Paula Penfold’s obsession with slandering the NZDF and seeing conspiracies in all their operations is reaching new lows. (see Stuff.co.nz and The Circuit’s so-called investigative journalism).

Now she is alleging that (shock horror!) they have been training Iraqi forces geographically closer to where they need to get trained than Taji! Oh how dare they! Never fear, Paula Penfold is here to reveal their detailed location.

Would she rather that the NZDF contributed nothing to the defeat of ISIS?

    She has prior form on this – in her piece on Afghanistan, she called in Keith Locke as an ‘expert witness on defence matters’!!!!
    
    With her, Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson constantly banging their gums against the NZDF, it’s no wonder ANZAC Day parades become a place of protest and slander against our servicemen and women.

  I don’t have a problem with the army being let out of it’s barracks and help sort out the fuzzy wuzzy.
  What I do find totally unacceptable is the hypocrisy of Col.
  Totally opposed sending troops to help the removal of ISIS.
  Burning people alive and throwing gays of tall building was acceptable in there sordid world.
  But now They have moved into the Big house secretly extending the army operations.

There has been quite some discussion on this site about Charter Schools.

The comments and arguments mostly appear to be either solidly in favour – or solidly against – with just a few in the middle ground.

But the one thing that does not seem to be considered in the discussions (I resisted the opportunity to use the word “conversations”) is the students who attend these schools – and what they achieve.

This issue SHOULD NOT BE a political discussion, it should be a discussion about STUDENTS.

And so I am somewhat bemused that there is virtually no reference to students in much of the discussion.

And the one member of the government who was a school principal seems not to be saying anything about this issue !

Most of us are parents and grandparents. My concern is what is best for my children and my grandchildren. I was educated in State schools, but these might not be suitable for my son or daughter.

And so I want to have the freedom of CHOICE. I want to be able to CHOOSE whether my child attends a State school or any other type of school which may lead to a better outcome for them. And I find it difficult to comprehend why there are so many contributors who are so galvanised in their opinions that they are failing to even consider their own children or grandchildren.

So please don‘t opine based on your political ideology, your union mantra, the size of your pay cheque.

Think like a parent and PUT THE KIDS FIRST !!

  It is highly political. So much so that Jacinda had to defuse it as an election issue or risk losing a small but potentially slice of left wing votes. The pupils and their families are also a potential political risk, they might start thinking independently.
  Similarly with the Chris Bishop situation. If you are hard left wing you do not want your kids having conversations with MP’s of the opposite leaning, you want to put up walls and barriers against this to have better control of your kids.
  So that is why a Labour government will try and consolidate as influence over education and broadcast media as possible while in power and try to do it in such as way as to be difficult to dismantle when finally voted out.

    Indeed. One only needs to think of the paper Clare Curran prepared for the Labour Party twelve or so years ago where she talked about the importance of “capturing the language”; now she is in charge of turning RNZ into an “independent” TV station, and is Minister for Open Government.

  If you are rich you can send your kids to Private school, for which are for all intents and purposes outside the state system, its ok but if you are poor and send your kids to a Charter school that’s evil. This sounds about face for a Labour government. It just goes to show that if the Unions say jump the parliamentarians say “HOW HIGH”

    I hear what you are saying Vic, but to balance the various arguments I would rather hear from PARENTS about their personal opinions rather than the party mantra.
    
    We all know the mantra, it is being shoved down our throats, but none of the “conversations” seem to include the STUDENTS or even make reference to them.
    
    Perhaps we can even hear from some STUDENTS about their personal experiences in charter schools ? I saw one interviewed on the news last night, and she was very lucid. We need to see SOME of this on KB

      Since when did parents or students opinions matter. It is the will of Chippie Hipkins and his union masters and puppeteers. Logic has nothing to do with it as Vic mentioned. It is nothing more than a political ideology and as it turns out one that completely contradicts their own “mantra” by putting at risk youth, at risk!.       Catholic schools used to be right outside the state system, but the State had to bail out the whole lot or most of them would have collapsed. Hence the ‘integrated’ schools which receive State funding in exchange for giving up some independence. Many but not all non-Catholic private schools became integrated under that scheme (for example Te Aute in Hawkes Bay was in a precarious financial situation). So Whanganui Collegiate was treated no differently than the other private schools that chose to integrate, the only difference being that it originally decided to remain private until finances became tight (the private schools run on very tight budgets, receive minimal State support and the parents have to pay GST on the fees).

      National didn’t bail out Wanganui Collegiate Sam. Collegiate was allowed to integrate into the state school system. In doing do, it saved around 100 jobs and a significant income earner for the Whanganui economy.
      
      Ironically, it was an issue that both the then-MP Chester Borrows and his Labour opponent Hamish McDouall were united on, much to the chagrin of the Labour Party. Hekia Parata was initially opposed to the integration, but representations from both men gave her cause for a rethink. That is exactly the kind of advocacy we have electorate MP’s for.

      Sam Green: I see that on its web site the school you refer to still calls itself Wanganui Collegiate.
      
      The name of the river was changed to “Whanganui” by the Government in 1991.
      
      In 2012, alternative spellings for the city – Whanganui and Wanganui – were recognised by Parliament.
      
      In 2015, Land Information Minister Louise Upston confirmed the Geographic Board’s recommendation that the name of the district be changed from Wanganui to Whanganui.
      
      So I guess the school can correctly spell its name in whichever of the city’s two alternative sepplings that it chooses.

  I would disagree that there was little mention of the kids themselves. Most of the earlier posts were focused almost entirely on the success of the kids. It only became a pro/anti union “discussion” later. And why not? They’re driving to shut down the charter schools. They are the problem behind the curtain.
  
  I think I agree with you on where you’re generally going with this: making a path to success for some kids who are not thriving under the school system. Focus on the kids.
  
  Yes, certainly, we want everyone to succeed and if Charter schools are achieving that then don’t screw with them. Put the kids before the unions and this is a no-brainer.
  
  Giving people the flexibility to choose to attend one school vs another is good because it injects a degree of “free market” into the school system – people can vote with their feet for the better schools with better teachers etc (of course the unions hate this because it causes competition and shows up slackers).
  
  However “choice” just for the sake of choice itself should not be taxpayer funded, IMHO. Choice is there to serve two purposes:
  * Provide adequate pathways for various means to succeed.
  * Competition to weed out slacker teachers/schools.

      The very existence of government services and a taxation system that takes from some people and gives to others makes this entirely political.
      
      As a society we need to determine where to put the line for how much the government should tax, what services should be provided and who should control the way that money is spent.
      
      The politics is really just the pushing and pulling to move that line around.
      
      There is a huge problem, IMHO, when powerful government unions intervene and prevent society from controlling the situation.

That was his theme song before the election and he knows that Willie Jackson and Kelvin Davis were dishonestly promising to resign if Labour closed the Charter Schools. Since last year, soldiers have moved beyond a purely training role, taking up new responsibilities to help Iraqi forces plan and conduct military operations.
The changes should have been made public and cause the public to question what New Zealand is really doing in Iraq, says human rights campaigner Harmeet Sooden.
“I think there needs to be public debate about are we actually helping the people of Iraq?” Sooden told Stuff Circuit.

    Right Jimmy as we know “loose lips sink ships” is intended in a much broader sense with such things today bordering on terrorism. Beware the enemy within. The Government approves it and funds then the NZDF get on with the job which they do very well. Operational matters are not political footballs.
    Watch the movie Eye in the Sky what a toxic mix emotions and outsider interference impacts of operational issues.
    Take a lead from Donald Trump who sees how flawed it is to channel too much to the enemy by grabbing a headline about troop movements.

    Or that we shouldn’t be engaging with the wider coalition efforts to advise and assist them?

      Well Digmen1 the rolling count will still be well out in front since the rate of rotation will be faster than construction.
      We are informed frequently that estimates have slid and best guess now is 8000 houses completed in their first term. Even that requires substantial “special worker visa” tradies being found.

      No way RF. Westport had/has a championship brass band with instruments/gear provided by the miners. Secondly Westport is the Buller province and the Kokatahi band is a West Coast icon. However the latter are struggling a bit as to many members have lost their clackers.

        Cheers RF hospitality second to none in Westport when billeted during band competition back in the day. The elderly couple took 2 of us lads then he got up at the crack of dawn to catch the tide and 2 pound of whitebait for our breakfast.         Funnily enough ABS, every Sunday at the Avondale Market there’s a dawah stall – manned by a couple of Pakistani grippers. I know this becase I’ve had several brief conversations with them.
        
        Their main poster, displayed amongst a number of others, proclaims that the word islam means ‘peace’. There’s a lie right there. Right from the get go. Islam actually means ‘submission’, ‘obedience’.

Today’s Herald leads with:

Walking past the piles of unsold dailies in the supermarket brings a smile to my face.   @ but calendar girl it is for the clicks. They have forgotten the relationship between high temp/increased rainfall since precipitation is so old hat. As always fools rush in etc as the global warmest “experts” that is the reason and it will get worse.
  Likewise when a Cat 4 storm is moving over so much water it has a better than average chance of making it to a Cat 5 before it does “find” landfall.

Seems they will go the same way as the other rag which was called “Truth”.Sooner rather than later.
My copy was a so called” free” copy even then it was too much.

    Probably the same one that gave Bernard Osram the article that councillors will be voting tonight on a report that recommends further study to give Auckland congestion charging in 10 years.
    This proposal is to fix anAuckland’s existent problem, being Auckland’s traffic & congestion. This issue is only on the motorways in the am & pm peaks and is the responsibility of NZTA. What that pathetic article on Saturday didn’t say was, this subject comes up every 3 years (conveniently when the council & AT are scrambling to fund their share of Auckland’s bloated transport strategy), and they work out it will never raise enough money or be politically acceptable, because:
    1. The arterial roads (AT controlled) are not clogged);
    2. There are a lack of alternatives available to drivers instead of a car (one of the reasons the fuel tax hams gone quiet).
    
    Any councillor who votes in favour of this report should tender their resignation on the basis they don’t understand the issues facing Auckland.
    
    A long term solution for Auckland’s shit does need their attention. But because it is a real problem & there is no glory opening a pipeline or a plant to carry shit. It will not happen.

They need to insist on a quota of at least 50% male teachers in all schools from Kindergarten up.

  AUT’s history: What was the largest technical college in NZ was renamed a technical institute, by 1974 was the country’s biggest technical educator.
  
  In 1979, it began teaching Maori studies (Maori technology was Stone Age) and by1997 was running Maori expositions.
  
  In 1993, it began issuing degrees. In 2000, it became NZ’s first polytechnic to become a university.

And as you didn’t link you comment about the history of AUT to your earlier complaint about the psychotherapy course (a discipline I suspect is in the moon beams and monkey shit category) I didn’t make the connection. Bottom line: the worth of an institutition is demonstrated by the quality of its graduates, and I’ve met plenty from AUT in both the technical and more academic fields who provided quality expertise.

        German technical education is an interesting one, as they begin at the secondary level, I believe. We have had technical secondary schools in NZ, and of course technical courses like woodwork, metalwork, sewing and cooking in the mainstream curriculum.         This is the sort of ore that the Iron Age was based on thousands of years ago.

        FFS, Stupid Stephie, you can see gold flecks in the South Island rivers, and there was a big industry extracting this out, first by gold pans and ultimately by gold dredges. A gold pan isn’t rocket science.
        
        Similarly with coal. There are many outbreaks on the surface in parts of NZ that have coal seams.

      It also has some iron ore deposits (Onekaka).
      
      Australia has vast iron ore resources and its original inhabitants never developed a metal culture.
      
      New Caledonia and New Guinea have vast metal -ore deposits and their original inhabitants did not develop metal smelting technologies.
      
      It’s a little bit more complicated than saying available mineral deposits weren’t here and implying that the first inhabitants would have developed the skills to work the product.

  A cafe in Taupo changed their 2 single-use cubicles to unisex.
  
  About two minutes later one of them had the unisex bit taped over with “Men’s” written on it and the other changed to “Women’s”. I think though it may have been more about the sanitary units instead of wees everywhere, if they have unisex toilets they really need to provide in each toilet in case. And that costs money.

We were in a Cafe yesterday afternoon and there appeared to be a steady stream of blokes heading for the loos. There were three toilets – 2 unisex and 1 disabled. I just don’t want to walk into a Unisex toilet and dodge the urine puddles left on the floor left behind males. Nor do I want to have to put my hand on the toilet seat and put it down….
  My husband doesn’t leave urine splodges over the floor at home so what is it about blokes who do?

Apparently the Chris Bishop/social media smear came from the Labour Party, and they had wanted to break it before the election last year. I wonder if Hooton will apologise for his unsubstantiated allegation from yesterday.

  That’s a bit of a LOL. Poor olde Matthew got absolutely slammed because he had an alternative theory and didn’t “tow the line” and demand an explanation from Labour or the MSM.
  
  If he’d said it was Labour, he would have got 70+ upticks, instead of downs, and there would be absolutely no questioning of his allegations, even if they were completely unsubstantiated.

    He didn’t just make the allegation once IT; it was made repeatedly in response to other comments. There were multiple references to the Brat Pack, to the old firm being back in business, and “subterranean internal wars”; the same stuff that is being promulgated on another blog.
    
    The allegation was pretty clear; Bill English’s team was firing a shot across the bows of an opponent from within. If the allegation is wrong, and it certainly appears to be, the person making the allegation should have the decency to withdraw and apologise.

      Hooton said Ardern may succeed in salvaging some popularity among voters, but he can’t see her forming a government on September 23.
      
      He said even if she did manage to bring together a three-party government made up of Labour, the Greens and New Zealand First he can’t imagine for even a second Winston Peters playing second fiddle to Ardern, as her deputy prime minister.
      
      Hooton said Peters would believe seniority counts for something and would absolutely insist on being prime minister.
      
      So that’s two strikes against Hooton’s soothsaying talents – Ardern did form a three-party government, and Peters accepted the role of DP, “power behind the throne/puppet master” conspiracies notwithstanding. 😉
      
      But I agree with Hooton’s essential opinion that Ardern is a flake.

    I went to a function yesterday and talked to a lot of youngsters I didn’t know. Thoroughly enjoyed talking to them. It is good to get a young person’s perspective on the world, however misguided. I would not expect our entirely innocent, friendly conversations to be the subject of outrage. Have just listened to Matthew Hooton on RNZ, supposedly giving the ‘view from the right’ to balance the left wing views of the other commentator.
It appears Hooton despised Bill English and the National Party.
Even the Leftie commentator, and Kathryn Ryan herself, seem embarrassed by Hooton’s florid denouncement of the National Party, and strong support for Labour.
How can Hooton maintain his role on this program ?

Be interesting to see if the EU cans daylight saving time. I hope they do, it might influence everyone else who uses it to follow suit.

I don’t mind DST so much during December to February, but once it gets to mid-March especially, the hot evenings combined with the very cold mornings become excruciating for sleep.

  I’ve oft wondered where they’re going to access that land V2. There are a few criteria to consider:
  
  1) Three crops of trees & the ground’s fucked.
  
  2) Anywhere over 250km from the nearest port that handles logs & you’ll make a loss.
  
  3) If access roading is required & you can’t con the local authority into paying for it ditto.
  
  4) It will only take one disease or pest that targets pinus radiata & it’s all over. Already in the Manawatu there’s a die back disease.
  
  5) There are species other than pinus but you’re looking at fifty plus years for a return.
  
  The speech from the hustings was world class but the devil is in the detail.

      I did similar Swifty. After Rogernomics killed farming as it was then practised my job as a driver vanished. A partner & myself risked everything we had on a nascent forestry venture & we were bloody near stuffed financially when an investment group from Auckland who had been burnt in the stockmarket crash decided to diversify.
      
      They paid up big time & that allowed me to get into a sheep & beef property.
      
      She’s a risky game gambling on anything that won’t turn a quid for 30 to 50 years.

        We’ve got an offer in on a small low maintenance place in Masterton & we’ll spend the rest of the housing budget somewhere around Kerikeri.

        The piece itself is indeed very accusatory towards DPF, which is probably why most KB readers will downtick it. No-one likes the idea that the media they’re consuming is inaccurate or misleading.
        
        Since you’re pretty confident DPF won’t see this, why don’t you email him the piece? I’m worried he’d also feel I was being passive aggressive and delete my email, whereas he’d pay more attention if it came from a long-term supporter like you.

Seems like the folk at the ADL (whoever they might be and whatever common characteristics they may share) are really beginning their crack down on Free Speech across the world (despite accusing Poland of doing the same thing a few days ago❗)

Whats the guts? I haven’t been on much today? Just had a quick scan. Seems to be less of the usual left wing twats, obviously off circle-jerking elsewhere.

The Listener has gone to shite, as has the SST. Happened in 2001. Combo of the Clark government sucking off or getting their tongues up a lot of the journos in the press chamber. Hits happened both on some journos and pollies that made up the former make-up of the House. The young Luvvie phenomenon Instead of employing trained Journos the networks employed twits with some PR experience.

Charters schools are fine. I’ve got one kid destined for a career in the arts and he needs a mixed education. The oldest already rules the roost at Middle School and will Mainstream. If there is a scrap he will fight back and will probably be a DA a one day. He’s a thirteen year old six foot monster and smart with it. I call him Wolverine. Fuck he’s got a mouth on him to match mine already and he’s not afraid to use it to challenge authority figures like teachers if they are just being twatty for the sake of it. A+ in everything. Stanford potential.
All kids need different schooling.

Lastly Labours shit housing policy is going to do nothing. This is how it works: The private sector adds to stock by identifying opportunity, adding value and moving on, taking profit but they reinvest and some lucky cunt picks up a relative bargain in an area not already impacted. Or the rental stock increases. And cry me a fucking river about urban sprawl. Beats the shit out of high density ghettoizing. We’d all end up living in Compton and having the lefties bleating about how it’s the rights fault.

Think that covers it.
