  Just read this. That poor guy. Something similar happened to me a few years back. Sucker punched from behind, two fractures in my eye socket, two fractures in my right sinus. Fortunately I stayed on my feet and was able to deal with my attacker, who had king hit me as I was restraining another drunk dickhead who had just tried to punch me in the head. I was working front of house at the Auckland Greyhound Club at the time.
  
  Later on in the waiting room at the hospital, I was asked by the nurse if anyone had warned me to not sneeze. I asked, half jokingly, “Why, will my eye fly out if I do?” She said “Yeah, probably!”
  
  I didn’t sneeze!
  
  The right side of my face still goes numb every time I have a cold, and I get a sinus infection up there about twice a year.

      Yep, the little shit that started it all as well. His lawyer called me and offered a $5,000 reparation payment as part of a plea deal. I countered with mandatory anger management, community service, and $10,000.

    The article above was the first time in NZ I’d seen the MSM using sucker punch or Coward’s punch in preference to the term King Hit.
    
    Aussie MSM has been labelling these attacks as Coward’s punches for years.

    Where it causes death it is manslaughter already. There is currently a plethora of offences covering assaults of all degrees where death does not ensue. The nature of the attack can be taken into account both in determining the proper charge and as an aggravating feature on sentencing. So why pass yet another law? How do you define a “coward’s punch”? Lawyers will love it, judges will hate it. Waste of time.

        It just seems to me that legislation is overused as a mechanism to bring about social change. To stop people smacking their kids, we needed a law. To promote gender equality we need laws. To promote racial equality we need laws. The thinking is that by passing a law we are signalling that certain conduct is unacceptable. However, if there are laws already in place that cover the conduct, why pass new ones? Tell me how you would legally define a “coward’s punch” for the purposes of criminal legislation, and I will tell you flaws that a competent defence lawyer would exploit to make the law difficult to enforce.
        
        PS I have been “kinghit” twice, both times by young drunk kids whose aim was off, fortunately for me.

        Whilst we are talking about violent thugs.
        Another one that comes to mind is Ben Stokes.
        It now comes apparent that this overpaid spoilt brat will never play cricket again in Australia.
        He is on a charge of affray which can attract three years imprisonment in the UK.
        On this charge, He would fail New Zealand’s immigration character test by a long shot, anything over 12 months is grounds for refusal of visa.
        Of course, Ben Stokes and the ECB can circumnavigate this as he is a dual citizen.
        What he cannot do is change the law in Australia. He can pray Labor changes their stance to thugs.
        The ECB appear to be a pack of fools in this matter.
        If he was the greatest cricketer on earth, there is no excuse for his off ground behaviour.
        People wanting his autograph makes me sick.
        As for the cowards punch, NZ really does own it, just look at the numbers headed back to the long white cloud on a one way ticket.

  We used to call it a “king hit,” but a “coward’s punch” is a more appropriate name.
  
  Victims don’t get a chance to brace before hitting the ground,and many crash their heads on concrete or bitumen or something-else hard.
  
  I know of a strong young Christchurch guy, a security guard, waiting to join the NSW police after being accepted, at a quiet work gathering in a Sydney pub.
  
  He politely asked three annoying rowdies nearby to tone it down.
  
  An hour or more later, as he was walking out of the bar, he was king hit from behind, and died from head injuries suffered when his head hit a floor fixture.
  
  Being Australia, the hitter went to prison, but for nowhere long enough.

  I have been thinking;how long is it since we have seen a piece in granny Herald praising a National Party MP?
  This is the bloke who took on one of NZ’s best known Maori and beat him in the constituency. I wrote on this blog eleven months ago about how hard King had been campaigning; he was all over Northland; I saw him at the Paparoa Show, Waitangi on the 6th then the following month at Mangunu church and the Paihia Dog swimming races. The only time I had seen Winnie was at Ellerslie on Cup Day.

  Jacinda’s pregnancy came up with a group of women I was with on Friday. Once I pointed out how amazing it is Jacinda seems to think she can only take 6 weeks one woman sighed and said “she is one C-section or bout of PND away from realising how hard motherhood actually is”. I am predicting Andrew Little will be Labour leader again by years end, wether he is PM will depend on Winston.

        My late wife hated it – turned into a shaking shivering emotional mess, tears one moment, screaming harridan the next. It was just awful.
        
        And The Blond is the opposite. Will tear up, but then get incredibly cuddly and loving, after a short length of time of quiet sadness.

        I’m in a unique position to comment. I recently completed three years of androgen deprivation chemotherapy for prostate cancer, and the side effects were described to me as being very similar to menopause. Hot flashes, sweating, emotional instability, weight gain, depression, loss of libido, the whole nine yards. Fuzzy brain as well, fatigue, AND insomnia (There’s a combination from hell!).
        
        Ended up that my wife and I went through ‘menopause’ at the same time!
        
        I’m quite prepared to say that she handled it much better than I did!

      The Muslim Rohingyas are being mercilessly persecuted by the mainly Buddhist Burmese after years of ongoing clashes between their security forces and Rohingya militants.
      
      These Muslims (ethnically Indian not Burmese) arrived from what is now Muslim Bangladesh during and after Britain ruled the place and they never made any attempt to integrate. They have their own language and they mostly refuse to learn Burmese and yet they continually agitate for citizenship rights and privileges from Myanmar, a country that insists on language as one of the main requirements for citizenship.
      
      Myanmar has seen what happens when societies are invaded by Muslims and they are acting to defend their country by dealing harshly to their militants and telling them basically to fuck off back to Bangladesh where they originated from. Similar to the ‘Palestinians’ who have been used as a political football by their Arab neighbors for decades, the lovely Bangladeshis don’t want to help their fellow Muslims or let them in and the other Muslim countries like Indonesia and Malaysia won’t help either, preferring to use them as propaganda/media darling/victims instead.
      
      Rohingya terrorist attacks seem to have been largely confined to Rakhine state due to the efficiency of Myanmar’s security forces and this is one of the few examples of the followers of Mohammed not being terribly successful in their jihad.

        Anyone who knows anything about that wretched country will have heard of other ethnic groups who have been persecuted by the military government over the years. Thousands are in refugee camps on the Thai side of the border.
        We once came across one such group living a pitiful existence while driving out in the styx. They can’t work, can’t go to school, can’t get an i.d. card, couldn’t talk Thai, exploited like zoo animals at a nearby show market, can’t go anywhere . . .

I’ve met any number of genetic Slavs in this country who go by English surnames, because that’s the name of their adoptive parents. The failing newspaper today took great store in mentioning the Clinton won the popular vote by 3+ million and this somehow made Trumps win not really legitimate. Jacinda lost the popular vote to Bill but of course its different if the left win. I also notice that the paper has stopped referencing what American left news source they copied their articles from. Too many people are fact checking their copy and pointing out the minor changes they make to sensationalise their articles. i.e. “No, there haven’t been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong.” Their retraction hidden away in another article.

      A few months ago I saw a thing called “You choose history” or something like that.
      
      Real leftie lecturers at real universities giving their theories for what “really happened” as opposed to the official histories and telling the students they could choose which history they prefered.
      
      The one I watched was about the Mfecane: a period when the Zulus inflicted genocide which wiped out 50% of the South African population at the time, also causing a domino-like cascade of displacement that rippled through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Two profs had published the predictable black-washing of history:
      A) It never happened and was all made up by colonialists to justify stealing the land.
      B) The colonialists actually did the killing and spread rumours it was Zulus.
      
      And the students get to decide which of these they like.
      
      If we are supposed to learn from history, then we will never learn anything if we rewrite it all the time.

        Slaving is part of the human condition. Everyone has done it in one form or another. Only the Europeans ever put in any effort to stop it.
        
        The Arabs were very active trading in West Africa all the time. Sure the Europeans did take over the Atlantic sea bound operation for a while, but the Arabians continued overland.
        
        Get a slave. Chop his balls off, then force him to march through the Sahara.
        
        The Arab slave trade was still active in Kenya etc in the early 1900s. The British put huge amounts of military resources into patrolling for slave traders both on land and at sea.
        
        And after the Clinton/Obama tag-team fucked up Libya etc, the first thing that pops up is a new Arabian slave trade.

        Slavery is part of everyone’s history. Europeans, Africans, Maori, etc etc. Everyone has both been slaves and held slaves.
        
        Even freed slaves in America owned slaves.
        
        If you were a black slave you could be:
        * Enslaved by other blacks in Africa.
        * Enslaved by Arabs.
        * Enslaved by blacks or Arabs and then sold to Europeans.
        
        While slavery is morally repugnant, the slaves who ended up in European control likely had the best out of a bad deal.
        
        Strange how the Very Worst People Ever (South African whites) never had African slaves. Had a few Malayan slaves though…

Why do we get so much American news? TVNZ even leads its main news with a US story. Radio NZ has lengthy analyses every morning of gun laws, FBI antics etc etc, none 0f which has any relevance to us. If we are interested there’s plenty of stuff on the internet.

“In my opinion I do not want Trump here at all,” Ameer Hussain, a 15-year-old freshman at the school told The Daily Beast.

Trump is scheduled to be at his resort in Mar-a-Lago this weekend. And reports on Friday said that he would be paying a visit to Parkland, Florida—the site of the shooting that claimed 17 lives on Wednesday while wounding 15 others—to, in his words, “meet with some of the bravest people on earth.”
It’s common for presidents to visit the sites of national tragedies and, while there, meet with the affected. But Trump is neither a conventional president nor one whom many people here particularly want to see.

Just read the Gay Pride piece of yesterday. IMHO given the law reform was 30 years ago for this straight person it seems a little OTT and over acting to have all this excited display.

Immediately after the law reform it was expected that gays would and did celebrate but 30 years on and after them telling us they want to part of society quite rightly maybe just maybe they could tone it do a bit and not stick it in our faces all the time.

  Depends on what is being pushed in people’s faces. A fun entertainment day celebrating gay rights is one thing. I went a few times when I lived in Ponsonby – I’ve always supported equal rights for gays.
  
  But I stopped going after instead of just joyous, glitzy displays there was a float with men in cages, some fake whipping others in barely-there leather outfits and chains. That’s not ‘Gay Pride’, that’s S&M, and there were families with small children who had come to enjoy and support the parade.
  
  But when I complained to a gay friend about this float in front of kids he just said ‘what did they expect at a Gay Pride parade?’. No consideration at all for children, and no separation of equal rights for gay couples from a public sexual and violent display.
  
  I decided I’d done enough: supported equal marriage and property rights, supported gay friends through the coming out process etc etc. No need to ‘admire’ S&M displays.
  
  No idea whether they still allow that crap in the parade.

        Lots of states have strict gun control laws banning semi-automatics and requiring licensing.and they they could improve gun laws regardless of Trump, if they have the political will at state level. I don’t have a problem with stricter gun control. But it is not going to be as easy for the Americans to implement, just as it’s not easy to control the flow of drugs. Further, they do not have the advantage of a boundary of water. Ultimately they are a sovereign nation. We should look at our own problems. What happened to the emergency that was NZ poverty, family violence, homelessness , housing the environment and suicide rates that our government campaigned on. Any improvement?

        No state in the US has laws banning semi-automatics and neither does NZ. People hunt deer and pigs with them here, though bolt action is more common.
        
        NZ law would not have prevented the Parkland shooting. You can buy the same gun from your local gun shop though the process takes a bit longer.

        Here’s a Wikipedia page in these matters. I don’t know how up to date it is – but you’ll get the general drift.
        
        If an AR15 has none of the ‘features’ of an MSSA it is A Cat – and you can grab yourself one if you have a license.
        
        While I’ve shot a few, I haven’t hunted with or owned semi-autos myself – I just don’t like them. I believe they’re used in NZ for helicopter pest control for example – where fast follow up shots are required and you of course don’t need to ‘demount’ the rifle from the firing position to eject your spent cartridge case, pick up a new round and cock the weapon as you need to do with a bolt-action.

But I’m a NZer and I’m concerned about the erosion of democracy by the COL. I went to a delightful birthday at a pleasing suburban club yesterday. The place has a lovely backdrop, and as I have been involved in the administration of a club I searched the outfit online. They were up to date with their filing requirements, but what was there was a mish mash of mumbo jumbo.
No auditor’s report or reviewer’s report. No idea of what the Club’s turnover was. No statement of accounting policies so I don’t know whether the accounts were inclusive or exclusive of GST. No mention of the Club’s property’s government valuation, which must be about $2,000,000. In short, mumbo jumbo.
Then I thought; the highly paid people at the Registrar of Incorporated Societies take the internet download of the accounts and put them up on their site and nobody who has studied sixth form bookkeeping looks at them.
You can pass all the laws you like, but if nobody is going to enforce them, then that is a joke.

  There are no particular reporting standards for Incorporated Societies, only what is in the individual societies rules. That is however changing to bring in the same reporting requirements as charities within the next few years (currently being consulted on). Incorporated Societies don’t concern me too much as it is members money used for members, no real tax benefits etc. Will be good to see it tightened up a little though given how easy it is to prepare proper financial statements with Xero etc these days.

    The reporting requirements have become impossible. The need to be hold a current certificate as a Chartered Accountant or whatever they now are is making it far too expensive. The cost of maintaining membership for what is relatively trivial bookkeeping review is ludicrous. That cuts me out of doing small audit reports even gratis.
    The FMA went over the top in establishing their patch legislatively. There were many retired accountants who did the community work like Plunket Audits or Organist Society or a body corporate for a group of flat owners. These have been scrapped. Perhaps the new government can address that problem. It is not formal public company reporting at stake.

      Audits are only required over $1m turnover for a charity (review over $500k), that isn’t exactly a small organisation and is a fairly hefty subsidy from the taxpayer potentially. We recommend amending your constitution if below that level but have a specific requirement.
      Requiring the auditor to be a chartered accountant sets legal minimum standards that can be enforced and was needed based on some of the people calling themselves an auditor who weren’t up to the job. There is no such thing as a partial audit.

  The only real differences I can see are:
  * Interbreeding: Most – if not all – Maori have some European ancestors. That makes it harder to make Maori vs Pakeha into a credible racial issue.
  * Population: If NZ was 90% Maori things would be very different.

      * Europeans have lived in South Africa since the 1600s – almost as long as Europeans in North America.

      The original people of Southern Africa (Koi San) were in South Africa approx 120,000 years ago and were slowly displaced by Bantu people. They sparsely inhabited the Cape when the Dutch first settled there.
      
      As for Bantu people in South Africa. They only lived in the North and the East – and not in the Cape area. They lived in these areas, because they are the most fertile with the best rainfall etc. and their crops and cattle flourished there. They pushed the Koi San out and took over.
      
      Indeed, the Bantu people still have not fully colonised the area and Cape Town is the only city in Africa that does not have a black majority. It is predominantly Cape Coloured.
      
      While there are still some Koi San in Namibia and the Kalahari areas, they have mostly been absorbed into the mixed-race melting pot known as “Cape Coloureds”.
      
      Cape Coloureds thus have the most claim to being the original people of Southern Africa (and South Africa in particular) and they, generally, get on pretty well with the Europeans.

FWIW I think one of the biggest virtue signalling organisations at the moment is the NZ Rugby Union.
We have had a constant stream of luvvie shit including a “respect and responsibility review” and the specific appointment of a women to handle complaints around inappropriate behaviour because of course a man could ever be trusted with this job in a progressive society.
Their website reads like a government department full of circle jerk stuff such as
“We’re a diverse group of people with a positive mix of different backgrounds, experience, gender and ethnicity”.
Then to top off everything they entered a float in the Pride Parade on the weekend just to show how inclusive and tolerant they are of everyone.
Maybe the All Blacks should wear make up and a skirt in their next game or little gay pride badges on their uniforms just to reinforce the PR tsunami.

This is a major concern. NZ birthrate is 1.81. Replacement is 2.10. NZ has to either increase its birthrate or depend on immigration just to maintain its population. A combination of both is an option but I believe the focus should be on increasing the birthrate. This would require financial incentives. That may not please some ideologues but can NZ get quality immigrants with the right skills and from a similar culture.

  Education, Health, is where it is at.
  Per capita GDP is what needs to be increased.
  
  Not more cars, houses, more infra structure, like motorways and roads.
  Currently infrastructure up grades are needed, and that is billions of dollars, that Auckland needs, just to stand still for its sewerage pollution, that is set to take decades to complete.
  Roads are another issue, as a wall of wood wall to be harvested.
  Rail could be up graded, but only if truly accountable. Nor does it travel every where.
  
  When people are ready, then it is easy if they so wish, when they feel more financially secure, with increased GDP (leading to increased wages) to pop out another couple of more children, and to be bought up well !
  
  More houses seems more like a dog chasing its tail, when more people must come in to build, gain citizenship and live.
  In part it is important that houses are up graded, glazing, insulation, and just to allow for the ageing of old houses, being beyond their use by date.
  
  Governments are supposed to be
  by the people
  of the people
  for the people of this country.
  Not by some elitist ideas.
  Look after our own, there are more than enough problems to solve together, with out further complications.

      The present surge in old folk is because of the ageing of the baby-boom bulge from families created soldiers returning from World War 2.
      
      As the baby boomers die off, the increase in NZ’s average age will at least hold, but more likely will fall. Health care does increase longevity, but new threats can always break out to play hell with populations. From the Black Death of olden times, to the Spanish Influenza flu that killed tens of millions, new diseases keep rising. For example, and it’s not worth panicking about, in the last week or two, bird flu has crossed to a human for the first time.
      
      Birthrates change. The fascists in Italy, the Communists in Rumania, and the Nazis in Germany were able to quickly send the birth rate soaring.

  a) End of the housing crisis

  e) Fewer people living under Cindy’s fake poverty measure

  If you want to increase the population it’s easy. Do it by incentivising breeding by net tax contributors. If your total tax contribution per annum is over a certain threshold then you get a tax holiday if you have kids. 3 months tax holiday for one kid, 5 months for two, 6 for three rug rats.
  
  That way there is no incentive for deadbeats on the dole to breed and a huge incentive for the productive. It increases the likelihood of breeding in productive characteristics instead of the reverse incentives we have in place now.

What I never realized until reading her book is that for sex the man must tear through the scar tissue sealing the opening, and not only is this of course agony for the girl (it took her weeks to recover), it’s really hard work for him (often an extended process, even requiring a knife). Images Ccan’t be much fun for men either. Maybe the frustration helps explain all the wife beating and other “Muslim rage.”

        Your link about the Indonesia shows an up grade in hygiene. That does not cover the islamic stench behind fgm. So it is a lot of bark, and no bite, by the government as islam’s ulema retains its hold.

  Agree Maggie, I am also concerned. But in the article they think the answer is not to stream! The maths teaching in primary school is almost non-existent. They teach to learning gaps I was told last term. So if your kid is ahead they might not sit with the teacher in a same ability group for weeks. Meanwhile plenty of time for assemblys and environment studies and art. Streaming is good. I have kids who are above and behind and it’s not fun being in a group that is way too hard or way too easy. Every kid should work in a small group with the teacher on maths at least every other day. I would make it a kpi.

    I can’t wait for NZ to go the route that Britain is adopting…. copying the Chinese model of having specialist Primary Maths teachers to deliver the primary maths curriculum.
    
    There are too many primary teachers in NZ who just cannot teach maths.
    As a secondary school science/physics teacher, I saw too many lads arriving ar secondary school ill-equipped to cope with secondary school maths.
    
    As a mother, I had one daughter who received a pretty good primary school maths grounding.. and one that received fair to average (for NZ) maths teaching at primary school. I’d never have put either of them up against a kid who had had primary maths education in Russia, Finland, Singapore, Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan or even at a Kenyan refugee camp.

        This is really the first time I have seen ERO and Maths educators admitting that it is our primary teachers that are not up to it with regard to teaching primary-level maths.
        
        Primary school teachers had to be proficient up to level 4 of the New Zealand curriculum, which meant understanding and teaching fractions, percentages and decimals.
        
        “A lot of primary teachers would not say they were happy about teaching maths,” Franckom said.
        
        “Teachers have problems with certain aspects of maths teaching because of the way they were taught through their own schooling. It kind of comes back to bite them.”

I am teaching my grandson the time tables. He gets a small reward for each one he achieves. He loves it and is proud when he achieves one of the tables. We are up to the 5 times now. I have to do it because the teachers bloody don’t. I am giving him precious life skills that the useless teaching profession isn’t.

Labour’s new heights are the best result the party’s had in 15 years of Colmar Brunton polling.

    In the main Kiwi swinging voters are fair-minded but non political, hence minor parties loose support between election campaigns as they lack the oxygen of publicity. So governments only forfeit support when they are clearly incompetent in some way. As, contrary to we political tragics who inhabit Kiwiblog, the new Labour/Ardern-led government did not have the chance to do much that was clearly incompetent over the Xmas/New Year “silly season” and the kick off of the political year at Waitangi, they have been rewarded. Is the benefit of incumbency and the oxygen Ardern’s media-friendly personality and pregnancy is gaining.
    
    A good reminder to National as they choose their new leader – Peters and NZ First are more likely than not to miss out in 2020, so the competence of Ardern and her entire coalition government are the real target.

  I can’t understand the fixation the Left & their unwashed hangers-on have for Yank politics, especially those concerned with Trump. Mainly because:
  
  1) In general Kiwis don’t vote in USA elections. Ergo, it’s none of our business & even if it was our opinions change less than nothing.
  
  2) It’s sufficiently boring as to send the average reader into a welcomed coma. Reading the rehashed crap would bore the most devoted of political tragics shitless.

      Some here have even got the basics of MMP but every time an election rolls around we have experts splitting their vote & voting for idiots to give their natural party a backbone.
      
      My point,essentially, is that the arcane Yank political system should only be of academic interest to NZ. The practise of American politics is about as relevant to us as the mating habits of wildebeest.

Okay, I know talking about the weather is deadly boring, but a chat with a bloke who has lived all of his 62 years in our town.
27 degrees and drizzling rain! Unheard of.
I think my lawn grew nearly 2 centimetres last night. The grass is jumping out of the ground. Because there is such incredible, especially for February, grass growth the humid conditions have not caused any excema problems with the dairy cattle. Cockies baling silage in February; not seen since 1965 says a real old codger.
The golf courses, which usually look a barren brown at this time of the year, are a beautiful verdant green, and with the biggest supply of mushrooms ever seen.
