    The NZ Medical Assn & the PCNNZ are professional bodies with justifiable concern for the future employment of their members should the old & sick not be forced to continue their wretched, pain filled lives which hold no value for them.
    
    They I don’t agree with but at least I can understand their position. Not so the religious busybodies who hold that their fairytale beliefs in an imaginary deity give them the right to dictate the deaths of the rest of us.

I believe with modern palliative care this bill is unnecessary and the thin end of yet another progressive wedge. Abortion used to be illegal, some reformers in the USA want it to term now.
Grandma getting a bit cranky, give her the injection. Feeling depressed get it sorted.
My father died from cancer, and in the end the doctors kept upping the dose of morphine, I’m pretty sure that was what killed him.
We have got to today without this bill, so why now?
Why do we need to legislate death? We polished off 12,000 foetuses last year, if this becomes law, I expect there will be a lot of coffins combing out of rest homes and hospices before they should. I expect I’ll get a few red marks for this view, but we have got this far without legalised euthanasia, so let’s leave things alone. Personally i would like to go out high as a kite on medical Canabis, Opium, and anything else they can give me.

  Because it about a personal freedom with which we can choose to slip away.
  If you watch enough people they will often decide in their own sane minds that they no longer want to be on earth.
  
  Get out an meet a few without a jaundiced view of what you think is best and you could learn something.

  You’d be surprised how many agree with you, gardenofearthlydelights. It’s just not fashionable to hold your position. I do and am proud to at least have some understanding of ethics. Euthanasia is totally unnecessary. This myth of dying in agony is just that, a myth. Why on earth should a doctor have to take responsibility? That is utterly gutless on the part of the dying and their families.

    Who says that “a doctor has to take responsibility”.
    
    All I & it seems most others want is assisted suicide where drugs or some other means are made available to the sufferer to take their own life. It could be the doctor, the cleaner or a chemist shop assistant who hands them over.
    
    All that is required is a change in the legislation that presently allows prosecution of someone aiding or abetting a suicide.
    
    Euthanasia is the term used by people who want others to mentally visualise assisted suicide as death squads hunting down grannies.

if a person is so crippled with a terminal condition that they can no longer stand life ,why should anybody tell them they must suffer thru the last weeks, days ,minutes of life until they die.
i say to those mostly religous nutters ” GET FUCKED”.

Interestingly, the opponents of this bill think that the families will be able to make the decision for their elderly relatives. As I understand it that is NOT the case. So saying things like “Grandma getting a bit cranky, give her the injection. Feeling depressed get it sorted.” is stupid.

I nursed many dying people in my life and oversaw the death of my cranky, beloved 92 year old mother last year. There was a time when I was absolutely in favour of euthanasia but now, having seen the extent of elder abuse from grasping, greedy family members towards their old parents, I have some reservations. Frail oldies often have no defence against these bastards who only want the inheritance. I could tell you stories that would break your hearts. I would vote for it but to say there won’t be abuses is to deny reality.

  While I agree there are some nasty grubbing relatives trying to take advantage of some elderly, there will be stiff legal measures in place to deal with such people.
  
  I am supportive of the End of Life Bill as I believe it gives those near death or in horrific pain who choose this way of departure the chance to leave this world with a little dignity. Personal choice – I’m in favour.

      I have already entered a submission in favour of the End of Life Bill nasska.
      
      I agree with you that religious belief among our political representatives badly influences their voting to the detrement of this Bill. I only hope MP’s vote how the majority of NZ’ers have been polling on the issue – for the Bill’s introduction.

    It is utterly naive to think measures will be put in place to protect the elderly. So you are telling me that 12,000 New Zealand women a year would go insane if they carried their baby to term? because mental health is the main reason these babies are killed. There will always be immoral doctors who will stretch the boundaries, usually to make a quick buck.

  I have noticed with a lot of elderly they have such a fight within themselves to stay alive it’s amazing. I think although I would love to be knocked on the head whilst I am still a little sane, if push comes to shove I would probably fight for my life until I was mentally ready to face my maker.

I made a submission during the committee stage, and was disappointed that any points made were lost in what became a tally of for and against submissions, and not regarded by the weight of the argument.

  What would we expect? The religio/conservatives are getting desperate & for them this is their last-ditch stand.
  
  They must win. Any skulduggery including threatening MPs, bullshitting numbers, emotive appeals or lying about consequences is doing the work of their Lord.

I just wish they would stay out of the personal decision of those who need to take this final path. Give us a little dignity, so we may have loved ones present when departing this mortal coil.
