    Does anybody remember the NZ1 election campaign promises?
    
    One promise was the referendum about eliminating the Maori seats, and another was the referendum to reduce the number of MP’s in the house from 120 to 100. This referendum was promised for “mid-term 2017-2020.”
    
    That would put it about 12 months from now – – –
    
    I understand the Maori seats referendum is now off the table and buried somewhere in those 30-something pages, but not so the referendum on reduction of MP’s.
    
    WeeWinnie might be saving this one so that he can make an announcement as (Acting) Prime Minister.
    
    Personally I like the idea. It doesn’t make sense to have 120 MP’s representing under 5 million people, when Australia can manage with 150 MP’s representing 25 million people.

        Exactly – NSW, for example, has 93 seats in the lower house, and 42 in the upper in their state government. Same sort of thing applies when looking at the size of the US federal congress and senate. Colorado (roughly the physical size and population as NZ) has 65 state reps and 35 state senators (and, of course, the executive – through the Governer – is separate again).
        In each case, they don’t have to worry about all the things that the federal government takes care of. If they did, they’d probably be crying out for a few more bodies. Given our government has to do the job of a “state” and “federal” government, and, in comparison with the US, the executive functions as well, we aren’t that extravagant.

        True Kimbo. They act in much the same way as our City Councils do.
        
        In our system we have about half the MP’s who serve a constituency, and the other half who serve their party’s whim. We see many who have no desire to contest an electorate seriously and so they have nobody to answer to directly at the polls. A monkey with a tape recorder would always get SOME votes.
        
        Greens seem resiled to exist this way, NZ1 have had a constituency seat twice, ACT and Maori have both had constuencies too.
        
        List MP’s can potter along under the radar spending their time promoting ideology rather than serving their constituents.
        
        As for state governments in Aussie, remember our entire population is less than that of Sydney – much less !

        Really? The state governments are a bit more than that, aren’t they? For example, our City Councils aren’t responsible for policing, prisons, education services, and hospitals. Sure, the federal government can influence state policy and practice (by cutting off their bulk funding, for example), but the state governments take primary responsibility for such things, don’t they?

        Yes State Governments do runs such things. In health, for example, all three layers of government have involvement. Federal Governments sets all the criteria and funding, State Government runs the hospitals and local government does all the immunisations and health clinics.
        
        Areas like health ore over-governed to buggery in Australia because each layer of government has some involvement.
        
        How many people does it take to drive a bus? I’m sure you know the answer, but I don’t think it needs one level of government to decide where the bus goes, and another level to service the bus.
        
        If you google “Health” you will find that there is a Federal Minister, a State Minister and a Health department in local councils as well by way of example

      I live in a region where the elected MP has a very large area to cover.
      Never see anyone from party lists except at election time.

        Yes – this is one of the main issues.
        
        Many list MP’s from the same party tend to cluster together rather than branch out into regional NZ.
        
        Auckland for example has offices for multiple Green MP’s, but no representation in the North. West Coast another example – they have an electorate MP who has an office in Motueka and Greymouth – nothing south of there. No other list MP’s there either – end yet it is an immense electorate.
        
        The two major parties seem to spread some list MP’s around the country, but other parties just cluster together in cities.

        Cut backs should be from the list MP’s who are not answerable to any electorate, and tend to congregate in cities !

        This is entirely the point I was trying to make gravelroad. I referred to Northland and West Coast, both are very large electorates, there are also others. There SHOULD be SOME list MP representation in such electorates, but there is no compulsion to do so.
        
        This is compounded by the tendency for some list MP’s to “cluster” in main cities, like the Greens, and their tendency to ignore regions.

      I was curious (and it’s Friday) so I did some checking and adding up. Australia runs a federal system were the individual states (and NT) take prime responsibility for providing major government services such as law and order, education, and health (and other bits and pieces – it’s a lot more than what our City Councils do). As well as the 150 federal MPs, there are 371 state MPs (including the 25 NT reps).
      
      The federal government and most states also have an Upper House. There are 76 federal senators and 119 state senators (if that’s what they are all called).
      
      All up, the Australians seem to pay for 716 MPs and senators to represent their 25 million people.
      (Apologies if I’ve got the sums wrong – if so, it’s an honest mistake).
      
      Now, maybe 120 MPs for NZ is too many, but, as I said above, it isn’t as extravagant as it appears from KiWombat’s initial comparison.

  She was actually really good on the AM show this morning. Sadly the Herald headline was Twyford backs Judith to run a right-wing red-meat government and compared her to Thatcher. But what food could Twyford and his government be? – a left wing nut job nut milk government, with lots of promises on the cereal box and a bag mostly filled with air on the inside – a government most similar to Bernie Sanders and Trump and Truedeau in a weird incongruous coallition.

What’s happening to Tuvalu sea level?
What the science says…

Between 1950-2009 sea level at Tuvalu rose at the rate of 5.1 (±0.7) mm per year. This is almost 3 times larger than average global sea level rise over the same period.

So to sum up:

• Sea level rise is not level. Although the oceans are gaining water mass from melting land ice, and the oceans are expanding due to increasing heat content, this water mass and heat is not spread evenly over the oceans.
• In the tropical western Pacific the dominant short-term influence on sea level is the extremely large fluctuation due to the ENSO events El Niño (falling sea level at Tuvalu) and La Niña (rising sea level at Tuvalu).
• Sea level at Tuvalu can vary by 20-30cms from the influence of ENSO. This is 40-60 times larger than the annual rate of sea level rise at Tuvalu.
• This regional susceptibility to ENSO is because of the weakening (El Niño) or strengthening (La Niña) trade winds near the equator, which push warm water mass toward the tropical western Pacific.
• Becker (2011) uses a combination of tide gauge data, satellite observations, ocean modelling and GPS to assess sea level change around Tuvalu.
• Removing all the factors which affect short-term sea level fluctuation, the study authors found long-term sea level at Tuvalu from 1950-2009 rose at the rate of 5.1 (±0.7) mm per year. This almost 3 times greater than the global average sea level over that time of 1.8 mm per year.
• 10% of this ‘total’ sea level rise at Tuvalu is due to land subsidence
• Becker (2011) builds on earlier work by Church (2006) , and the South Pacific Sea Level and Climate Monitoring Project, which also confirm that sea level at Tuvalu is rising.

      Don’t want to dampen your enthusiasm, but water does indeed expand as it warms. It is anomalous though at temperatures near freezing in that it reaches its maximum density at around 4 degrees C and then expands as it cools below that. This is why ice floats.
      
      From the 4 degree max density point though, water does expand slightly as it warms all the way to boiling.
      
      A major unknown in the sea level debate is how the shape and size of the oceans is changing due to plate movements and sea floor expansion. Sea levels have been rising at a relatively steady state for quite some time, well over 100 years and may not be particularly coupled with gorbal warning. There is some possible evidence that the rate has accelerated, but despite claims that it is settled, it really isn’t.

        Of course, a warmer ocean and warmer air temperatures would increase the evaporation rate.
        
        At some point water would lose more volume from evaporation than it gains from expansion.

        No Ed, you are wrong on the physical chemistry. What you describe is the behaviour of fresh water. With salt in it, at similar concentrations to the ocean, the characteristics significantly change. The maximum density point shifts to a lower temperature. The upshot is that for salt water above 0°C, it expands as it warms up. The expansion rate is also slightly different as well.

      Water is utterly unique in that it does both = expand when it freezes and when it warms. Without this weird atomic quirk we wouldn’t have life.
      
      Water density is greatest at 4°C . As the temp goes down from there it expands (eg. ice takes up more volume than water); but as the temp goes UP it also expands in the usual physical way, until it eventually expands enough to float apart into vapour.
      
      A warmer ocean will have a greater volume than a cool one. (And salt water is more dense than fresh water – so if you could take the salt out of the sea the level would drop.) I’ll leave the calculations to someone cleverer than me.

        To complete the congratulations circle, that’s a good post Evadne and with more correct info (like evaporation) than I included. But we meant the same !
        
        Just wanted also to point out that evaporation itself won’t change much – it cools but the additional water vapour typically comes out (as rain mostly) fairly quickly.
        
        Interestingly most places near the sea rarely reach much over 32-33 degrees even on very hot days because at that point evaporation removes so much heat. Really hot places are inland. So Darwin for example is typically relatively cooler than, say, Alice Springs, because of evaporative cooling. Places by the Dead Sea get a lot less affect though because the water is so saline and has less evaporation.

        Take a glass, fill with ice ( any quantity, y0u choose) then add water to a level of your choice.
        Mark the glass to denote the water level.
        Wait for the ice to melt.
        When it has, again note the water level.
        
        Surprise, surprise. The will be NO increase in the level of the water. So much for the bullshit of rising sea levels due to melting ice caps.
        
        2. Apropos the water temperature issue. The temperature measuring bouys monitored from space showed what? Nothing more than natural and minor fluctuations. Oh, and NO acidification. Ergo, when it was deemed that monies spent on bouys could be better used elsewhere none the global warming nutters complained.
        Why? Because the bouys rubbished their cult ‘s theories.

    I am in no way a stephie supporter but facts are facts:
    
    Sorry mate, but water does expand.
    
    The volumetric thermal expansion coefficient of water is about 0.000200/degree C.
    
    Since the average depth of the ocean is about 4000 metres, if all the ocean water was increased by 1 degree, then the water would expand by:
    
    4000 metres x0.0002 = 0.8 metres.
    
    However 0.8 metres is not going to radically change Tuvalu, and, in fact, Tuvalu is actually growing.

      Of course the expansion of the water does not happen in isolation. The rock that the island is made of will also be warming. That means it is also expanding.
      
      If both are expanding, then the effect is going to be significantly less.

  You are showing yet again that you don’t understand maths, stephie along with your other numerous failings. That and believing a failed cartoonist who is a psychologist, not a sea level expert.
  If you go here http://www.psmsl.org/data/obtaining/map.html you can get the actual tide data for Tuvalu (Funafiti B) Look at the data, the big El Nino dip in late 190s shows. If you do a simple regression analysis on it, you get the number you quote. It is garbage – an artifact of an inappropriate analytical method. Something people who do statistics are always warned against. The sea level there isn’t rising – do the analysis for 2001 to present and all the apparent rise disappears. Do it with a quadratic fit (which is what you are supposed to do if you believe sea level rise is accelerating), and sea level is about to start dropping!

  The article says it was last updated in 2016. You must have missed the news last week that, based on a study by Auckland University, Tuvalu is not sinking but gaining land mass and will most likely still be here in another 100 years.

Islands considered most at risk of physical destabilisation are low-lying atoll nations7,8. Erosion, combined with increased frequency of overwash flooding of island margins4 is expected to render islands uninhabitable9,10. Incremental and event-driven climatic changes to ecological systems also present additional future stresses for island habitability, including the tolerance of agriculture crops to increased soil salinity, as well as concerns about water security, both in the context of drought and salt water intrusion of groundwater11,12,13…..
    
    ….Consequently, documented changes in islands throughout Tuvalu are considered to be driven by environmental rather than anthropogenic processes. In particular, wave and sediment supply processes provide the most compelling explanation for the physical changes documented in islands, most notably the expansion of the majority of islands, and their locational adjustments over the past four decades. Collectively, these processes can mask any incremental effects of rising sea level, making attribution of sea-level effects elusive, as these processes can promote higher frequency and larger magnitude changes in islands that can persist in the geomorphic record.
    
    On the basis of empirical changes in islands we project a markedly different trajectory for Tuvalu’s islands over the next century than is commonly envisaged. Observations over the past four decades indicate that the future of Tuvalu’s islands will be marked by a continual changing mosaic of physical land resources.
    
    Changes expected include the ongoing erosion of smaller sand islands in the archipelago (10 ha), stability of reef platform islands and increased mobility of atoll reef rim islands. Such changes suggest that the existing footprint of islands on reef surfaces will continue to change, although the physical foundation of islands will persist as potential pedestals for habitation over the coming century. Consequently, while we recognise habitability rests on an additional set of factors4,11,12,13 loss of land is unlikely to be a factor in forcing depopulation of islands or the entire nation. However, changes in land resources may still stress population sustainability in the absence of appropriate adaptive initiatives….”

  Interesting to see that a New Zealand Judge in Christchurch has bowed to allow Sharia Law to prevail, publically supported by the local Muslim Leaders.
  When the convicted Muslim boy goes to the Middle East and comes back even more radicalised then we will see the folly of bowing to Sharia Law.
  This is a first I believe – but not the last.

        determination while the religion of peace are much more ambitious chasing world domination. The gullibility of local natives has made them so malleable evidenced by being such an easy push over for Labour. They will be putty in the hands of radical Muslims who will be only too pleased to “show them the way”. So many have found a “way” through “guidance” from Destiny and the Mormons.       If so, I would agree with that.
      
      Where else in the world would a young man planning for a mass knife attack on citizens be given such a tap on the hand and have his name suppressed.
      
      IMHO, this is not justice, it’s Quisling-scale boot licking.
      
      I daren’t say what I think should happen to the judge if his release of the young idiot on a probation type sentencing fails.

        The information I’ve heard: Delegations from the Muslim community to the media in Christchurch sought suppression of Muslim links and names that would reveal Muslim links.
        
        The coverage of the Christchurch-radicalised pair killed by US drones in Yemen received more publicity in Australia than it did in Christchurch. I assume the light coverage in the Christchurch Press was the result of local-Muslim approaches, rather than lack of news sense.
        
        On Stuff there is what is described as an analysis of the latest incident which gives what some will see as balance, but I see as a Leftist-Liberal, pacifist view of the latest would-be terrorism case.
        
        Reporter Megan Gattey includes in her article to the views of Katerina Standish, director of the University of Otago’s grandly named “National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies”.
        
        Standish’s answer is community building and peace education.
        
        “If you see someone slipping through the cracks, reach out to them. People who are disconnected and feel alone hurt others or hurt themselves (or both).”
        
        Then the article quotes Dame Devoid and NZ’s Chief Multiculturist, Massey University’s Paul Spoonley, and brings in a mention of the National Front, which I thought was defunct. It’s a far-Right organisation that is or was led by part-Maori, part-white Kyle Chapman.
        
        In my view, this article’s goal is to downplay coverage of what was a planned car and knifing massacre in the newspaper’s own city. However, Gattey and the “Press” might argue that it is to provide balance.
        
        Balance, to what, I’m not sure.

    For those of us who haven’t caught up, Padriv and Paulus are talking about the 15-year-old Muslim in Christchurch before the courts for a planned terror attack.
    
    The court released him on supervision. Judge O’Driscoll said the teen’s rehabilitation would benefit the community in the long run.
    
    The case is being underplayed by the MSM, as you would expect.

      I notice ol’ Hazim lied to NZers again today in his interview on RNZ. At the end of the interview he repeated the lie that Islam means ‘peace’. He knows full well that it doesn’t, never has, and the history of Islam right up to the current day is chock full of death, opression, invasion and enslavement – all in the name of Allah.
      
      Let’s also not forget that only relatively recently the leader of the world’s Shia community publically and personally offered money to any person who would end the life of a British author who merely wrote a book. Sunni’s showered themselves in disgrace too – by killing a number of people associated with the book’s publication and marketing.

    It’s “Islam”. There is no “real Islam” or any other qualifier because the interpretation is personal. When you’re talking with a Muslim about Islam, you’re talking about *his* personal interpretation of Islam. That may differ from the next guy.
    
    It’s not like the Catholic Church, which has a figurehead who directs. That’s why Islam won’t “reform”, at least, not in the way we understand the term reform. “Some followers of Islam may interpret it in a more benign way” is the best that can be expected.

They remain silent of course. So here is the news on the recovery of the Dow Jones Industrial Index (as at 07:42am our time):

• Index up 0.62% on the previous day
• Index up 4.97% over the last 5 trading days
• Index up 1.34% over 2018 year-to-date

Most of our media are interested only in the disastrous, the negative and the ‘personality’ stuff. As a nation we are being sold seriously short by a lack of professionalism in NZ media, including Television New Zealand, Radio New Zealand, The Herald and Stuff.

        The Fed doesn’t need Treasury permission to lend to banks. The Discount Window, really the Discount rate no longer exists it has been replaced with the Primary Credit rate which is 0.75% above the FFR and anyone can access it but they prefer to use the FFR money, which the Fed keeps stocked with ample liquidity anyhow.
        
        Are you saying that Dodd-Frank was an idiotic left-wing piece of legislation that doesn’t protect the system if say a Long Term Capital Management needs rescuing? Leftie Andrew- Ross Sorkin says both Glass-Steagall and Dodd-Frank wouldn’t have stopped the 2007-2008 meltdown. Seems Lizzy Warren is full of sh*t.

      True cmm Wall st and the banks in USA found new ways to feed their greed and then the house of cards collapsed so the dragged the Fed in as a new dealer and player. Rapid printing of a lighter shade of greenback created more problems than is solved with is a classic example of the Fool Factor (unintended consequences).
      Any Crash though it happens like wildfire has been a long time in the making but the recovery takes a lot more pain and work than some silver bullet.

The FED is believed to be actively taking positions in futures and hence controlling the whole view.The BOJ has done that too. Prices and monetary flows were once linked rationally and value was considered. Now earnings are unlinked from price.

  IMHO the biggest potential problem we have is not so much the incoming Muslims themselves, but the potential radicalization of a large number of disaffected Maori youth.
  
  We have a large number of youth who lack a purpose and are easy pickings for the clerics etc.
  
  It is easy for them to create “youth centres” etc which the MSM will portray as wonderful positive impacts of Islam.

        Also, re the possible implication that name suppression shouldn’t have been granted, the judge is best placed to decide what is the best means of rehabilitation. Yes, I know the kid is a risk, and it may rebound, but name suppression may still be a necessary means to effect his rehab.
        
        Plus it makes it harder for jihadists to know who he is/try again in future via the internet. He is, after all, still not yet an adult, even if he was planning a crime that is adult in its scope and implications.
        
        Seems to me a punitive approach would reinforce the “persecution/them-and-us” mentality that attracts and locks the gullible into cults.

I may be swimming against the Kiwiblog tide but better our current policy – we accept migrants and refugees who meet our criteria, including security checks, some of whom happen to be Muslim. But neither religion, nor a lack of one are part of the selection or rejection criteria. Doesn’t mean we have to be naive, and yes, it is a fact that Muslims in the current environment do present a statistically higher terrorism/radicalisation risk.       Sam, undoubtedly most of people who previously would have been in secure psychiatric hospitals have much better quality of life now in suburban homes.
      
      But there are also deranged people sleeping in the streets, and people committing suicide, who would have been better off in the old type hospitals.
      
      I hadn’t heard about cerebal palsy sufferers being confined in hospitals.
      
      The improvement in attitudes to the mentally ill hasn’t all been in the last two decades. The founder of Sunnyside Hospital in Christchurch, for example, well over a century ago, was enlightened by today’s standards.

        Mostly the people who should be locked up are, and I do agree that there is cause to detain some people. Unfortunately the system at present detains them in prison facilities where they don’t belong and are often doubly abused by this fact. The difficulty is that mental health is the poor relation of the health service and is and has been systematically and dangerously underfunded, particularly in the last 9 years.
        
        The old style hospitals had old style treatments and attitudes to go with them. There are better alternatives.

    Yes waikatogirl but the buck was passed to the “community” even when most taxpayers would be prepared to fit the bill for funny farms and prisons.
    The saddest Fool Factor with that mistake was the loss of qualified, trained staff who had amassed so much knowledge and skill in helping so many people. Criminals were the minority of inmates there with the bulk being resident or outpatients who had had a vast range of problems.
    There are not many “sane” people who do not know of casually or directly who was assisted by one or other of those institutions. Now support is fractionated as the Heath services struggle with other organisations to try to establish wraparound service. The patient can easily have to travel to several locations for what was all under one roof. Interestingly support may well include a “free taxi” to get to each location.

        I don’t know if you ever visited or worked in one of our old psychiatric hospitals, but they were worrying places. I don’t think psychiatric /mental health care has ever been much chop in NZ. It’s not just the last 9 years that have been underfunded.
        
        My school friend died in Porirua Hospital aged 14. I visited her once there with her mum, although we spent most of the afternoon out at Paremata Beach. The few minutes I saw of the place was enough to convince me never to go back.
        
        My brother had a friend whose brother had spent most of his life as a patient in Lake Alice hospital.
        He came home for Xmas lunch one year. He seemed perfectly “normal” to me, so when we had dropped him back to L.A., I asked my brother what was “wrong” with him. … Nothing, my brother replied. He told me the chap had had childhood epilepsy and his parents were advised to put him into a mental home. He had spent the next 30+ years there, even though his epilepsy was under control from drugs. Once you were in the system, it was hard to get out.

        Treatment too often was shut them away out of sight.
        
        Perhaps more media attention might have led people to accept the mental health system is underfunded and the poor relation in health spending.
        
        That would have been a good start.

Look a the poorly rehearsed reception she received in Christchurch along side the little fat one local MP and the Mayor of no description.
She remains all talk – when is she going to do something except create committees of sycophants.
He 100 days appears to have only been talk and no action – I suppose that is all we can expect now that she has blown her pregnant honeymoon.
Cannot get better except the one eyed media and the Heather PR team will tell us otherwise. Robertson is no better keeping well out of the glow of Cindy – but of course he has nothing intelligent to offer except that as I screw, so you will all be screwed.

  The thing that staggers me is how our dopey media have accepted this nonsense, “Oh, I’ll have this baby and return to work in x number of weeks.” Utter nonsense, most women can’t be overly active in the last month, what about complications? I actually lost a family member after giving birth. Emergency caesareans? What about a screaming baby wanting to be fed all night?         Actually, it would be perfectly reasonable for someone to make an anonymous call to the appropriate agencies. They do share information with Police, who (I am told by a friend in the force) are aware of someone’s drug use.
        
        Under current protocols, they would have no choice but to act on any expression of concern. (I’m fairly sure that is in line with Labour/Green thinking, so they could hardly complain.)

  I saw a great smack-down on Twitter last night. Some Labour-leaning academic was saying how inspiring it was that Jacinda opened a new Science building at University of Canterbury yesterday, and how it reinforces Labour’s commitment to public education.

Hullkiwi and I commented on this yesterday – we were on the same wavelength but differed in detail. He said “Peter, with due respect, I understand your points, but Fletcher’s problems as you allude to them is a NZ problem. Over reliance on a group of people (Quantity Surveyors) to do a job they are not qualified to do.”

Now the NZSA release has pretty well said that. What is worse however is Fletcher B&I had the capability beyond Quantity Surveyors with managers that added further insight to the Quantity Surveyors’ work to ensure that contracts were potentially profitable and to take into account wider issues such a escalations, labour shortages etc. However the NZSA release indicated that the previous CEO when appointed set about with changes that led to this capability disappearing. New CEO’s want to make changes but unfortunately some of them are just full of it and con appointment panels and directors. NZSA indicated too that the Board was fast asleep and did not keep an eye on or challence the CEO’s actions. No doubt the Audit and Risk Committee was concerned with routine detail and failed to address the major potential risk in the B&I division – the way tenders were costed and prepared.

Apart from adverse comments on the former CEO, NZSA indicated that that CEO had ‘captured’ the Board so it could not function properly ie the CEO treated the Board like mushrooms. This is a Board problem, especially with the Chair – in my view it indicated that the whole Board was incompetent and seriously failed in their duties as directors. Perhaps some Directors tried unsuccessfully to raise issues – if they failed after successive attempts they should have resigned and made their reasons public. Unfortunately the ‘system’ would be likely to ‘penalise’ them as offers of directorshios would dry up.

This is an extremely nasty indictment of Corporate New Zealand and Fletchers is by no means the only case.

  Alas you are right. there are plenty of examples of Board capture by CEO. Think Reynolds the Scotsman ex British Telecom former CEO of Telecom as it was named then. Came in got rid of the senior execs bought in his mates from BT. After $25m in salary etc he departs leaving a shambles.
  
  Adamson at Fletchers was from UK. The problem is NZ Boards think they have to import a CEO so get what I call a “gypsy CEO” who travels the world sweet talking Board comes in for a couple of years causes chaos because doesnt understand local corporate culture company culture pisses off the good staff who leave.
  Has a gold plated contract with huge exist payment no matter what the conditions of exist.
  
  Alas corporate governance in NZ is very mediocre hence financial performance in less than optimum.
  
  We need Directors who understand their business and know the questions to ask the CEO to make sure the company is performing.
  
  What we dont need is ‘Suits”. Accountants Lawyers Bankers who dont understand the business and dont know the questions to ask the CEO and answers they should be getting.

  I suspect they have fallen into the trap of believing that they must get all contracts of a certain size or class. Unlike their bankers, they may have stopped measuring risk in money. A common way for contractors to fail.

    Like the Air NZ/ Ansett debacle in the early 2000’s. Air NZ had part ownership of Ansett but the Aussies did not allow Air NZ to fully exercise ownership rights such as access to corporate information. Then Air NZ and Singapore Airlines both badly wanted to purchase the rest of Ansett and Rupert Murdoch sought bids without allowing due diligence and was laughing all the way to the bank having offloaded a dog onto a bigger fool.
    Seemed that while Air NZ part owned Ansett it made no real attempt to find out as much as possible about Ansett – much could have been found out despite an information block. For example, the average age of the 737 fleet was much higher compared with other airlines, union insistence that 767’s had three pilots instead of the industry standard of two. Air NZ also should have assessed Australian culture especially officialdom and unions more thoroughly – there is significant resistance to foreign interlopers. This is especially as the Australian authorities had previously successfully pulled the plug on proposed Air NZ operations in Australia in breach of trade agreements. Air NZ should have been regularly assessing Ansett in that light so Air NZ would have been aware of the implications if there was a sale opportunity. Instead it was so desperate to get its hands on Ansett to help it enter the Australian market it threw all caution to the wind and purchased a pup doomed to failure.
    That was serious incompetence at Board and top management level. If it were not for a Government bailout (Helen Clark and co were desperate to retain a NZ flag carrier airline) Air NZ would have joined Continental, Pan Am and SPANZ in the history books.

Liquidity was measured by a broad index and value by earnings and total shareholders funds.     I see Simon Bridges as a very intelligent man. I don’t see his Maori heritage has held him back in any shape or form. I don’t see that his European heritage has held him back either. He’s Simon – a product of a union between a Maori father and a Pakeha mother. They should be very proud of him and I’m sure they are. His kids will do well in life.         His father was indeed a Baptist minister, and a very respected one, I understand. He was of Ngāti Maniapoto descent.
        
        I’ve only met Simon Bridges a couple of times and have found him very personable. I’m not sure though that he is the right person to lead National, but good luck to him for putting his name forward.

    Sharp and clever; they have them. But likeable? I don’t see anyone there who is capable of making the populist connections that Ardern has in such a short space of time. But do people want their leaders to be likeable? The charming Macron and handsome Trudeau have lost support alarmingly since election. Key was likeable to many but he was also probably one of the most disliked PM’s since Muldoon. What New Zealanders have always wanted is a safe pair of hands, and even the last election showed that. That’s what I see a lack of; I wouldn’t trust any of the current contenders or senior opposition members with my country. There really is a bad dearth of talent at leadership level in the National Party.

  Cops fixated with “speed” and booze . Cos they have machines to measure that , but none to measure tiredness.
  
  Phones are probably a very low priority but causing a disproportionate amount of carnage.
  
  This weekend just past saw 7 killed on the roads, to the media and politicians that’s a bit ho hum . Had they been shot the same media and pollies would be calling for bans.

    A significant number of fatalities are lone driver with no other vehicle involved. Mainly male. Prime suicide material.
    
    There has also been a huge increase on fatalities where people were not wearing seatbelts. This on its own is enough to explain the increases from 2015 to 2017.

  Statistics. Haven’t they heard of mean and standard deviation? Numbers will fluctuate but that doesn’t mean they have an an increasing trend. Also there is no apparent adjustment for the changing population size. Without that the numbers lose a lot of meaning. They are still deaths but deaths/100,000 adult population is more significant to assessing what is going on. There may be seasonal corrections required for shorter periods.

  The artist included a sperm on his forehead (the veins) and minarets in reflections on his face.

  Joyce would be a terrible choice. First he failed to explain that they replaced the NZ Super Fund with reducing the debt level below 20% (to 10-15% if I recall correctly). But he didn’t explain that and let the public believe they didn’t care. Then he garbled the Labour over promises ($11b ‘hole’) and lost the easy gains there. He’s competent but sadly would butcher any positives with his narrative (or lack thereof). That’s my opinion in any case.

    Joyce was also National’s campaign manager for the General Election, so the failure to win a fourth term is as much his responsibility as it was Bill English’s.       2. You learn something about Islam and the attitudes different rules sects have for clothing.
      
      When you become a teacher in NZ you are expected to deal sensitively with children of different cultures and religions.
      I suspect I know a damn sight more about Islamic practices than you.
      I have cooked Halal meals for my muslim students.
      I have woken boys/men on field trips so that they could perform their early morning prayer.
      I have shown them where East is when we were in the middle of the Orongorongos.
      
      Finally, have a read about this father in Auckland who was unable to watch his 12 year-old daughter at a school netball tournament.

  Have you considered that no less than one in six citizens are likely to suffer from some sort of mental health problem in the course of their lives?
  
  Secondly, do you think that a successfully treated patient should be barred from hunting or sports shooting because of an historic episode?
  
  Thirdly. It is difficult to get people suffering from (eg) depression to seek help. Do you think more or less people would access mental health services if they knew that their favourite sports would be no longer available to them?

    A month ago today I had the local firearms vetting guy at my table going over my renewal application.
    
    I received my new license Tuesday this week.
    
    About a quarter to a third of the lengthy interviews with my referee, myself and next of kin were to do with mental health, behaviours etc and I gained the strong impression that the slightest hint of an issue would render my application void.
    
    I can understand people not being upfront with GPs and not seeking help with depression issues etc because of their risk to their sport.

      The police are thorough in vetting firearm applications, and safe storage.
      
      If the firearms include pistols, the police are even more rigorous. Gun clubs are brought into the supervision and education processes, and each pistol is in effect registered. If pistol owners don’t regularly participate in their club’s sport, they are in line to lose their licences – and their pistols.
      
      Illegal firearms and unlicensed owners are where the problem chiefly lies. If the police move to registration of firearms as well as licensing of owners, illegal firearms and unlicensed owners will be outside the regime.

  Different climates and geographies mould different physiques. West Africa for sprinters, north-east Africa for distance runners, for example.
  
  Obviously cold countries are going to be better, from facilities to physiques and accumulated expertise, for winter sports.

    * The refrigeration requires enormous amounts of electricity. Even in the best Adrican country (South Africa), electricity is oversubscribed and unreliable. hat would make the electricity situation worse and the facilities would not work.
    
    * Within a few months the facility would shut down due to lack of electricity, lack of use, gross mismanagement and embezzlement.
    
    * A few months later the building will be broken into and all the chiller pipes etc ripped out and sold for scrap metal.
