s not guilty of the murders but his conduct is weird.

I notice on Stuff that fans of the NZ rugby team are really getting bent out of shape about some Kiwi chap called Barrett not being selected as the best Rugby player in the world. What’s worse though is that there are only two or three NZ players selected in the world team.
The comments are an example of small minded NZ at its best.

  I was discussing ‘Greatest Ever’ XVs with a mate of mine (who happens to be a Sports Journalist)- His selection for Centre was Conrad Smith- Mine was a toss between Phillipe Sella and Danie Gerber.
  He was incredulous! “They wouldn’t even make the All Blacks”..”How many World Cups did Gerber or Sella win?” etc etc
  
  I honestly believe NZ Rugby fans are the most one-eyed and arrogant sports fans on the planet.

    Actually Knives, I would be with your mate on that one. Smith is without doubt the best centre I have seen. I used to be a huge fan of BOD and Mike Gibson but I think that Smith is the better player. If I had to pick an all time world team it would only have a few Kiwis in it. Lomu and Smith in the backline and Michael Jones and Ken Gray in the forwards.

      Really?? I’m early 40s so can’t comment on Bruce Robertson but Conrad Smith, fine player that he was, would struggle to make my top three All Black Centres!
      Joe Stanley, Steven Pokere, Frank Bunce etc
      Hell I know he went to League early in his career but I rate Craig Innes higher than Smith..

        Gerber was a great player who was used horribly by the 81 Springboks. They turned him into a bash player when he had far more skills than that. Bruce Robertson was a very good player, very much in the mould of Smith.
        Pokere….he must really rate as an unlucky NZ player. Fancy being in front of a judge who did not follow the code of letting ex or current rugby players off with a slap across the wrist.
